MISSION OF THE MONTH: AC / LUTHERAN DIASTER RESPONSE

Direct us, O Lord God, in all our doings with your continual help, that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you, we may glorify your holy name; and finally, by your mercy, bring us to everlasting life, through Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen. -- The Prayer of the Day for September 8, Pentecost 16

Dear St. David’s family and friends,

September is shaping up to be an exciting month for the saints of St. David’s! And what a great opening prayer we just prayed -- to the One whose faithful love is the source, the power, and the destination of our life. It puts first things first: reminds us what we at St. David’s are all about, where we’re going, and Whose power and presence bring value and fruitfulness to all we do!

The Word of God for August 31/September1, Labor Day Weekend, helps us to put first things first. “Do not put yourself forward in the king’s presence, . . . it is better to be told ‘Come up here,’ than to be put lower in the presence of a noble (Proverbs 25:6-7)” Jesus, in the Gospel, interprets that proverb for us all and goes on to tell us who to invite, when we throw dinner parties (or, maybe, cookouts?):“. . . when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind. And you will be blessed, . . . for you will be repaid at the resurrection of the just (Luke 14:13-14).” The continuing reading from Hebrews picks up the same theme: “Do not neglect to show hospitality to strangers, for by doing that some have entertained angels without knowing it (Hebrews 13:2)” Angels? Stay tuned, we’ll hear more about them (us?)

On September 7/8 Moses sets the tone as he speaks the LORD’s word to the Israelites, on the verge of the promised land: “See, I have set before you today life and prosperity, death and adversity. If you obey the commandments of the LORD, . . . by loving the LORD your God, walking in his ways. . . then you shall live and become numerous, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.” (Deuteronomy 30:15-16). First things first. What first things? As we prayed above, “. . . that in all our works, begun, continued, and ended in you; we may glorify your name.” How do we glorify God’s name? By doing everything we do, as though God’s name were on on it – even that Name that is sealed on us: the Name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit. Paul, in the shortest epistle of the New Testament, the Letter to Philemon, Paul asks Philemon to free his runaway slave Onesimos – whom Paul it turns out has met in prison, and now has come to be baptized into that very name into Whom Philemon also was baptized. So, what do you do, when one who is your property becomes your brother? Stay tuned. In the Gospel, Jesus tells a story about a man who begins to build, but does not finish – for he loses sight of the bigger picture, and his intentions wind up bearing no fruit. “Whoever does not carry the cross and follow me cannot be my disciple (Luke 14:27)” Jesus declares. Carry the cross? What’s that? It’s the way Jesus carries through, from start to finish, his ministry of redemption, begun, done, and completed – thereby glorifying (releasing for all the power of ) God’s holy name. Will glorifying God’s name work in your life and mine? Hey, the Lord’s seal is on us! Right?

But Jesus’ mission of seeking and saving the lost is not just for us, it’s for everybody. And on September 15 th

we celebrate it with all the stops pulled out: “This is the day the LORD has made: Let us rejoice and be glad in it!” (Psalm 118:24) That’s the theme of RALLY DAY 2013 – a day with activities, prizes, and blessings for

everybody! The day will begin at 9:00 a.m. with the first instruction session of St. David’s Sunday School downstairs, while us older children will be hearing Jesus’ parables about the joy with which the angels in heaven carry on – every time one who was lost is found! And as we gather at the table of the Lord who receives tax collectors, sinners, and you and me – the Sunday School children will join us in procession, with banners and the exuberance of a simulcast with the angels in heaven – where each of them will be blessed, by Jesus’ called representatives – and then we’ll all be blessed, and join in a parade, led by the children and a few clowns and musicians, to celebrate the festivities that await outside: Food, drinks, games, prizes, face painting, balloons, pony rides, petting zoo, and a visit from Mother Goose, the famous story teller! THIS IS THE DAY THAT THE LORD HAS MADE! LET US REJOICE AND BE GLAD IN IT! Say, that reminds me of a song . . . We’ll hear and sing a few of them, as our St. David’s contemporary music group, Led by the Spirit, join Bethany Porter, our music minister, in leading the praises. What can make that any better? You can, and you will, as you, the St. David’s family, join the fun!

ON THE FOLLOWING SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 22, WE WILL RESUME OUR 9:00 A.M AND 11:00 A.M. WORSHIP SERVICE SCHEDULE, so do remember to mark your calendars. On Saturday and Sunday Jesus tells a story about a dishonest manager, who uses his authority as his master’s steward to “make friends” with potential new employers – as he knows he’s about to be laid off. What does the steward’s master do? He commends the steward – say what? Jesus says: “Make friends for yourselves by means of dishonest wealth so that when it fails, they may welcome you into the eternal homes (Luke 16:9)” And what’s Jesus’ point? “If then you have not been faithful with dishonest wealth, who will entrust you with the true riches?” (Luke 16:11) The steward is commended for knowing how to “look out for Number One.” How blessed are those who look out for the One Who’s really Number One? Stay tuned.

Remember those angels who were rejoicing in God’s presence for every lost one found? On the weekend of September 28/29 we celebrate St. Michael and All Angels (a.k.a. Michaelmas) – and the ministry of angels and mortals (the word angel is the Greek word for messenger). Michael is the archangel who leads up the heavenly hosts, the forces of God as they contend against the cosmic forces of evil. We will hear about him in the lessons appointed for that day, from the Bible’s two apocalyptic books, the Book of Daniel and the Book of Revelation, secret code messages to communities in crisis and persecution, who bring home the good news that the victory will be won, and that reinforcements are on the way – closer to us than we know. How close? In the Gospel we meet up with Jesus, as he meets up with those seventy others he sends out – as he sends us out – to make ready his way. And when they return, with joy (always a whole lot of joy among those angelic messengers, be they angels or mortals, doing the Lord’s bidding), for they have discovered how the authority with which the Lord sends them and us into the world can even drive out demons – just like Jesus. The Lord reminds them – us, too – that the best thing we have to rejoice about: “. . . rejoice that your names are written in heaven (Luke 10:17-20).” Merry Michaelmas!

September promises to be an exciting month, indeed! May the Lord, in whom, through whom, and for whom, all we do is begun, done, and completed be glorified as we live, love, and rejoice in God’s holy Name!

EDUCATION AND YOUTHWill meet over the Summer – need additional teachers for the Fall, there has been good effort to keep the children’s church going after Pastor Hartford left.

EVANGELISMNeed to change mindsets, a committee cannot be the only ones responsible for Evangelism, this will not work! Everyone in the church needs to serve in some capacity- phone calls, face to face communication, problems to be discussed, etc., Evangelism is everyone’s job. Debbie Geris has information on a Christian Jazz Band who can perform for us, will check with the village as to what permits we might need. Concert to be held on July 28th

at 3:30 P.M., need refreshments- water, lemonade, cookies, etc.

SOCIAL MINISTRYThanks for support of the Pancake Breakfast next one to be held on March 14, 2014, CROP Walk on April 27, 2014, 1502 pounds of food collected for “stuff-a-bus”, bring food for LSS supplies are short.

STEWARDSHIPFine-tuning Committee night for the Fall, working on new t-shirts and sweatshirts with church logo. Ordered shirts and sweatshirts- should be here before the July 28th concert, cost is $15 for t-shirt, $30 for sweatshirt, and $45 for zippered sweatshirt. Will advertise upcoming concert in local papers and stores.

WORSHIPTrying to control the length of the service, will try continuous communion during the Summer, First Holy Communion went well, have put ad in Herald asking for Worship Assistants for all services, Have had some negative comments about continuous communion- will try Communion as usual to see if it really saved time changing methods. Discussed reinstituting the Healing Service as we have had in the past.

PRESCHOOLWe will be open for the Fall term, having Summer School for three weeks, have had clothing drive and have scheduled a fundraiser.

SCHOLARSHIPHave had two applications for Scholarship, which will be presented in August, will divide funds equally.

Dear Parents,Have you brought your child to worship lately? Summer is a great time to start a new habit!

Beginning June 16th, we have one Sunday service at 10:00 a.m. (Saturday at 5:30 p.m.) Make Sunday (even once or twice a month) a day to be together in worship. Our service is clearly printed and easy to follow each week. There are special children’s bulletins and “Rainbow Activity Bags” from ushers. Try coming and staying for part of the service if it is too stressful for you at first. Every

new thing can be hard until you get used to it! Doodle Cards in the pew racks have helpful hints for you as well as a place for children to draw on.

Join us on Rally Sunday (September 15th at 9:00 a.m.) for our annual morning of children’s activities and bagels on the lawn, after a special family worship service with simple hymns and a sermon that a child can understand. Remember – if your child doesn’t see that coming to church is important to you, it won’t be important to him or her, either. May you enjoy the blessings God gives you during the summer months!

SEPTEMBER 2013

Welcome back to another church year after an unpredictable summer weather wise. It won’t seem to have been so hot once we move into winter.

Last call for the Metro NY Welca Synod “Gathering” on Sept 21 at St John’s , Poughkeepsie. NY. This is our annual gathering and we move it up and down from year to year. Last year it was on LI.

As always Joyce Anderson presented a wonderful Bible Study at our annual WELCA picnic at Cedar Creek Park on July 24th. She combined all three lessons from the two summer issues of Gather. All three covered the three accounts of Jesus feeding the 5,000 from Matthew, Mark and Luke’s Gospels. Even though the disciples did not have “enough” Jesus gave the command, “feed the people.” Each story was preceded by the story of John the Baptist from Herod’s telling. Herod was afraid that Jesus was John coming back to deal with him for beheading him. Jesus wanted time to himself to mourn John’s death but no one would leave him alone. They followed him everywhere. So in keeping with the theme- do we have enough? we discussed how we feed the people today who need bread. What was formerly called food stamps is now called SNAP. The Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, which provides food assistance to nearly 1.8 million is run by the states and each state decides from their cost of living how much a person is entitled to. We went shopping with a weeks worth of SNAP. With a slip of paper worth $40.00 we filed around the tables seeing how much food we could afford for a week. There are great challenges in being on a weekly income. Hard to shop for sales and in bulk. We also mentioned all the people and groups who feed our hungry here on LI. We then broke for our “pot luck” lunch- which was delicious and enough. To add to the day the weather was beautiful. Our offerings are shared between national welca and a deserving group here on LI.

When the Welca Bible study resumes in September St David’s will host the December Meeting. You will find the schedule in this Herald.

Flower delivery is as follows: Naomi Circle has September and Martha circle has October. Thanks, Ladies.

See you in Church!

ATTENTION ALL CAREGIVERS!!

There is a program for caregivers that originated with a church in Syosset and now has chapters all over Long Island including the one sponsored by the combined Massapequa churches.

“Caring for the Caregiver” meets at the Massapequa Reformed Church on Merrick Road on the first and third Tuesday of the month at 2:00 PM in the library across from the church office in back of the fellowship hall.

There is a small core group who have been with us since the beginning more than a year ago and others come and join us on and off as they feel the need.

The concept is simple. Care giving is a lonely situation and only others who have experienced the same thing can appreciate what you are going through. There are certain characteristics that apply to all but many think they must be the only one in such a place. That is where this group comes in. We all get a chance to tell our story and to hear what is going on with one another. Sometimes we learn some useful piece of information that can benefit our situation as well. Other times we just get a chance to feel the caring of others in a similar position.

St. David’s is one of the sponsors of this group and I am one of the facilitators. I know we have many people at St. David’s who are in this situation and can surely use the companionship of some of these wonderful people who live daily with this challenge.

So please, give us a chance and avail yourself of this opportunity to give yourself a break and learn some new coping mechanisms for the challenging work you are doing.

In Christ,Deacon Florence Poeschke

THE CHRISTIAN CORNER

Noah's Ark

In the year 2013, the Lord came unto Noah, Who was now living in America and said:"Once again, the earth has become wicked and over-populated, and I see the end of all flesh before me.""Build another Ark and save 2 of every living thing along with a few good humans."

He gave Noah the blueprints, saying:"You have 6 months to build the Ark before I will start the unending rain for 40 days and 40 nights."

Six months later, the Lord looked down and saw Noah weeping in his yard - but no Ark."Noah!," He roared, "I'm about to start the rain! Where is the Ark?"

"Forgive me, Lord," begged Noah, "but things have changed.""I needed a Building Permit.""I've been arguing with the Boat Inspector about the need for a sprinkler system."

"My homeowners association claim that I've violated theNeighborhood by-laws by building the Ark in my back yard and exceeding the height limitations. We had to go to the local Planning Committee for a decision."

"Then the City Council and the Electricity Company demanded a shed load of money for the future costs of moving power lines and other overhead obstructions, to clear the passage for the Ark's move to the sea. I

told them that the sea would be coming to us, but they would hear none of it."

"Getting the wood was another problem. There's a ban on cutting local trees in order to save the Greater Spotted Barn Owl.""I tried to convince the environmentalists that I needed the wood to save the owls - but no go!"

"When I started gathering the animals, PETA took me to court. They insisted that I was confining wild animals against their will. They argued the accommodations were too restrictive and it was cruel and inhumane to put so many animals in a confined space."

"Then the Environmental Protection Agency ruled that I couldn't build the Ark until they'd conducted an environmental impact study on Your proposed flood."

"I'm still trying to resolve a complaint with the Human Rights Commission on how many minorities I'm supposed to hire for my building crew."

"The Immigration Dept. Is checking the visa status of most of the people who want to work.""The labor unions say I can't use my sons. They insist I have to hire only union workers with ark-building experience."

"To make matters worse, the IRS seized all my assets, claiming I'm trying to leave the country illegally with endangered species.""So, forgive me, Lord, but it would take at least 10 years for me to finish this ark."

"Suddenly the skies cleared, the sun began to shine and a rainbow stretched across the sky."

Noah looked up in wonder and asked, "You mean you're not going to destroy the world?"

"No," said the Lord. " The Government beat me to it."

When I was a kid, my Grandma liked to make breakfast food for dinner every now and then. And I remember one night in particular when she had made breakfast after a long, hard day. On that evening so long ago, she had placed a plate of eggs, sausage and extremely burned biscuits in front of my Granddad. I remember waiting to see if anyone noticed!

Yet all my Granddad did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my Grandma and ask me how my day was at school. I don't remember what I told him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly on that ugly burned biscuit. He ate every bite of that thing... never made a face nor uttered a word about it!

When I got up from the table that evening, I remember hearing my Grandma apologize to my Granddad for burning the biscuits. And I'll never forget what he said: "Honey, I love burned biscuits every now and then."

Later that night, I went to kiss Gran daddy good night and I asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped me in his arms and said, "Your Grandma put in a hard day of work today and she's real tired. And besides - a little burned biscuit never hurt anyone!"

As I've grown older, I've thought about that many times. Life is full of imperfect things and imperfect people. I'm not the best at anything, and I forget birthdays and anniversaries just like everyone else. But what I've learned over the years is that learning to accept each other's faults, and choosing to celebrate each other’s differences, is one of the most important keys to creating a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.

And that's my prayer for you today... that you will learn to take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He's the only One who will be able to give you a relationship where a burnt biscuit isn't a deal-breaker!

We could extend this to any relationship. In fact, understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!

So, please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burned one will do just fine.

And PLEASE pass this along to someone who has enriched your life. Be kinder than necessary because everyone you meet is fighting some kind of battle.

A man was walking along the beach, and God said,”Son, you’ve been so faithful. I want to grant you one wish.”

The man said, “God, I want to go to Hawaii, but I’m afraid to fly. Please build me a bridge across the ocean.”

God said, “Son, that is totally impossible. Think of the logistics of that. Now take some time and wish again,” He said.

“Ok, Lord. I’ve been divorced four times. My ex-wives all say I’m so insensitive. So my wish is that I might be able to understand a woman. I want to know how to make her truly happy,” replied the man.

There was a long pause, and God said, “Do you want two lanes or four lanes on that bridge?”

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month:

Our annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk will be held at Jones Beach on October 20, 2013.

Making Strides Against Breast Cancer is the largest network of breast cancer awareness events in the nation,

uniting nearly 300 communities to finish the fight. Every breast cancer walk and event is an incredible and inspiring

opportunity to honor those who have battled breast cancer, raise awareness about what we can do to reduce our

breast cancer risk, and raise money to help the American Cancer Society fight the disease with research,

information and services, and access to mammograms for women who need them.

To Participate on St. David’s Lutheran Church Team see or call Sue Wurthmann 516-554-6765 or to donate on-line
