Mufti Day – Kokoda Youth Program Tuesday was our Mufti Day for this term (Kokoda themed) and we raised over $1300 for the Kokoda Youth Program through gold coin donations. We were fortunate to have Jo Clark (OAM, Olympic Gold Medalist - 2000 and the Community Engagement & Communications Officer at the Kokoda Youth Foundation) visit us to share the stories behind how our fundraising is helping young people at risk in our local area. Again this year, a number of our Sen-ior students and College staff have been training for the upcoming Kokoda Challenge event, and their persistence, determination and sense of mateship is an inspiration.

Preparing for Exams – Senior Study Sessions / Year 11 & 12 ExamsThis Wednesday the Year 12 students and a number of their teachers stayed behind after school to study together in the CRC. Next Wednesday the Year 11 students will do the same. There is no doubting the benefits pre-exam sessions have for our students. All Year 11 & 12 students have an exam on the morning of Friday 20th June and will be dismissed at 12.40pm.

I’d like to thank Mrs Hamilton for her work in coordinating this wonderful tour and for her presentation on Tuesday. If you are a Year 7 parent, and you were unable to attend, materials will be accessible through Parent Lounge.

Positive Education - Mindset – Fixed verses GrowthWith exams and assessment deadlines looming I thought it timely to review the concept of Mindset (Dweck) in our re-cent Senior School Assembly. As Henry Ford said, “whether you think you can or think you can’t, you’re probably right”. We discussed the fixed verse growth mindset table below and the students were asked to identify which side of the table they most identified with to ascertain their mindset (or belief in their ability to improve, grow and develop). The students then watched “The Last Lecture” by Randy Pausch to gain a deeper understanding of what a growth mindset looked, felt and sounded like. Preparation Tips for Exam BlockVery soon our Year 11’s will undertake block exams for the

freshments will be available.

A final noteAs we enter the busy assessment period and our Year 10 students prepare for their work experience in Week 9, I remind parents that teachers are always happy to hear from you. If you have any questions, concerns or sentiments of gratitude to share, I encourage you to send an email or to contact the College. We are all here to help.

first time. Here are some tips to prepare for exams.Take the time to plan• Plan your exam block including goals and daily commit-

ments. Make sure it is realistic and balanced. • Talk to your employers early to let them know you

need to limit your shifts / hours while studying.• Ensure your study space is comfortable, quiet, well lit,

organised and without distractions eg TV, phone.• Look after yourself.• Eat well (salad, vegetables, protein, nuts) for focus and

energy.Rest when you need to• Work out what times of day you have the most energy

and plan to study then.• Don’t study more than 40-60 mins without a short

break.• Try not to worry about other stuff happening in your

life eg relationships or friendships.• Ensure you wind down before bed to slow brain activity

eg slow, deep breathing, a shower or a bath, herbal tea or glass of milk.

Stay focused• Say “no” to parties during the weeks close to the ex-

ams to ensure you are sharp and focused.• When studying, switch your phone and email off to

stop the distractions.Ask for help:• Ask your teachers questions and seek feedback.• Talk about what you are studying as this helps to retain

the information.• Attend a few more tutorials or organise a focused

study group with like-minded peers.Be prepared• Read/ write everything three times as this helps to com-

mit information to memory.• Ask friends what they are doing that is helping with

their study.• You need to study within 24 hours of the exam on that

subject to retain more information.• Write things in coloured texta that you have trouble

remembering (names and dates) and blu-tack to your wall/door.

Day of the exam:• Stick to your usual routines.• Plan to arrive well before the start time.http://www.headspace.org.au/is-it-just-me/find-information/exam-survival Congratulations to:• The House and Sports Captains who ran the Futsal

BinGoJuWarra Challenge recently for Middle School students. Great work!

• Ashley Hayes who was selected to be a youth ambas-sador as part of a program run through Bond University to assist villages in the Solomon Islands.

• The Leo Club for their recent work collecting warm coats for the homeless.

• The Senior students who were involved in Arts Week and their teachers (notably Miss Scott and Mr Oakley Grant.)

• Miss Yeo and her Year 12 BCT students for the activi-ties they ran at the Nursing Home and in the Middle and Junior Schools as part of the events management unit.

• The Senior Futsal teams who won their competition and are on to the next stage and thanks coaches.

Servant Leadership & Meaningful LearningService Learning is an essential part of Lutheran education. We understand the importance of integrating faith in God to our work and our learning. For students to understand and gain meaning for their study and work is vital to their wellbeing and motivation. This model is sometimes counter cultural, but to serve is not to be a slave, but to lead, to influence and to shape our world. There are a range of programs and opportunities for young people at St An-drews to serve, lead and influence others. When reflecting with some students recently, here’s what I heard:

Sam (Growing Good Men) – ‘It was good to get out of the house. It was good to have a reason to do something rather than nothing, you know, just walking around the house. To know that our work helped make someone’s day and support them in the work they do. Yeah, it’s good.’

Taylor (St Andrews Aged Care) – ‘It is good to give back. We have a responsibility to give back to older people who have already served our country, our community and our families. Because others have done so much for us, it is important to give back and be willing to help.’

Ashley (Year 11 Christian Studies + Coats for a Cause, Rosies) – ‘I’m learning that I love helping people. Making a difference to people who sometimes struggle to help themselves. I’m seeing that small actions add up to greater things. I realise that my service often brings joy to others, but also gives me joy. I’m seeing how others live and how unfair some situations are. This is confronting but it is also motivating to find out how to do more.’

Rachel (Year 12 House Captains – Bingojuwarra Challenge) – ‘Great for us to get out of ruts and click relationships, forcing us to learn to relate to younger students. Helping younger students have confidence to engage with senior leaders. Fun watching others having fun, encouraging them and knowing they’re benefitting from it.’

In chapels through out the term, secondary students are hearing about the values of Humanity, Love and Justice. To accompany this with programs which offer them real and

Year 8 CampThe first Year 8 Camp for a number of years was held during NAPLAN week and its success reflected the positive attitudes of both the students and the staff who attended. When I visited the Camp on Tuesday afternoon it was evident that (whilst being somewhat sleep-deprived) the various camp groups were demonstrating the qualities of cooperation and enthusiasm which make these events very worthwhile. Thanks must go to Ms Colleen Dockstader for her organisation of the camp.

DebatingThe first debating team from St Andrews in five years wrapped up its regular season last week with a 50/50 re-cord. This is an admirable feat for a team of students who prior to the season had not witnessed a competitive debate, particularly as many of their opposition teams participated in a Year 7 competition. I look forward to being able to enter teams from both Years 8 and 9 in 2015.

iPad CareJust a reminder to parents that students should be keep-ing their iPads in a sturdy case. It is the time of year when complacency can sometimes creep in and iPads can be damaged as jumpers are pulled from bags or piles of books loaded into lockers. The IT Helpdesk can give sound advice on which cases have provided the best protection for the rigours of a school day.

As always please contact me should you wish to discuss any items further.

The next major event in DESTINATIONS is the week of work experience. We wish all students an enjoyable week as for many it is their first taste of the working world. Work expe-rience provides our students with some valuable insight into the workplace and many return reinvigorated with chosen pathways or re-energised with new ideas to explore! The vast majority of our Year 10 students have now found a host employer for their week of Work Experience June 16 to June 20 which is the last week of the semester. Students are urged to pay close attention to student notices over coming days for final notifications and guidance regarding the organistion and their conduct during work experience. Students should expect a visit while they are at their host employer from a member of the College staff.

Before they start, students will receive some final tips and advice for work experience. They will also receive a WORK EXPERIENCE DIARY to keep throughout the week. This di-ary will be handed in to Learning Advisors on TUESDAY 15 JULY. On completion of their work experience all students are asked to send a THANK YOU letter or card ( even a phone call) to thank their host employer. (Emails are not recommended.)

As part of the career and job researching process, each Year 10 student will shortly receive their own copy of the 2014 JOB GUIDE. In future learning advisor sessions students will find out how to make maximum use of this invaluable guide which is especially written for school students to help them map out career pathways. This is es-pecially relevant as early on next term students will consider and select the senior subjects they will study in Years 11 and 12. All students will study Maths and English and four other elective subjects. All subjects are two year courses so we do expect students to consider their course of study very carefully. To help them in this process Year 10 and Year 9 students and parents are invited to the SENIOR STUDIES EXPO on Tuesday 5 August from 5pm until 7pm in the RBT. This event will give students and parents the opportunity to find out more about the subjects on offer and career pathways. Shortly after this event, students will be asked to submit their subject selections online. Following subject selections, Year 10 students will have the opportunity to complete their Career Plan which will map out their options throughout their senior schooling and beyond.

UniversitiesYear 12 students planning to apply to Bond University are reminded that the online application is now open - the deadline for scholarship applications is the end of July. Griffith University GUESTS ProgramThrough the Griffith University Early Start to Tertiary Studies (GUESTS) Program, motivated students can study a univer-sity course (subject) while at high school. To apply for the GUESTS program, students do need to be achieving at an A or B standard.

Current Year 12 students have until Friday, 30th May to apply for Semester 2 (July) intake. Year 11 students con-sidering GUESTS for semester one of 2015 will have until the end of September to apply. For more information and to apply, visit: http://www.griffith.edu.au/pathways/guests-

felt experiences in these areas ensures that we ‘walk the talk’ and that students are also given meaningful learning opportunities, experiences which build their integrity and build commitment to servant leadership.

From the Director of Learning and TeachingExam timetables have been issued to the Year 11 and 12 students. Exam study leave begins on THURSDAY 12 JUNE until 12:40pm FRIDAY 20 JUNE. ALL Year 11 and 12 stu-dents will be dismissed at 12:40pm on FRIDAY JUNE 20.

Due to their week of Work Experience, Year 10 students can expect their exams to take place in lessons during the later part of week seven and during week eight. Exams for individual Year 10 subjects can be found on the Year 10 ASSESSMENT calendars.

Year 10 DestinationsParents of Year 10 students will be aware that a key feature of the Year 10 curriculum is the ongoing comprehensive careers program called DESTINATIONS aimed at preparing our students for their senior schooling, tertiary education and the workplace.
