Reward Your Senses at Sea AcresIt’s 9 am and Sea Acres Rainforest Centre boardwalk has just opened for the day. The air is fresh with morning dew and the scent of ancient Bolwarra blends with the primeval smells of this pristine rainforest. Above the forest floor on the elevated boardwalk we sense the intricate web of life that surrounds us and makes the sub-tropical coastal rainforest at Sea Acres unique. Sea Acres is operated by the NSW National Parks and Wildlife Service (NPWS) and includes the popular Rainforest Café, run by French chef Jean Louis and wife Cherie. There is a gift and souvenir shop and the Centre is open from 9 am to 4.30 pm each day. Take advantage of the guided rainforest tours included in the entry fee or explore at your own pace. To enter the rainforest is to step into another world. It’s cool, the light is dim and the vegetation lusciously green. Catbirds calling, giant strangler figs, lace fungi, and freshly fallen fruits from animals feeding high in the canopy - the rainforest rewards the senses. About two thirds of the way around the boardwalk, glimpses of the ocean through the forest remind us we are close to the sea – Miners Beach is just 200 metres away. Kempsey Speciosum Spectacular 2012 1-2 September

Dendrobium Speciosum Spectacular

Photo: Bill Dobson

To all fans of the king orchid (often referred to as a Sydney rock lily), this specialist show with a focus on these plants is on again this year and should not be missed. This wonderful Australian orchid (botanical name Dendrobium speciosum) makes a striking landscape feature plant in the right situation and in a good year for flowering produces a wonderful floral display and head of scent.

In fact, this orchid is a species complex with nine varieties and as such has attracted a large number of people who collect desirable propagations and line bred examples. To see a mass flowering of a large number of these plants is something that must be experienced. This year’s show to be held as usual in Kempsey (see advertisement and locality map) is now a well established annual event. Other features of the show include displays of other Australian orchid species and hybrids. Many of these

plants are of specimen size which makes for a very impressive display.

As in past years, food and soft drinks will be on sale. There will also be a large number of speciosum plants for sale where the quality and breeding of these plants is second to none. If you are in the area, this show should certainly be seen even if you don’t grow and collect orchids.

Port Stephens and the Great Lakes are a wonderland for all things marine and the perfect destinations for boating, fishing or a relaxing houseboat holiday. Port Stephens and the lakes network around Forster are home to some of the best seafood you could imagine – fresh oysters, luscious crab and mouth watering fish. And there is no better accompaniment than one of the increasing number of local quality boutique wines and beers.

This coastline is also famous for being the ideal place to witness the annual whale migration. There are many excellent vantage points all along the coast between Port Stephens and Coffs Harbour. And if you want to get even closer to nature you can cruise with the dolphins all year round.

For natural beauty of a different kind you may prefer to explore the ancient forests in the Taree hinterland or the majesty of the Comboyne Plateau rising high above the Manning and Hastings valleys. From here you can head to Port Macquarie, which offers a mix of cosmopolitan buzz and a laid back seaside feel. Where else could you take a stroll along coastal rainforests right on a beach but at Sea Acres in Port Macquarie?

Another branch off the highway further north brings you to the historic Trial Bay Gaol at South West Rocks and the amazing Smoky Cape Lighthouse. Or turn west into the hinterland between Kempsey and the Nambucca Valley into the classic country

of Slim Dusty’s homelands. Make sure you stop for a refreshing ale at the Pub With No Beer or explore the delightful heritage village of Bowraville.

Then there is Bellingen, nestled at the base of the Dorrigo Plateau and famous for its friendly and creative community. Further up the scenic Bellinger Valley dramatic escarpments with areas of lush rainforest and dramatic waterfalls create the landscape for the World Heritage listed Dorrigo National Park. All of this clings to the cliffs which are the backdrop overlooking the magnificent Coffs Coast. At its heart is Coffs Harbour, an icon of Australian holidays not just for the Big

The Mid North Coast journey Banana, but the diversity of beaches, trails, and fascinating villages, which make up this northern tip of the Mid North Coast.

Discover the stunning drive east from Tamworth down the Hastings Valley on the Oxley Highway to Port Macquarie or take in the awe inspiring views from one of the rest points on the escarpment of the Waterfall Way between Armidale and the Coffs Coast.

You can also fly and drive your way around the Mid North Coast. It can now easily be discovered by flying into any one of three major airports in the region with services to Melbourne and Brisbane as well as Sydney. Plan your trip around Newcastle Airport near Port Stephens, Port Macquarie in the centre of the Mid North Coast or Coffs Harbour Airport in the north. The choice is yours.

Port Stephens was first noted by Europeans in May 1770 when Captain James Cook referred to Port Stephens in his log as "an opening forming a bay".

He went on to describe; "Wind southerly in the day and in the night westerly, a gentle breeze and clear weather. At 4pm past at a distance of one mile a low rocky point which I named Point Stephens... on the north side of this point is an inlet which I called Port Stephens that appears from the masthead to be sheltered from all winds".

The twin towns of Tea Gardens/Hawks Nest lie at the mouth of the Myall River and reflect the areas relaxed lifestyle with a sense of peace and tranquility. The towns and surrounds offer a special mix of accommodation and activities.

With coastal themed cafes, galleries and public art this is just the place to get off the highway, unwind and have that very special holiday. At the heart of the Myall Coast is the Myall Lakes

National Park, one of the most visited in NSW. It is a spectacular blend of lakes, coastal forests, pristine beaches and an extensive dune system offering a truly natural experience.

Great Lakes With tranquil lakes, uncrowded beaches and lush hinterland, the Great Lakes is full of unspoilt natural scenery.

From the forest to the sea...With 145 km of coastline stretching from Tea Gardens to Blackhead, the Great Lakes area offers pristine waterways, subtropical rainforests, national parks and nature reserves. A few hours’ drive north from Sydney, you’ll find beaches, bays and tidal lakes perfect for surfing, swimming, kayaking, boating and fishing, while the Manning Valley’s historic townships provide year-round interest.

Holiday havensThe hardest decision you’ll have to make on your Great Lakes holiday is where to stay. While Forster-Tuncurry,

actually two towns linked by a bridge across Wallis Lake, is always popular, the many tranquil townships scattered throughout the area all have their own unique charm.

Twenty minutes south of Forster is Pacific Palms, named after the area’s cabbage tree palms. It’s a good place from where to explore Booti Booti National Park, Wallis and Smiths lakes, and the sensational surf beaches of Boomerang and Blueys. Seal Rocks, 40 minutes’ drive south of Forster, is the ideal destination if you like bushwalking, surfing or scuba diving.

Seal Rocks got its name from the Australian fur seals’ favourite sunning spot, which is on the rugged rocks just across the water from Sugarloaf Point Lighthouse, a short walk from the town and past a spectacular blowhole.

Manning Valley www.midnorthcoastimag.com.au

Covering: Hallidays Point - Diamond Head

The Manning Valley is the place to come for a relaxing break from the crowds, noise and hi-rise buildings. The natural beauty of the valley is

highlighted by the Manning River which lies at the valley’s heart.

Water skiers, rowers, boaties and fishermen enjoy the calm waters of the Manning River, a rare double delta system, in fact the only one in Australia with two entrances to the ocean.

Birdlife is prevalent as they skim the river for food and rest at the water’s edge. Oyster leases deliver succulent ready-to-eat delicacies and fishing co-ops provide local seafood fare.

There is a bounty of local produce for foodies, from wine makers, to National Award winning cafes in the historic town of Wingham.

Experience the legendary Pacific Coast. Travelling from Sydney to Brisbane, the Pacific Coast Touring Routes take you to many amazing destinations on the Mid North Coast of New South

Wales. The Manning Valley is one not to be missed so awaken your spirit with awesome landscapes and natural beauty.

Explore some of the 26 seaside and hinterland townships and you’ll be surprised by the array of produce and options available, from Harrington to Hallidays Point.

Natural assets abound with 9 National Parks and Reserves, 11 stunning beaches spreading across 45 kilometres of pristine coastline and some of the best surfing beaches on the NSW coast.

Surfers ride the perfect wave at Saltwater or walk along Crowdy Bay beach and enjoy the commanding views around the Valley.

Ellenborough Falls, the second longest single drop waterfall in the southern hemisphere, is on Tourist Drive 8 which is a scenic drive through timbered country north west of Wingham linking Taree to Port Macquarie via a series of natural attractions. It’s a great opportunity to get into the bush with a superb range of reserves, parks and picnic areas along the way.

At the Falls you can take a gentle 10 minute stroll to the Knoll for spectacular views and photo opportunities or for the more adventurous, take the walk to the bottom of the valley but be aware there are 641 steps on your climb back to the top! You can drive from Wingham to the Falls in approximately 45 minutes however there are 15km of unsealed road from Bobin to the Falls so please drive to the conditions of the unsealed road.

If you would like to stay in Elands, Cudgerie Little House and Tirrintippin Farmstay provide accommodation near the Falls. Continue through to Comboyne, a further 20 minutes, and this road can take you through to Wauchope and Port Macquarie for a full day trip. Tourist Drive 8 takes in the towns and villages of Taree, Wingham, Marlee, Bobin, Elands, Comboyne, Bybarra and ends at Wauchope on the Oxley Highway. Due to 36kms of unsealed road from Bobin to Comboyne, the drive is not suitable for motorists towing caravans, however these can be left at Wingham Showground for a nominal fee. The drive takes you through the heritage listed town of Wingham, first settled in 1853, with its many historical buildings and museums.

Ideally situated at the mouth of the Hastings River and the blue Pacific Ocean, Port Macquarie is a water lovers paradise. 15 pristine beaches, most of them patrolled, line the coast from Port Macquarie south to the Camden Haven. Enjoy the coastal walks, surfing, sail boarding, swimming, fishing, whale watching, and even camel rides. Many beaches feature barbecue facilities and playgrounds.

The European settlement of Port Macquarie was established in 1821, three years after John Oxley reached the region by trekking down the Hastings River from the New England area. It is one of the oldest penal settlements outside of Sydney. Many early structures still stand today, along with a range of museums and interpretive centres, ideally suited to the history buff.

Stretching from the rugged escarpments and lush pastures of the Comboyne Plateau to the unspoilt

beaches, rocky headlands and stunning views of the coastal strip between Bonny Hills and Diamond Head, the Camden Haven is within a 30 minute drive south of Port Macquarie.

The Camden Haven is renowned for its fishing and beaches, National Parks, State Forests, and outdoor lifestyle. Catch blackfish at Northern Breakwall, pick up a mud crab or two on Queens Lake or take a deep sea fishing charter; discover the rich fauna and flora in Kattang Nature Reserve and don’t miss magnificent North Brother Mountain. This region is a birdwatchers and bush walkers paradise.

Whale watchingat Port Macquarie just keeps getting betterWhale watching on Australia’s Holiday Coast is by far the region’s biggest winter tourist attraction.

Majestic Humpbacks on their northern migration pass within 2km of the Tacking Point lighthouse at Port Macquarie. This is where expectant females slow down or rest as they feel the ocean temperature rise to above 18 degrees, knowing that they can safely give birth in the North Coast’s warmer sub tropical waters. Last year 26 baby humpbacks were seen by Cruise Adventures as they travelled north from Port Macquarie.

The males and others on the other hand generally keep a steady pace, blowing robustly and ploughing along towards the mating grounds further north. Seeing these gentle giants surfing the northbound swell is spectacular.

Port Macquarie Cruise Adventures is the longest established whale watching cruise boat operator at Port Macquarie with 6,000 trips logged so far. All vessels are powered by quiet, economical 4-stroke outboards and carry a maximum of 12 passengers to sea.

Discovery - A 12 metre fast catamaran, suitable for all ages and most weather

conditions. She is an ex-police force vessel which has been perfectly refitted for whale watching.

Whalewatchers can spread out along one side on the boat for perfect front row viewing and photography. Discovery gives you a quiet, personal and whale-friendly experience on a big boat even in the rain.

Apollo 1 and 2 - Two red 8.5 metre Naiad RIBs (rigid inflatable boats). These 2 vessels give you the cream of close & personal whale watching experiences and are definitely the fastest and most stable vessels on the open sea. Whales love red boats.

Gemini RIB rides to the whales. This is a fast but easy ride to the whales on an eco-friendly supercharged 8.5 metre RIB. This is not for the faint hearted or small children but safe and stable as a whale watching platform.

Cruise Adventures has won the prestigious regional tourism awards for environmental tourism. Part of the enterprise is the Dolphin & Whale Watching Centre, a front line ticket office promoting environmental awareness and protection of whales, dolphins and marine life. This eco-tourism business is now firmly entrenched as part of the global billion dollar whale watching industry. Find the centre on the wharf at the north end of Short Street, Port Macquarie.

If you want to stay on dry land, Tacking Point Lighthouse or the coastal headland walking tracks provide perfect whale viewing points.

For people not keen to go in the ocean the 100km of waterways at Port Macquarie is home to bottle nosed dolphins and a variety of marine life. Cruise Adventures also operates 2 shallow draft river cruise boats on dolphin spotting cruises in the river system & wetlands. This is a gentler way to see marine mammals close up. Cruise Adventures eco-cruises are the only cruises to the national park where dolphins, endangered Osprey eagles, kangaroos and koalas are often seen, and visit Oyster World, a working oyster farm.

If you are in the area phone the Dolphin & Whale Watch Hotline at Port Macquarie on 1300 555 890 for more information or a whale or dolphin update. Whale & dolphin cruises depart up to 20 times daily from early morning to sunset.

Wauchope

The first European in the Wauchope area was Surveyor John Oxley who named Mount Seaview and the Hastings River (after Lord Warren Hasting, Governor of India) as he passed through the area in 1818.

By 1820 cedar was being cut in the district and in 1821 Governor Lachlan Macquarie established Port Macquarie as a penal colony. By 1826 there were numerous experiments with sugar cane along the banks of the Hastings River.

In 1828 a number of land grants were made along the Hastings River. In 1836

the village of Wauchope came into existence. Captain Robert Andrew Wauch (he had dropped ‘ope’ from the end of his name as a result of a family dispute) paid a deposit on 760 acres on King Creek. The property was named “Wauchope” and it was from this the town would eventually grow.

Today Wauchope is a beautiful town endowed with a traditional timber-milling heritage. Wonderful places of historic importance are located throughout the town and in the surrounding areas a must see destination for all.

Carobana

Carobana is Coffs Harbour’s own working confectionery factory – family owned and operated since 1980

Carobana is a real working factory. Most of our production is for wholesale and we manufacture to order. This makes every week different and whatever is happening on the day you get to see. The best time to visit is mornings from 10am to about 2.30pm. Best days are Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, these are production days. Thursdays and Fridays are despatch days and Saturdays are just the shop.

Carobana has been open to the public for just 19 years, but making our confectionery for nearly 30 years. Our tree lined drive brings visitors to the open park-like space of our grounds, where picnics and other activities are held. The covered, table area is used by most visitors who enjoy sitting with a cuppa or a snack to watch the local wildlife, or use the new bbq facilities.

Once inside the factory, the retail shop offers a range of sweets to tempt most taste buds. Honeycombs and brittles are the most popular lines (we use a tonne of sugar every 8 days). The coated lines give the biggest choice and tastings are available.

Watch the honeycomb being made in the kitchen and you get to taste a slither of fresh honeycomb right from the 5kg slab. If the coating line is in production, again close up watching and a little taste.

For a great walk in the rainforest only 5km from Coffs Harbour, you have to visit Bruxner Park Flora Reserve. In addition to several signposted walking trails, there is also a fantastic lookout point over all of Coffs Harbour – Sealy Lookout – at 310 metres above sea level.

The walking tracks at Bruxner Park are only a 10-minute drive from the CBD, which make them the closest rainforest walks to the Coffs Harbour city centre. These bushwalks are easily accessible that you’ll have no excuse not to go there at least once.

Creek Trail. This one-way trail (approx. 1km, 20-30 mins return) joins the Rainforest Walk at Halfway Creek so it’s easy to combine both walks. You can also walk back via the road and check out The Vincent Tree, one of the biggest flooded gums in NSW.

Korora Lookout Trail. Easy 20-min return walk along a ridge with great views north along the Coffs coastline and towards the Solitary Islands. Starts from the Scenic Drive about 500m from Sealy Lookout. There are no cafés or shops in the area, so bring your own picnic – picnic tables at Halfway Creek and Swans Road Crossing.

High on the New England Tablelands, east of Dorrigo, Cathedral Rock National Park is the perfect place for a relaxing day trip or camping holiday. The park features sub-alpine heathlands, wildflowers, tall eucalypt forests and giant granite tors.

The magnificent granite boulders are the subjects of many photographs, while a scramble to the top of these giant outcrops is rewarded with fantastic views of the surrounding tablelands. At 1584 metres above sea level, nearby Round Mountain is the highest point on the New England Tablelands.

The variety of eucalypts and wildflowers attracts an abundance of birds, including rose robins, flycatchers and pardalotes. Grey kangaroos and swamp wallabies are often seen feeding on the heathland plants and mosses around the Barokee Rest Area in the late afternoon.

Bushwalkers will enjoy exploring the park’s walking tracks. There are four to choose from: Cathedral Rock Track (5.8km circuit/2.5hrs), Woolpacks Rocks (7.4km return/3hrs), Warrigal Track (1km circuit/30mins) and the more serious Barokee – Native Dog Creek (10.4km one way). Secluded camping is available amid tall banksias and eucalypts at Barokee Camping Area while Native Dog Creek Camping Area is a more spacious site, ideal for caravans and trailers. No bookings are required, but overnight camping fees apply.

Things to see and do

• Bushwalking: Choose from four walks, ranging from an easy half-hour stroll to a serious 10km traverse of the National Park.

• Rock-hopping: Scramble to the summit of Cathedral Rock and enjoy magnificent 360 degree views.

• Camping or picnicking: Enjoy an hour, a day or a weekend relaxing at Barokee or Native Dog Camping Area.

• Bird watching: Marvel at the prolific birdlife attracted to the park’s eucalypts and wildflowers.
