Across the Pastor’s Desk

The past weekend was filled with excitement and surprises. The weather has again turned

from cold to warm. Monday, as I came to work it was beautiful, but after the last weekend, it was a

little eerie and disconcerting. Warm weather can sometimes turn to dangerous weather and I certainly

hope that is not the case today.

Friday morning I awoke to the news that our District Superintendent, the Reverend Terry

Fleming, had suffered a stroke the night before. I was shocked and began to pray without ceasing for

him, Carol and their daughters.

Saturday was frustrating as I watched football. I was thrilled with Duke’s victory as I love

when underdogs win, except against us. I was thrilled with Georgia’s fourth quarter comeback, then

disappointed over Auburn’s “miracle” play, and finally proud that the Dawgs fought until the final

play. You never know what will happen next.

Sunday we prayed for the people of the Philippines. I testified to my pride in being a United

Methodist because of the work of UMCOR. Later in the afternoon I watched as Solider Field in Chi-

cago was evacuated due to dangerous weather. On the evening news I learned of the destruction in

Illinois. I am confident the UMCOR is on the scene this morning.

As I reflected on the weekend, I was struck by how quickly life can change. We are foolish to

take life for granted. Yet we do. Putting God first in living and giving is not just a stewardship theme,

but should be a goal for life. Putting God first today for we have no guarantee about tomorrow. Part

of our giving today helps the church to respond to crisis’ tomorrow. Our living for God today pre-

pares us and others for what happens tomorrow.

This week when we gather for worship, we will celebrate God’s sacrifice for us and in re-

sponse, make our commitments to live and give to God in 2014. I look forward to seeing you this Sun-

day at 8:45, 9:45, or 11:00 a.m.

I would to thank everyone who participated in the construction of 50 Blessing Bags last Sunday! The "Blessing

Bags" are a life changing ministry to many different families in our community.

This Sunday (Nov. 24) we will be hosting a Bonfire by the ball-field from 5-8pm where we will be roasting hotdogs

and marshmallows. As a result we will not be having choir or usual UMYF.

Just a heads up: We will not be having Youth Choir or UMYF on Sunday, Dec 1st.

Reminder that your balance for the Ski Trip is due Dec 1st.

M I S C E L L A N E O U S CHARD WRAY FOOD PANTRY

Many families will enjoy Thanksgiving, thanks to the wonderful con-

tributions we have received from our schools “stuff the truck” canned

goods drive, a local church giving turkeys and our generous donations

from FUMC. We always need the basics each week: peanut butter,

flour, grits and cornmeal. Personal items like soap, toilet tissue,

toothbrushes and toothpaste are always needed. Thank you for your

help. The pantry will be closed November 28 until December 4th.

Christmas at the Fire Station

In an effort to honor and support our local firemen, a tree is going to be

decorated and given to the North Baldwin County district fire station by

Beth Joiner, the McAfee family and others. We would like for anyone

living in this area to donate an ornament, put your family’s name and year

2013 on it and drop by the church in a container labeled in the Mission’s

area. Thank you for sharing your Christmas spirit with our local firemen.

On December 3, United Methodists are in-

vited to participate in UMC

#GivingTuesday, when every gift made

online through The Advance will be

matched dollar for dollar. Building on the

recent US shopping traditions of Black Fri-

day, Local Business Saturday and Cyber

Monday, UMC #GivingTuesday offers an opportunity to start

off the holiday season by giving instead of getting through

supporting organizations that are transforming the world.

This is a great opportunity to build awareness and maximize

support for a project or missionary loved by your church.

bin for these blessings in the hall by the “Mission Tree”. Please

Let’s help others in need. Do not neglect doing good and sharing;

for with such sacrifices GOD is pleased. Hebrews 13:16 Thank you,

Heart Giving

God in His word doesn’t direct us as the church to build

cathedrals, but to bring our tithes to God’s storehouse as

His means of provision. We are the only hands that God

has to rebuild the places long devastated. We are the only

feet to carry the good news to the poor. We are the only

bank account that God has to save people on the planet.

We are it! That’s why the tithes matter.

Stephen Ministry Training: Do you have a knack for comforting others? Ever wanted to put that Spiri-tual Gift to good use? Have you ever felt at a loss for words or what to do when someone you know is facing tough times? We all have! Stephen Ministry training enables you to help. Join the next group as they learn to minister to others. Call Shirley Wiley, Referral Coordinator, at 478-234-0195, for more information.

CHRISTMAS POINSETTIA TREE

You are invited to participate in filling our Poinsettia Tree by donating a

plant in honor or in memory of a loved one. The cost is $10.00 per plant. An

insert listing all of those being honored or memorialized will be in the Wor-

ship Bulletin on Sunday, December 22. Please place your order by Mon-

day, December 16.
