The St Mary's Church community wishes to do all we can to support, listen and love all in our parish whether members of our church or not.

The Pastoral Team at St Mary's have established a Prayer Circle at St Mary’s. If you have something which you would appreciate prayer for, whether for yourself or for someone you care about, we would be privileged to pray about it. No prayer request is ever too small or trivial. Whatever you wish to share, in confidence, we will support you in prayer.

To ask for prayer you can either telephone, email or text Rev Martin on 821241, [email protected] or 07762 440094; or contact Gillian Lunn on 07592016476 or [email protected] or speak to any member of the Pastoral Team and they will place your prayer in the circle. Please be assured your requests are confidential. To be a praying member of the circle or a member of the Pastoral Team, please speak to Rev Martin or Gillian. They would love to hear from you.

July and August 2019 Martin’s Message

Priorities, priorities…

Ah, July and August – a time for holidays, for rest and relaxation; a time to slow down a little and to soak up the sun… I write this wistfully in early June, as the rain continues to pour and with the central heating switched on! And June is proving to be another busy month: in our Benefice, our town, our workplaces and schools, and in our own lives.

With the arrival of these summer months, and in the continuity of this long post-Pentecost ‘Trinity’ season, we now have an opportunity to review and to reset the priorities in our lives.

When it comes to considering the life of our church, our need to know where we are going and how we will get there was the subject of my article in the June magazine. I concluded by saying: ‘During the coming weeks there will be a consultation as we all jointly consider which objectives to prioritise and how we can each play our part in becoming a people and a place where love works.’

In her sermon on 2nd

June, Gillian expanded on my article, and the sermon can be found on our website: www.richmondhudswellparish.org.uk/Portals/0/Documents/Sermons/2nd%20June%202019%20STM%2010am.pdf

as can the slides used to illustrate it:

www.richmondhudswellparish.org.uk/Portals/0/Documents/Sermons/2nd%20June%202019%20presentation.pdf .

Gillian set out the story so far of the development of a new vision and strategy for our church, reminding us how important it is for all of us to play our part – and thereby for each of us to feel part of something bigger than ourselves. We can do far more together than we ever could as individuals.

Gillian concluded her sermon by outlining the top priorities suggested by our PCC in their recent Away Day. The list was split into these fundamental areas of church life:

Our Purpose – Worship and Prayer,

Our Outreach – involving both Evangelism and Community Service

(ie word and action, in balance),

all energised by our Growth – through Discipleship and Pastoral Care,

and resourced by our Infrastructure – healthy Finances, fit for purpose Buildings, and efficient Administration.

In my sermon on 9th June (www.richmondhudswellparish.org.uk/Portals/0/

Documents/Sermons/ws190609.pdf ), I invited us to discuss these suggested priorities by considering three questions:

What might be missing?

What should we be doing first?

What part is God calling me to be playing?

3

Page 5: MINISTRY TEAM

Our discussion prompted a range of answers to these questions. Inevitably, however, only the people present could be involved in the discussion – which was limited to just a few minutes.

So in the space of the summer months of July and August I would like to ask you to think and pray about what you believe our priorities should be, and which area of church life you feel drawn to become involved in.

Do let me know your thoughts, either in writing or by speaking to me. Alternatively, please contact any member of our Parish Development Group: Bishop John, Scott and Gillian, Peter Trewby, Alexe Roberts, and Anna Boyce.

The Parish Development Group will consider which priorities are seen by you to be the most important – and crucially, what ‘human resources’ are available. A proposed Action Plan will then be brought to the PCC at their meeting on 18

th

September.

With best wishes for an enjoyable summer season.

Martin

THE PROPOSED ST MARY’S AUDIO-VISUAL SYSTEM You may have heard whisperings of our proposed new audio-visual system, but by

the time you read this we should have permission from the diocese which means

it’s for real and we are very excited. If you have a moment, do read the enclosed

leaflet which has more details.

In brief, as well as being the centre for worship and prayer, St Mary’s is the largest

open-door community centre in Richmond and is already a venue for concerts,

festivals and recitals. We wish to expand further this use of the church by the

community but are hampered by the lack of up-to-date technology. Our aim is to

install a state-of-the-art projector and 3 metre retractable screen suspended behind

the chancel arch as well as a new audio system. This will allow us to open the

church to the community for screening of films, sporting events and children’s

entertainment.

We are also planning a new initiative of dementia friendly screenings of films and

musicals. The technology will enhance our musical events and be of great value

during worship especially during services for young people. It will enhance the

experience of those attending funerals, christenings and marriages.

We need to be constantly adapting if the church is to stay alive at the centre of

community life and we believe this initiative hits the spot with regard to bringing

people into our church and enhancing the experience of those that attend already.

We have started the laborious business of applying for grants but in the meantime

we would love to hear from you. Positive or negative views would all be really

welcome. Please e-mail [email protected] or talk to me! I look forward to

hearing from you.

With many thanks and best wishes Peter Trewby

Fundraising Events - Coming up... A wine tasting evening on Saturday October 19 and a concert by Fourum on Friday 15th November at 7pm - more details to follow but put the dates in your diary. We are very excited about all that is happening and do hope you will come along. We have many fundraising events planned for the rest of the year and would be most grateful for any items that could be used for tombola or raffle prizes these can be brought to Church at anytime we will be having a raffle at the forthcoming Fashion Show and Coffee Morning both events in June Thank you so much for your support

Still very much wanted!!!! After 9 years of editing the magazine it very much feels the right time for someone new to take up the role. It’s not a big job. All it needs is someone with an eye for detail, a little bit of creativity and desire to help the church move forward. This role could be shared among a small group of people and divide

the tasks out so that no-one feels they have too much to do. Hopefully together they could co-edit the magazine and freshen it up to enable it to be a good window into the life of our church, our parish and our communities. For more information contact Gillian on 07592016476 or catch me at church on a Sunday morning x

THE MOTHERS UNION We enjoyed joining with the Women’s Fellowship in May along with leading the midday prayers at our Cathedral and in June we hosted our annual Afternoon Tea with Reeth Brass Band. This is our fundraiser event for the year which enables us to support children and families in need both in our Parish and further afield. The MU has caravans at Filey enabling families to enjoy a holiday they couldn’t otherwise afford. We also support The Family Help centre ( Women’s Refuge) who also do out reach work in homes for those who don’t wish to go to the refuge but need support at home. They also provide respite care. We were told of a lady in her eighties, a generation were divorce is unthinkable who regularly goes for respite. Abuse - mental as well as physical occurs in all ages and all of society. We also gave a donation to St. Mary’s. We presented Sian with a pair of “ Holy Socks” depicting a Rainbow and Noah’s Ark on her last Sunday at St. Mary’s . We celebrate Mary Sumner day at the Cathedral Thursday 8th August Under the alias of the Belles we provided refreshments at the Swaledale Festival concerts and at the confirmation service held in St. Marys. We are looking forward to the Plant and Produce Sale on 24th August when once again we will be running the cafe 10 till 5. We would welcome anyone who is interested in knowing more of the work of the Mothers Union, practical and prayer to come and have a chat over tea and cake! Thankyou Susan Scrafton

As part of our fundraising St Mary’s has produced its own mugs. £6 each - they show the St Mary’s logo and the phrase taken from Ruth’s Window “Hold on to that which is good”. Every home should have one! Available at any St Mary’s event, function or service.

“The Happy Bodgers”.

About a year ago a few of our gentlemen were looking at how they can work together to help others who may be in need of a practical assistance. As a result they formed a group called “The Happy Bodgers”. Happily they are far more skilled than their title suggests and they are able to offer a variety of help free of charge.

Try us - we can say no if we don't feel capable. We could probably not take on regular tasks such as lawn mowing, weeding, shopping etc.

Why not give us a call on 07866 325843 and Keith Robson will see if the Happy Bodgers can help, and take it from there.” We look forward to helping you.

Little Rainbows Little Rainbows continues to go well at St Mary’s Church. Meeting every Thursday in term time with doors opening at 9am and the session officially starting off with a welcome song at 9.30am this exciting group is in Church and is for younger members of our community. Called Little Rainbows (taking our inspiration from Ruth’s Window) this Group is children

focused with Bible Stories, singing, craft activities and refreshments.

We hope that by running this group we will enable those who look after children to find some support, friendship and community at the same time as the children are having fun.

If anybody would like to help at the group by just being an extra pair of hands please contact Martin on 821241.

FUN-KEY CHURCH @ ST MARY’S RICHMOND We held our annual Fun-Key Church Pet service on Sunday 30th June at 4pm when we welcomed pets of all shapes and sizes and their owners. All pets received a blessing, a certificate and a pet blessing bag. And if people didn’t have pets they could take a bag for a friend.

Our July service will be on Sunday 28th July at 4pm - plenty of fun, fellowship and activities. Our August gathering will be at Hudswell Village Hall (hopefully on the field if the weather is good) - Sunday 25th August from 2pm. Plenty of activities, strolls and food - possibly a BBQ. Keep an eye on “What’s On” on our church website richmondhudswellparish.org.uk or on Facebook for exact details nearer the time. All ages are welcome to everything we do. Gillian 07592016476

Bell Tour

On Saturday June 1st, nineteen bell ringers from St Mary's went on tour! As a rela-tively new ringer (only 5 years under my belt, as opposed to probably more than 50 for some!) I had never been on a bell outing. This was my first experience and it was great fun and quite a challenge.

We met at St Mary's Barnard Castle at 9.30am and rang there until 10.15am. Helen Scott, who is a Barnard Castle ringer but often rings with us at Richmond, took charge and organised the ringing. They have eight bells which are heavier than ours and slightly more difficult to ring so we were challenged from the start. From there we travelled to St Mary's Staindrop where Vicky Milne took charge and we rang for an hour. Like ours, they are Taylor's bells and the more experienced ring-ers amongst us would say that they are, "a lovely ring of eight." I don't think they are rung very often which is a shame - the ringing chamber was quite dusty!

Following lunch at The Red Alligator pub which was very nice, we rang at St An-drew's, South Church. Another ring of eight and this time Andrew Slade organised the ringing. The tenor was not the easiest of bells to control but we managed to make a decent sound (I think!)

It was then on to Shildon and St John's. An interesting ringing chamber with all sorts of memorabilia in it. Susan Welch - our Tower Captain took charge and once again we rang on eight bells. Our final tower of the day was St Mary's, Gainford. Only six bells here and they were tricky! John Welch took on the role of organising the ringing and two of Barnard Castle's learners joined us as well. It was very loud in the ringing chamber and it was at this point in the day that I realised what beauti-ful bells we have back at St Mary's, Richmond.

We ended the day at La Piazza in Richmond for a lovely meal. What an interesting day it had been! Different towers with different bells - for inexperienced ringers that is hard. Watching the experienced ringers ring what I call, "fancy stuff" - is some-thing to aspire to. Spending time with a group of people who love to ring but also lead interesting lives - there was time to get to know them a bit more.

I will definitely do it again - watch this space.

Listening to the One who listens

That’s my prayer isn’t it, but it’s other things, especially reading the Bible. John Dickinson gave us some brilliant tips and resources to help us make the most of Bible Reading, in June’s magazine. And this is just a PS to that.

Among the various Bible notes, I’ve used the BRF booklets most of my life and find them enjoyable and thought-provoking. There are two kinds, with New Daylight printing out the daily readings together with comments, and Guidelines needing a Bible (or screen) to hand, and being a little more demanding. There are large-print copies of New Daylight available and the all cover four months worth of readings.

I put in a regular order for these and would be very glad to add on more. They cost £4.60 a copy at the moment (£5.85 for large print). If you’d like to try one, do be in touch with me, please, (826649 or [email protected], or face-to-face!) You will have to wait until January for the next edition but worth waiting for! The “Good Book” has treasures to give us and such a lot of encouragement for us in our faith. Mark Beresford Peirse.

Prayer for July 2019 - “Oh God help us not to despise or oppose

what we do not understand”

Prayers for August 2019 - “May the great God whom I

worship, grant to my country a great and glorious victory. For

myself individually, I commit my life to him who made me, and

may his blessing alight on my endeavours for serving my country

the eve of his final battle, Trafalgar, at which he was fatally wounded.

Choral Evensongs at St Mary's!

Pentecost Sunday this year was on 9th June fell conveniently on the second Sunday and therefore Choral Evensong week. This year we had Evensong in the beautiful location of Marske church followed by a fantastic bring to share supper. The weather was even good enough for some of us to eat outside and for some of us to cycle (and even tandem) there.

The 14th July will see us back at St Mary's for a big end-of-term service of Choral Evensong. There will be no evensong in August BUT there will be a Songs of Praise service at 6.30pm on 11th August (followed by refreshments) when we will sing some favourite hymns and if you wish to sing in an ad-hoc choir then you would be most welcome.

In other really exciting news we will be celebrating our Patronal Festival on September 8th not just at the morning service but also at a special choral evensong combined (at St Mary's) with the choir of Bradford Cathedral! Music will include Noble's stylish setting of the Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis in b minor and other music appropriate for St Mary's Day.

Also in the pipeline is another visit to Ripon Cathedral to sing there and a workshop and concert with the phenomenal Barnsley Youth Choir, who sang here on their way to performing at the 2018 Edinburgh Festival

If you have any questions about any of these events, or indeed anything to do with our music at St Mary's please contact Chris Denton.

We urgently need extra financial support for St Mary’s Church. Each month we will discuss different ways that we can help St Mary's.

Regular giving. This is not just about paying the bills and wages (it is that as well) but about ensuring the very survival of St Mary’s and all it stands for as a centre of worship and ministry. If you are not already a regular donor please consider becoming one either by using a weekly envelope or by Standing Order. If you are already a regular giver, could you increase the amount you give? In addition, would you consider a one-off donation to get us through this difficult time? You can do this by online banking or telephone banking (sort code 40 – 38 – 19 account number 5070 1793) or by cheque whichever is easiest for you. Money can of course be given anonymously if you wish. Is your home insurance up for renewal this year? Don’t pay the premium until you get a quote from Ecclesiastical Insurance; “a different kind of business”. Ecclesiastical will donate £130 to St Mary’s for every new policy taken out. You could save money on the premium and St Mary’s will certainly benefit. Again, if you have any difficulty with the website or application talk to Rev Martin or Peter who will happily take you through it. Has to be done before 31s December 2019. For further details talk to the Rector or Peter Trewby. Don’t let this opportunity pass. We need everyone to give a little bit more. Thank you.

All in the month of July it was….

200 years ago, on 2nd July 1819 that the Cotton Mills and Factories Act 1819 was passed in Britain. It placed restrictions on the number of hours children could work in cotton mills. It was virtually unenforceable and had little effect, but it paved the way for later legislation.

25 years ago, on 21st July 1994 that Tony Blair was elected leader of Britain’s Labour Par-ty. He became Prime Minister in 1997.

10 years ago, on 31st July 2009 that Sir Bobby Robson, British footballer and manager, died. He played for, and managed, several teams, and managed the England national team between 1982 and 1990

God of Mission who alone brings growth to your Church,

send your Holy Spirit to give Vision to our planning,

wisdom to our actions, and power to our witness.

Help our church to grow in numbers, in spiritual commitment to you,

and in service to our local community,

through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

To my Uncle Harry (Sayer)

OLD SAILOR

No more watch to stand, old sailor for you are drifting on an ebbing tide.

Eight bells has rung, dog watch is done, a berth in paradise awaits you on the other side.

Your ship is anchored in God’s Harbour. We will see each other again, one day.

Your shipmates on the deck to meet you and cheer, as you ascend the gangway.

Her boilers, all fired up, galley stowed and brandy stored,

just waiting to get underway, when our Chief comes aboard.

Look sharp! Old sailor, that Chief is you.

And you’ll be sailing out on heavenly seas.

So may the wind be ever at your back.

Fair weather and rest in peace.

With Love

Becca
