Subject: Activities to have during English is Easy Month
There are three things I’d like you to do.
Firstly, could you please help me write down the good and bad points of each activity for English is Easy Month as discussed by the teachers? Use the notes you made in the meeting with the English Department to complete the note sheet.
Secondly, please write an outline for a proposal about the online pen pal programme we’re planning on starting. Don’t forget to:
• statetheaim of the activity in the introduction
• talkabouthow the new online pen pal programme is different from a traditional pen pal programme
• mentionthebenefits and attractions of the programme
You should be able to find all the information you need on the school intranet discussion forum, in the emails I’ve forwarded to you as well as the notes you’ve taken earlier in the meeting with the English Department.
Lastly, during English is Easy Month, we will also be organising the English Carnival, which is a joint school event. I received an email about it this morning from Mrs Amy So and I would like you to help me reply her. Please remember to include the following points:
• she is welcome to accompany Andy to the carnival with her children
• she needs to get entry tickets (let her know how she can get them)
• the dress code for Andy on the day
• the arrival time and place for the choir rehearsal
• other details (e.g. time carnival starts, details of activities and performances)
Finally, ask her to contact me directly on 2100 0033 if she should have any further questions regarding the carnival.
Thanks for your help.

Email from April Lee to the English Panel
From: [email protected] To: [email protected], [email protected], [email protected] Date: 3 October 20_ _ Subject: Benefits of an online pen pal programme Attachments:
Dear English Panel members
Online pen pal programmes have been successful in many schools, and so I think it’d be worthwhile
to have one at our school. I think students would enjoy and benefit from this programme since it aims
to provide students with an opportunity to meet students from other countries. It also helps schools
build closer relationships with schools in other countries.
Regards
April Lee, Head of the English Department

From: [email protected] To: [email protected] Date: 5 October 20_ _ Subject: Joint school English Carnival Attachments:
Dear Mrs Lau
My nephew, Andy Wong of class 1B, will be participating in the choir performance at the joint school
English Carnival. As neither of his parents will be able to come with him, they have asked me to take
him to the carnival. Would it be all right if I also brought my two children, who are in primary school,
to attend the carnival? If so, please kindly tell me where I can get the admission tickets.
I look forward to your reply.
Yours sincerely
Amy So

Today, I heard something about the school launching an online pen pal programme where
students get to write to students around the world. Has anyone heard anything about it?

Hi, everyone! This is Mr Cheung, the IT teacher. I am happy to see that many of you are
interested in the online pen pal programme. Our school will be launching it during English
is Easy Month. The online pen pal programme is quite different from a traditional pen pal
programme in several ways. To begin with, only teachers will have access to students’
information, and students will need to let a teacher know when they’ve found someone they
want to write to. Then, the teacher will contact the student to see if he or she is interested.
That’s a brief introduction of the programme but don’t worry, the principal will be telling
you more about it during the morning assembly next week. We hope you will all enjoy the
programme! :)
Welcome back, Tony

From: Mrs Lau, Vice PrincipalTo: Tony Leung, Student Representative, English ClubDate: 5 October 20 _ _ Subject: Activities for English is Easy Month
There are three things I’d like you to do.
Firstly, I am going to hold an evaluation meeting about the programmes held during last year’s English is Easy Month, so I will need to get feedback from teachers. Please help me summarise what they thought about the programmes based on the notes you made in the meeting. Secondly, I’d like you to write a FAQ section on the new online pen pal programme that our school will launch. Briefly introduce the new programme and state its objectives and benefits. Then talk about the differences between traditional pen pal and online pen pal programmes. Finally, focus on what students think about the online pen pal programme. You may refer to comments made by participants in other schools and the school intranet discussion forum.
Lastly, the English Panel is planning on creating a reading programme at our school, and I would like you to help me write up a proposal to our principal, Ms Tai. Please remember to:
• statethe programme’s name and aims
• talkaboutthe problems we have found with regard to students’ reading habits (you can refer to the English Panel’s survey results for this; quote figures to support your points)
• explain how the programme will work
• mention the cost of running the programme (we should only spend money on promotional materials and new English books; for the promotion budget, use the same amount that we spent on promotional materials for the English Drama Competition)
Thanks for your help.

An online pen pal programme? The school my brother studies at has been running a similar
programme for a while. They have co-organised it with another school in London. It sounds
pretty exciting!

Excerpt from the English Panel’s report
Report on Students’ Reading Habits at Chai Wan College
Background
At the end of last year, the English Panel conducted a survey on students’ reading
habits. The purpose of the survey was to find out whether a reading programme
was necessary in school. A total of 842 questionnaires were sent out and 732
completed questionnaires were returned.
Results
In addition, 85% of the respondents said that they would read more if they had
less homework to do. 60% thought reading was a good habit.
Suggestions
The Panel suggested to create a reading programme. The programme would aim to
increase students’ interest in reading and encourage them to read more.

The English pen pal programme is great!I joined our school’s online English pen pal programme last year. Even after a year,
my Australian pen pal and I often write to each other. I feel that I’ve gained a lot by
participating in this programme. I’d definitely like to join again next year!
