We admit we are hesitant to walk to Jerusalem and beyond with you, God of Glory. In a world where we worry about tomorrow before enjoying today, we race by your moments of silence, of learning. In that flood of worries, which can overwhelm us, we may miss that assurance that you have not cut us off from your grace. In the deserts of our desires, we may ignore that feast of hope, of joy, of life you offer to us. Forgive us and have mercy on us, Gentle Guardian of our souls. In humility, may we offer our lives to others. In love, may we share your grace with everyone we meet. In hope, may we wait for you all our days, as you come to us in the life and joy of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. (silence for personal confession) —Moira Laidlaw’s Liturgies

Next Week:

We continue our study of the Miracles of Jesus.

We encourage you to take time this week to open up your Bible and pray, read or meditate through the following suggested readings. As one family, let us dive deeper into our relationship with Christ as we journey through the miracles of Jesus together.

The Healing at the Pool: John 5:1-15

AFFIRMATION OF FAITH We believe that our lives are held within the encircling love of God, who knows our names and recognizes our deepest needs. We believe that Christ is the divine Child of the living God, and that his grace is like living waters that can never be exhausted. We believe in the birthing, renewing, enabling Spirit of God who yearns over our welfare as a mother yearns for her child. We believe that God is in the arid desert as well as in green pastures, and that hard times and disciplines are also loving gifts. We believe that our journey has a purpose and a destination, and that our path leads to a human glory we cannot yet imagine. We believe that in the church we are fellow pilgrims on the road, and that we are called to love one another as God loves us. This is our faith and we are humbled to profess in Jesus the Christ. Amen — from Traveling to Easter with Jesus as our Guide

Our prayer ministry can help by praying for a special child each month. This month we are praying for 16 year old Kaylen. Kaylen loves to play basketball and would like to play on a college team someday. She is very athletic. She is self-taught on the piano, knows how to read music, and can play the drums. HUME Summer Camp

2018

What makes summer better?

SUMMER CAMP! This year’s theme is Kujua, which means “To Know.” The goal is to know God’s love for you. The most well known verse in the Bible is John 3:16, “For God so loved the world, that He gave His only Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.” This summer at Hume, we will focus on God’s redemptive plan throughout the grand narrative of Scripture as He rescues His people from the curse of sin, and will one day restore all things. Our hope is that as we seek to know God more, our love for Him will grow, which will result in a life fully surrendered to Him.

Sign ups start March 1

Middle School meets Wednesday nights 6:15-7:30pm (optional dinner at 5:45) Starting on February 21st, Middle School Life Groups will begin the Alpha study (youth version). This will take us back to the basics of faith. Youth 6th - 8th grade are invited to join us!

High School Life Groups meet Sundays from 6:30-8pm and Wednesdays from 6:15-7:30pm (with an optional dinner at 5:45pm) Starting the week of February 18th, our High School Life Groups will begin the Alpha study (youth version). This will take us back to the basics of faith. Youth 9th - 12th grade are invited to join us!

Over the last two weeks, Sunday School children received Fish Banks in which to collect offerings for One Great Hour

of Sharing. A gift to OGHS enables the church to share God’s love with our neighbors in need around the world by providing relief to those affected by natural disasters, providing food to the hungry, and helping to empower the poor and oppressed. We hope that parents will take the time to log onto the PCUSA Special Offerings website and explore the interactive features with your children, as well as talking to your children about people in need throughout the world.

News & Announcements

What is Per Capita? Per Capita is an amount of money, for each member (this year, $26), that our congregation

shares with our larger Presbyterian Church, USA. Presbyterians believe we discern best what God is calling us to do

when we gather together, “seek[ing] … to find and represent the will of Christ” (Book of Order, F-3.0204).

Per capita funding is how we mutually share the costs of coming together to discern the Spirit’s leading for the

future.

For example, the funding provides for the cost of bringing together:

commissioners and advisory delegates to the General Assembly (GA) (as well as the cost of planning and holding

the meeting)

church leaders from presbyteries and synods for training events

necessary tools to develop and administer ordination exams to seminarians preparing to become future pastors

those who are elected by the GA to serve on permanent GA committees (as well as each committee’s work), such

as the GA Nominating Committee and the GA Committee on Representation

Please prayerfully consider adding a Per Capita amount to your 2018 Giving.

If you would like to announce the birth or adoption of a baby by placing a rose on the altar table, please call Julie Thompson, ext 115. She will take the necessary information for the bulletin. For placement in the bulletin, the office needs to be notified by 4:00 p.m. on the prior Tuesday. Thank you.

Pastor Nominating Committee (PNC) Update – February 18, 2018 We’ve reached a major milestone – our Ministry Information Form (MIF) has been completed and has been approved by both our Session and the Detroit Presbytery Committee on Ministry! The MIF will now be entered into the PC(USA) Church Leadership Connection (CLC) System. The CLC will make our opening visible to potential candidates as well as providing us with Personal Information Forms (or PIFs) of candidates that most closely match our MIF criteria. We are now preparing ourselves for when these matches occur. Activities include: Expanding website content that will provide a welcome and additional information for minister candidates to reference; Training and organization to accommodate the significant number of PIFs that we anticipate receiving and will need to

evaluate; and Developing a better understanding of how to handle candidate communication ranging from email confirmation of PIF

receipt to group interview processes. We fully expect to be ‘knee-deep’ in resumes at the time of our March update! God continually blesses us with his presence and guidance. We are so thankful for the ‘fresh eyes’ review of our MIF by the Session, the lessons shared by Debbie Lennis, the support of our church staff, and the words of encouragement and prayers from the entire congregation. Thank you, Kathy Bernard Kurt Boeve James Davidson Sandy Dodge Kiki Farrow Paula Ford Steve Marulis Dana Stonerook Tom Weaver

The Reverend Linda Cochran We have been blessed to have Pastor Cochran share in the ministry of FPCP for the past year. Linda's contract with the Church will conclude on April 15, 2018. Due to Session budget restrictions, they were unable to extend the contract beyond this date. We will miss Linda and her dedication to and faith in Jesus Christ. We wish her continued blessings in her ministry, and know her next flock will be truly enriched by her love for God.

Spring

Did you know there are only three churches designated by PC (USA) as an Earth Care Congregation in the entire state of Michigan?

Those churches are First Presbyterian Church Tecumseh, Kalamazoo First Presbyterian Church and First Presbyterian Church of Plymouth. The Partners in Earth Care team at FPCP has worked hard to attain and maintain this designation. At our meeting on Tuesday, February 27th, at 7:00 p.m. we will have the opportunity to learn what First Presbyterian Church Tecumseh is doing as an Earth Care Congregation when Andy King visits our church. Many of you know/remember Andy from when he and his wife, Cathi, were members of our church. We invite all members of our church to come to this open meeting in the Hearth Room to meet with Andy and hear what earth care activities Tecumseh church is involved in. Hope to see you there!!!

FPCP Partners in Earth Care

Plastic Bag Recycling Did you know that plastic handled bags, Ziploc bags as well as trash bags are

recyclable in the City of Plymouth? The solid waste department of the City of Plymouth has told us that clean plastic handled bags, including Ziploc and garbage bags, are recyclable. They also shared that when deposited singly into the curbside bins they tend to blow off the conveyor belts when they reach the processing facility. It was recommended that any loose bags, including garbage bags, be tucked inside each other, creating a ‘bag of bags’. Other items should not be inside the bags. Loose bags clog the machinery and that is why some communities have stopped accepting plastic bags. These communities DO NOT recycle plastic bags: Plymouth Twp., Northville Twp., City of Northville and Canton. The City of Livonia does accept plastic bags. If your community does not accept plastic bags for recycling, please bring them to church and place them in the collection bin in the lower level. The Willing Hands Circle will use these bags to crochet “Plarn Mats” for the homeless (see the FPCP Partners in Earth Care bulletin board for more information).

Presbyterian Women

Willing Hands learned how to make plastic mats for the homeless to sleep on.

We will meet again on February 21st for this ongoing project. It is a creative and fun way to serve God’s people. Here are ways you can support this mission: Drop off plastic shopping bags in the bin in the basement collection area Cut and tie plastic bag strips into balls of ‘plarn’ Crochet the strips into mats PRAY for this mission Contact Linda Luke at 734-812-4516 or Bev MacGaw at 734-453-7224 with questions. This project is open to women of all ages and skill levels.

Be sure to stop by the FPCP Presbyterians for Earth Care bulletin board to offer your suggestion on how we can better care for our

earth, our community, our church and our fellow members. Based on one congregant’s suggestion, starting in March, we will start collecting and recycling ink cartridges (personal size only) on the first Sunday each month. Help us to better serve our church community!

The Lent 2018 Daily Reflection / Action Calendar, “Tread Lightly for Lent,” is now available. The calendar was created by the “Presbyterian Hunger Program’s Environmental Ministries” and “Enough for Everyone” offices at PC (USA). In Lent, we reflect on Christ’s ministry, death, and resurrection. We slow down, take time, and examine our internal spiritual lives and the way we live out our Christian faith in the world around. This Lenten calendar begins with ways to prepare ourselves for the Lent and Easter season and then moves to weekly focus of women, creation, water, consumption, and social justice. Copies of the calendar are available on the FPCP Partners in Earth Care bulletin board or online at www.presbyterianmission.org/resource/tread-lightly-lent-2018/
