MODERN ARCHITECTURE IN MEXICO CITY shares many similarities with Modernist buildings in Southern California: floor-to-ceiling windows; a sense of openness to air, sunlight, and landscape; and perhaps a sense of optimism and the hope of creating a new world. Yet there is something different about Mexico City Modern. As opposed to the nonpolitical character of much of Southern California design and its concern with private life, Mexico City Modern is a public, nationalist art with an energetic, sometimes revolutionary character.

For participants on a Modernism Week tour of Mexico City Modern architecture scheduled for April 2017, the National Autonomous University of Mexico is a much-anticipated stop. Designed from

1949 to 1954 by more than 80 Mexican architects and artists as a collaborative effort, the university is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, designated as such for the ensemble of numerous murals, monumental mosaics, and Modernist buildings found on campus. Several buildings and installations — most notably the central library tower’s mosaics, designed in 1952 by Juan O’Gorman, covering 43,000 square feet on all four façades and created with millions of pieces of naturally vibrantly colored stones collected by the artist from all over Mexico — are superb examples of the integration of Mexico’s pre-Hispanic past and Latin American Modernism.

“The visual forging of the past and present was a visual solidification and advocacy, through the power of architecture, of a new, unified, and independent Mexico emerging into modernity from multiple heritages,” says Anne Rowe, Sunnylands director of collections and exhibitions. “No longer Colonial, no longer indigenous, this uniquely Mexican, nationalist approach reinterpreted the placeless nature of Modernism.”

As an architect and muralist, Juan O’Gorman (1905–1982) represents both sides of Mexico City Modern: the sophisticated modernity and the passionately Mexican imagery of decorative surfaces. In 1931, he designed a combination house and studio, one each for painters Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo, connected only by a roof-level walkway, plus a home for himself nearby. Designed in a then daring avant-garde style of cubic volumes free of all ornament, these buildings were among the first in Latin America to show the influence of Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier.

O’Gorman “started out as a purist,” says Mark Davis, Modernism Week Treasurer who helped organize the day-long symposium on Mexico City Modern. Later in life, O’Gorman grew disenchanted with how his “functionalist” design style had simply become an inexpensive building method, poorly executed by profit-driven developers who lacked his commitment to quality. He began instead to concentrate on creating murals and mosaics with intense, teeming imagery inspired by Mayan and Aztec designs, among others.

Even architects who do not make explicit use of Mexican imagery, such as Luis Barragán (1902–1988), have a distinctively national flavor, according to Davis. With their thick walls, deeply cut windows, and vibrant use of intense color, Barragán’s homes are strongly Mexican, he says. These seemingly simple, yet sophisticated designs convey a mood of silence and contemplation. “Some reference Barragán’s work as ‘emotional’ architecture,” Davis adds, and Barragán’s own words best support this thought: “My house is my refuge, an emotional piece of architecture, not a cold place of convenience.” Well said!

Arguably the most important project undertaken by Barragán was the Gardens of El Pedregal, an elite residential development

of custom, minimalist homes on the then rural southern limits of Mexico City that the architect envisioned as a model of co-existence of architecture and its natural context: in this case, over 865 acres of a 5,000-year-old lava field with a rugged profile. Barragán oversaw its conception, design, construction, and marketing between 1945 and 1953 and, with fellow Mexican Modernist architect Max Cetto, designed the first two “demonstration homes,” setting the architectural look for later construction. Barragán incorporated extensive gardens near the main entry of the community while creating walking paths in between lava ridges throughout the landscape. The subdivision was “dotted with plazas, fountains, ponds, cacti, and pepper trees,” writes Keith L. Eggener in his recent Luis Barragán’s Gardens of El Pedregal (Princeton University Press).

Barragán considered the Gardens of El Pedregal, which by the late 1950s boasted hundreds of minimalist homes by Mexico’s most important Modernist architects, “his most important project, and critics have described the houses and gardens there as a turning point in Mexican architecture,” according to Eggener. Sadly, subsequent commercial development and the division of the once expansive residential lots have destroyed parts of the project.

Another watershed moment in Mexico City Modern was the ambitious sequence of design projects undertaken for the 1968 Summer Olympics. As the first Latin American city to host the games, Mexico City officials were acutely aware of the sudden international visibility of their city, and the games’ design projects served to communicate the image of Mexico City as a modern metropolis while raising international awareness of the expressive possibilities of Mexican design. The 1968 Mexico City Olympics were considered a paradigm-shifting event in the history of graphics, branding, and architecture.

The Annenberg Retreat at Sunnylands in Rancho Mirage displays homage to Mexican culture and design. The Sunnylands column, which is the centerpiece of the fountain in front of the Mayan-inspired house designed by architect A. Quincy Jones (1913–1979), is the work of two well-known artist brothers, Tomás (1914–2001) and José Chávez Morado (1909–2002). The brothers were active in public art, murals, painting, mosaics, and sculpture from the 1930s until their deaths.

One of their most renowned collaborations was the monumental 40-foot-tall hammered bronze columnar-shaped fountain, designed in 1964 for the courtyard of the Museo Nacional de Antropología in Mexico City, at the request of the museum’s architect Pedro Ramírez Vázquez (1919–2013), who often commissioned Mexican artists to create works for his projects.

When the Annenbergs traveled to Mexico City in 1967 and visited the museum, they were so captivated by the fountain that they commissioned the artists to create a near half-scale replica for Sunnylands. The message of the column is conveyed by a series of relief sculptures spread across its surfaces. Featuring an eagle, a jaguar, and the profiles of both an indigenous Mexican and a Spaniard, the images on the column comprise an elaborate symbolic narrative of the country’s cultural history. The narrative sequence concludes with a diagram of an atom, representing scientific progress, and a dove for world peace.

For Rowe, the research on the history of the Sunnylands column developed into what is possibly the first major exhibition of the Chávez Morado brothers outside of Mexico. The exhibition will be part of the prestigious Getty-led initiative “Pacific Standard Time: LA/LA: A Celebration Beyond Borders,” consisting of numerous exhibitions exploring Latin American and Latino art in dialogue with Los Angeles, at over 70 museums, organizations, and institutions in Southern California from September 2017 through January 2018. n

John Lautner: Jazz Architect

IN MUSIC, THEORY AND COMPOSITION comprise the backbone, or structure, of the melody. But it is the musician who brings artistry to what’s on the paper. This is especially true when it comes to jazz. There’s an overarching melody, but the heart of jazz is all about improvisation — a spur-of-the-moment reaction in response to a specific situation. Architect John Lautner’s designs were pure jazz. Fusing nature with engineering and architecture, his work was complex, yet simple — and he never used the same riff twice.

His designs often looked futuristic, but it wasn’t due to a passion for science fiction or a nod to the space race, it was simply out of practicality. Concrete and steel beams afforded the luxury of no interior support beams, integrating nature’s design into Lautner’s great indoors.

Lautner, the son of two art and architecture devotees, was born in 1911 in Marquette, Michigan. At 12, Lautner and his father, John Sr., with the help of the rest of the family, hand-built the Lautner’s self-designed summer home. Perched on top of a mass of towering boulders with breathtaking views of Lake Superior and the Huron Mountains, Midgaard, as the home was called, took three years to complete.

In college, Lautner developed a love for jazz and dabbled in philosophy, ethics, physics, drafting, woodwinds, and piano. In 1933, he earned a degree in liberal arts and was accepted into the Frank Lloyd Wright Fellowship along with his fiancé, Mary “Marybud” Roberts. Lautner wrote: “[Wright] did create a real apprentice training for architects, which is not just drafting, it’s building. On Sunday nights we had 30–40 guests from Chicago, string quartets, and apprentices would be in charge of the whole dinner. We cooked and served and cleaned up for 50 people. So when I design a kitchen, I know what goes on [in it].”

In 1938, Wright sent Lautner to Los Angeles to oversee the construction of the Sturges residence, and Lautner decided to call the city home. He designed and built a house for his rapidly growing family, which was featured in California Arts & Architecture. Architectural historian Henry-Russell Hitchcock proclaimed in Home Beautiful, “It’s the best house in the United States by an architect under 30.”

In 1945, he began working with architect Douglas Honnold, and within that year the two are credited with Embassy Liquor Store, the Darrow Office Building, the Beverly Hills Athletic Club, and a chain of four cafés called Coffee Dan’s.

“The city was being reshaped for the auto,” says architect, historian, and author Alan Hess, “and a lot of architects were designing for cars. The buildings were modern and reflected the modern life. Not just the space age, but new materials — steel skeletal systems, buildings that were lighter and more open. It was all about the space race, the development of suburbia, concrete, new plastics, and glass — it was a new age. Lautner responded to that atmosphere.”

His designs were a perfect fusion of nature

with engineering and architecture.

.Around 1949, Lautner designed Googie’s, a coffee shop in the car architecture style. Similar to populuxe and doo-wop architecture, it had the popular futuristic Jetsons look. House and Home editor Douglas Haskell drove past it one day, turned to his passenger, photographer Julius Shulman, and derisively declared, “This is Googie architecture.” Haskell repeated that sentiment in his magazine, and — much to the architect’s chagrin — Lautner’s name became synonymous with Googie.

“Critics did not understand him,” Hess says. “Most were from the East Coast with a different perspective on architecture. [They] didn’t understand L.A. and what Lautner was doing. He approached every new project with a completely fresh slate. He’d figure out the structure, the space, the people — he worked with brilliant structural engineers — and fit it all together in a brilliant structural design. Today, we are used to Gehry, forms and shapes like the Disney Concert Hall [in Los Angeles], but they have computers to do it, which is so much easier. Lautner never used a computer. He conceived them in his head, and with his staff they were able to execute them. I cannot emphasize enough how difficult it is to do.”

A great example of Lautner’s gift for improvisation is the Malin House (1960, L.A.). The land was on a crag on a 45-degree

slope. Lautner built the entire house off the ground with a 29-foot concrete pillar resting on a massive concrete pad 20 feet in diameter and 3-feet thick. Eight angled steel supports stabilize the outer rim of the octagonal house, with the center pillar housing cables and pipes. Known as The Chemosphere, it has been memorialized in the Brian De Palma film Body Double as well as on The Simpsons.

The Elrod House (1969, Palm Springs) is another great example of Lautner’s skill. Grading of the site revealed huge rocks embedded in the ground. Lautner riffed on that by digging 10 feet deeper, revealing massive boulders, which he then incorporated into the living room. The UFO-like concrete canopy over the circular glass walls opens onto a sparkling pool and is backdropped by a stunning view of Palm Springs and the San Jacinto Peak, perfect for the villain in the James Bond film Diamonds Are Forever.

Lautner designed a few other homes in Palm Springs and beyond. A four-room motel he designed, originally known as The Desert Hot Springs Motel (1947), was recently renovated and newly minted “The Lautner.” Lautner’s Pearlman Cabin in Idyllwild is listed on the National Registry of Historic Places. Arguably his most recognizable structure in the Coachella Valley is the Bob Hope House (1980) on Southridge. When Hope saw Lautner’s model, with its double-bonnet lid and spaceship-like appearance, the actor reportedly quipped, “Well, at least the Martians will know where to land.”

Many of Lautner’s L.A. homes have been featured in films: the Jacobsen House (1947) in 1998’s Twilight, the Shaeffer residence (1949) in A Single Man, Kenneth Reiner’s magnificent Silvertop (1963) in Less Than Zero, the Sheats Goldstein residence (1963) in The Big Lebowski and Charlie’s Angels: Full Throttle, and jazz composer Russ Garcia’s Rainbow House (1962) had a pretty big turn in Lethal Weapon 2.

While never receiving the financial success or the recognition he desired, Lautner had a fairly constant stream of wealthy clients who desired remarkable, innovative homes, including more recent homeowners Gwyneth Paltrow, Courteney Cox, and Vincent Gallo.

When asked what her father might think of being honored on The Palm Springs Walk of Stars, Judith Lautner, President and Treasurer of the John Lautner Foundation, replied, “I think he would think it long overdue. He never felt he was appreciated or known as well as he deserved. I happen to feel the same way, that he wasn’t and still isn’t — although I’m delighted to see his fame spread.” n

On Feb. 17th, 2017, you can join Alan Hess from 10–11 a.m. for his talk “The Visionary John Lautner” ($12), and from 2–3 p.m. Lautner’s star dedication ceremony will take place on Palm Canyon Drive in front of the Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion. The outdoor event has limited seating and light refreshments will be served immediately following. Admission and all that jazz is free.

n Modernism Week is much more than its signature annual February event, an 11-day celebration of midcentury modern design, architecture, art, and culture in Greater Palm Springs. In addition to promoting Palm Springs and its rich midcentury modern architectural heritage, Modernism Week is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization and functions as a platform that enables local neighborhoods, businesses, and other nonprofits to benefit from the tours and events they create for Modernism Week by receiving ticket sales proceeds. Dozens of organizations and neighborhood groups are able to then reinvest back into the local community through the form of neighborhood improvements and charitable projects, thus bettering the quality of life for Palm Springs residents and visitors. More than $1 million of the overall Modernism Week proceeds generated by ticket sales from 2016 events went directly back to community neighborhoods and partner organizations, a new record for Modernism Week. This was an estimated 15 percent increase to the amount generated for these organizations in 2015.

Modernism Week works closely with local neighborhood organizations to showcase tours of iconic Palm Springs residences. These tours raise significant funds for each of the neighborhood groups. In 2016, revenue generated for neighborhood organizations enabled the Palm Springs neighborhoods to invest in various community improvement projects, such as restoration, landscaping, signage, and more. In total, $77,000 was donated by the neighborhoods to local nonprofit and civic organizations as a result of ticket sales proceeds, including Palm Springs Animal Shelter, Neuro Vitality Center, Palm Springs Fire Department, AIDS Assistance Program, Digicom, the Palm Springs Police Department’s K-9 fund, Palm Springs Unified School District Foundation Scholarship Program, Well in the Desert, Meals on Wheels, FIND Food Bank, the Build a Bike program, Vista Del Monte Elementary School, Safe Schools Desert Cities, Sanctuary Palm Springs, Palm Springs Presbyterian Church, Cahuilla Elementary

School, Tahquitz Creek Yacht Club, Alzheimer’s Association (Palm Springs Chapter), and the City of Palm Springs Fire Department Training Facility.

Along with its neighborhood support, Modernism Week also awards grants to local and state preservation organizations for their efforts to preserve and promote Modernist architecture throughout the community and the state of

California. Beneficiaries of ticket proceeds in 2016 received funds in excess of $800,000. These organizations included Palm Springs Art Museum Architecture and Design Center, Edwards Harris Pavilion; Palm Springs Preservation Foundation; Palm Springs Modern Committee; Palm Springs Historical Society; The Aluminaire House Foundation; Mizell Senior Center; as well as national and state entities, including Docomomo US and the California Preservation Foundation.

“Giving back to the community is one of the most important aspects of Modernism Week,” says J. Chris Mobley, Chairman of the Board of Modernism Week. “Our Board of Directors is committed to partnering with community organizations, and we are especially thrilled to award scholarships to deserving local students. These are just a few of the many ways that Modernism Week patrons contribute to the local community by purchasing tickets to the events — and we are truly grateful for their continued participation.”

Modernism Week provides annual renewable four-year scholarships to local Coachella Valley students who have chosen educational paths in the fields of architecture and design. In 2016, two scholarships totaling $10,000 were awarded to deserving students and included matching funds from Coachella Valley Economic Partnership’s program, Pathways to Success. Since the Modernism Week renewable four-year scholarship program was initiated in 2011, a total of $83,000 has been awarded.

Modernism Week 2017 will also feature the fifth annual Joan Hayward Double Decker Architectural Bus Tour for students from Palm Springs High School and College of the Desert. Joan Hayward was an integral part of the formation, design, and implementation of the Premier Double Decker Architectural Bus Tours, which have become a signature event of Modernism Week. In addition to Modernism Week’s student scholarship program, it is with great pride that Modernism Week adds student tours to the program benefiting local students in Joan Hayward’s name.

n Born George Allen Aarons in 1916, Slim Aarons earned his nickname from his 6-foot-4-inch lanky frame and was oft described as “a thinner Jimmy Stewart.” Interestingly, Stewart was one of the subjects of Aaron’s classic black-and-white photo Four Kings of Hollywood along with Gary Cooper, Van Heflin, and Clark Gable, all clad in white tie, laughing it up on New Year’s Eve in 1957. Aarons would spend decades photographing the rich and famous doing what they do best: being rich and famous, a job Aarons described as “photographing attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places.”

His beginnings were much less auspicious. Raised by his grandparents in New Hampshire, Aarons enlisted in the army at 18 and was sent to West Point, where he talked his way into his first job as a hypo dipper — dunking developing prints in chemicals, or as Aarons put it, “the lowest level in photography.” He quickly graduated to photographer, shooting military maneuvers, and became a favorite among officers’ families.

Slim Aarons: Forever in StyleFor decades, Slim Aarons memorialized the rich and famous doing ordinary things, and in the process created an extraordinary body of work.

Attractive people doing attractive things in attractive places. Above, from left: Poolside Gossip’s subjects and crew take a break around the pool at the Kaufmann House; Helen Dzo Dzo Kaptur strikes a pose; socialite and writer C.Z. Guest with her son Alexander at their ocean-front estate in Palm Beach, Florida, in 1955; Alvin and Lilly Fuller pose with their fashionable European sports car, the Mercedes-Benz 190SL, in 1970.

When WWII started, Frank Capra visited West Point looking for photographers to document the war, and soon Aarons found himself on a Pan Am clipper headed for London. Aarons was wounded during the invasion of Anzio and was awarded a Purple Heart. “I gave it to a blonde I knew after the war. She said she liked the color.”

Postwar, Aarons went to work for Life photographing studio heads, movie stars, and socialites all over the world. Later, he’d shoot for Harper’s Bazaar, and at Holiday he worked alongside distinguished writers John Steinbeck and William Faulkner, always with a gorgeous Girl Friday by his side.

Aarons, who never used stylists or makeup artists, was so renowned that once in Palm Beach John F. Kennedy stopped his car, rolled down the window, and asked, “Was the woman in your Lake Como article really that beautiful?” During a race at Ascot in England, Aarons was assaulted by guards for using his camera in the royal enclosure and was rescued by his friend, Prince Phillip. Even mobsters

wanted in; Lucky Luciano, after being banished from Rome, asked Aarons to chronicle his move to Lercara Friddi, Sicily.

Because he was so prolific, and so in demand, his attic was chockablock full of unused photographs, and in 1974 he released a book titled A Wonderful Time, which retailed for $35. It did not do well. These days, the book commands upwards of $2,000 on eBay. It so brilliantly captures the fashions of the time that Anna Sui based an entire collection on it, and Michael Kors once remarked, “I don’t think there’s any American designer who doesn’t have a copy.”

On Feb. 23, 2017, Modernism Week celebrates Aarons with two events. At 3 p.m., Eric Rachlis of Getty Images will lead a discussion with Laura Hawk who will talk about her two decades working with Aarons as well as her new book, Slim Aarons: Women. Presenting the women who most influenced Aarons and the other remarkable personalities he photographed along the way, the book includes Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy,

Diana Vreeland, and Marilyn Monroe. A book signing will be held after the discussion ($15).

Following, at 4:15 p.m., is a discussion with Poolside Gossip’s Nelda Linsk, a longtime friend of Aarons and, at the time, owner of Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann House where Poolside Gossip was photographed with her, Helen Dzo Dzo Kaptur (wife of architect Hugh Kaptur), and actress Lita Baron. Hosted by Gary Johns, the discussion will be followed by a screening of The High Life: Slim Aarons, a new documentary by MTM Original Films and produced in partnership with Getty Images about the life and work of the photographer. For the fortunate patrons with presentation/film/reception tickets, following the film will be a swanky poolside cocktail party at the stunning midcentury modern former home of socialite-philanthropist Jeannette Edris Rockefeller, a place that would make Slim Aarons feel right at home. n The Chino Canyon Project is a pair of homes designed for desert terrain with dramatic views. The contrasts between the two houses is a study in the wide range of thinking and design philosophy that can co-exist under the Modernist label.

Palisades No. 1 is a new design from one of the most active of the younger generation of Palm Springs architects, Lance O’Donnell, principal of the firm o2 Architecture. The other home is an intriguing anomaly: A 50-year-old design, previously unbuilt, from the hand of a long-deceased architect, Alfred Beadle (1929–1998), who lived and worked in Phoenix.

Following a well-established tradition in the Coachella Valley of designing homes in close relationship with the natural landscape, the O’Donnell-designed house hugs the land, in this case, a sharp slope, with a 27-foot difference between the highest point and the lowest; the contrast between the strong horizontal lines of the home poking out of the sloping, boulder-strewn site makes for a memorable image. O’Donnell, an Indio native who studied architecture at UCLA, integrates the slope into the structure’s profile by breaking the house into a series of descending volumes that “cascade” down the slope. These volumes also seem to tuck into one another like the parts of a telescope, according to the architect.

Not surprisingly, a magnificent view will be one of the home’s chief pleasures. “The dramatic site with infinite southern sky allowed for uninterrupted views of the setting: a landscape of boulders, desert, and flora with the San Jacinto and Santa Rosa mountains as a backdrop,” O’Donnell says. The most visible part of the house is actually the

second level, containing three bedrooms and 3 1/2 baths. A series of deep shades and overhangs helps protect the canyon home from the intense desert sunlight, allowing for indoor-outdoor living. The lower level contains a casita, a media room, plus a garage ingeniously tucked into the hillside beneath the house.

In addition to his own house design, O’Donnell is helping supervise the construction of the Beadle home in a nearby lot in Desert Palisades. The design comes to fruition with the approval of Beadle’s widow, who asked that the architect’s longtime friend and associate, Ned Sawyer, help prepare the design documents into a finished home.

In his method of siting, O’Donnell follows an American tradition of integrating buildings into the landscape. This approach originated, at least in modern times, with Frank Lloyd Wright and his followers, including Richard Neutra, architect of the famed Kaufmann House, and John Lautner, creator of the Bob Hope House and Elrod House.

Beadle’s approach with this T-shaped structure is to lift the living area above the landscape, enhancing the view and providing a heady sense of being in the air and away from the soil. The models here are European Modernist buildings, notably the famous Villa Savoye, built in 1928 in the Paris suburb of Poissy by the Swiss-French architect Le Corbusier.

The Beadle house is structurally daring: It consists of a 50-foot-long rectangle balanced on a much narrower base; the “arms” of the rectangular house dangle in the air. These cantilevers (upper-

level masses without vertical supports) rely on the strength of massive, 14-inch-thick steel beams to hold its 14-foot-long arms above the ground. Nearly all the important functions of the house — the five bedrooms, the baths, the living room, and the kitchen — can be found on this uplifted story, while the lower level contains a garage and a mechanical room.

As an architect, Beadle is a purist who may remind Southern Californians of such midcentury designers as Pierre Koenig and Craig Ellwood. Like those masters, Beadle tends toward rectangular volumes built in steel and glass. (Beadle, in fact, was one of the few non-Californians to participate in the Cases Study Houses program of model homes, sponsored by Arts & Architecture from the 1940s through the 1960s.) While Beadle never built in the Coachella Valley, he was a friend of first-generation Palm Springs Modernist William Cody and partnered with the California architect on several design competitions.

O’Donnell says his role in the Beadle house is limited to supervising construction while remaining as faithful to the original design as possible. “I’m not taking any authorship here,” he says. “Essentially, this is an act of reconstruction.”

Yet reconstructing a design from the ’60s on a site far different than the one for which it was originally designed required making changes. Beadle designed his house for relatively quake-free Paradise Valley in Arizona, not a canyon a few miles off the San Andreas fault. Consequently, the house had to be re-engineered for a seismic environment.

The Beadle house was also a bit of a mystery because Beadle did not leave any indications that show the orientation of the home to the sun. An extant rendering shows that one end of the house faced a steep slope, while the other dangled over the desert panorama of Paradise Valley. After studying several sites in Desert Palisades, O’Donnell chose one near his own project on the upper slope and oriented the structure for the best exposure to prevailing breezes.

O’Donnell’s choice of site for the Beadle house also entailed a decision that Sawyer questioned: The original plan calls for a swimming pool directly in front of the house, in a rigorous design that made house and pool into a single design on the same structural grid. Giant boulders on the site, however, made it difficult to locate the pool in the original configuration. Taking a pragmatic approach used by other Palm Springs architects, O’Donnell worked around the rocks, repositioning the pool at an angle to the house. One advantage of this move was to open up space in front of the house which otherwise might have been almost entirely occupied by the pool. Yet Sawyer, remembering Beadle’s strong preference for consistency of design, still seems uneasy about breaking the home and the pool apart. “Beadle would have kept the house and the pool in the same geometry,” Sawyer says.

In the end, the spirit that connects the homes seems greater than the sum of their differences. Both houses are designed for rugged terrain and magnificent views, and both breathe the desert air. “Western Arizona and Southern California are both part of the Sonoran Desert,” O’Donnell points out. “Palm Springs is just the other side of the same desert.” — Morris Newman
