Barbara Tracy

Sincerely,

Barbara Tracy MMTA President

Welcome to the 2014 MMTA Collegiate Competitions!

One of the goals of the Mississippi Music Teachers Association (MMTA) is to encourage and support music teaching and performance. Our Collegiate competitions offer an opportunity for our MS college students to perform for an artist who will evaluate their performance with comments and awards. Both the teacher and student benefit from this performance and evaluation experience. Our Collegiate competitions are usually held the first weekend in March. MTNA (Music Teachers National Association) competitions are held during our Fall conference, and MS winners in MTNA competitions progress on to Division and National competitions. Our 60th Fall MMTA Conference will be held October 31-November 1, 2014, at the University of Southern Mississippi.

We thank Julia Mortyakova and the music faculty of Mississippi University for Women for hosting this event. Please enjoy the wonderful facilities and campus of the “W”. We also thank Rosangela Sebba, Vice President for National and State Competitions, for all her work in preparation for this event. Our Public Relations Vice President, Stephanie Holmes, prepared this booklet and will be taking pictures of winners to use in our MMT (Mississippi Music Teacher online newsletter) available on http://msmusicteachers.org.

Please remember that all the performances are open to the public. We thank both teachers and students for supporting this important MMTA activity, and we welcome parents and guests.

As an active soloist and chamber musician, Joseph engages a variety of audiences with an energetic, thoughtful and entertaining program of diverse repertoire for the guitar. Dr. Elliot Frank of East Carolina University hails, “Joseph  Ikner  plays  with  a  beautiful  and rich tone, one possessed by very few guitarists. One of the finest young guitarists of his generation.” Joseph’s  debut  recording,  Premiere, has been featured on public radio and is available on itunes.com and CDBaby.com

Joseph has directed guitar studies at Campbell University and served on the faculties of Shenandoah Conservatory, Barton College, Johnston Community College and Coastal Carolina Community College and has served as a guitar pedagogy advisor for the Peabody Conservatory of Music.
