Port Stephens and the Great Lakes are a wonderland for all things marine and the perfect destinations for boating, fishing or a relaxing houseboat holiday. Port Stephens and the lakes network around Forster are home to some of the best seafood you could imagine – fresh oysters, luscious crab and mouth watering fish. And there is no better accompaniment than one of the increasing number of local quality boutique wines and beers.

This coastline is also famous for being the ideal place to witness the annual whale migration. There are many excellent vantage points all along the coast between Port Stephens and Coffs Harbour. And if you want to get even closer to nature you can cruise with the dolphins all year round.

For natural beauty of a different kind you may prefer to explore the ancient forests in the Taree hinterland or the majesty of the Comboyne Plateau rising high above the Manning and Hastings valleys. Another branch off the highway further north brings you to the historic Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks and the amazing Smoky Cape Lighthouse. Or turn west into the hinterland between Kempsey and the Nambucca Valley into the classic country of Slim Dusty’s homelands. Make sure you stop for a refreshing ale at the Pub With No Beer or explore the delightful heritage village of Bowraville.

Then there is Bellingen, nestled at the base of the Dorrigo Plateau and famous for its friendly and creative community. Further up the scenic Bellinger Valley dramatic escarpments with areas of lush rainforest and dramatic waterfalls create the landscape for the World Heritage listed Dorrigo National Park. All of this clings to the cliffs which are the backdrop overlooking the magnificent Coffs Coast. At its heart is Coffs Harbour, an icon of Australian holidays not just for the Big Banana, but the diversity of beaches, trails, and fascinating villages, which make up this northern tip of the Mid North Coast.

Discover the stunning drive east from Tamworth down the Hastings Valley on the Oxley Highway to Port Macquarie or take in the awe inspiring views from one of the rest points on the escarpment of the Waterfall Way between Armidale and the Coffs Coast.

Port Stephens was first noted by Europeans in May 1770 when Captain James Cook referred to Port Stephens in his log as "an opening forming a bay".

He went on to describe; "Wind southerly in the day and in the night westerly, a gentle breeze and clear weather. At 4pm past at a distance of one mile a low rocky point which I named Point Stephens... on the north side of this point is an inlet which I called Port Stephens that appears from the masthead to be sheltered from all winds".

Great Lakes With tranquil lakes, uncrowded beaches and lush hinterland, the Great Lakes is full of unspoilt natural scenery.

From the forest to the sea...With 145 km of coastline stretching from Tea Gardens to Blackhead, the Great Lakes area offers pristine waterways, subtropical rainforests, national parks and nature reserves. A few hours’ drive north from Sydney, you’ll find beaches, bays and tidal lakes perfect for surfing, swimming, kayaking, boating and fishing, while the Manning Valley’s historic townships provide year-round interest.

Holiday havensThe hardest decision you’ll have to make on your Great Lakes holiday is where to stay. While Forster-Tuncurry,

actually two towns linked by a bridge across Wallis Lake, is always popular, the many tranquil townships scattered throughout the area all have their own unique charm.

Twenty minutes south of Forster is Pacific Palms, named after the area’s cabbage tree palms. It’s a good place from where to explore Booti Booti National Park, Wallis and Smiths lakes, and the sensational surf beaches of Boomerang and Blueys. Seal Rocks, 40 minutes’ drive south of Forster, is the ideal destination if you like bushwalking, surfing or scuba diving.

Seal Rocks got its name from the Australian fur seals’ favourite sunning spot, which is on the rugged rocks just across the water from Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, a short walk from the town and past a spectacular blowhole.

Wingham Akoostik Music FestivalRelax refresh and rewind in the Manning Valley’s natural beauty over the weekend of October 19, 20 and 21. The festival opens on Friday evening with screenings of short films from the Forster Film Festival. Over 30 artists provide entertainment across the two days across two stages amongst food and market stalls that boast hand made and hand grown goodies. You too can play in the Biggest Band in the Land world record challenge, bring along any stringed instrument, or your djembe drum to take part in the closing event on Sunday afternoon.

The Communities of Tea Gardens and Hawks Nest are celebrating the Myall River Festival on October 26th and 27th on the banks of the picturesque Myall River.

Friday night kicks off with fun activities like flinging thongs, free entertainment and Fireworks over the water at around 8pm.

On Saturday it is a mass of markets with over 100 stalls and three free entertainment stages. There’s music with Driftwood and Ken Scott an opportunity to be a part of our famous duck race on the river and you can kick up your heels at the Boot Scooting on the main drag. Check out the Classic Cars from the team that bring you Motorfest and enjoy the great festival atmosphere.

For the kids there are camel rides, free animal shows, amusements and so much more with a range of activities including face painting, amusements and much more.

Whale watchingat Port Macquarie just keeps getting betterWhale watching on Australia’s Holiday Coast is by far the region’s biggest winter tourist attraction.

Majestic Humpbacks on their northern migration pass within 2km of the Tacking Point lighthouse at Port Macquarie. This is where expectant females slow down or rest as they feel the ocean temperature rise to above 18 degrees, knowing that they can safely give birth in the North Coast’s warmer sub tropical waters. Last year 26 baby humpbacks were seen by Cruise Adventures as they travelled north from Port Macquarie.

The males and others on the other hand generally keep a steady pace, blowing robustly and ploughing along towards the mating grounds further north. Seeing these gentle giants surfing the northbound swell is spectacular.

The first European in the Wauchope area was Surveyor John Oxley who named Mount Seaview and the Hastings River (after Lord Warren Hasting, Governor of India) as he passed through the area in 1818.

By 1820 cedar was being cut in the district and in 1821 Governor Lachlan Macquarie established Port Macquarie as a penal colony. By 1826 there were numerous experiments with sugar cane along the banks of the Hastings River.

In 1828 a number of land grants were made along the Hastings River. In 1836 the village of Wauchope came into existence. Captain Robert Andrew Wauch (he had dropped ‘ope’ from the end of his name as a result of a family dispute) paid a deposit on 760 acres on King Creek.

The property was named “Wauchope” and it was from this the town would

eventually grow.

Today Wauchope is a beautiful town endowed with a traditional timber-milling heritage. Wonderful places of historic importance are located throughout the town and in the surrounding areas a must see destination for all.

Trial Bay Gaol which opened in 1886, as a works prison and utilised in World War One as a German Interment Camp closed in 1918, is located in the Arakoon State Conservation Area just 5 kilometres east of the coastal town of South West Rocks.

Walks range from an easy 10 minutes up to difficult, 4 hours. There is a licensed restaurant in the park open from 8am to 3pm.

National Parks and Wildlife Service runs qualified discovery programs throughout the area, evening tours of the Gaol are run on Tuesdays and Thursdays during NSW school holidays.

The guided tours last for approximately 1.5 hours. Self-guided tours of the Gaol are also available between 9.00am -4.00pm daily.

Coffs Harbour is the regional centre for Tourism, Commerce and Industry. Carobana is a real working factory. Most of our production is for wholesale and we manufacture to order. This makes every week different and whatever is happening on the day you get to see. The best time to visit is mornings from 10am to about 2.30pm. Best days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, these are production days. Thursdays and Fridays are despatch days and Saturdays are just the shop.

Carobana has been open to the public for just 19 years, but making our confectionery for nearly 30 years. Our tree lined drive brings visitors to the open park-like space of our grounds, where picnics and other activities are held. The covered, table area is used by most visitors who enjoy sitting with a cuppa or a snack to watch the local wildlife, or use the new bbq facilities.

Once inside the factory, the retail shop offers a range of sweets to tempt most taste buds. Honeycombs and brittles are the most popular lines (we use a tonne of sugar every 8 days). The coated lines give the biggest choice and tastings are available.

Watch the honeycomb being made in the kitchen and you get to taste a slither of fresh honeycomb right from the 5kg slab. If the coating line is in production, again close up watching and a little taste.
