Dear Joyce,

How are you? I hope you and your family are in the pink. Recently, I had a great experience. I must share it with you.

I am a member of the Internet Club in my school. Last week, all the members decided to do something nice for the Home of Golden people. Yes, you guessed it! It is an old folks’ home. We visited the place on a Sunday.

The club adviser, Mrs Pala and all the members met early in the morning at school. We prepared food and drinks. We divided ourselves into a few groups to do the activities we had planned. Some of us were to clean up the place, while others would manage the food and drinks. A bunch of us were in charge of entertaining the elderly people in the home. We brought a projector along to entertain them with old and new movies.

We managed to clean up and liven up the place. Everyone enjoyed the goodies we brought with us. It was like a party. Some of my friends even got these elderly people to get up, sing and dance with us. This brought smiles to their sad faces. It was worth all the hard work for us!

Later in the evening, we just sat and talked with the elderly people there. They had a lot of stories to tell. Most of them sad, because many of them were made homeless because their own children neglected them! I promised myself I will never do that to my parents.

Well, Joyce, it’s getting late. I have to pen off now. Hope to hear from you soon!

Your best friend, Marie

Recent studies show that 30 percent of Malaysian school-going teenagers smoke. This is very alarming because it means that three of ten school-going children smoke. The act of smoking is putting a cigarette in your mouth, lighting it and inhaling the smoke. Each time the smoke is inhaled, it cuts off at least five minutes of life from the smoker on the average.

Every cigarette contains some 4000 toxins and carcinogen chemicals that are harmful to the human body. Smoking causes cancer of the lungs, larynx, mouth and bladder. Besides, smoking is also a major contributor to heart disease.

Do not smoke and do not add on to the current statistics of 12 million smokers in Malaysia. Choose to live a healthy life by saying “NO” to smoking.
