How Master Lee Academy was formed

As a Fitness Professional and Martial Arts Trainer I knew that hitting focus mitts,

pounding punching bags, and kicking targets were fun for the clients and were great workouts

that produced great results. Clients were thrilled to learn boxing and kickboxing drills. So for

me it was fun and easy.

I soon discovered that many friends and colleagues of mine either ran out of ideas of

what to do and some even had bad experiences with injuries. By not knowing how to hold

targets properly they were hurting their shoulders and even worse their clients were getting

hurt by hyperextending their joints and also muscles being pulled.

That is when I knew that there had to be a source for trainers to teach with proper

technique and show ways to keep the session’s safe and stimulating for business. This guide

will allow you to be the expert trainer. Yes you do need to have the basics down so that you

can teach and demonstrate how to kick and punch, but you don’t have to be the Master. My

techniques will give you quick tips on safety and how to be creative with single and

combination drills. Your clients will have fun because they will be challenged and leave smiling

and sweating and safe each time. So take it slow and have fun.

Introduction

Welcome to the

MasterLeeAcademy PRO TRAINER GUIDEBOOK

This guide was designed for the Fitness Professional who wants to improve their training

sessions with their clients. But before you do that you want to make sure you know what you’re

doing so that YOU and your client stay safe and injury free. Let’s face it people love hitting

things. It gets out aggression, and they feel empowered. But how to strike targets with punches

and kicks properly is the key. So you will discover some real quick and simple tips on how to

how to execute kicks on pads, bags and shields, and what to look out for so everyone is safe.

Proper stance, hand positioning, and foot placement will be shown. Make sure you and your

client are warmed up and stretched out as some techniques require high kicks and you don’t

want to pull those muscles.

Stance

The trainer’s stance should (not always) be the same as the client’s.

Front, neutral and guard stance will be the most commonly used.

Front Stance is safe as it keeps your legs and groin from being hit.

is mostly used for high kicks as it makes it easier to elevate the targets.

Guard stance is best used for punching and combination sets. It gives the trainer the quickest mobility.

Guard Stance with chest height position for punches.

Front Stance with extended grip is good for long kicks such as roundhouse or front kicks. Depth of your stance will vary on height of client. I were training a taller client my stance would be wider.

Neutral Stance with High Grip is necessary for executing high kicks such as Crescent Kicks.

Holding Positions

Grip the Kicking Paddle with a firm and relaxed grip. Don’t squeeze too hard but do keep your fingers wrapped around completely. Give a little resistance to the strikes and go with the flow

of strikes.

Punching

Timing is very important. The paddles are flexible and soft but can hurt if you hit too soon and

too hard. Too late and client will over reach and hyperextend. So start slow gauge the distance

before going full speed.

Basic 1-2 Combination is the best warm-up to start with

Have your stance match client’s and your left hand should meet their left hand and right hand

should meet their right hand.

Hook punches need to have wrists flexible with tight grip. As they punch their elbows should be high-leveled with shoulders and target holder/trainer should have elbows up high as well. Uppercut Punches are great for speed and core workout. Have paddle loose and moving quickly.

Kicks

Front Kicks should be the first kick taught as they are simple to execute and are great for warming up the hamstrings and glutes.

Trainer should have holding position low and positioned in Front stance. Position A allows more speed and greater workout for quads and glutes by striking with top of foot.

A B Figure B has foot position geared more for striking bags or vertical shields. Not ideal for kicking paddles.

Roundhouse Kicks need a little more attention to setup and details.

Rotate front foot towards direction of kick, chamber horizontally and position knee facing

target. Always point knee to target as where the knee points the foot will strike.

There are two variations with roundhouse kicks:

(A)-Striking focus mitts and paddles the foot is the main source.

(B)-Striking foam shields and bags the foot can be used but more power is generated when applying the shin.

Jumping Kicks

Paddles are best used for jumping kicks as focus mitts are too short and don’t offer protection on trainers joints. Focus on elbows close to shoulder height.

Ax Kicks are great for the lower abs as client’s legs have to stretch and tighten core muscles. Position hands in high hold reverse grip and keep arms loose.
