Thanks-Giving: a holiday for every day.

as I write this article, I remember that my car told me it was 28 degrees outside

this morning. The cold crisp air of autumn has now arrived and with it the promises

of holidays anew as we say farewell to the marathon of early fall known lovingly as the High Holy Days. As President Abraham Lin-coln proclaimed on October 3rd of 1863, “the last Thursday of No-vember next, as a day of Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens.”

Thanksgiving has become a treasured American institution. It is a time when families get together to eat (often over eat) and share with each other remembrances, new people and places in their lives and feelings of thankfulness for what they have. If this sounds idyl-lic, in many cases it is, as there are far too many in this country and around the world that have far too little (even in 2015) to be thankful for. At our tables this year let us try to remember that it is not just about us and turn our attention to thoughts and deeds to make this world a better place for all.

After all the turkey, the fixins’, the football and the pie, give some thought to the following to make Thanksgiving a daily occurrence. I know that the meaning of Thanksgiving is to thank G-d for the bounty that he has seen forth to bestow upon us.

Yes, I agree, but similar to our requests for forgiveness on Yom Kippur, where we need to make amends with our friends and fam-ily members directly, why not also extend our thanks to those who rightfully deserve our thanks. When someone, anyone does some-thing that benefits you in anyway, say Thank You. Let them know that you appreciate their efforts, their acts of kindness extended out in time of need.

To the postman who is there in all forms of weather – Thank You. To the crossing guard that cares for our kids on the way to school – Thank YouTo our kids for making us laugh when we need it most – Thank You.To our parents for their sacrifices so that we have our lives – Thank You.

As our 16th president said so eloquently, for things for which we are grateful “They are the gracious gifts of the Most High God. Yes let us praise and give thanks to our Father in Heaven but let us remember all creatures great and small who through their acts of courage and tender mercies make our own lives better every day.”

To all of you enjoy Thanksgiving!

Toda Raba – Thank You!!

Thanksgiving: The Jewish american holiday

One of the reasons, sociologist’s say, that we American Jews love

to gather around the table on Thanks-giving, is because it is the quintes-

sential American holiday. In the constellation of American celebrations, Thanksgiving is the day in which all of us can par-ticipate. It has no religious associations---its focus is on Turkey, Football and Parades.

But let’s remember that the Puritans were a pretty religious group. They knew their bible, and they knew the Torah (though they called it the Old Testament). Some scholars suggest that many of those who made the journey to America had spent time in Amsterdam. They knew and interacted with the large Jewish community there.

The pilgrims saw themselves- in their own words- as the ‘new Israel’ and America as the new ‘promised land’. As they sailed across the ocean, they remembered the Passover story and saw themselves as the Israelites of old, crossing a sea in search of religious and political freedom. As they survived that first brutal winter, those who survived (many died that first year), turned to the bible again, and created a celebration based on Sukkot. They saw themselves again as the Israelites of old, who wandered in the harsh conditions of the wilderness. In that first winter, ra-tions became so scarce that 5 kernels of corn a day became their staple. Then, G-d stood by their side, brought them through the wilderness, and it was now time to give thanks for the bounty and harvest before them. As we sit as at our Thanksgiving tables this year, we will give thanks for the freedoms, religious and political that our democ-racy affords, and we will be grateful for the many blessings we have in our lives.

There is nothing more American, and nothing more Jewish than this.

The Ten Commandments for Congregational Singing

There’s nothing quite like the sound of a whole room full of people singing together.

Choirs are beautiful; I do love the sound of a trained choir of great singers. A good professional orchestra is the aural equivalent to the finest possible chocolate, as far as I’m concerned. A room full of everyone singing at once, even those who don’t consider themselves singers, is powerful and unifying for everyone participating. Singing as a group brings us together as a community in a way that nothing else can, whether it’s an intimate group for Shabbat evening or morning, a crowded sanctuary - full on Yom Kip-pur, a collection of old friends and visitors at B’nai Mitzvah, or a classroom full of children or teens. As our individual voices join to together in a new sound, we lift each other up to rise above our own potential, creating the sound of a community that spans the generations. We lose our differences, our quarrels, and our anxieties. The invisible walls that divide us crumble at the sound of our voices uniting as one.

In the interest of continuing to create that beautiful sound and all that comes with it, I’d like to share the “Ten Commandments of Congregational Singing,” by Hazzan Mitchell Kowitz.

Some of you already live by these commandments. You know who you are if you do, and I want you to know that I truly appreciate all your voices! To those who have not yet adopted these, I invite you to consider them.

F R O M T H E D E S K O FC a N T O R S H a N a

1. Thou Shalt Sing!2. Thou Shalt Sing with all thy heart, with all thy soul, and with all thy might. 3. Thou Shalt Sing fearlessly, ignoring the possible wondering glances of your neighbors. They would like to sing with you if they had the nerve, and they will eventually sing with you, if you continue. 4. Thou Shalt Sing joyfully, as it is written by the prophet Isaiah: “Sing, O Heaven! Be joyful, O earth! Break forth into singing, O mountains!”5. Thou Shalt Sing with reverence, for music is prayer.6. Thou Shalt Not be Afraid to Sing, for though an individual may pray in prose or even in wordless silence, a congregation must sing.7. Thou Shalt Not Resist new melodies, for it is written in the book of Psalms: “Sing unto God a new song!”8. Thou Shalt Not Mumble the melody, but shalt sing it out loud, even if with occasional mistakes.9. Thou Shalt Not Hesitate to sing together with the trained voices of the choir. They want you to join with them. 10. Thou Shalt Not Forget the words of the Psalmist: “I will sing to Adonai as long as I live”.

MJCBY has achieved its goal of 18 Legacy commitments during the first year of this vital program. This is indeed an ac-complishment to celebrate, but believe me, it is only the beginning. You will be hearing more in the next few months about how you can be part of this exciting time in the life of your synagogue home.

The Benton Family invites the congregation to celebrate with us as our son, Maxwell Benjamin, is called to the Torah as a

Bar Mitzvah on November 7, 2015. Max has worked very hard to reach this milestone in his life.

Max is a seventh grade student at the Chatham Day School. Max enjoys playing basketball and riding horses. Max also enjoys gaming on his computer. He loves to spend time with his friends and family. Max loves to attend sleep away camp and especially enjoys his time with camp friends. Max is smart, funny, thought-

ful and loyal.

For his Bar Mitzvah project, Max will be working with Special Needs Athletic Program. Through this program, Max will coach and assist special needs children in playing vari-ous sports, especially basketball. He mentored children with special needs is extremely important to Max. He has also spent time at the Friendship Circle.

A big thank you from Max and his entire family to his teachers, Cantor Shana, and Rabbi Nesson for all their work in preparing Max for this special day.

With love,Karen, Fred, Sam and Hannah Benton

it is with great pride that the Stifelman Family invites family, friends and the congregation of Morristown Jewish Center Beit Yisrael to

join us in celebration as our daughter, Kati Stifelman, is called to the Torah as a Bat Mitzvah on November 21, 2015. We are incredibly thankful to Cantor Shana, Rabbi Nesson and the many MJCBY Religious School teachers that have helped Kati reach this important milestone.

Kati is a 7th grade honor student at Randolph Middle School where she has been a cast member of the school musical for the past two years. Kati is also a dancer at Dance Academy of North Jersey where she takes ballet, jazz, lyrical, contemporary, modern tap and musical theater.

She is a proud member of the prestigious and nationally recognized DANJ dance company.

Kati has been studying and hanging out with her friends at MJCBY since she was two years old. Many of her closest friends have come from her time here. For her mitzvah project, she has teamed up with Emily Solotoff and Brooke Levey, to raise money and awareness for Breast Cancer Research. Kati decided to take on this project when her friend’s mom was diagnosed with Breast Cancer last spring. She wanted to find a way to help. Together, they have formed a foundation and have created, presented and implemented several fundraisers to reach their goals.

We are incredibly proud of Kati as she reaches this milestone and hope that you can join us along with Kati’s relatives and friends that will be flying in from as far away as Hong Kong on November 21st.

With Love,David, Jeanne, Alex, Jacquie and Kati Stifelman
