The Art of CartooningToday we think of cartoons as the things thatwe watch on a Saturday morning, but it wasn’talways that way. Long before television therewere newspapers. People bought them to findout the news of the day and to see theirfavorite cartoonist’s latest entry. Back then, cartoons were used not just for entertainment, but to express political and social ideas. Today,

we still have what we refer to as “editorial”cartoons that address these ideas, but we alsohave the “funnies”, cartoons that are made justfor entertainment and have a storyline or plot. Most cartoons today (especially animation) aredrawn by computer, but some still rely on“hand-drawn” frames like the ones by CharlesSchulz for the “Peanuts” strip.

Cartoon:A drawing depicting ahumorous situation.

Using the strip below, drawyour own cartoon, and write thedialogue in the box provided.

You’re a Good Man, CharlieBrown opened off-Broadway atTheatre 80 St. Marks on March7, 1967.The idea for the showbegan in 1966 when producersArthur Whitelaw and GenePersson asked Clark Gesner toturn his album of PEANUTScharacter songs into a showusing Charles Schulz’s comicstrips for the book. The showwas an immediate audiencefavorite and has become oneof the most produced musicalsin history, it even enjoyed aBroadway run in 1999 starringKristen Chenowith who laterwent on to star in WICKED. Sofor the past 40 years, thePEANUTS gang has delightedaudiences and critics alike withtheir unique perspective on lifeand its daily challenges.

Charles Schulz – 1922-2000He was born CharlesSchulz on November26, 1922 in St. Paul,Minnesota but wasnicknamed “Sparky”

by his uncle. He loved to draw from a youngage and his family saved money so thathe could take a correspondence course incartooning, where he received only a C+ inthe “Drawing Children” course. After many

attempts to sell his “Lil Folks” comic strip,he finally achieved success when it was soldto United Features in 1950. Unfortunately, due to a copyright law, the name had to bechanged to “Peanuts”.

Mr. Schulz was known drawing each strip byhand and for giving his characters traits andproblems that were usually associated withgrown-ups.

Make your own dayEver wonder how holidays got started? Well, some holidays started as a localcustom, or a celebration of an achievement , whereas most are observances ofa famous event or admired person. Today we observe Martin Luther King’sbirthday in honor of his work for civil rights, we also honor the achievementsof George Washington and Abraham Lincoln. Some holidays mark a special dayin American history or celebrate a particular section of our society, likeMother’s Day. Some of the other things that we celebrate as holidays arecultural events or historical milestones like Cinco de Mayo or The 4th of July. Not all holidays are nationally recognized with schools, banks, and federalbuildings being closed, but we still like to celebrate them anyway.

In “You’re a Good Man, Charlie Brown”, Schroederwants to make Beethoven’s Birthday a school holiday.

If you could make your own holiday, what would it be?Think about what is special to you. What would youlike to celebrate? Would it be an achievement? An

award? Someone in your family? YourPet? In the space at the right createyour own poster for the holiday and

explain the reason why you chose it.

Clark Gesner – 1938-2002Born in Augusta, Maine in 1938, Clark Gesner attendedPrinceton University where he composed songs for theTriangle Theatre Club. After graduation, he moved to NewYork City where he worked on the “Captain Kangaroo” showand helped to get “Sesame Street” started. In 1967 he senta recording of a few songs that he wrote about the “Peanuts”characters to Charles Schulz who immediately loved them andgave his permission for a full-length musical adaptation. After

the success of You’re a Good Man, CharlieBrown, he continued to write musicals includ-ing “The Utter Glory of Morrisey Hall, “AnimalFair” and the revue, “The Jello is AlwaysRed”. When asked which PEANUTS charac-ter he identified with, he chose Linus forhis insightful view of life.
