• U.S. EPA Definition: • Detected at low levels in surface water• Concern about impacts on aquatic life• No regulatory standards• Recently ‘discovered’ due to improvements in analysis or

Take-home Messages

1. Plastic pollution is pervasive throughout our aquatic ecosystems (and we didn’t even talk about drinking water!)

2. Plastic pollution has a negative effect on ecosystem health (and we didn’t even talk about the problems associated with litter!)

3. There is no one cause of plastic pollution, so we need to work together to develop solutions to this global problem.
