MCSS VisionSince 2011, the Michigan Center for Student Success has provided state-level support to Michigan’s 28 community colleges by serving as a hub connecting leadership, administrators, faculty, and staff in their emerging and ongoing efforts to improve equitable student outcomes, emphasizing linkages between practice, research, and policy.

A Look Back—Guided Pathways in Michigan

@MCCACSS#MiStudentSuccess

Since the publication of Redesigning America’s Community Colleges in 2015, guided pathways reform has become a national movement in community colleges.

As of spring 2021, more than 300 community colleges have committed to undertaking large-scale guided pathways reforms as part of national, state, or regional efforts, and many other colleges are doing so on their own.

Research on Guided Pathways in the Humanities

Susan Bickerstaff & Selena Cho

Two-year mixed-method project:

1. Understand programs and pathways for students in the humanities, and identify ways to strengthen cross-sector transfer pathways

2. Identify the course-taking patterns and progress indicators for students who enroll in humanities courses in community colleges

Project Overview

What we’ve learned so far

We have conducted over 20 interviews with faculty and

administrators across the state, representing all three

sectors, and in all four disciplines.

On humanities pathways...● Enhancing recruitment and advising● Strengthening cross-sector interpersonal relationships

On diversity, equity & inclusion...● Improving diverse representation in faculty and texts● Communicating the value of the humanities

Quantitative data analysis

MCSS Project OverviewBetween Fall 2021-Fall 2022 , MCSS will convene faculty across MCCA, MASU and MICU institutions to discuss the role of humanities in the disciplines and general education curricula, issues of equity and inclusion, strategies for strengthening transfer pathways, opportunities to enhance teaching and learning in lower division coursework, and brainstorm collaborative possibilities to increase “light the fire” experiences for students.

Final Deliverables

• Qualitative and quantitative research reports (CCRC)

• “Roadmap” briefs for each discipline (expected Fall 2022)

Targeted Humanities Disciplines: Communication, English, History, Theater Arts

April 23, 2021 MiHumanities Faculty Leads Discussion Re-Cap –

@MCCACSS#MiStudentSuccess

April 23, 2021 MiHumanities Faculty Leads Discussion Re-Cap –Opportunities for development shared by peers

• Stronger transfer pathways

• Building bridges between programs and initiatives

• What is the value of humanities competencies (critical thinking, oral communications, etc.); more consistency and advocacy in this messaging

• Recruitment/pipeline from general education to major; “found” majors

• Pathways to skills and good jobs

• Establishing cross-sector discipline network groups

• Faculty want collaboration and collegiality, not competition

• Course and program outcomes alignment

• Collaboration beyond curriculum (e.g. theater arts productions)

@MCCACSS#MiStudentSuccess

MiHumanities Faculty Leads Padlet Discussion Summaries (Summer/Fall 2021)Opportunities for development noted across the discipline groups

Equity & Inclusion

• Data diving/data collaboration

• Processing COVID

• Inclusive pedagogy

Transfer Pathways

• Communications/networking across the discipline

• Learning outcomes and assessment

• Transfer alignment (courses, programs)

• Course leveling issues

• Questions about rigor

• Leveraging the MTA to “find” majors

• Thinking long-term about pathways in/to the discipline

Teaching & Learning

• Course design/alignment

• Updating/modernizing pedagogy for survey courses

• What resources exist? (DQP x2)

• Multiple purpose of lower division coursework/Gen ed overlaps

• Practical skills – correspondence, critical thinking, etc. and connection to jobs

Light the Fire

• Identity/value of humanities and the disciplines

• What are these things?• Outside the classroom experiences

• Inside the classroom – connect learning to life experience, personal needs

• Communications/networking across the discipline for content expertise, collaborative options
