CONTEXT

Visual Connection: Literary Center

Visual Connection describes a goal and device of my earliest building design, the Literary Center. Located on Ludlow Avenue, a cultural hub just north of campus, the literary center is designed for reading, writing, community gathering, exhibitions. It is meant to serve the community by providing a place for modern learning. The literary center feature gallery space for art or displays, a place for large presentations or lectures, personal workcubes, and a suite for a visiting author, artist, lecturer, or volunteer.

In designing the literary center, I was inspired by the views surrounding the site. I sought to emphasize the view of the park and fountain across the street by strictly limiting the traffic-abstructing view on the ground floor, and allowing the view to be experienced at almost every space on the second floor. Another goal in the design is to provide a separation personal workspace that allows the user to have private, quiet space to work without being completely cut off from his or her surroundings and views- or create a visual connection without noise distraction. In order to accomplish this goal, there are glass cubes throughout the space that provide a sound barrier, but not a visual one. The workcubes vary in size an openness to accommodate for different types of use, whether it be for one person or a small group. These cubes also influence other aspects of the building, such as the facade, the jutting cubes on the back elevation, and center atrium space. The cubes also serve as skylights and display cases. Finally, it was also important for the space to maintain flexibility in order to serve a number of different functions and be easily adaptable for ever-advancing technology.

Grid Tectonics: Elementary School

This model is a conceptual model of an elementary school that has been derived from tectonics and a grid of tones and shapes meant to represent buildings and space. The grid is informed by the spaces previously existing on the site and puts emphasis on the central linear corridor, along which all the spaces are oriented. The model also explores a variety of scales meant to accommodate users of all sizes. It also experiment with porosity and space creation with lines, planes, frames, and masses.
