STORIES OF HOPE FROM BOISE RESCUE MISSION MINISTRIES | MAY 2016

MY FAMILY IS HOME THANKS TO YOU!

MISSION: RESCUE MAY 20162

On the 1st of May, we celebrated with Akumu and her five children as they were able to move out of City Light Home for Women and Children and into a place of their own. Akumu and her family came to City Light for help about a year ago when she had nowhere else to turn. Their journey away from the violence and economic poverty of the Democratic Republic of the Congo had taken years, and when she arrived in Boise, things were not much easier. She didn’t speak English and she didn’t have a job. She says, “When I came here, we'd spend the night at friends’ houses, but their

homes only fit their family size, so we weren’t able to settle anywhere for long."Akumu went to the Agency for New Americans to seek a long-term solution. She says they helped her understand that, because she had so many children and no work, even if they could help her find a house, she wouldn't be able to pay for it. “That is when my family and I came here to the Rescue Mission. Initially, when we were just moving around, it

was very difficult. I would be walking with my kids in the cold, trying to find a safe place for them. Then we found City Light and they made things so much better." Your generosity provided a safe environment for Akumu and her children. At City Light, she found the support and security she needed to shift her focus away from simply surviving. She found a job, started taking classes to learn English, and was able to take charge of their lives again.Akumu’s most exciting news came last month. We were overjoyed when she told us, "God has blessed us. We have found a home! We'll be moving into a house!"Staff members at City Light tell me that their friendship with Akumu blossomed when they were able to connect her with a Christian translator who spoke Swahili. They tell me, “We found out about her deep love and trust in Jesus. What a blessing it was to spend time praying with her.”Akumu says, "My faith has taught me that, when you don't have strength, God gives you the strength, so I depend on Him.""I'm grateful to the people who give, praying that God would bless everyone who sacrifices to make sure that there's food in this place and that it's running day and night. I thank you and just pray that God will continue to bless you all."

CONNECT WITH US:

Dear Mission Friends,

Summer is rapidly approaching, and I have to tell you, we are very busy! City Light is preparing for our Summer Kid’s Program. The children will have a full day of activities, Monday through Friday, including field trips, arts and crafts, academics and Bible studies. As a result, they return to school in the fall having been fully engaged in learning all summer and occupied with healthy, supervised activities instead of just ‘hanging out’ or wandering the street. Please remember to pray

for the kids, our staff and volunteers as the summer gets underway.

On May 13th, we celebrated this year’s graduates of the New Life Program with our annual graduation ceremony at Ten Mile Christian Church. Fifteen men and women were recognized for their hard work in recovery. We are very proud of their accomplishments and so very thankful for the lives and families God has restored. We are also very proud of the great staff members who have taught, trained, and loved these graduates through the process of recovery and discipleship.

Thank you for your on-going financial support of the Mission and for your prayer! Everything God accomplishes through Boise Rescue Mission Ministries is the result of your caring and sharing with us. If you have never visited our facilities to see firsthand the work you are funding, I hope you can take time this summer to do so. You are welcome to visit any facility any time (during regular business hours), and if you’d like a guide for that visit, let me know. I, or one of our directors, will be happy to meet you and lead the way. What you will see is an extraordinary work of God and His people.

Meanwhile, please continue to pray for the work here. The need is great but our God is faithful! May He bless you and yours this summer.
