PAD is a rehoming shelter for abandoned dogs and cats. Since we opened our shelter in December 1998 we have foundloving homes for more than 6000 dogs, cats, puppies and kittens. Our placement rate is exceptional and in 2007 alone we

rehomed well over 1000 animals. So the next time you worry that all your efforts may not be making a difference, you onlyhave to remember the 6000 lives that have ALREADY been saved. TOGETHER, WE CAN MAKE A DIFFERENCE.

You can help by becoming a member (just 35/year), adopting or fostering a cat or dog, making a donation, dog walking, grooming and cleaning the cats, helping at our fund raising events, collecting bric-a-brac, displaying a collecting tin, or

    nding new members .

    The shelter is open 365 days of the year from 11am to 2pm and Monday-Friday (working days) from 4pm to 7pm.Tel: 952 48 60 84 | PAD, Apartado 170, Mijas 29650 | website: www.padcatsanddogs.org | e-mail [email protected]

I predict a riot is a amiliar theme roma recently structured sub-genre knownas new-wave punk rock, a melodioustake on our snarling DIY heroes romthe late 70s (Oh here he goes again, punks!Bear with me), and despiteits mainstream acceptance - and theact that we all have a couple o trackstucked away somewhere in a party play-list lets ace it, its crap. About as closeto a riot as Tai Chi, a oot-tapping orageinto metro-sexual rebellion, sometimesI actually sprinkle non-organic pumpkinseeds on my watercress and drink Cokezero and my parents love meeeeEnough is enough, so without urtherado, I introduce a bunch o teenagerswhove stolen our hearts here at MD.At the almost pre-pubescent age o 16ish, the core o garage-punk rock band Thee Vicars (check MD issue no.3or garage rock eature) is at the centreo something truly revolutionary. Bythrowing o the sticky-sweet coatingo an image-conscious permutationo the genus, and at the incrediblerisk o repetition on our part, Punk isback but this time with the kids, andthat means it might not die out whenthe old-wave o narco-addled punk pioneers nally give up the ghost.

7:30 on a Friday night, we take a recessrom Friday recess in the bar next door, stumble back into the o ce, shorthandcapabilities severely annulled (how rock nroll), and dial the mobile numberkindly provided by Lee, the bands

manager. Fortunately or us, as ar asscoops go, Lees phone rings in the tourbus somewhere on the A11 in Su olk,the whole band are present and movingat the hurtling vantypical speed o 65mph - not quick enough to get awayrom Bury St Edmunds apparently andcertainly none o them could get awayrom us now, even i they wanted to.

mD: Firstly, where are you headed, andplease tell us youre in a Transit Van?

TV: (Mike - bass and vocals - answersLees phone). We just le t Bury thank ullyand no, it isnt a Transit (Someone inthe back shouts out), Its a big Bluey,a Leyland cruiser second best but itworks.Mike continues, Were on ourway to Norwich, a wicked club called P2to play a gig.

MD: Do you get nervous be ore a gig?

TV: Never get nerves, we love it.

MD: We can hear a lot o infuences inyour music, but admittedly we are old which bands really drive you on?

    TV: The Remains.

MD: What, the Ramones? (one o ourmain, guessed infuences)

TV: Naaaaaa, The Remains.. and TheSeeds, 13th Floor Elevators, The Kinksand The Mummies. Weve taken all our

avourite bands and planned out ourown version o things. It works or us.

MD: Us too; it says on your website thatJasper (the drummer) smashes thingsup... like what?

TV: Well, collectively only our own stu ,but I did blow up an old valve amp oncethat wasnt mine but it was accidental.

MD: So is the controversial punk compliment o crowd-spitting comingback?

TV: No way, Some guy threw a glass atus once and I chucked my guitar at him,NO WAY would we be egged-on by aload o spitting, totally unacceptable!(Admittedly there are more virallytransmitted diseases these days, so welet them o this one)

MD: What time do the youngermembers have to go to bed?

TV: Ha ha (sarcastically) 6:30 on a non-gig night be ore the pub opens, and2:30 on a gig night (I guessed theydanswered that one be ore).

MD: Do you like the Buzzcocks? Yourlead singer Mike sounds a bit like PeteShelly on steroids.

    TV: De o.

MD: My claim to ame is that I once

went or a Kebab with Pete Shellyin Amsterdam (well, he had a ala el vegan punk). I you could go or aKebab with anyone in the world, past orpresent, who would it be?

TV: (Reuben the guitarist grabs the mic)Oooh thats a really tough questionSteve Marriott rom The Small Faces, but I dunno what hed be like, maybenot so cool so I might not like him.(Marcus the other guitarist pitches in)Maybe someone at, like the womanrom Gossipmind you shed just eateverything (everyone laughs thenLee has a turn). I reckon Bjorkd dosomething nice nweird with a Kebab(hes got a point).

MD: So whats up with Bury StEdmunds?

TV: (still Reuben) Ah, its okay, buttheres a very small mentality there, nodecent music, just copy-cringe IndyandMetal, we cant stand metal ormetallers. Its obsessed with religion aswell but it is on ley line with Glastonburyand Stonehenge thats how we cameto the band name.

MD: So wheres your avourite Venue?

TV: Weve played the Dirty Water Clubin London 4 times, we love it there, itsgot a great sound, good groove andPro essor Blindinis wicked.

TV: No one would get in this van a tera gig, trust me. The drummer getsmillions though, I got 5 or 6 but wereusually just buzzing a ter a gig and its just not on our minds.

MD: How did it eel winning BestPunk Act at the Indy Music Awards inLondon this year and then playing inront o 1,500 people?

TV: Just amazing, your mate PeteShelly presented us with the award(sarcastic), but then we werent usedto the big stage at The Forum, it eltbig, were just used to bumping intoeach other on stage but it was prettyamazing.

MD: What did you do a ter?

TV: We just went home rom London,ah no, a ew o us went out with ShaneMcGowen. (Like you do)

    MD: Whats he like?

TV: Hes alright; hes done a lot or us,top bloke.

MD: Were loving the vinyl releases,

why are you doing it, is it worth meinvesting in a turntable?

TV: Yeah, we love vinyl, most o ourcollections are on vinyl we areheavily infuenced by the 60s musicin our collections You cant be punk without a bit o vinyl and basically,CDs are or so t Indy kids (I guess thatmeans yes, you better buy a turntable).

MD: In all honesty, do you think youwere born 20 years too late?

TV: De nitely, we all wish wed lived inthe 60s (someone in the backgroundsays no and an argument sparks upin the end the decade-de ector comesround to peer pressure and startsagreeing with the others).
