Although the Corn Palace dates back to 1892, it transforms itself each year -- with real corn.

Lots of corn -- 275,000 colorful ears are carefully sliced and nailed into place on the murals that adorn the building. It’s all done by hand, a folk art form that is all but lost -- except at the World’s Only Corn Palace.

The process begins early; each spring, local farmers plant 12 different colors of corn in carefully separated plots to ensure plants don’t cross-pollinate and dilute the purity of the colors. At the same time, local artist Cherie Ramsdell begins composing new murals. To create the decorative frames around the images, artisans combine bundles of ryegrass and sour dock, a hearty prairie plant, and staple the bundles to the frames.

In late August the mural images themselves are transferred from sketches to roofing paper, which is nailed into place on the walls of the palace. Then the crew goes to work: colored ears of corn are carefully sawn in half, trimmed, and nailed to the paper to create the variegated images for which the Corn Palace is famous.

The 2014 theme is “Remember When,” and the murals include depictions of horse-drawn carts, a farmer aboard a tractor, the evolution of the windmill, drive-in movies, early telephones, and a soda fountain. The 2015 murals, which will be placed in Fall 2014, will celebrate a new theme.

The new architecture planned for the Corn Palace revives some of the early traditions, said Eric Amel, of MSR, the Minneapolis architecture firm in charge of the project.

“We’ve been given this amazing opportunity to rediscover vintage Corn Palace elements while retooling the experience for the next generation of South Dakota tourists,” he said. “It always makes you smile to come around the corner onto historic Main Street Mitchell and see the one-of-a-kind Corn Palace.”

The first Mitchell Corn Palace was part of a late 19th century race by farming communities to make names for themselves, promote their products and draw curious visitors. Aberdeen had the Grain Palace,

Rapid City the Alfalfa Palace. Rod Evans, who wrote “Palaces on the Prairie,” found records of 34 palaces in 24 towns across the Midwest. All are gone, except for the World’s Only Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The new Corn Palace design, shown in the drawing on page 5, will transform today’s onion domes into leafy, more organic sculptures that recall the traditional domes of years past. Also, a balcony will be added over the Main Street entrance. The new design will include mosaic patterns at the street level much like the historical Corn Palaces of the past.

Tell the kids to put away their cell phones and video games. At Dakota Discovery Museum, they won’t need them. At the museum, on the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University, they can experience what it was like to live as an immigrant, settler, cowboy or Native American.

Dakota Discovery Museum offers a way to immerse yourself in the history of the Great Plains of South Dakota. The hands-on displays tell the story of the region through artifacts, photos, memorabilia and structures that have been preserved.

Learn about our Native American inhabitants and their Plains culture that flourished throughout the vast, open region before European settlers arrived. Tour the tanned buffalo-hide tipi or the buffalo mural at the Middle Border History Gallery.

The history of this time is displayed in the works of art at the Gates and Terrace Changing collections, featuring historical objects, textiles, costumes, archival material

and photographs. Here learn about the early settlers of America and the impact of the fur trade and the Gold Rush on the early inhabitants.

To get a real sense of early Midwestern life, it’s all aboard at the Dimock Depot! Visitors can also walk through the period-era Beckwith House, built in 1886 for Louis and Mary Beckwith. Mr. Beckwith was one of the cofounders of the very first Corn Palace in 1892. All aboard at the. Step back in time and imagine an era when trains were the most popular means of travel.

Dakota Discovery is a place where families are encouraged to learn together through activities and museum scavenger hunts. Enjoy

two art museums that house original works by Harvey Dunn, Oscar Howe, Charles Hargens, James Earle Fraser, Gutzon Borglum and others.

Beyond highlights of the museum there is an outdoor campus which provides additional hints at life way back when. The outdoor campus includes a schoolhouse, church, and outdoor shelter.

While you are on campus, stop by the McGovern Library right across the street from the Dakota Discovery Museum. Just inside the door is the McGovern Legacy Museum that looks at the career of hometown hero, Sen. George McGovern. It’s fitting that the McGovern Library is on

the campus of Dakota Wesleyan University. Before the author and activist served in the U.S. House of Representatives and the U.S. Senate, he was a student and later professor at the college.

Sen. McGovern was the Democratic presidential nominee in 1972. He lost to incumbent Richard Nixon in an emotionally charged era remembered for the Vietnam War, the Watergate scandal and Nixon’s resignation in 1974.

An unapologetic liberal and staunch opponent to the Vietnam War,

McGovern also made less public, more far-reaching contributions. He is perhaps best remembered for his commitment to ending world hunger, a cause commemorated at

the museum. His legacy of leadership

lives on through the McGovern Center for Leadership & Public Service at Dakota Wesleyan University.

McGovern’s museum displays many photos that tell the story of McGovern’s rich life experiences as a World War II bomber pilot, college professor, Democratic organizer, U.S. Representative and Senator, director of Food for Peace under President John F. Kennedy, and U.N. ambassador. Many of the stories are told in audio and video displays narrated by McGovern himself. The senator died in 2012.

This National Historic Landmark overlooks Firesteel Creek, where some 1,100 years ago about 200 early inhabitants grew corn, beans, squash, sunflowers and amaranth.

Long before big box stores and modern conveniences, these skilled farmers thrived on the fertile soils and abundant waters. In addition, archeologists have found this area was also a major bison-processing center. Here the people extracted bone grease from the local bison and used it to manufacture pemmican, a high-energy food made of meat and dried fruit.

Although our knowledge of this village increases every year, the people who inhabited this region are still a mystery that archeologists continue to uncover. With all the unknowns, including the village name, there is much to discover.

In 1975, the Mitchell Prehistoric Indian Village Preservation Society was formed to preserve the site. The society’s work has allowed visitors to watch the excavations, learn about

the science of archeology and explore this long-lost ancient village.

Watch as the students from the University of Exeter, England, who visit each summer, uncover more clues from these historic people and their land in the Thomsen Center Archeodome where excavations take place. You and your family can even get your hands dirty and help the archeologists wash and sort hundreds of artifacts. Tour the Boehnen Memorial Museum that holds a reconstructed earthen lodge and 1.5 million artifacts. Live-interactive excavation site, exhibits, and children’s activities are also available. A student library and video room are available to learn more about artifacts and life in the Indian village.

Children can dig for a free arrowhead and watch a demonstration on how to throw a spear using an atlatl. Don’t miss out on the storytellers, Native American games, lectures, artists and special events such as the Archeology Awareness Days in July. In

winter, play games on frozen Lake Mitchell, just as these first settlers did. Shop some of the finest Native American items such as indigenous and regional art, jewelry, pottery books and much more. There is plenty of parking for RVs and buses.

a few blocks from The mITchell corn palace.

The former Carnegie Library was constructed in 1903 with funds from steel tycoon Andrew Carnegie. Like his other namesake libraries, Carnegie lavished the Mitchell library with elaborate exterior stone work, classic wood trim and a spacious and open interior.

However, the most striking feature of the Carnegie Resource Center is the domed ceiling above the atrium. Well-known Native American artist Oscar Howe hand painted a colorful mural, “Sun and Rain Clouds Over Hills.”

Howe was hired by the Works Progress Administration to paint the mural in 1940. His first day of painting did not go well, as the paint he chose did not stand up to the heat of summer. When he returned for his second day of work, he discovered that the previous day’s painting had been ruined.

Howe, undaunted, chose a more durable type of paint and started over. His perseverance paid off – the circular mural is one of Oscar Howe’s most well-known public art projects.

Today the Carnegie Resource Center is home to the Mitchell Area Historical Society and the Mitchell Area Genealogical Society. The center houses a permanent collection of Corn Palace memorabilia going back to 1892, when the first Corn Palace was

built. You will also find changing historical and genealogical exhibits, extensive documents for research, prints by Oscar Howe and an impressive collection of historic photos from the Mitchell area.

The Corn Palace collection includes a fascinating array of old playbills, posters, photos and flyers that advertised the vaudeville and other entertainment that passed through the Corn Palace over the years.

downtown district features a variety of historic architecture When it comes to interesting and historic architecture, the Corn Palace is not the only show in town. During your visit to

Mitchell, take a stroll through the historic downtown district. You’ll see the Carnegie Resource Center, the former Milwaukee Road train depot, the Art Deco City Hall, sturdy quartzite stone

churches and other buildings from the city’s railroading heyday of the early 20th century.

The former Chicago, Milwaukee, St. Paul & Pacific Railroad – known by almost everybody as The Milwaukee Road – built its Mitchell train station in 1908. Throughout much of its history, the Milwaukee Road aggressively marketed its passenger rail service. That explains why the company spent $40,000 (a lot of money in 1908) on this brick-and-stone depot building.

In 1990, long after passenger rail service ended, the building was restored and today houses the Mitchell Depot Pub & Grill. Where the passenger boarding platform once stood, there is a sunny deck where patrons can sip drinks and watch the freight trains rattle through just a few yards away.

South Dakota careers and resources for out-of-state residents.

DakotaRoots.com offers the state’s largest job search database with thousands of opportunities available. Visit today to forward your career and return to a lifestyle you can truly be at home with.

Mitchell was established in 1880 by the Milwaukee Road – the city is named for Alexander Mitchell, the railroad’s president at the time – and grew into a booming trade center for those homesteading the rich farmlands of eastern South Dakota.

Like many Western boomtowns, Mitchell was made up mostly of wood-frame buildings, according to local historian and business owner Jeff Logan. Sometime after the new train station was built, residents started constructing more permanent brick and stone buildings. Logan said the downtown building boom extended from 1910 to 1929, and many of the most elaborate downtown buildings date back to that era.

Other significant architecture in downtown Mitchell:

City Hall, 612 N. Main St. The Corn Palace’s next-door neighbor bears many of the features of the classic Art Deco style. Originally built as a National Guard Armory, it has been repurposed over the years without losing its architectural soul.

The Realty Building, 300 N. Main St. Constructed in 1921, the designers of this building wanted to scale back its visual presence so it wouldn’t overwhelm the east side of Main Street. They designed the third floor to look like a series of separate structures. As a bonus, the design allowed for side winds to improve ventilation for the third-floor apartments.

Western Bank Building, 223 N. Main St. A four-story structure with a broad cornice was designed in the style of well-known Chicago architect Louis Sullivan.

Mitchell National Bank Building, 217 N. Main St. Right next door to the Western Bank Building, this former bank building, with its iconic columns, was built in 1907 in

the neoclassical revival style. This style was popular at the time for bank and government buildings because the style conveyed a sense

of permanence and stability.

Medical Arts Building, 205 N. Main St. This stately three-story building is one of the few privately owned buildings in South Dakota built in the art deco style.

Branson Bank Building, 110 E. Second Ave. This building was built in 1916 and designed by noted Prairie School architects Purcell and Elmslie of Minneapolis. Frank Lloyd Wright himself visited this building. The terra cotta decoration above the door contains Mitchell’s only gargoyles. In addition, this building features an 8-foot by 36-foot stained glass window transom.

The Mitchell community has an enviable challenge – finding workers to meet its expanding employment market. If you’re looking for a good job in a great community, there’s a place for you in Mitchell.

“There are a lot of opportunities for families and companies of all sizes,” said Bryan Hisel, executive director of the Mitchell Area Development Corporation. “We have great schools for students of all ages, and great jobs for everyone.”

The educational opportunities in Mitchell include award-winning elementary schools, a high school that consistently beats state and national benchmarks, career-ready technical degrees, liberal arts Bachelor degrees, and Masters programs. Students then graduate into a booming local economy with hundreds of available jobs.

The Mitchell economy is made up of large variety of businesses and industries. These companies range from industry-leading communications technology developers to manufacturing firms.

Some of the reasons for Mitchell’s economic boom:

Education – The Mitchell Technical Institute offers programs in energy, communications, power sports, construction & manufacturing, agriculture, business and health science. Dakota Wesleyan University, a four-year, private university, offers degrees in sciences, business, education, the arts and social sciences. Additionally, there are opportunities for education assistance with some employers who offer continuing education programs for workers who want to advance their education and job skills.

Lifestyle – With a population approaching 16,000 serving a trade area of 50,000, Mitchell balances the best of city amenities without the headaches of traffic, high crime, or high cost of living often found in urban centers.

The city affords residents outdoor recreational opportunities including hunting, fishing and lake activities. Cabela’s, the nationally known outdoors outfitter, built one of its largest retail stores in Mitchell. Schools are good, crime is

low, and Mitchell still has that small-town feel where children and families thrive.

Diverse Economy – Mitchell is not a one-company town or even a one-industry town. The area has 11,000 jobs spread among a variety of manufacturing, construction, medical services, retail, tourism, information technology and agriculture industries.

Sustainability – Many of the employers in Mitchell are home-grown companies that started small and expanded. These companies are deeply rooted in the community, and have no plans to move their headquarters or outsource their production to other communities or far-flung destinations.

Everything you need to get started with a new career is located on our amazing new campus at Mitchell Technical Institute (MTI). Our nationally and regionally unique programs will prepare you for the lifestyle you are looking for. MTI’s varied programs and divisions will allow you to explore your options, and you’ll learn about today’s hottest occupations. In two years or less, you’ll be living your dream in a career suited just for you.

Check out the programs offered in these six exciting career divisions and find out why the best jobs start here!

Mitchell may be known for the one and only Corn Palace, the Pepsi-Cola Soccer Complex, and Cadwell Sports Complex where softball, baseball and soccer can all be played, but many visitors may not know about the other great outdoor recreations available in town.

Take the family out for a splashing good time at the Mitchell Aquatic Center. Swim laps in the 50-meter 6-lane competition pool or try out the double slide that runs over 100 feet. This waterpark has something for the whole family with a kid-friendly zero-depth entry, slides, a water walk, dump buckets and sprayers.

Ride through town on the Dry Run Creek Bike & Walking Path or on the scenic bypass past Cadwell Sports Complex. Just a few blocks over you’ll find Lake Mitchell, where you can ride or hike on single-track trails, relax on the public beach or use the group facilities and playgrounds. You can easily enjoy the natural beauty Mitchell has to offer.

Bring your clubs and take your shot at the engaging Lakeview Golf Course overlooking Lake Mitchell. Or try your swing at Wild Oak

The world’s largest cross-country air race begins at the Mitchell Municipal Airport the weekend of July 26 and 27. It’s called the Experimental Aircraft Association AirVenture Cup Race, an annual trek to the EAA Airventure Fly-In Convention in Oshkosh, Wisconsin. More than 50 different experimental aircrafts will depart Sunday, July 27 to begin the daylong race to Wausau Downtown Airport, 70 miles from Oshkosh.

The day before the race, on Saturday, July 26, Mitchell Municipal Airport and Wright Brothers Aviation open the doors to the public from 9 am to 5 pm. Visitors can see the aircraft, talk to the pilots, see classic cars and learn more about experimental aircraft. Pilots also put on the Young Eagles Day, where kids

ages 8 to 17 can take a ride in an airplane for free. Weather permitting, there will also be hot-air balloon rides.

The Young Eagle rides have been especially popular, said Todd Shannon of Wright Brothers Aviation. The last time the race started in Mitchell, pilots gave 260 rides to young people during the open house. “It’s really gratifying for the pilots, and the kids love it. For many of them, it’s the first time they’ve been in an airplane,” he said.

The public is also welcome to return Sunday morning to watch the start of the race, which is scheduled to begin at 9:30 am.

This is the fourth year that the AirVenture Cup starts in Mitchell. Founded in 1998, the AirVenture Cup Race has become one of the most successful racing events in aviation. Pilots of every background come together for the AirVenture Cup Race.

Get Charged Up!The Mitchell Tesla Charging Station right off Interstate 90 was the first electric “supercharger” station in South Dakota, which makes it especially electrifying.

Tesla is a California-based electric car maker that plans to have charging stations in 98 percent of the United States, so that its electric cars can travel from coast to coast. That’s why six charging stations equipped for Tesla Model S cars are located on Havens Avenue, between the County Fair Food Store and Dairy Queen in Mitchell.

The charging stations are specifically made for the Tesla Model S electric sedan, and the charge is free. In Mitchell and elsewhere, the stations are strategically stationed in places where people can shop and eat while their car charges.

Twenty to thirty minutes of charge will get three hours of travel, just about enough to make it to the next charging station in Rapid City to the west or Sioux Falls to the east.

The plains of eastern South Dakota are home to one of the richest ringneck pheasant populations in North America. Bird hunters from across the United States flock to the Mitchell area for pheasant hunting. Guided and youth hunts make Mitchell a great place for a yearly hunt.

Our nation’s first president should be thanked for making South Dakota one of the top pheasant harvest states. George Washington is credited with being the first to bring pheasants to the United States. Although the ringneck pheasant was not successfully released into South Dakota until 1908, the current population is now around 10 million birds.

“South Dakota is renowned worldwide for its pheasant hunting, and rightfully so,” says South Dakota Game, Fish and Parks. “Only twice in the past 20 years has the annual pheasant harvest been under 1 million roosters, and those “down” years of 1992 and 1997 were both over 900,000”.

Resident and nonresident small game licenses can be purchased online with a credit card or from a local licensed outlet. South Dakota residents need an annual small game, one-day small game, youth small game, combination or junior combination license to hunt pheasants. Nonresident adults need a South Dakota nonresident small-game license.

Locally owned sporting good stores such as K & B Archery and Leader Sporting Goods are year-round businesses that cater to hunting, archery, and fishing enthusiasts. Additional outdoors-oriented businesses like Precision Reloading, Lucid Manufacturing and Boyds’ Gunstock Industries also call Mitchell home.

Outdoors outfitter Cabela’s chose Mitchell in 2000 as one of its first retail stores outside its Sidney, Neb., headquarters. The 80,000-square-foot facility is part retail store, part wildlife museum and part tourist attraction. The aquarium -- in the fishing tackle section, naturally -- features living lunkers such as trout, walleye and other fish that can be found in nearby waters. Against the soaring back wall is a “mountain” teeming with a wide variety of realistic animal mounts, from bighorn sheep and mountain goats to mountain lions, bears, moose and elk.

And there’s a reason those animal mounts look so realistic: Hellman’s Taxidermy, also located in Mitchell. The renowned taxidermy shop has created pieces for Cabela’s and other clients featuring everything from North American trophies to exotic animals from Asia and Africa.

Pheasant hunting not for you? Fishing has become one of the most popular outdoor activities in America and is enjoyed year round in Mitchell. Just outside Mitchell, the James River and Lake Mitchell offer great fishing for crappie, bluegill and bass.

In addition to over 1,000 hotel rooms in the Mitchell area, it’s easy to find a relaxing hunting lodge or bed & breakfast to meet your needs after a long hunt. When you’re ready to come inside, enjoy a meal at one of our local restaurants. Mitchell also houses sports bars, coffee shops and retail stores.

Be sure to contact the Mitchell Convention & Visitor’s Bureau to help plan your outdoor escape.

Corn Palace StampedeThe 44th Annual Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo comes to the Horseman’s Sports Arena July 17 to 20. The action also takes place downtown, with the Corn Palace Stampede Rodeo Parade on Main Street.

This is a classic Western sporting event with bull riders, team roping, saddle bronc, bareback riding, tie-down roping, steer wrestling and barrel racing. For kids there’s the Candy Scramble and Mutton Bustin’ – youngsters trying to stay on the backs of fast-running sheep. It’s as entertaining for parents as it is for the young riders.

A free dinner and mixer kicks off Rodeo week, and other events include a chili cookoff, cowboy church service and a golf tournament. Stampede Family Fun Day includes pony rides, tethered balloon rides, inflatables, wagon rides and games.

General admission tickets are $13 ($14 at the door) for adults, $7 for children age 4 to 12 and free to kids 3 and under. Reserved seating tickets are $17.

Miller Lite Bull BashOn Aug. 20, the Miller Lite Bull Bash concentrates on the most action-packed rodeo event of all – bull riding. More than 40 competitors will take their turn trying to stay atop a one-ton animal that is surprisingly agile. For a bull rider, an 8-second ride can

seem like an eternity – if they can stay on for 8 seconds.

The Miller Lite Bull Bash also features the Kids Candy Scramble and Mutton Bustin’ for kids ages 4-7, under 60 pounds. Gates open at 6 pm, show begins promptly at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $10 for adults ($9 in advance) and $5 for children.

Wilbur-Ellis Corn Palace Challenge On Oct. 3 and 4, the sport of rodeo goes indoors. The Wilbur-Ellis Corn Palace Challenge features three performances inside the World’s Only Corn Palace Arena. The top riders from the Championship Bull Riding circuit and the top PRCA bronc riders will be on hand.

With indoor rodeo, there’s no such thing as a bad seat. Spectators get an up-close view of the arena action – but not too up-close.

The Friday bull-riding event begins at 7:30 pm. On Saturday at 1:30 pm the bronc riders take to the arena. The top riders in both events return to the Corn Palace at 7:30 pm. Saturday for the championships. Tickets range from $25 to $35.
