STORM Dennis caused havoc anddevastation across the UK at theweekend – but left the Stratford districtrelatively unscathed.

The Environment Agency imposedalerts on rivers such as the Avon, Alne,Arrow and Stour, but flood defencesacross the district mainly held firm.

In Stratford, the RecreationGround, wildlife island and fields nextto Warwick Road flooded as the Avonreached 1.45m yesterday (Monday).Meanwhile, strong winds causeddamage to property and fences.

In Alcester, levels were highest atGunnings Bridge, where river waterreached the arches of the bridge.

Mike Gittus, part of the group which

looks after Alcester’s flood defences, said: “The town centre remained flood-free. The pumps and tanks did their joband while the flood plains wereflooded, they are part of the naturaldefences of the town. There were oneor two deluges and areas did flood onland that was already waterlogged.”

Shipston town centre managed toavoid flooding. Phil Wragg, chair ofShipston Flood Action Group, said: “Iflevels rise above four metres we’d startworrying, but they didn’t and the rainwas spread over 36 hours. Heavy rainthat falls in short bursts is the type thatcan cause problems for defences.”

River levels were also high in Bid-ford and Welford.

A TERRIFIED swan was left with horrificinjuries after being attacked by a dog bythe River Avon in Stratford.

The dog was running free, off its lead, and pounced on the bird with its ownernowhere in sight.

Cyril Bennis, of Stratford Swan Rescue, said the incident was totally avoidable andurged dog owners to keep their pets on alead near the river.

He said: “We had a call from a memberof the public saying that they had spotteda swan in distress down near the lock atHoly Trinity Church.

“I went down and a man told me he hadseen what happened. He told me a husky-type dog had chased two swans downthere – one managed to get away but theother was rugby-tackled by this dog as itlanded. The owner was nowhere in sightwhen all this was happening.

“It was just in an awful state when I gotthere – it had four deep puncture wounds.I took it straight to the Ark veterinarypractice, who were magnificent, treatingthe animal right away.

“It’s being cared for at a sanctuary atWychbold but it’s still touch and go. It wasvery seriously injured and there’s nochance of it going back to the river at themoment because of the risk of infection.

“It’s taken a big team effort to find and

help this swan and I’d like to thankeveryone who has been involved.

“The terrible thing is that this was alltotally unnecessary – the owner of the dogwas just not there. Dog owners simplyneed to keep their animals on a lead whenthey are down by the river and there’swildlife about. It’s not the dogs’ fault –they are natural predators.

“I think some owners just don’t care orthey think it’s funny to see their dogschase other animals, but it’s not. I doapproach dog owners sometimes to askthem to put their animals on a lead, butoften I just get sworn at.

“This latest attackwas horrific. Ownersneed to use theircommon sense andkeep their dogs ona lead. They haveto take responsi-bility . If they can’tthen it’s them whoneed to go to trainingschool, not their dogs.”

HORRIFIED: Cyril Bennis.

At SG Doors we specialise in the fitting of bespoke double skinned, insulated, remote control, electric roller garage doors that can be supplied to your specifications, including a range of different colours. We also fit composite front doors.

Roller Garage Doors are efficient space savers; rather than swinging the door to the side or outwards in front of the garage, the roller system means the doors roll directly up into a to roll system mounted above the door frame.

GAIN EXTRA GARAGE SPACE

The space saving allows you to park close to the garage door with no risk and also saves space inside the garage. It also removes the danger of outward swinging garage doors striking unseen persons or objects outside.

SAFER THAN CONVENTIONAL GARAGE DOORS

Essentially a Roller Garage Door is an insulated double skin aluminium curtain protecting your garage. With the double side brush in the guide runners and a curtain that rolls right to the floor, it excludes draughts and is effcient andconvenient at both restricting and allowing access to the garage.

Stay warmer in winter, stay

cool in summer, reduce noise,

reclaim unusable space

Remember the pleasure of owning your brand new conservatory? That extra space you had longed for and the dreams of a relaxing evening whilst the sun went down? However, those dreams soon evaporated as the sun’s heat made the space too uncomfortable to sit in, and the noise of the rain hitting the clear roof meant you couldn’t hear yourself speak, but worse was to come – winter has arrived, and your conservatory is now too cold and uninhabitable. High energy costs and the fact that any warmth generated goes straight out of the roof. Your conservatory remains unusable for over 6 months of the year.

Fit an insulated ThermeRoof to your conservatory now!

TOTAL Roofcare has the perfect answer – we can transform your conservatory into a space that can be used all year round, even in the coolest weather, by simply changing your existing roof for an insulated tiled ThermeRoof you can create a thermally efficient room that can be used all year round without the sky-high energy bills. ThermeRoof is installed by our nationwide installation teams and your conservatory is transformed within a few days. ThermeRoof is installed to the existing window and door frames and achieves a U value of 0.18, which ensures your room will be warmer this winter and cooler next summer.

ThermeRoof by Total Roofcare Ltd is fully compliant with Local Authority Building control Regulations. CLIMATE change, mental health andplastic waste are just some of thepressing issues on the agenda for newmembers of Warwickshire YouthCouncil.

A total of 25 new recruits joinedthe council at a special event at ShireHall in Warwick.

During their year-long term ofoffice, the youngsters will representthe views and interests of youngpeople with councillors, MPs andother decision-makers.

Outgoing member Daisy Tippingsaid: “I decided to get involved in the

Warwickshire Youth Council as I feltthat young people are often ignored, and I wanted to do more to raiseawareness of issues around mentalhealth and safety on the streets forboth girls and boys.”

Youth councillor Isaac Searle said:“Climate change is absolutely thebiggest threat to us, and youngpeople are leading the way in doingsomething about it. I recently spokeat a full council meeting and a motionwas passed to make climate change apriority for the council.”

The youth council recently ran a

consultation called Have your Say,with the top three priorities identifiedas cutting plastic waste, supportingmental health and improving careersadvice and work experience opportu-nities.

Cllr Izzi Seccombe said: “It’sincredibly rewarding to see so manypeople take part and I thank all ofthose who took part this year. It isalways refreshing to see so manyyoung people get involved in poli-tics.”

BACK TO THE FUTURE: 1980s hot hatches are beating supercars.

RACINGBACK TOTHE 80sNEW research shows that more andmore Brits would prefer to get behindthe wheel of a 1980s hot hatch insteadof a modern thoroughbred supercar.

Indeed, while some supercars avail-able to drive with www.trackdays.co.uk can reach speeds of 200mph ormore, it’s the nostalgia of the 80spocket rocket that has seen bookingsrise faster in recent months.

The latest figures released from thewebsite show that 80s hot hatch book-ings rocketed in the second half of2019.

They were up by almost a thirdcompared with the first half of 2019and while supercar bookings alsoincreased, it was about half that forhot hatches – despite there being moreexperiences to choose from.

Operations manager Dan Jonessaid: “80s hot hatches are more pop-ular than ever, even though they aremore than 30 years old.

“We’ve seen bookings recentlyincrease faster for these ultra-coolclassics than for modern supercars andtheir popularity shows no sign ofslowing down, just like the cars them-selves.

“They are just as much fun to driveand are a great reminder of when thesescorchers ruled the roads.”

Meanwhile, further research fromthe driving experience provider

reveals that it is people aged between45 and 54 who are making the mostbookings, possibly reliving theiryouth.

However, the younger generationare hot on their heels when it comes totesting the speed and performance ofan 80s hot hatch, with a quarter ofbookings coming from those aged 25to 34.

Iconic cars still available to drivewith TrackDays.co.uk from thedecade that saw yuppies, the Rubik’scube and the end of the Cold Warinclude the Volkswagen Golf GTi,Ford Escort RS Turbo and Peugeot205 GTi.

Unless you have deep pockets, actu-ally owning one of these models inpristine condition is beyond the reachof many people.

A Peugeot 205 GTi once sold atauction for more than £38,000.

Dan added: “A driving experienceat a race circuit is now the only wayfor many of us to still enjoy an 80s hothatch as prices for these iconic modelsin good condition can even now fetchastronomical amounts.”

To learn more about what’s on offerat TrackDays.co.uk, or further detailsof its 80s hot hatch blast, visitwww.trackdays.co.uk or www.trackdays.co.uk/experience/80s-hot-hatch-driving-blast/4886/
