Microsoft HoloLens is the world’s first fully untethered, self-contained holographic computer.

It is an augmented reality headset that mixes your physical real world with virtual hologram experiences from around the world by using transparent lenses, spatial sound and an understanding of your surrounding environment.

It is the creation of Microsoft employee, Alex Kidman who also worked on MicroSoftKinect, which is consider the Grandfather of HoloLens.

Multiple cameras and sensors stationed inside the headset.

HOLOLENS TECHNOLOGY

Uses a unity engine for sound which allows sound to change based on the proximity of your objects. The audio is delivered through two small speakers in the headset not microphones, so you can hear the real environment around you.

HOLOLENS TECHNOLOGY

You can grab items off the computer and pull them into the air and control them with your mouse. It has a CPU –Computer Processing Unit, GPU- Graphic Processing Unit and HPU – Holographic Processing Unit.

TEACHING WITH HOLOLENS

Hologram Teaching. Allow teachers to give lessons to students around the world. Students could take a tour of the Egyptian Pyramids, explore careers or visit space.

Holograms look and sound real due to transparent lenses and spatial sound. They can be world-locked so you can walk around them in a physical location.

EDUCATION IMPLICATIONSThe Educational implications are endless. Teachers can use it as a form of educational entertainment to help students out with challenges they face when learning or retaining knowledge. It can be used for medical students to study anatomy online without being in a classroom with real models or cadavers.

FUTURE IMPLICATIONS

Hololens will increase the quality of online teaching dramatically between the student and their learning environment by providing virtual field trips around the world. Students can visit space without traveling on a spaceship.

Online teaching will be a classroom of students from all over the world sitting as holograms at the table together.

SELF REFLECTION ON TECHNOLOGY

This technology will change the minds of instructors that I work with that resist online teaching or learning, because of the of the lack engagement, interpersonal communication or hands on experience. With Microsoft Hololens new ways of teaching will be endless.
