Time flies when you are engaged in the process of learning! As I write, our Year 12 students are sitting the first of their QCS tests. This year we started a new tradition with our Year 11 students cooking breakfast for the 12s as a symbol of their support and care for them as they enter these important testing days. The Year 12 students were well-prepared and their results will reflect a cumulative effort of their learning experiences across P-12. Nonetheless, I’d like to acknowledge Mrs Christina Wrigley (Head of Teaching and Learning) and the Year 12 teachers for their tireless efforts towards assisting students to achieve their personal best.

As this is the final bulletin for Term 3 what is to follow relates to the key dates and information for the last two weeks of Term 3 and the start of Term 4.

Best wishes to our Year 7 students who are leaving for Canberra on Monday 16 September. They will undoubt-edly enjoy soaking up all of the incredible learning experi-ences on offer in our Nation’s Capital.

The final day of classes for Term 3 is Thursday 19 Septem-ber. Academic Progress Reports for students in Years 7-12 will be posted home in Week 10. Parents are encouraged to discuss this report with their child and to help him/her to set goals for the start of Term 4.

Middle School Administration and (Sick Bay) Reloca-tion From the start of next term, Middle School Administration will be located next to the Junior School Administration in the upper level of that building. This term we appointed a College Nurse (Mrs Corinna Sills), and over the break, work will be completed on the new P-12 Health Centre, located on the ground level of the Junior and Middle Administration block next to the Village Green. All students P-12 who are unwell are to be collected from the Health Centre.

Students are to wear casual dress (abiding by the casual dress rules that apply on Mufti-Days as listed in the College diary). Students will be based at school on Monday prepar-ing for their Service-Learning projects and need to arrive by 8:30am to meet in the Theatre. Tuesday to Thursday, the students will be undertaking their Service-Learning projects. The Edge program for all Year 9 boys begins on Monday 14 October.

Year 12 FormalOur Year 12s will be celebrating their formal on Saturday 19 October at the Royal Pines Resort. Parents are invited to attend pre-dinner drinks starting at 5.30pm.

Staffing UpdatesMr Stephen Wildbur has accepted a position as Head of Technologies at Trinity Lutheran College from the start of Term 4. I would like to thank Stephen for his dedicated work and leadership of our Design Technology area over the past 6 years and wish him well in his future endeavors at Trinity. Mr Robert Wecker will be Acting Head of De-sign Technology for Term 4. Mr Arnold Appelhof has also indicated that he will be leaving St Andrews at the end of the year and I would like to thank him for the work he has done with our German students this year. We are in the process of finding suitable replacements for both members of staff.

Whole College PhotoAs part of our 20th Anniversary Celebrations, a whole of College photo was taken on Thursday 1 August. The photos have arrived at the College and they will be sent home, on approval, with the oldest member of each family by Friday so that you may decide whether or not you wish to purchase a copy at a cost of $69.50 (incl GST). If you wish to purchase the photograph, simply retain it and this amount will be included on your Term 4 Fee Statement. If you decide not to purchase it, please return the photo-graph, undamaged in its container to the Main College Reception by Tuesday 17th September. This will enable our Staff to account for all photos distributed. As the College is unlikely to take another whole of Col-lege photo for many years we would encourage you to give careful consideration to the purchase of this photo. It represents a significant milestone in the history of the Col-lege and your son or daughter’s educational journey. I hope that you and your child will enjoy this photograph for many years to come.

Separate AssembliesResearch into the adolescent of today has revealed a strong need for young men and women to be mentored by those of the same gender. With this in mind, Mr Nelson and I ran separate assemblies for boys and girls in the Senior School where we could discuss issues specific to each gender. Dur-ing that time the girls and their female teachers discussed what it meant to be an Independent Woman of Substance (IWOS). We acknowledged who those women were and why they probably showed a lot of resilience as well as what it means to be resilient. Resilience and my favourite variation of that, GRIT, have been strong themes during Learning Advisor lessons this term. I shared some of my favourite pieces of wisdom: that life is tough. Resilience is a skill which can be learned. At the end of the day we all need at times to, ‘get up, dress up and show up’. Girls were

Page 3: Middle / Senior School Bulletin Issue 12, 6 September 2013

also asked to name up to 5 women of substance they could go to for support and, as we hoped, many named their mums, sisters, a trusted family friend or teacher. However, the most delightful part of the assembly was watching the girls share with each other and watching them‘bop’ to the wise words of Katy Perry’s Firework song as they left the Assembly.

Time Management ConcernsAt times over the semester our students struggle to manage their time and meet deadlines. While we recognise that on occasion students do get behind and for those legitimate ocassions we have in place a very fair extension policy that is available through Mrs Wrigley. However, I have concerns that a number of students fail to plan and as a result take time off school to complete tasks/assignments. This is not an effective time management strategy and I would like to encourage parents not to condone the use of this as a strategy on a regular basis. The reasons for this include; it does not teach them effective time management strategies, it is not teaching them the values that any business or em-ployer will have in regards to deadlines, they get behind in other subjects when classes are missed and sadly, peers fast lose respect for those students who regularly make this a part of their time management strategy. We have available for all our students assessment calendars, term manage-ment plans and weekly planners and LAG teachers regularly discuss time management strategies. of these stratergies among the most effective are; start a task as soon as you get it, break the task into smaller bite-sized chunks, review notes on a nightly basis, ask for help, attend lunch-time and after school tutorials, spend 2-3 hours on homework most nights of the week, turn off your phone/ipad/Facebook etc when you are revising or doing important tasks and be prepared to work hard as your education is your job at this point in time.

Reminder:Any students who completed the 40 Hour Famine or took a booklet to participate are reminded that they must bring in their money and booklet ASAP. This is now two weeks overdue and is causing quite a bit of extra work for our student organisers who by now should be fully focused on their assessments. Parent support in ensuring this happens would be greatly appreciated.

Congratulations:• Luke Silveira, one of our Year 12 students who was

asked by Dr Naidoo to present to the Year 11 Physics students on Quantum Physics. Luke’s presentation was of such high quality that Dr Naidoo felt the younger physicists would benefit from seeing his work.

• Good luck to Kane Richards as he travels to London to compete in the World Triathlon Championships

• To the many Year 11’s who came in early on Tuesday and Wednesday to prepare breakfast for the Year 12’s as they readied themselves for two days of QCS testing. Also a big thank you to Mrs Washington, Mr Maessen, Miss Duncan and Mr Edwards who gave up their time to assist.

Many parents have queried if we still produce an assess-ment calendar. These can be downloaded from the front page of Moodle for each year level. All students should have these downloaded. Can I strongly urge parents to do

the same and to place it on the fridge or your child’s bed-room door so everyone knows what is coming up in terms of assessment, exams and excursions. Moodle link - http://moodle.salc.qld.edu.au/

MS EXPO and Subject Selection.Thank you to all those families who attended the Middle School Expo a couple of weeks ago. I hope that you had an opportunity to discuss potential subject choices with relevant staff on the evening as well as engage with the work being done by Middle School students. A reminder that elective selection forms for 2014 have not yet been dis-tributed and will not be distributed until next term. Should you have any questions about the electives on offer or the structure of our ‘core’ subject areas then please do not hesitate to contact me and discuss further.

End of TermThe last week of term promises to be a wonderful expe-rience for our three year levels. The Year 7s (including myself) will be visiting Canberra, the Year 8s will be expe-riencing ‘The Real Game’ and a medieval culminating day, and the Year 9s will take their first steps towards The Edge. I look forward to the learning that will result from these experiences and the opportunities that they provide for interaction beyond the classroom. However, the end of the term is also a time when the educational practices devel-oped through the term come to fruition.

Throughout the term there have been many Middle School students availing themselves of the tutorials available in the CRC in order to consolidate their learning. My general belief is that fifteen minutes of complex work explained at school is better than an hour of puzzlement at home. We hope that our students are learning the valuable skills of effective time management and slowly implementing these

How Children SucceedIn Paul Tough’s recent book ‘How Children Succeed: Grit, Curiosity and the hidden power of Character’ he furthered the discussion on developing character strengths in young people. His focus was partly on schools and curriculum and partly on parents and their responses to children struggling with adversity. His comments were inspiring and challeng-ing for me as a teacher and as a parent.

With the upcoming interim reports being written now, I wonder what conversations will happen between parents and their children and how character might feature in those discussions. I wonder about the mysterious interaction be-tween school, culture, family and a young person’s free will, such that many young people will form up stronger charac-ters strengths and the process will be an important part of their development. Discussions in some of my classes have focused young people on how they have been overcoming perceived limits this term, how they have been practicing greater self-control and which of them are growing in their sense of optimism regarding future learning experiences. Though it takes time to build a shared understanding about the importance of these characteristics, it is pleasing that many of the St Andrews students are recognizing their significance.

Congratulations to our MLTAQ Speech Competition com-petitors who represented the College at Griffith University on Sunday 18th August. Kye Fielder and Leilani Frost in Year 7 learnt a speech of 16 lines in Japanese by heart and answered questions about it in Japanese afterwards. Paris McKay-Holley (pictured) in Year 9 wrote learnt a lengthy speech of over a page and answered questions about it also to the Japanese judges. Paris achieved first place for our school’s division against a field of approximately 25 other contestants. Well done everyone on your excellent Nihongo, your perseverance and diligence in taking on such a challenge. We are proud of you all.Omedetou!

into their daily routines. In an increasingly busy world it is important that our children still have the opportunities to play and engage with family on the weekends while feeling confident that they have the necessary skills to complete any homework tasks. Should your child’s ‘balance’ be out of kilter then I encourage you to contact their LAG teacher and have a chat about how they are using their time at the College. Alternatively, I am more than happy to discuss this with you so please feel free to contact me at the Middle School Office.

Countdown to Googa and Service Learning“The Edge” program for all Year 9 students starts on the first day of Term 4. This long-anticipated program involves a four week process, split into same gender groupings for service learning, outdoor education and reflection. This powerful experience further strengthens the independence skills of our young students and serves as a right of pas-sage from Middle School, where they have been safe and secure for the last three years, and are now on “the edge” between Middle and Senior School.

The first part of this transformative journey involves attend-ing non-profit organizations where the aim of the experi-ence is to consolidate the idea that hands are for helping. Students are asked to serve a community need and provide the labour needed to facilitate the organization. For ex-ample, at some local op shops, students are needed to sort and price items, clean shelves, move furniture, or work the cash register. At placements involving aged care facilities, students are often involved in helping residents play games like lawn bowls or bingo. Sometimes students accompany the elderly on shopping trips where they reach items on high shelves, push the cart, help carry and put away the groceries. The many organizations we serve are meant to provide students with varied experiences that they can share in a bid to find ways of being helpful in their homes, neighborhoods, and communities.

The second part of the “Edge” journey involves attend-ing the two week camp at the gloriously beautiful Googa Outdoor Education Centre located near Blackbutt. The students participate in safe risk activities like tree climbing, sugar gliding, challenge games, hiking, pioneering, and more. In the dorms, the students work together to wash, cook, clean, chop wood, weed the garden, and feed the cattle and chickens. Teamwork and relationship building is an essential focus to Googa as it serves the students in bonding together before heading to Senior School. The students often reflect upon these foundation experiences and the strengthening of relationships at this camp as they build up and support each other throughout their second-ary school endeavours.

The third and final leg of this self-discovery journey involves a week of introspection and reflection. The culminating activity involves a presentation for parents to showcase student growth and development. Students work together during the week to produce mission statements that will help frame and guide them like a map as they navigate the deep and challenging waters of their senior schooling. This four week encounter enriches the lives of those who experience it. As not all learning experiences can be done in a classroom, the Year Nine “Edge” program provides a well-rounded culmination of Middle School that gives students the best chance to start their senior years with, confidence, camaraderie and hope.

Born to knit campaign 2013Last year, Save the Children received 4,844 blankets for children in need programs across Australia and over-seas. 37 of these blankets were made with love by our St Andrews community.

It is time to start knitting again. Thank you to our knitters who continued through the summer; this has provided a head start on the blanket tally for this year. Please enlist your friends, family and neighbours to knit or crochet blankets. Blankets will keep children warm and help to save lives. Save the Children request the size to be 80cm square. The next P & F meeting is the AGM which is held in Term 4. All positions will be open for nomination, so if you need any information on any of the roles, please contact one of the members of the current P & F.

The AGM will be held in Term 4 on Wednesday 6th Novem-ber at 7pm. Please mark it in your calendar and try to come along.

Funding and ProjectsThe P & F has provided the College with funds for remov-able AFL goal posts for the top oval, which we hope will be enjoyed by many for years to come. A new sound system for the MPH has been approved and should be installed by Term 4. Banners which will encourage student’s creativ-ity and sense of wellbeing in the College have also been purchased.

During the September School holidays a second Bus Shelter will be built which has also been solely funded by the P & F.

A climbing wall for the MPH has been approved and e-readers for the school, which includes over 200 book titles for use by all students.

A further donation has also gone towards funding a Lego Robotic Club which we are sure will benefit many children.

These are only a few examples of suggestions from parents attending P & F meetings which have come to fruition. Another important reason why you should get involved and have input into how the funds you help raise are put towards projects within the school.

Further information on the Grandstand should be available at the AGM. Plans have been prepared, and the College is awaiting quotes to determine the cost. Approval for the expenditure will be sought at future P & F meetings. Fete updateThe success of the Fete could not be achieved without the contribution of the many stallholders and volunteers.
