USE OF THIS MANUAL
Before you handle the XF50, read this manual completely. It is important that you understand how to handle a
gun safely and the unique features of this product. This manual does not substitute for training from a qualified
instructor. Important safety topics are discussed in this chapter and throughout this manual. This manual
should stay with the rifle and it should be transferred with the rifle to subsequent owners. It will be replaced at
no cost by contacting the manufacturer.
This manual covers all variants of the XF50. Technical specifications are subject to change without notice.
SAFETY GUIDELINES
WARNING: Failure to follow safety guidelines may cause injury or death.
Ammunition
Valley Ordnance Works LLC. does not recommend the use of hand loaded, remanufactured or surplus
ammunition. The use of clean, dry and properly stored commercially manufactured ammunition will preserve
your warranty. Valley Ordnance Works LLC does not recommend the use of Military Surplus ammunition due
to high pressures that may be caused by aged powders.
We do not recommend the use of Incendiary (Blue Tip) rounds or API (Silver Tip – Armor Piercing Incendiary
) rounds as they have a tendency to start fires, (that’s what incendiary means….). AP (Black Tip - Armor
Piercing) - rounds can penetrate several feet of dirt, large trees and even steel plate over 1”thick. USE
CAUTION!!!!
Safety distance
The .50 BMG cartridges are made the same as an ordinary center fire rifle cartridge. Bullets fired from this rifle
could travel as far as 5 miles. Make sure you have an adequate backstop!
Ear protection
Hearing loss is permanent. Hearing loss from gunfire is cumulative, but the noise from even one shot may
cause permanent hearing loss. Wear both ear plugs and muffs while shooting. It is also your responsibility to
protect the hearing of those around you.
Muzzle Brake
The muzzle brake is essential to the design of your rifle and diverts a large portion of a shot’s blast rearward
and to the side of the muzzle. Your rifle must not be fired without it. People and objects should not be in the
area of the muzzle brake because its blast consists of high pressure, high temperature gas. All spectators should
use double hearing protection as well. The safest place for a spectator is directly behind the shooter. Shooting
SLAP (Saboted ammo) with a muzzle brake installed may cause severe injury or death! Firing your rifle
without the muzzle brake will subject your rifle and its accessories to damaging recoil. It could also cause the
shooter to be injured.
Eye Protection
Eye protection should be worn when shooting as well as when maintaining your rifle. It is normal for firing to
kick up airborne dust and debris. Glasses also protect you from scopes during recoil. Protect your eyes from
solvents and uncontained parts under spring pressure while doing maintenance on your rifle.
4
Assume every gun is loaded
Treat every gun s if it were loaded, until you personally prove otherwise. Do not trust your memory and do not
take anyone else’s word for it. Always look and feel for a empty chamber. DO NOT trust that the extractor
provides an empty chamber.
Beware of Barrel Obstructions
Be sure the barrel’s bore is free of obstructions before you fire your rifle. Even the smallest obstruction such as
a part of a patch, or even grease, will cause dangerously increased pressures that can rupture the barrel.
Muzzle Control
Always keep the muzzle pointed in a safe direction. Do not point your muzzle at anything that you do not
intend to shoot.
Keep your finger off the trigger
Keep your finger off the trigger and out of the trigger guard until your sights are aligned on your target and you
intend to shoot.
Identify your target and backstop
Before you pull the trigger, make sure of your target and what is beyond it. The rifle should never be fired at
surfaces where bullets are likely to stray off in unpredictable directions.
Maintain your rifle properly
Performing proper maintenance, as outlined in this manual, insures that your rifle will be safe to shoot and will
perform to design specifications for many years. Alterations, modifications or adjustments may damage your
rifle, make it unsafe to fire and will void warranty claims.
Alcohol, medications and drugs
Do not handle or operate your rifle under the influence of alcohol, medication or drugs.

Shooting and Recoil Management
The most common question we get is “how bad is the recoil?” We answer the question with this statement – It
depends upon your technique. If fired properly your XF50 will have a similar recoil to a 12 gage Duck load.
Here are some suggestions to help make your shooting experience more pleasant!
A) NEVER fire the XF50 without your muzzle brake! – The muzzle break will reduce the recoil
by 2/3!
B) Make sure you pull the stock firmly into your shoulder. This step cannot be stressed enough!
This is the single biggest thing you can do to help manage recoil.
C) Shoot sitting at a bench if possible. Lean forward into the rifle. Shooting prone does not allow
your body to recoil with the rifle so you absorb much more than if sitting.
D) Use a good stock and recoil pad. We do not recommend the use of the M4 style collapsible
stocks (because they can COLLAPSE!) We recommend the Magpul brand PRS stock, the Ace
ARFX stock or the Mil-spec A2 stock. A Slip over recoil pad (such as the Decelerator™ Brand)
further reduce the recoil of the rifle
E) We do not recommend letting children fire the rifle. (They don’t have the same body mass to
absorb recoil that adults do)
F) Use a recoil absorbing rest such as the Caldwell “Lead Sled”
6
Disassembly
1) Remove rear takedown pin
2) Shotgun open upper from lower
3) Retract bolt assembly
7
4) Using 7/16 wrench remove bolt handle
5) Remove bolt tube from rear of receiver and bolt head from side of receiver
6) Stripped bolt assembly shown
8
Trouble Shooting
A) Failure to fire
Failure to fire is usually caused by shooting old or defective ammunition. We highly recommend the use of only
high quality factory loaded ammunition.
In the event of a failure to fire, Wait 2 MINUTES before opening the bolt handle. This is a precaution against
hang fires (the slow ignition of a cartridge). If the round does not fire, We suggest removing the rear pin of the
receiver and re-cocking the hammer (WHILE KEEPING THE MUZZLE POINTED DOWN RANGE.) Re-
assemble the upper and re-try. If round does not fire on second try, carefully open the bolt after waiting an
additional 2 minutes and extract the round. Inspect the primer to see if it is dimpled. If the primer has been
struck dispose of the cartridge in a safe manner. If the primer has not been struck it is most likely caused by the
failure to re-cock the hammer by cycling the bolt handle all the way to the rear. In the event that the primer was
struck lightly, you may try to re-fire the round. It is possible that the primer is seated to deeply in the primer
pocket.
B) Stuck Bolt/Round
Our Extractor design is extremely robust. And will stand up to a good deal of abuse. That said it is NOT a
license to attack your rifle with a heavy blunt object! In the event of a stuck case we recommend the use of a 3/8
dia birch dowel or ONE PIECE cleaning rod (DO NOT use screw together type rod) placed down the bore to
gently tap the case loose from the chamber. (DO NOT Attempt to remove a UNFIRED / LIVE round this way)
In case of a stuck live round, safely take to a competent gunsmith to have the round removed
Shooting 50BMG Ammo is not like shooting regular center fire ammo. There is so much area to the case that a
higher pressure round may become stuck. This is a main reason to avoid reloads or surplus ammo. If you
experience a stuck round carefully inspect the fired case for pressure signs (ie, bulged primer, bulged case, case
separation, or primer ejection) If you find evidence of pressure carefully inspect your upper before using again.
C) Binding of bolt during operation
There is a distinct method to open and close the bolt on your upper. Due to the integrated cam on the bolt lugs,
and extractor cam in the receiver. You MUST lift the bolt handle all the way vertical into the extractor cam arc
at the top of the receiver. This should be done with a fluid motion and will provide the force necessary to “crack
loose” a 50BMG Case.

Your responsibility
Your XF50 is well-engineered and manufactured to the highest standards. It was proof-fired and carefully
inspected before it was packaged and shipped from our shop. Its safe use depends on you alone. You are the
ultimate safety device. Much like other mechanical devices, such as electric power tools, gas-powered
equipments, and cars, your rifle is safe unless handled in an irresponsible or uneducated manner.
