An Introduction to Ohmart/VEGA

For over 50 years, Ohmart/VEGA has provided industry-leading products for the measurement of level, density, weight, and pressure. Our mission has been, and will continue to be, “to deliver innovative measurement solutions worldwide.”

As a global company supplying process and OEM industries worldwide, Ohmart/VEGA strives to provide value in our products and our services to all industry segments we serve.

The inventor of the first nuclear-based measurement system, and the first to introduce two-wire loop-powered radar, Ohmart/VEGA has a strong tradition of product development and improvement. Innovations including FiberFlex, the world’s first flexible nuclear detector, plics®, a complete concept in instrumentation, and ProTrac®, a revolutionary change to nuclear gauging, continue this tradition. Our full product line of level, density, weight, and pressure measurement solutions allows us to provide one of the most complete ranges of measurement solutions in industry. We are proud to apply our products and solutions to serve a wide variety of industries including energy, petrochemical, chemical, oil and gas, pulp and paper, pharmaceutical, mining, plastics, food and beverage,

History

From its inception in 1950, the Ohmart/VEGA Corporation has led the way in innovative measurement solutions. Founded by Philip Ohmart, the company was based on Mr. Ohmart’s invention of a radiation-based system to measure level or density. This product was called the “Ohmart Cell” and was the pioneer of ion-chambers to be used in process control.

In 1959, the modern company known as VEGA was founded in Germany. Originally started as a handicraft business, the company soon began producing machined parts. VEGA eventually moved to producing capacitance probes in their first entry into the process control market.

The direction of these two companies forever changed in 1996. Ohmart introduced the industry’s first HART® -compatible nuclear gauge, beginning the movement towards “modernizing” process measurement equipment. The very next year, VEGA introduced the world’s first two-wire radar gauge, providing a cost-effective way to make use of radar technology. Within 2 years, VEGA was the world leader in radar technology for process measurement. As part of this tremendous success, Ohmart began manufacturing the products in North America under license from VEGA. Shortly thereafter, the official company name was changed to Ohmart/VEGA to reflect the partnership and commitment of Ohmart and VEGA.

Since that time, Ohmart/VEGA continues to lead the way in developing new and exciting technologies for the process industries. In 2000, the world was introduced to the FiberFlex®. A patented device, the FiberFlex® was the world’s first flexible nuclear level detector. Removing many of the disadvantages of older technologies, the FiberFlex® provided a lightweight, flexible detector that saved the customer money, and allowed for mounting on curved or oddly-shaped vessels.

In 2003, Ohmart/VEGA took another giant step forward with the introduction of plics®. This platform for all VEGA-designed instruments makes the products smaller, more advanced, and easier to use. It creates similarities between different product lines, and simplifies selection, use, and programming of all VEGA instruments.

The future offers many opportunities for Ohmart/VEGA to continue to find new and innovative ways to provide measurement solutions to the world’s process industries.

Did you ever wonder how beer is made? How oil is refined into gasoline? Have you ever thought about how plastic pellets are used to make products like bottles, and how paint is manufactured to make your car a shiny red?

Big tanks, small tanks, liquid tanks, solids tanks, Ohmart/VEGA measures them all! With a wide variety of products and solutions, Ohmart/VEGA is able to measure processes of all sizes, shapes, and conditions.

Specialty applications include the measurement of level in delayed coking systems using nuclear level detectors, and the measurement of JP5 jet fuel on all United States aircraft carriers using patented radar gauges. In addition,

Ohmart/VEGA offers two-wire, non-contact radar measurement for solids level, and a full catalog of guided microwave products for measurement of solids or liquids.

Products

Ohmart/VEGA offers a wide variety of products and measurement technologies. Many solutions are standard, but can be individually customized to meet customer or industry needs. Ohmart/VEGA products range from the simplest of point level switches to the most complicated radiation-based level detectors. Whatever the application, an Ohmart/VEGA product or technology will work for you!

RadarRadar technology is used for continuous, non-contact level measurement of liquids or solids. Operating on microwave pulse technology, Ohmart/VEGA systems offer a choice between C-Band and K-Band frequencies. Available with cone, rod, and sanitary antenna systems.

Guided Microwave Radar Guided microwave radar (TDR) technology is used for continuous level measurement of liquids, solids, or liquid interface. Available with rod, cable, and coaxial antenna systems.

UltrasonicUltrasonic technology provides continuous non-contact level measurement for liquids or solids. Using an ultrasonic pulse, the gauges are available in different frequencies and measure short to long range applications.

CapacitanceCapacitance probes are designed for continuous or point level measurement of liquids or solids. Versionsare available for conductive, non-conductive, and adhesive products.

Integration SolutionsThe perfect complement to measurement products, these devices provide display alarming, inventory management, and programming, with input/output options to meet the needs of on-site and remote level inventory management and alarming systems.

Process PressureOhmart/VEGA offers systems to measure process pressure and hydrostatic level. With the unique CERTEC ceramic cell, application conditions such as high vibration and corrosive materials are easily measured in pipeline, tank, and deep well applications.

Vibrating Point LevelOhmart/VEGA offers point level measurement for liquids or solids using vibration-based technology. Available in tuning fork style for liquids, and solid rod or fork style for solids, these sensors detect the presence or absence of the measured material.

Nuclear InterfaceThe Ohmart/VEGA SmartScan provides density profiling of a tank or vessel. The unique design of this device allows the user to select one of six modes to locate or track product layers and interfaces throughout the entire vessel.

Nuclear Level Radiation-based continuous and point level measurement uses a radiation source and detector to pass low amounts of radiation through the vessel. Externally mounted, the systems include rigid scintillators and the FiberFlex® flexible scintillation detector.

Nuclear Density Radiation-based density systems provide measurement of density inside a pipeline. The gauges accurately track specific gravity or percent solids within a pipeline without intrusion into the pipe.

Nuclear WeightOhmart/VEGA radiation-based weigh scales use a source and scintillation detector to measure the amount of product passing through on a screw, chain, or belt conveyor. Coupled with a tachometer, these units provide mass/time without ever touching the product.

Vize MLIs and BridlesMagnetic level indicators and bridles are a complement to the process flow. MLIs are a visual indication of the process level, while bridles allow measurement in pipes.

On-Site ServiceStaff technicians are available 24 hours a day, and are available for on-site visits should the need arise.

Instrument Repair And EvaluationThe facility in Cincinnati maintains a staff of trained repair technicians to evaluate and repair instruments as needed.

ReSource® ProgramOhmart/VEGA’s ReSource Program offers source holder disposal services for all Ohmart/VEGA source holders. In addition, Ohmart/VEGA offers disposal services for most other manufacturers’ source holders.

Customer TrainingCustomer training on any Ohmart/VEGA technology is available on-site, or in Ohmart/VEGA’s Cincinnati-based training facility.

Radiation Safety TrainingA United States Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRC) approved training course. This 5-day course will certify or recertify Radiation Safety Officers to comply with NRC Regulations.

Radiation Program ManagementOhmart/VEGA offers programs to assist the user in setting up and managing radiation safety requirements.

Radiation License Assistance And ConsultingOhmart/VEGA staff is available to assist with questions regarding proper license keeping, and the process of complying with North American and overseas regulations.

Special Capabilities

Over the course of Ohmart/VEGA’s history, unique applications have arisen that have allowed Ohmart/VEGA to expand its business, and to rise to a challenge with no prior visible solution. These “special” applications all began with a customer requesting help to find a better way. For each, Ohmart/VEGA has invested time, money, and commitment to help develop a solution. These applications and solutions help define Ohmart/VEGA’s mission, and illustrate the lengths to which we will go to provide solutions to our customer’s needs.

Ohmart/VEGA committed over 2 years of development to meet the specification of the United States Navy for measurement of jet fuel on aircraft carriers. As a result, there are over 2,500 Ohmart/VEGA radar systems in use on Navy carriers and other ships.

Another example would be the development of a revolutionary way to measure delayed coke drums using a continuous level system. Responding to the needs of a customer, Ohmart/VEGA developed a method to measure level in the drums using a gamma radation-based system. Using multiple lightweight detectors mounted to the existing drum structure, this system provides accurate control of the top foam layer in the vessel. This allows the operators to use the drum to its maximum efficiency.
