New Car InnovationsWeighing your options ina world of technologyBy Anna TaylorFor the Longmont Times-Call

When shopping for a new car there aremany attributes you may take into account:price, color, engine size and so on. But withnumerous options out there it can be hardto wade through the technological jargonand figure out what new features are impor-tant for your lifestyle. Here is a breakdownof some of the newest car innovations thatmay just help you find your perfect ride.

Fuel Friendly, Earth FriendlyWith the price of gas skyrocketing and

more attention on the wellbeing of theworld, one of the biggest features of a carthat is important to many new buyers is fuelconsumption.“Of course with the price of gas and oil

the Nissan Leaf, which is an electric vehicle, has gotten a lot of attention, as well as thesmaller, more compact cars which get up-wards of 34 miles per gallon,” says Bob Tay-lor of Valley Nissan in Longmont. “There’salso a PEZD vehicle from Subaru which is apartial zero emissions vehicle which is avery environmental vehicle.”While electric and low emissions cars are

the best bet for making your commute more

green, other options, such as hybrid vehi-cles, also incorporate cutting edge technolo-gy to get the most out of your fuel tank.“The new Sonata Hybrid uses a parallel

hybrid system which is different because itcan run entirely either on the electric motoror the gas engine,” explains Justin Smith, asales representative at Longs Peak Hyundaiin Longmont. “It can run up to 74 miles perhour on just the electric engine.”This is vastly different from hybrids of the

past, which were known for getting greatmileage around town but only average onthe highways. Not ready to spring for a hybrid or elec-

tric? Check to see if the vehicle you’re look-ing into is a fuel flex vehicle, which can runon regular gasoline or E85 (a mixture of upto 85 percent ethanol). You can look up theVIN of the vehicle online or sometimesthese vehicles have labels that indicate fuelflex capabilities.

Safety FirstWhile some buyers may be interested in

finding the best mpg for their buck, othersmay be more interested in finding the safestride on the market.“One of the big things that happened after

the Toyota recalls is that the Nissans now

feature a smart pedal which disengages thevehicle if any issue occurs,” Taylor explains. This new technology monitors your vehi-

cle to dodge any unwanted accidents due tomalfunctions or mechanism failures – acomfort to know when shuffling familymembers around town or carpooling withcoworkers.“Every one of our vehicles comes with a

standard safety package that includes sixairbags, traction control and stability con-trol,” Smith says. “And many of our vehiclesare IIHS (Insurance Institute of HighwaySafety) top safety picks.”Other features such as back-up cameras

to prevent hitting other cars and alerts thatshow icy or slippery conditions are some ofthe features that are being incorporated intothe newer car models.

Tech Savvy ToolsAnother huge factor for many car buyers

today are the accessories that keep themjamming to their playlists, connected totheir social circle and getting directions totheir destinations at the touch of a button.“One thing that is very popular with

some of the younger consumers is the newelectronics in the radio such as Bluetooth,MP3 hookups and navigation systems,”Taylor says. Many of the newer vehicles have com-

pletely wireless systems that download yourcontacts and playlists directly to the car andsome are even completely controlled by thedriver’s voice.

“Most of our vehicles now come with aBluetooth system,” Smith says. “Also, buy-ers don’t need to buy a navigation systembecause it comes standard in many of ourvehicles.”

Some of these systems, such as Mobis, come with a 40 gigabyte hard-drive which ismuch faster, more accurate and have 50 mil-lion points of interest that make findingyour destination easy.

With the numerous vehicle choices, andhundreds of new innovations to make yourdrive more enjoyable, the most importantthing is looking at what your biggest priori-ties are for buying a new car. As Smith says,“All buyers have different motives.”

So weather you want the highest gasmileage or the top-of-the-line gadgets, thereare plenty of options in the new car line-upthat can satisfy any new car buyers needs.

Automakers are taking multiple approachesto raise the fuel economy of vehicles

without sacrificing performance

Less Gas, More PowerBy Jeffrey SteeleCTW Features

In this era of volatile gasoline prices andheightened environmental concerns, saving fu-el has become a big priority. And that goes notjust for drivers, but for carmakers, too. For thatreason, auto manufacturers are striving to ad-vance technological innovations that can helpvehicles reap maximum power from every pre-cious thimbleful of gas.James Bell, publisher of Los Angeles-based

automotive publisher Intellichoice, hopes theworld’s carmakers won’t ease up on their ef-forts to provide great fuel economy. “Fueleconomy continues to be a high priority forshoppers,” he says. “They’re saying they wantto do the right thing for the earth, for futuregenerations and for the current political situa-tion.”A number of gas-saving innovations have

been in carmakers’ advanced-planning labora-tories for years. But they went from the labs’back burners to the forefront of consciousnessas gas prices soared earlier this year, Bell says.Best of all, most boost a model’s fuel economywithout diminishing its performance. Here’s alook at some of them:

Direct Fuel InjectionThe technology of direct fuel injection en-

ables gas to be injected into each engine’s indi-vidual cylinders under high pressure. The ben-efit is that the exact amount of gas entering thecylinders can be more closely monitored. Thatnot only allows the engine to extract the mostpower from the least fuel, but also helps reduceexhaust emissions.

“This newer version of fuel injection wasfirst developed overseas for very small cars thatwere designed to be fuel sippers,” Bell says. “InEurope and Asia, the small car segment is thetop-selling segment, so a lot of technology and

investment goes into those vehicles. It will be atechnology that will be very common in allgasoline engines going forward.”

TurbochargingDeveloped decades ago to boost perfor-

mance in the auto-racing world, turbochargingwas offered in American production vehicles asearly as the 1960s, when Chevrolet marketed aturbo-equipped Corvair.

Today, turbocharging is enlisted in car man-ufacturers’ efforts to produce smaller engines

The Lincoln MKS brings to the premium segment a new balance of quietness and comfort with engaging steering and handling. The luxury sedan offers available all-wheel drive and a new Lincoln exclusive, fuel-efficient 3.7-liter V-6 at launch.

that paradoxically provide greater performance, satisfyingcar buyers’ demand for both horsepower and fuel savings. Aturbocharged engine features two small turbines with a postconnecting the two. Exhaust gases coming from the engineturn the turbine on one side, which in turn spins the otherturbine, injecting air into the cylinders’ air-fuel mixture at amuch higher rate than would be possible at standard ambi-ent air temperatures.“Performance comes when you get more oxygen into that

combustion process,” Bell says. “You get a bigger explosion, creating more power.”Next year, Ford Motor Co. will add a twin-turbocharged

V6 engine to its Lincoln MKS luxury sedan, which is a mod-el that would normally call for a big V8 engine, Bell says.Ford calls the technology EcoBoost. It allows the companyto eliminate two cylinders but continue to offer the fullpower of a V8, he adds.

Variable Displacement EnginesThe objective of variable displacement engines is to allow

the engine’s cylinders to adjust to a smaller size when thevehicle is carrying light loads or the driver is seeking maxi-

mum fuel economy but grow to a greater size when morepower is required. It sounds great, but the technology is stillin its infancy. “It’s more of an engineer’s dream,” Bell says. “Ithink we will see growth in other fuel-saving technologiesbefore we see full evolution of variable displacement en-gines. That’s because they’re still very expensive, and thusfar haven’t proven themselves over hundreds of thousandsof miles of testing.”

Automatic Engine ShutdownThis technology is realized in two ways. The first is

through cylinder shutdown. To give an example, under verylight loads, a six-cylinder engine can shut off three of itscylinders to save fuel. Cylinder shutdown has been aroundsix or seven years, and is available on many of today’s vehi-cles, including the Honda Accord and Chrysler 300.The other approach was introduced to the motoring pub-

lic in gas-electric hybrids, notably the Toyota Prius. But it’snow finding its way into non-hybrid production cars, partic-ularly smaller cars manufactured in France. When the car halts at a stoplight, the engine shuts off and

the battery and electrical system continue to power the car’slights, sound system and other systems. In hybrids, the elec-trical system also powers the car away from the stop afterthe light changes; in non-hybrids the engine takes over atthat point.Bell, who has owned hybrids, says this advancement is

easy to like. “It’s one of those technologies that’s a headslapper,” he says. “When you drive a vehicle that doesn’tturn off at a stoplight, you feel very inefficient.”Work will surely continue in automakers’ laboratories on

current and future technological advancements designed tohelp vehicles save fuel. “It’s going to allow for a future that’smore efficient, but no less fun,” Bell says.

Small cars maybe the future

Compact cars like the Toyota Prius could grow increasingly visible on the nation’s roadways thanks to future government regulationsregarding fuel economy. (Courtesy Toyota)

Metro Services

Consumers have long operated under the presumptionthat “bigger is better,” which is often reflected in the size ofthe vehicles on the road. However, future mandates on fueleconomy could significantly increase the number of com-pact cars being bought and sold, and big cars might get arun for their money. In the past, bigger cars might have been the popular

trend. Muscle cars of the 1960s, giant sedans of the 1970sand even the pumped-up SUVs of modern day are all biggervehicles. But with the advent of the fuel-efficient car and hy-brid or electric models, many people could find themselvesdriving a compact car in the next few years.According to U.S. federal requirements, automotive in-

dustry products must average 35.5 miles per gallon by 2016,and proposed regulations could increase that number to 62mpg by 2025. What this means for auto makers and con-sumers alike is that small cars could grow increasingly pop-ular.Automakers are already beginning to invest heavily in

smaller vehicles. Compact cars were popular and promi-nently featured attractions at auto shows throughout 2010and into 2011.Consumers who once leaned toward larger vehicles may

now purchase compact cars thanks to escalating fuel costsand more eco-conscious consumerism. Compact hybridshave already become trendy among the celebrity set, and

many fans may choose to emulate their favorite A-listers.The “green” movement has certainly changed consumerperception of small cars.

What’s more, automakers are revamping features thatnormally caused people to shy away from compact cars. In-terior space is being reconfigured to offer more headroomand legroom. Plus, automakers are packing compacts withinnovative features and gadgets that make them appealing toan increasingly tech-savvy society.

According to Ralph Gilles, Dodge CEO and ChryslerGroup design chief, “Not only do people want them, but(the cars) are becoming more interesting.”

People who are not fiscally or environmentally mindedmay lean toward the abundance of smaller cars at dealer-ships. That’s because compact cars are affordable first cars orgood options for singles and older couples looking to down-size. Young males may consider sporty, suped-up coupes. With small cars, there certainly is a widespread market.

Plugging Electric Cars

By Jeffrey SteeleCTW Features

Choices, choices, choices. After a century of producing cars that ran solelyon gasoline, the world’s automakers are working overtime to present a varietyof options, including hybrids, biofuel-powered cars and vehicles that run onhydrogen. Some of the biggest bets are riding on Americans getting charged upover the notion of mass-produced electric cars. Most eagerly anticipated last year was the 2010 Chevrolet Volt, which Gen-

eral Motors called an “extended range electric vehicle.” According to Rob Pe-terson, manager of electric vehicle technology communications with GeneralMotors in Detroit, the Volt features a nearly 400-pound T-shaped lithium-ionbattery that’s aligned down the vehicle’s center spine beneath the passengercompartment. The battery propels the Volt for its first 40 miles on a charge. That number is

significant, Peterson says, because nearly 80 percent of the U.S. populationfaces daily one-way commutes of fewer than 20 miles. Once the battery reachesa lower state of charge, the Volt’s gasoline-powered generator kicks in torecharge the battery, allowing it to continue powering the vehicle down theroad for a few hundred additional miles. But those who stay within that 40-mile round-trip to work each day

wouldn’t need the generator and could ostensibly do 100 percent of their

Honda’s sporty new hybridis good, clean funHonda’s high-tech successor to the fondly

remembered CR-X hatchback from the late1980s, the futuristically styled CR-Z two-seater zipped out at this year’s North Ameri-can International Auto Show in Detroit.Honda calls it “a personal sport hybridcoupe for people with a spirit of adventureand an elevated sense of responsibility to-ward the environment.”

The CR-Z teams a 1.5-liter gasoline en-gine with an electric motor-generator andself-charging battery pack to produce theequivalent of 122 horsepower, which is

more than enough to propel this low-slungtwo-door with authority. In a nod to sports-car purists, a six-speed manual transmissionis standard, with a gearless CVT automaticoptional. commuting on pure electricity. Some observers believe cars that run on

lithium-ion batteries, on which GM is bank-ing heavily, are more likely to be profitablein the long-term than current hybrid tech-nology. Because so-called two-mode hybridsfeature two separate power trains – one gasand one electric – they are expensive tomanufacture, and even economies of scalewill not mitigate that cost. In addition, thenickel-hydride batteries used exclusively intoday’s hybrids is also exceptionally costly, owing to the fact that nickel is an expensivemetal that’s expected to become even moreso throughout time. The price to develop lithium-ion batteries

is daunting now, those experts argue. Butonce developed, those batteries will powervehicles that will be more affordable tomanufacture on a long-term basis than to-day’s hybrids.According to Peterson, the Chevy Volt

went into production in November 2010,with first sales to the public before the endof that year.Meanwhile, Toyota is planning to unveil a

mass-produced battery electric vehicle, orBEV, according to John Hanson, nationalmanager of environmental safety and quali-ty communications for Torrance, Cal.-basedToyota Motor Sales USA. Toyota expectsthat car to be on the market in the early2010s.This all-electric vehicle is to be seen as

separate and distinct from Toyota’s currentand planned hybrid models (including acoming plug-in version of the popularPrius). It is expected to be a small, urban-focused car. While Toyota has thus far been tight-

lipped about specifics on the BEV, the au-tomaker in recent months has appeared tosignal its intent to pursue multiple alterna-tive energy options. Toyota convened a“Sustainable Mobility Seminar” for in Port-land, Ore., where oil industry forecaster Pe-ter Wells predicted global oil productionwould peak in nine to 15 years. Wells sug-

gested electricity generated from clean, re-newable sources – not ethanol and bio-fuels– represents the best long-term bet for fuel-ing future vehicles. With the world’s two most dominant au-

tomakers set to duke it out on the electricfrontier at the dawn of the next decade, oth-er carmakers are readying electric cars. InMarch 2008, Mitsubishi Motors unveiled abusiness plan calling for further develop-ment of its all-electric model called the i-MiEV (Mitsubishi Electric Vehicle). In ajoint venture with GS Yuasa Corporation,Mitsubishi has developed its own lithium-ion battery, and is preparing to mass-pro-duce the i-MiEV by 2010.In the meantime, Nissan plans to intro-

duce a boxy electric vehicle now called theDenki Cube Concept to fleet buyers by2010 and to retail customers by 2012, thewebsite hybridcars.com reports. Wordhas it the vehicle will be capable of travelingup to 75 miles per hour and 100 milesper charge, with a re-charge taking abouteight hours. And Chrysler unveiled proto-types of an all-electric Dodge sports car, andextended-range electric versions of its JeepWrangler SUV and Town & Countryminivan.Honda, a company some see as virtually

synonymous with innovation, is stayingclear of the plug-in battle – at least for now.Bloomberg reported that Honda officials be-lieve lithium-ion batteries, which are yetunproven and pack half the energy of gaso-line by weight, are still “too primitive” toconsider plug-in vehicles a worthy succes-sor to the traditional gasoline-powered ve-hicle.Rather than battling GM and Toyota in

the plug-in electric race, Honda intends tocontinue perfecting its hydrogen-poweredFCX Clarity vehicle, now being tested in se-lect southern California areas.Said president of Honda research Masaaki

Kato of the hydrogen technology, “We be-lieve it’s easier than battery innovation.”
