After several successful performances of this rarely played sacred work in various cities, the Chorus and Orchestra of the Accademia di Santa Cecilia of Rome wind up their Rossini project with a performance at the Salzburg Festival, their first-ever guest appearance there. Anna Netrebko, whose aria 'Inflammatus' was for many the concert’s 'unspoken high point' (Die Presse), succeeded in 'blending her voice beautifully into the soloist ensemble – one voice among equals in an excellent, well-balanced quartet' (Salzburger Nachrichten). Thanks to various 'phantasmagorical' tricks, Livermore creates an enchanting atmosphere that is musically rendered by the Orchestra Sinfonica Rossini under Corrado Rovaris. Content: Richard Strauss completed his second-to-last opera 'Die Liebe der Danae' in 1940. Written under war clouds, the 'merry mythology' based on an idea by Hugo von Hofmannsthal was given a provisional, by-invitation-only dress-rehearsal premiere at the 1944 Salzburg Festival the day before all theaters in the 'Reich' were closed by order of the Ministry of Propaganda. The official world premiere took place at the 1952 Salzburg Festival – now no longer in the presence of the composer, who passed away in 1949. This timeless production from the Deutsche Oper Berlin can also be seen as the mirror of a changing world order, with a wonderfully suggestive symbol dominating the stage during all three acts: a grand piano suspended upside-down from the rafters. Starring Manuela Uhl, Mark Delavan and Matthias Klink in the lead roles, this production does full justice to this rarely performed but exceptionally moving work.

'The philosophical conception is expressed in few words: Everything that is dark and shameful will perish; everything that is beautiful will triumph.' This 'triumph,' though, is restrained. The Eighth is a large-scale work that ends in something like a pastoral mood, played pianissimo; poses of jubilation were not in Shostakovich’s nature. Meanwhile, the concert opens with Wagner for non-Wagnerians: namely, the delightful, lively Overture to 'Rienzi.' And the 'Dance of the Seven Veils' from 'Salome' shows the fin-de-siècle’s enigmatic penchant for decadence.

Once again the lights have gone out in the 'Salle des fêtes', a kind of open garage where the orchestra practises. But for its members this is no reason to stop rehearsing. Most of them know their parts by heart. Small lapses of memory are compensated for by a talent for improvisation and the grace of God.

With the happy song 'Good Tradition', she was able to prove that she also knows how to deliver up-tempo beats, but people were always looking for a sombre, slightly melancholy mood. Beautiful music for a cosy autumn evening, songs with a touch of folk which sometimes drift over into the blues: This is the other Tanita Takaram who has continued quietly on her way, far away from the charts. Title:KT Tunstall plays Avo Session

Content: The performance of the Scottish singer/songwriter KT Tunstall is no less artistically ambitious. Her song ‘Suddenly I See’ catapulted her onto the international charts. It’s a catchy song that does not completely reveal the fact that a superb musician is hiding behind the quirky initials KT, which stands for her full first name: Kate Victoria. She appeared in small student clubs in London as ‘Katie’ until she was invited to appear on the Late-Night-Show with Jools Holland – another familiar name at the AVO SESSION Basel. With only a guitar and a few stomp boxes like a loop station that allowed her to become her own live backup band, she sang the song ‘Black Horse and the Cherry Tree’. It was her big break. She got a recording contract and a little later, her debut single, ‘Eye to the Telescope’ was released and made it up to number 3 on the British charts. She was awarded the prize for British Female Solo Artist at the Brit Awards in 2006. And now at the AVO SESSION Basel, we experience another great solo performance by this one of a kind artist.

Content: The film documents the world premiere of Frank Zappa's composition for the orchestra 'The Yellow Shark', that took place at the Alte Oper in Frankfurt/Main in 1992, and Zappa's last performance on stage. Zappa himself directed the performance joined by members of the multi-awarded Ensemble Moderne. 'The Yellow Shark' was also the last album Zappa released before his death. Tom Waits has listed it as one of his favourite albums, commenting: 'The ensemble is awe-inspiring. It is a rich pageant of texture in colour. It's the clarity of his perfect madness, and mastery. Frank governs with Elmore James on his left and Stravinsky on his right. Frank reigns and rules with the strangest tools.' The Canadian choreographer Édouard Lock and his company La La La Human Steps were part of the show, highly-acclaimed for their exceptional performance.
