TODAY’S READINGS

First Reading — Turn to the LORD who is generous in forgiving (Isaiah 55:6-9).

Psalm — The Lord is near to all who call upon him (Psalm 145).

Second Reading — Live your lives in a way worthy of the gospel of Christ (Philippians 1:20c-24, 27a).

Gospel — The last will be first, and the first will be last (Matthew 20:1-16a).

DIRECTION Isaiah tells us something that we already know, and yet seem to forget every now and then. He tells us, essentially, that God is God and we are not. When we’re confused and troubled and can’t figure everything out, it might be wise to recall Isaiah speaking on the Lord’s behalf and explain-ing that God—who is on a much more, well, Godly wavelength than we are—moves in ways we can’t even imagine. Saint Paul, by comparison, has everything figured out. Kind of. At least he understands his calling in life—to magnify Christ in everything he does. That should give all of us the direction we need. Jesus gives us di-rection, too, explaining to us once again in the parable of the workers in the vineyard that the last will be first, and the first, last. Copyright © J. S. Paluch

Receiving Holy Communion Outdoors –We ask that you remove or lower your facial covering just before stepping up to the Communion station. Receive the Host in your hands, step aside and consume the Host immediately and replace your mask as you move on. (This will avoid struggling with your mask while holding the Blessed Sacrament in your other hand). For those who have difficulty walking, we encourage you to remain seated at your place during Communion and a priest or Eucharistic Minister will bring the Eucharist to you at the conclusion of the distribu-tion of Communion. (Try to sit as close to the front of the seating area as possible.) We are happy that you are able to attend Mass and want to be as helpful as possible.

UP-TO-DATE INFORMATION For information about COVID-19,

please visit: www.cdc.gov or Www.oronavirus-sd.com or

Please pray for all those affected by the Coronavirus—Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you. Not as the world gives do I give it to you. Do not let your hearts be troubled or afraid. —John 14:27

CARE FOR CREATION…"In the beginning, when God created the heavens and the earth,… God looked at every-thing He had made, and found it very good.” (Genesis 1:1, 31)

A prayer from Pope Francis: “All powerful God, You are present in the whole universe and in the smallest of your creatures. You embrace with your tenderness all that exists. Pour out upon us the

power of your love, that we may protect life and beauty. Fill us with peace, that we may live as brothers and sisters, harming no one. Oh God of the poor, help us to rescue the abandoned and forgotten of the earth, so precious in your eyes. Bring healing to our lives, that we may sow beauty, not pollution and destruction. Touch the hearts of those who look only for gain at the expense of the poor and the earth. Teach us to discover the worth of each thing, to be filled with awe and contempla-tion, to recognize that we are profoundly united with every creature as we journey towards your infinite light. We thank you for being with us each day. Encourage us, we pray, in our struggle for justice, love and peace.” Laudato Si (178)

Dear Parishioners and Mission Friends, This weekend we resumed celebrating the Sacrament of Reconciliation on Saturday afternoons from 4:00-5:00pm at Saint Francis Chapel. Private confessions are still available by appointment. While many are in the custom of receiving this Sacrament once or twice a year, we would like to bring the following videos to your attention as a way of learning more about this important Sacrament. These titles can be found on YouTube.com:

1. Making a good Confession 2. 5 Steps to a Good Confession 3. Making a good Confession (Examining your Conscience) 4. Tips for Making a Good Confession 5. Confessing the same sins over and over again

There are several other videos available that will be listed on the sidebar that you may find helpful and of interest. Recall that in the Spring we had a one-time opportunity to receive General Absolution. For those who were present, all prior sins were forgiven just as if you receive individual confession and need not be confessed again. We encourage your reception to this Sacrament to be sincere and intentional and not simply a repetitious weekly ritual. The Peniten-tial Rite at every Mass is a significant moment in the Liturgy as we receive God’s mercy and the forgiveness for our sins. Sacramental confession is neces-sary ONLY in the case of serious sin.

Noon Mass to resume Sunday, September 27, in the Mission Courtyard We are pleased to see the growing attendance at weekend Masses. Thus, we are adding another Mass at 12:00 noon in the Courtyard. The consensus among parish staff and parishioners is that they prefer outside Masses, weather permit-ting. Furthermore, if we were to move indoors, we are limited to 100 in Saint Francis Chapel. All other attendees would have to watch live-stream in the CA room (up to 100) or simply listen from the upper parking lot area. Remaining in the Courtyard seemed to be the better option. We will continue to practice so-cial distancing and we thank you for your spirit of cooperation and patience. We also thank all who assist us every day in executing all that needs to be done.

A Message from our Pastor

Msgr. Steve Callahan will be the Principal celebrant for the concelebrated Funeral Mass for Linda Grosso, wife of Deacon Ernie Grosso, who passed away unexpect-edly September 7. Mass will be at 10am, Friday, October 9, in the Mission Court-yard. Please keep the Grosso family in your prayers.

Make it a Habit. The first weekend of each month provides an opportunity to bring your donations of Food/ Diapers/ Formula /Paper goods for our monthly collection. We provide non-perishable food to our sister parish, Holy Family in Linda Vista. We also support needy expectant mothers and families with young children through Birthline. Birthline is always in need of infant for-mula. Paper goods benefit the Fraternity House that cares for HIV/AIDS patients. This month, all coins left in the collection basket as you leave Mass will benefit Religious Education Scholarships here at Mission San Diego. Thanks for your continuing support.

Volunteering, a good way to stay healthy and active. Mission San Diego has many opportunities. Best ones to start with are the Gift Shop and Docent Program. Call Rhonda (619.281.8449) or Janet (858.560.9312).

An Act of Spiritual Communion

My Jesus, I believe that You are pre-sent in the Most Holy Sacrament.

I love You above all things, and I desire to receive You into my soul. Since I cannot at this moment

receive You sacramentally, come at least spiritually into my heart.

Lord, I know that You have always been there. I embrace You and unite myself wholly to You. Never permit

me to be separated from You. Amen.

SAINT PIUS OF PIETRELCINA (1887-1968) Feast Day—September 23

Did the World War II American flyer really see Padre Pio in midair, preventing the bombing of his village below? Did Pio actually “bilocate” in Italy, the Holy Land, even America, as countless witnesses testified? Or “read hearts” before penitents spoke? What of the stigmata, Christ’s wounds imprinted on Padre Pio’s hands, feet, and side? John Paul II, who as a young man visited Pio, never mentioned these extraordinary elements at the canonization. Instead, the pope spoke of “trials accepted with love,” referring perhaps to sanctions restricting Pio’s faculties for hearing confessions and celebrating public Mass, imposed because of criticism, later discredited, sent to the Vatican; of Pio’s offering his sufferings in union with Jesus’ passion for a suffering world; of his continual availability to sinners seeking direction and abso-lution; of Padre Pio’s prayer that blossomed in charity, especially through his House for the Relief of Suffering, a healthcare facility that anticipated by decades today’s holistic partnering of medical science and spirituality. Finally, how comforting for us ordinary Christians, this extraordinary saint’s most frequent advice: “Pray, hope, and don’t worry!” — Peter Scagnelli, Copyright © J. S. Paluch

Many of you have taken live Logos Bible Study courses with Dr. Bill Creasy in the past. Due to COVID-19, his live classes are on hold. But, Dr. Creasy has launched the first of an online series of courses on "St. Paul the Apostle." This first 10-week, 20-lesson course will focus on the Acts of the Apostles, and it will be followed by

in-depth studies of all of St. Paul's epistles and letters. In addi-tion to the video lessons, Dr. Creasy will be scheduling weekly online Zoom "Office Hours," where registered students can discuss the lessons with him and their fellow students, ask questions and share fellowship. Sign up today by going to logosbiblestudy.com, and see "Featured Course."
