1. Learning Outcomes (List by number the student learning outcomes or objectives/goals of this course.) Upon completion of the clinical education the MLS students should be able to:

1. Be proficient at performing clinical laboratory testing in all disciplines including hematology,

coagulation, clinical chemistry, immunology, microbiology, transfusion medicine, clinic microscopy,

molecular diagnostics and any emerging technology covered during the clinical education;

2. Correlate laboratory testing to disease states using critical decision making skills to resolve

problems and ensure quality of testing;

3. Utilize the essentials of quality systems to provide excellence wherever laboratory testing is

researched, developed and/or performed;

4. Participate in the development, evaluation and validation of test systems;

5. Establish and maintain continuing education as a function of growth and maintenance of

professional competence;

6. Exercise principles of educational methodology to provide leadership in education to other health

care personnel and the community;

7. Possess basic skills and knowledge in laboratory operation and management including quality

system planning, marketing, human resources and financial management;

8. Apply principles of information system management to provide effective, accurate , timely and cost

effective reporting of laboratory-generated information;

9. Demonstrate fundamental knowledge of research design and practice.

The changes are needed to align with the submitted Program Revision Proposal for the Medical Technology B. S. degree. 21. What are the additional graduate credit requirements for 400/500 level courses. None

The MSUM Medical Technology Academic Program Director, Kathryn M. Wise, is the instructor of record for the BIOL 460 course but this is not considered part of her teaching load. We are currently affiliated with a single NAACLS accredited program, that of Sanford Health- Program for Medical Laboratory Science. The current clinical program director at Sanford Health- Program for Medical Laboratory Science is Susan Hollister, MS, MT (ASCP) and the Laboratory Education Coordinator is Alice Hawley, MT (ASCP). Various laboratory personnel serve as the clinical instructors.

Degree from 128 to 120 at the 4/11/12 meeting and the minutes were approved on 4/25/12 (provided). Susan Hollister, MS, MT (ASCP), he current clinical program director at Sanford Health- Program for Medical Laboratory Science, worked on the alterations to the curriculum required by the credit reduction and said the reduction from 36 to 30 credits would work for their program. 26. BIOL 460 Medical Technology Clinical Education Clinical education in a school of medical technology in an affiliated hospital. Year-long sequence requires a total of 32 credits. Consent of instructor. Proposed Revision BIOL 460 Medical Laboratory Clinical Education Clinical education in a school/program of medical laboratory science in an affiliated hospital. 3. OUTLINE OF MAJOR CONTENT AREAS

1. The clinical education provides the MSL major with accurate, up-to-date education to meet the changing needs of the laboratory and health care environment.

2. MSUM affiliated, National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS) accredited, programs/schools provide a competitive opportunity to complete a 50 week training program in Medical Laboratory Science that completes the degree requirements of a three plus one or four plus one academic program in Medical Laboratory Science.

3. Students completing the 30 clinical education credits will have been given didactic and clinical instruction in eight major subject areas. Upon successful completion of the 30 credits students’ transcripts will show grades awarded for each of the eight major areas which include the following: Clinical Chemistry, Clinical Hematology, Clinical Immunology, Clinical Microbiology, Clinical Microscopy, Immunohematology, Professional Topics, and

Clinical Coagulation. 4. The year of clinical education prepares the students to take the American Society for

Clinical Pathology (ASCP) SCP Board of Certification exam to become certified Medical

Laboratory Scientists. The ASCP Board of Certification examinations for Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS)/Medical Technologist (MT) and Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) have been approved for licensure purposes by many states.

4. LEARNING OUTCOMES (General)

Upon completion of the clinical education the MLS students should be able to:

Bioscience Faculty Minutes April 11, 2012@ 8:15 am

Call to order

Ellen called to order the regular meeting of the Bioscience Department at 8:15 am on April 11, 2012 in Senior

Seminar Room-Hagen Hall 407

1) Minutes-The minutes of the meeting from April 4, 2012 were reviewed and a motion made by Linda to

accept the minutes was made with a second from Bee. Motion carried with 10 in favor and 1 abstention.

2) Department work plan-Ellen delivered a sample of the Department Annual Report that is due April 27,

2012. The following will be covered in the report;

Assessment Reporting-Alison, Bee and Brisch

Fundraising or development activities-Brisch

Department/Program efficiency in the past year-Brisch

Bean provider-Brian

Students accepted to graduate & professional programs-Kathryn

2 year course offering-Brisch

3) B.S. Life Science Education-Alison reported that the number of credits in Life Science Education is

will now be reduced to 120 credits. Kathryn reported the reduction of credits to 120 for Medical

Technology. This reduction requires revision of Biol 460 Medical Technology Clinical Education,

specifically with a reduction in summer internship hours from 12 to 6. Ellen made a motion that we

move forward with Life Science Education and Medical Technology credit reduction to 120. Approval

of Biol 460 was supported as part of the Medical Technology proposal. A second was made by Brian

and motion carried with a 10 in favor vote.

4) Richard Lahti-Alison reported that Physics Education and Chemistry Education are in the same

situation that Life Science and Medical Technology as far as reducing credits to 120.

5) Summer School-After a review of enrollment, it was decided to drop the Biology #390 Blood work

from the summer schedule.

6) Fall schedule-Discussion of a few of the classes for Fall 2012, regarding enrollment.

7) Course Outlines-are due by the end of the semester-Course outlines for all existing upper level

classes must be submitted by June 30, 2012.
