[model answer]

The Education Abroad Centre (EAC) has been a trusted expert in overseas education with years of experience in

providing quality overseas education programmes, which have successfully helped over 100 000 students further

their studies abroad. [DF 3] We aim to widen students’ exposure to different cultures of the world and to increase

their competitiveness in both the local and international markets. [DF 5] Currently, we are affiliated with institutions

in 17 countries worldwide. [DF 5]

Many parents and students consult an education agency like the EAC when they apply for overseas institutions.

One of the most important advantages is that a professional education agency can help you choose the overseas

programme that is the most suitable for your background, budget, career objectives and personal interests.

Furthermore, the agency will be likely to provide students with extensive support after they settle down in the target

country, thus making it easier to solve any problem that may arise during their stay.

To learn more about what we do, we encourage you to join our upcoming seminar. There will be an introduction of

the education programmes we provide, upcoming programmes this year and new destinations. Some of our past

participants will also share their overseas experiences.

Re: Overseas education programme for your son

Dear Ms Cheung

Thank you for your email. I understand that your son is interested in studying the English language and culture,

especially English fi lm art, and you also want him to learn something practical that can be applied in his future

career.

I therefore recommend our new overseas education programme in Australia. The brand new programme includes

a Creative Writing course [DF 8] and a Business English course. [DF 8] You may refer to our website for further

information about this new programme. [DF 2]

If your son has decided to study abroad, we have several tips for him. First of all, we recommend that students stay

with a host family in order to immerse themselves in the local culture. If your son is planning to work, remind him

to stick to the work rules stated in his student visa. Last but not least, students who plan to stay for a longer period

of time should always try to stay connected with friends and family.

Please do write to us again if you have further enquiries.

Yours sincerely

Davis Ho

Students’ preferences for overseas education

Dear Mr Ho

I have gathered some information about students’ preferences for overseas education according to your

requirements.

Firstly, one source identifi es Business and Management, English, Hospitality and Social Sciences as the four most

popular subjects for overseas programmes.

As far as factors governing programme choice are concerned, I found out that some people would consider

the medium of instruction an important factor. Some are concerned about whether there are internship or

apprenticeship opportunities, while others may look at whether the qualifi cations acquired through the programme

are internationally recognised.

According to fi gures I found, the US has been the most popular destination in recent years. [DF 3 & 5] This

popularity has been attributed to the infl uence of American fi lms and culture. [DF 3] Figures also show that there is

a steadily increasing number of students going to China [DF 5] to study and start a career, [DF 3] which might be

due to the increasing economic power and business opportunities in China. [DF 3]

Please let me know if you need further information on these fi ndings.

Regards

Geoffrey

Studying overseas – a quick guide

[Source: DF 1, 3, 7 & 9]

As a stranger to a cultural environment, you will want to go out more and mingle with the locals. [DF 3] When

coming across things that are not commonly practised in your own culture, stay cool and keep an open mind. [DF 7]

It is also advisable to join local interest groups, clubs or societies, [DF 9] and, if allowed, get some work experience

where you get to work closely with locals. [DF 7]

There are a few ways to help you learn a foreign language fast, such as getting a good phrasebook or

dictionary and watching local TV and films, as well as reading books. Also, try to be brave and practise the

language on others. Better yet, make friends with local students.

Before you depart, make sure you pack pictures of your friends and family, and objects that symbolise important

memories. [DF 7] They will definitely provide comfort whenever you need it. You may make friends with students

from your country or ethnic group as long as it does not stop you from mingling with the locals. [DF 7] It is also

quite effective to stick to some of the routines and hobbies you love to do back home. [DF 9]

The EAC presents an exciting new programme

We are excited to announce that this year we are going to launch a new overseas study programme in Australia in

partnership with Kangaroo International School (KIS). [DF 2] There will be six subjects for students to choose from,

including Arts, Business, English, IT, Hospitality and Social Sciences. In addition, to ensure all participants get the

opportunity to brush up their English skills, all subjects include a compulsory ‘Everyday English’ course.

We are confident that participants will find it easy to adapt to the new environment in Australia in several ways

facilitated by KIS. Besides providing counselling services for students in need, the school will hold regular social

activities for international students. There will also be affordable accommodation on campus, and those who wish to

find a host family to stay with will also receive assistance from KIS.

We also believe that the new programme will be as successful as our current overseas study programmes. Many of

our programmes last year received positive feedback. Some claimed that they made many good friends, while others

learned precious transferable skills that can be applied to their future careers.

Of all the programmes we provide, our Japan programme was the most popular according to our online poll. [DF 4]

Many voters are into Japanese culture and they want to experience it in person through our programme. [DF 6] We

hope our new programme will gain as much popularity as the Japan programme.
