Some of health care’s best are right down the road.

There’s no assessment for hospitals more important than patient outcomes. So we’re proud to be recognized once again for Key Quality Measures by The Joint Commission, a distinction earned by just 8 Kansas hospitals for 2012. Our surgical care — from general surgery to specialties like orthopedics, ENT, plastic surgery and podiatry — received special notice for “outstanding performance.”

You don’t have to travel far for quality hospital care. The surgeons at Miami County Medical Center are at the top of their profession and they’re focused on a single specialty: you.

UNITED WAYServing Miami County for more than 30 years

My Father’s House helps rural homeless get back on their feetBy Jay L. Preston, President/CEO, My Father’s House Community ServicesPastor, Grace Revolution Church of the Nazarene

My Father’s House Community Services is a non-profi t founded in 2003 for the purpose of serving the homeless in Miami County and the surround-ing area. Transitional housing and many supportive services are offered to help people become more successful in maintaining permanent housing. Once a Transitional Housing Grant through the United States Department of Housing and Urban Development was secured, operations began in January 2006. With this funding, My Father’s House could include Miami and Linn counties in its service area. The budget was funded in the amount of $270,000 renewable annually. Each year, My Father’s House must provide matching funds in the amount of $63,000 in order to access the grant. In a small, rural area, that can be a formidable challenge. When the United Way fi rst considered a proposal to partner with My Father’s House to help secure some of those funds, the fl edging organiza-tion was capable, but inexperienced and had little track record of service provision. But the United Way had keen insight into the opportunity to fund this unique and necessary service for our community. For several years now, the United Way has helped to provide a portion of the matching funds required by the grant. The organization saw an opportunity to establish a new era of services to the rural homeless in Kansas – a population which was nearly invisible at that time, but of signifi cant size. The homeless were and remain our neighbors, friends and family. Of equal importance to the funds provided was the effect the news of the United Way’s funding had on the efforts to raise even more dollars. Be-cause the United Way is a funding agency of both local and national scope, it gives organizations, like My Father’s House, a legitimacy in the eyes of new funding sources. Locally, it can determine if there is a legitimate need for a service, and if an organization can meet that need. Because of this and the nationwide stature of the United Way, that support becomes a source of confi dence for other organizations considering funding. United Way’s partnership was important to fi nding new donors as it was in its outright fi nancial support. Now that My Father’s House has two HUD grants and has expanded its service area to six counties, the support the United Way provides continues to play a key role in its success. There really is nothing like the United Way and the service it brings to a community. And our local United Way is among the best that have worked with My Father’s House. The board is comprised of hard-working individuals, who not only raise funds, but consistently meet their funding goals. Our community is enhanced greatly by funding to the many organizations present in Miami County who, like My Father’s House, help when our friends and neighbors need it the most. For more information about My Father’s House Community Services, its services and opportunities for funding and volunteering, please visit the website (www.my-fathers-house.com), call our office at (913) 294-3600 and/or “Like” us on Facebook. My Father’s House owes a debt of gratitude to the United Way for its confi dence in the organization and its substantial help over the past several years.

Children’s Mercy delivers high-quality, compassionate pediatric careBy Michael CeliChildren’s Mercy Hospital

The United Way of Paola strives to maintain and advance the well-being of organizations which provide services throughout Miami County. And Children’s Mercy Hospital is just one of those organizations which benefit from that support. As a non-profit organization, Children’s Mercy relies on donations and funding from outside sources like the United Way to continue its service to ourregion’s children. In fiscal year 2013, Children’s Mercy had nearly 900 patient encounters with patients from Miami County. In fact, the No. 1 reason children from Miami County visited Children’s Mercy last year was for Orthopaedic-related issues. Support from the United Way helps Children’s Mercy serve kids like 17-year-old C.J. Walker. A young blues musician, C.J. suffered a dramatic shoulder injury which caused his family to seek treatment at Children’s Mercy. C.J. sustained an injury called shoulder dystocia during birth. During delivery, C.J.’s shoulder became stuck on his mother’s pelvis. When the doctor pulled him through the birth canal, the force tore every major nerve in his tiny, left shoulder. Although necessary for the safety of C.J. and his mother, the traumatic delivery caused severe damage to his arm. C.J. was just one-week old when his parents brought him to Children’s Mercy Hospitals and Clinics. Andrea Melanson and Connie Chesser were the occupational therapists oversaw his care. C.J. made visits to the hospital twice a week to spend time in the therapy pool, practice using scissors, pull apart Legos, and other therapeutic exercises disguised as everyday child’s play. Despite clinical efforts, progress was slow and painstaking. “We classified C.J. as a severe injury,” Melanson said. “Early on, we tried to rehabilitate his arm, but we realized much of the damage wouldbe permanent.” C.J. underwent five surgeries during the next several years to graft nerves, transfer muscles and rearrange the bone structure of his arm. Therapy remained regular as he approached his teenage years. And though he would never regain full function of his arm, that didn’t keep him idle. He was eventually able to play sports, handle routine tasks and even drive a car. “We didn’t want him to be limited in any way,” Clint, C.J’s father, said. “When he wanted to try something, he just found a way. He never wanted help; he wanted to figure things out on his own.” That determination fed directly into C.J.’s passion for playing guitar – and specifically playing the blues. During the summer of his freshman year of high school, C.J. decided to try something new. He wanted to take his longstanding desire to play the guitar and make it reality. But with one fully functional hand, he would have to get creative. He figured out how to play by first turning the guitar upside down. A part of the guitar called a whammy bar assisted his left hand with strumming motion. Within just two years, C.J. began to find his own voice as a musician. His confidence and ability quickly elevated. Now, he takes part in regular open jam sessions at Danny’s Big Easy, located in the heart of the 18th and Vine – Kansas City’s blues and jazz district. For C.J., support and determination have led to an outlet he can truly call his own. “It’s my voice without me speaking,” C.J. said. “I don’t care much about playing sports anymore. Now my guitar is with me everywhere I go.” Support from the United Way is extremely beneficial in providing the most effective care for our children. Without support from donors and organizations like the United Way, treatment for kids like C.J. could be negatively affected. In order to successfully serve our regions children, funding and support from outside resources is critical. We want to hear your story. Help make the Holiday Merrier for Medicalodge ClientsAll 93 clients at Medicalodge are diagnosed with a mental illness. 98% of our clients are on state assistance (Medicaid), so they have very little income to purchase items. Without the community’s involvement and support, not all clients will receive a gift. Most of our clients enjoy getting out and shopping. Normally they are unable to do so, due to lack of funds. We felt a “shopping gift” would be a wonderful opportunity for them. This is why your contribution is so very important. All monetary donations will be used to provide these special gift vouchers or to purchase items for our clients. If you would prefer to purchase items, you may contact us for a list. Clients are in need of clothing in sizes, 2X, 3X, 4X etc. Clients also enjoy DVD movies, books, music, Bibles (large print), jewelry, perfume/cologne and regular or diabetic candy. We would prefer to have all donations to the facility by December 14th. Medicalodges thanks everyone who has helped in the past and is planning to help in the future. Christmas is a special time to refl ect and celebrate the birth of Christ and give to those in need. Acts 20:35 “It is more blessed to give than to receive.”

Already blessed with a place to go on Thanksgiving Day? Will you be with friends and family? Then maybe you’d like to contribute so that others have this opportunity. Please call us or drop by.

Did you know that . . .

And that we began a second HUD-funded transitional housing program in February of this year that expands us into 6-counties?

And we will launch a Community Outreach Center in Fort Scott by the end of this year that will provide day services for people who remain homeless?

My Father's House will begin it’s 9th year of transition-al housing services at our facility in Paola in January?

We cannot accomplish such things without the help of generous people. We thank those of you who have giv-en in the past. You are appreciated by us and those we serve. We ask that you consider a gift as we pass through this time of Thanksgiving into Christmas. We need match-ing funds for the start of our year. We realize that times are tough. Please consider helping us help your homeless neighbors. You may bring donations to our facility, mail them or give via our website. Thank you!
