A THOUSAND POiNTS OF liGHT – MJCBY STYlE

This time of year as the days grow short-er and daylight is at a premium, we are

blessed with the oncoming of Hanukkah, the Festival of Lights. Each year, lighting each night’s candles, whether at home, in Synagogue or in a public space - to me is a magical time. Whether it be the heroics of the Maccabees, the aroma of the latkes frying or the fun of playing dreidel with the kids in our lives, it is a special time of year. Hanukkah can fall anytime between the end of November (Thanksgiving) and the end of December (Christmas). Here is a fact that just occurred to me (or reoccurred). The first day of Hanukkah is the 25th day of Kislev. What other holiday falls on the 25th day of a month (December); that is correct. A total coincidence? Chew on that while you devour a few latkes.

Back to my title: When George Herbert Walker Bush was presi-dent, he challenged the nation to actively do for others by invok-ing the phrase “a thousand points of light.” Each point of light was to be an act, a gesture, to make the life of another a little brighter, a little easier. Judaism teaches us that the injunctive “Tikkun Olam” or repairing the world is the job for each and every one of us. Some do it through their financial assets, some with sweat of their brow but whether through a mega grant or a small act of loving kindness, we all do it with our hearts.

Here at MJCBY, we are not short on individuals who give their time, their efforts and their love to help our congregation, our congregants and members of the greater community around us. Here are brief profiles of 10 individuals or groups of individuals who make up our own “points of light.”

Neil & Dennis Frigand – the two sons of our beloved patriarch Herman J. Frigand (z’l) are here almost weekly, available just with a phone call to assist us with the numerous mailings that need to go out to keep you informed.

Mark Bender – Our Chair of Facilities, Technology and Security who each Sunday and often during the week, addresses the many needs to keep out building and grounds in top shape and spar-kling condition.

lew Stone – Our Chair of History who devotes his time to pre-serve the heritage of MJCBY and keeps alive the stories of those of our past that makes today possible.

Fran loewensteiner – Former master of our newsletter with Meryl Balaban for many years. She now keeps us stocked with the paper that we use to print almost everything that you see in print. She

F R O M Y O U R E X E C U T i v E D i R E C T O R …

has made Staples a regular donor to our paper supply. She never arrives here empty handed. lois lieberman – What brings a smile to one of our seniors that so much enjoys her weekly meeting here at the Shalom Club but cannot not easily get here? That smile appears when Lois pulls up at her door to offer her a weekly ride.

Eliza Schleifstein – Need a special brochure or get an invitation produced and ready when you need it most. Eliza has no trouble in answering the bell to get the job done both on time and in exquisite fashion.

Gemilut Hasadim – When a member has had recent surgery or an extended illness and needs someone to provide meals while they are recovering, Meryl Balaban, Helena Kloder and their team are there to provide what may be needed. This is our helping hands to warm our hearts.

Soup Kitchen – Lou Bodian, his team captains and all of our help-ers monthly bring smiles to the faces of hundreds in our commu-nity who need our help with a warm meal and a friendly greeting when they need it.

Donna Gross – Mah Jongg Magnet is not her only claim to fame. If a job is needs to be done, she works behind the scenes in order to enhance the beauty of our building and our experience as part of this congregation. Did you notice our new Bimah covers for the HHD’s?

Fern Spitzer – For so many years whether out front or in the background, Fern has devoted a big part of her life to making our lives better. Scores of our own children have grown up knowing the loving heart of Morah Fern.

We cannot forget the good work done by our Sisterhood through its Kiddush Committee under the guiding hands of Michelle Usiskin and Kathy Neibart and the Men’s Club through its Annual Blood Drive organized by David Sakofs.

Toda Raba to you all.

So during this time of “light,” I borrowed from Peter Yarrow as he and his partners, Paul and Mary, sang so beautifully, “Don’t let the light go out…” How? Join your fellow ten members listed above and become a precious point of light. That light exemplifies the glow of our Hanukkiah and let our acts of loving kindness ensure that the light that has lasted for so many years will continue to burn brightly in our hearts and the lives of others.

Hanukkah Sameach,Gerry

i’m in the middle of reading a National Bestseller by Malcolm Gladwell called David and Goliath: Underdogs, Misfits, and the Art of Battling Giants. The premise is that those who appear to be at a disadvantage are more

frequently set up to succeed than we realize. Everyone loves the story of the underdog, the one who comes from behind, the one no one expected to win who goes on to win anyway, though sometimes not in the traditional way that “winning” is expected to look.

It must be one of the most common motifs ever, since the time of the Torah, of course! The author opens with the story of David and Goliath, explaining some of the disadvantages the warrior and giant Goliath probably had, despite his great size, strength, and battle experience, and some of the advantages David probably had, despite the fact that he was just a young shepherd. From there, he goes on to discuss such unlikely topics as the strategies of middle school girls’ basketball teams, the challenges multi-millionaires face when raising children, the rise of impressionist art, some unexpected statistics about large versus small class size, and the surprisingly high rate of dyslexia among successful entrepreneurs.

The most inspiring angle of this well-written book is the way in which the theme of those who appear to be excluded or to lack some sort of essential often find that their apparent weakness can transform into an unexpected strength; and conversely, those who appear to be in a position of power may have challenges and difficulties they could not foresee. It’s actually the perfect read for Hanukkah, when we celebrate not only religious freedom and the miracle of God’s presence in our lives, but the victory of the Mac-cabees, few in number, oppressed for generations, who figured out a way to succeed despite their disadvantages. May the memory of the Maccabees, our favorite underdog ancestors from more than 2000 years ago, be an inspiration to us, not just in battle, but at any time that we find ourselves in a position when we think that our path forward is blocked, and that our goals are beyond our reach. This Hanukkah, may all your challenges and difficulties be turned to your advantage!

MJCBY members attended the Shorashim (Roots) event on November 12. Our do-

nors have contributed to the “Create a Jewish Legacy” program to ensure our Jewish values continue for the next generations.Rabbi Leder (the keynote speaker) told us about the concept of being a good ancestor: “Our ancestors standing at Sinai agreed to be responsible for people they would never ever know. They agreed to perpetuate our faith and our values of decency. Ask yourself – how is it that a flame kindled over 2000 years ago in a temple in Jerusalem came to flicker above the ark in every synagogue all over the world in the 21st century? It’s because of those Jews who came before us.”Join our new Legacy Society in this labor of love.Become a Tomorrow’s Builder – We Are MJCBY.

In the early 1930’s, Hitler began firing Jewish musicians across Europe. Overcoming extraordinary obstacles, violinist Bronislaw Huberman, moved these great musicians to Palestine and formed a symphony that would become the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra. With courage, resourcefulness and an entourage of allies, including Arturo Toscanini and Albert Einstein, Huberman saved nearly 1000 Jews and guaranteed the survival of Europe’s musical heritage.

Recently, our teachers attended the Early Childhood Conference

at Temple Emanu-El in Westfield. I have been going to these

conferences for the past 25 years, and each time I go I walk away

with a new perspective on different ways to teach our children.

What remains the same is that children learn best through self-

discovery, creative play, exploration and asking lots of questions.

Our job as early childhood educators is to help guide and to present

situations that will help foster our children’s curiosity. This is what

Shalom Yeladim is all about.

We had our annual Thanksgiving Feast. The teachers put on a little play for the children. We boarded the Mayflower and set sail to our new land. The children learned all about friendship, family, Pilgrims, Native Americans and just how important it is to help one another.

SY had a huge Food Drive. We donated all of the food to the local Food Pantry before Thanksgiving. Thank you SY families for being so generous. The children also made Thanksgiving cards for the Shalom Club and for others less fortunate than themselves. I think there is no better time to teach children about giving to others.

With Thanksgiving over, it is time to start teaching the children about the story of Hanukkah and the miracle that happened so long ago.

Once again, you are our best advocates for the pre-school, help us spread the word.

Happy Hanukkah!

Marla

Religious School News

A SPECIAL YOUTH SHABBAT On November 14th, our congregation witnessed a wonderful celebration. Minyonaires, Junior Congregation attendees and Tot Shabbaters (about 40 children and teens) joined together and stood on the Bimah for Concluding Prayers. It was a sight and sound to behold. Many parents and congregants said, "I wish we could take a picture."

With Cantor Shana's guidance, all of the Torah readings and most of the Haftorah were read by Minyonaires in the Main Sanctuary. And still more..several of our Junior Congregation attendees read Torah as well. We are so proud of (kvelling) our children and teens. Thank you to Rabbi Nesson, Cantor Shana, our Gabbis, Morah Mimi and our parents/congregants for creating a sense of pride and shared community. We look forward to many more Special Shabbats.

Our next Family Shabbat Service is Friday night December 4 at 7:30 PM, Junior Congregation is December 12 at 10:30 AM, Minyonaires is December 19 and Tot Shabbat is December 12.

B'Shalom,

Heidi Schleifer-Fleischman
