Our clients
We are the advisor of choice among leading companies who are seeking a trusted recruitment partner. Our clients operate across all industries
and are of all sizes. Some of our current clients across the Middle East & Africa include:
Case study: General Manager – Saudi Arabia (ThyssenKrupp)
Situation: ThyssenKrupp has 150,000 employees in over 80 countries, generating sales in excess of GBP40 Billion. Saudi Arabia is a key growth market for the elevator & escalator
division and, to capitalise on this, ThyssenKrupp needed to employ a best in class General Manager to drive the P&L, cross functional reporting and most importantly
capture new projects and sales in the KSA construction market. The profile required regional construction market experience, Arabic language skills and someone of
Muslim faith to allow entry to Makah.
Solution: Given the time and profile constraints of this assignment, PageGroup worked in full partnership with ThyssenKrupp and utilised all the sourcing tools available to us,
including, a blind press and online advertising campaign, our local database as well as head hunting and networking with high calibre profiles we have developed over the
past decade in the Middle East. Our research team formulated a long list of multinational target companies so we could target top Sales Directors and General Managers
in the region, while advertising allowed us to capture the broader passive market.
The key selection criteria included: • Bi-lingual – fluent in both Arabic and English
• Bachelors Degree in Electrical or Mechanical Engineering, preferably with an MBA
• Either Sales Director or General Manager for a multinational building technology (electrical or mechanical) company
• Sales revenue or P&L ownership of $50m++
• Previous Saudi experience
• Strong leadership skills and outstanding communication skills
Outcome: • After a four week campaign, a shortlist of relevant candidates was forged using PageGroup’s integrated sourcing techniques. Shortlisted candidates included profiles
from direct competition like Kone, Schindler and Mitsubishi; industry leaders in the construction industry such as Honeywell, ABB and Siemens; as well as parallel
industry leaders like Sita, Lafarge and Chicago Bridge & Iron.
• The selected candidate was a tri-lingual (French, Arabic & English) MBA graduate from London Business School with a Bachelors of Electrical Engineering from
the American University of Beirut. He was currently Regional Sales Director at Siemens and was seeking a General Manager role opportunity as a career step up
along with remaining within the building technology sector.
Case study: Sales recruitment campaign - Qatar (Ooredoo)
Situation: Ooredoo is a leading international communications company with a customer base of more than 93 million. They have been the fastest-growing telecommunications
company in the world since 2005. In Qatar, they are the preferred choice for world-class communication for consumers, businesses, residences and organisations – and
they continue to build the network to make Qatar, their home nation, one of the best-connected countries in the world.
Ooredoo Qatar approached Michael Page wanting to recruit 30+ staff in a global campaign. Positions covered senior sales and services roles within Direct Sales and
Business Accounts.
Solution: Dubai and Oman were selected as initial candidate sourcing locations. Michael Page provided a three week time line where candidates would be sourced and selected.
Our consultants used the below sourcing strategy to reach out to the market and find the best calibre of candidates within the criteria fixed by Ooredoo:
• Database - Michael Page complements every search campaign with a thorough search of our local and global databases. We have the most extensive and accurate
candidate database in the MENA region with more than 80,000 registered local candidates.
• Headhunting - Our research team assisted our consultants on further sourcing of candidates for senior management roles by using a headhunt and market mapping
approach.
• Advertising Strategy - We launched an aggressive online advertising campaign to source the best talent in the Middle East. As such, we were able to draw from over
3,000,000 active candidates.
Outcome: • Michael Page (headed by one Account Director and a dedicated a team of 4+ consultants) screened over 300 candidates against agreed key selection criteria and
briefed candidates on the role. Shortlisted candidates where then approved by Ooredoo line management and HR and booked in for an interview in Dubai the
following week.
• 60 interviews were arranged to take place in Dubai’s DIFC over a 5 day period. The Michael Page account team worked with Ooredoo to coordinate and assist in the
set up across the week, where both HR and line management interviews took place along with ability testing.
• 15 candidates were offered various positions with Ooredoo. Michael Page successfully
closed 10 candidates and they will be joining Ooredoo in the coming months.
• The second stage of the campaign is now underway in the UK.
Case study: Procurement Director EMEA – United Arab Emirates (Aggreko Plc)
Situation: Aggreko Plc is a FTSE 100 publicly listed business headquartered in the UK and is a global leader in power generation and temperature control technology. Operating in
130 locations, they required a Procurement Director for Europe, Middle East & Africa (EMEA) to be based in Dubai to strategically manage the regional purchasing and
supply chain management. This was an integral position for their regional development strategy, and they were seeking to attract the highest calibre candidates globally
to be able to successfully lead this function.
The key selection criteria included: • Ten years’ leadership experience, with substantial exposure in a multi-national organisation with a strategic mindset
and the ability to design and implement the necessary change agenda required within the region for Aggreko.
• A ‘hands-on’ style and the ability to implement a strategic sourcing program to deliver key savings for Aggreko
across a wide geographic region.
• Experience in the centralisation of a procurement function and the implementation of best practice within a sizable business.
• Talented, energetic and results driven candidates who have demonstrated their abilities through leading teams, delivering strong commercial results and the
development of their personnel.
Solution: Due to the calibre of individual required, and the timescales to recruit the role, Michael Page was engaged on an exclusive retained basis. Over a three week period, Michael Page delivered a robust search for suitable individuals to match Aggreko’s requirements. This included:
• A global advertising campaign (bespoke design utilising Michael Page’s international online platforms along with numerous tactically placed advertisements:
(Total Jobs, Seek, Careerbuilder, Gulf Talent, LinkedIn, Career Junction, Bayt).
• Michael Page database search. Since 2001, Michael Page consultants have built a market leading database within the Procurement & Supply Chain sectors.
• Networking - with strong local and international networks, we maximised our search through official bodies and partners (CIPS), along with briefing our international
counterparts to yield high quality candidates.
• Headhunting and market mapping - Michael Page have a dedicated research team who were briefed on Aggreko’s specific requirements. We mapped Aggreko’s
competitors and companies with close links in their industry, and then actively headhunted and approach key personnel in corresponding positions within these
organisations.
Outcome: • Aggreko interviewed six shortlisted candidates, and four were taken forward to final stage presentations in front of senior executives.
• Six weeks after giving Michael Page the initial brief to recruit, Aggreko successfully offered the position to a candidate who had worked for internationally renowned
businesses such as GSK, Honda and VW.
• This candidate relocated from Brussels, Belgium to Dubai for the position after seeing Michael Page’s advertisement in that country.
• Of the final six candidates, four were based outside of the Middle East and were sourced from the campaign Michael Page conducted.
Case study: CEO x 4 – United Arab Emirates & Saudi Arabia (IFFCO)
Situation: The IFFCO Group is a multinational FMCG company headquartered in the United Arab Emirates with presence in over 30 countries and revenue in excess of $2billion.
They operate across 12 categories including premium brands, commodity products and raw materials. Some of their leading brands include Tiffany, Al Baker, London
Dairy, Igloo, Hayat, Noor and Rahma.
The organisation was looking to step change the business growth over the next three to five years and asked Michael Page to recruit four critical CEO positions ranging
from $250,000 to $300,000 salary plus bonus. The positions were:
• CEO – Ice Cream
• CEO – Biscuits
• CEO – Food Service
• CEO – Saudi Arabia
The key selection criteria included: Each position had clearly defined key selection criteria which focussed on:
• Specific product/category knowledge gained within a multinational
• Leading business transformation via sales, marketing and manufacturing
• Arabic speaking and expertise in KSA distribution universe (for the CEO – Saudi Arabia position)
Solution: Michael Page utilised their global databases, research team, headhunting and personal networks to generate shortlists for each role with the final candidates selected
and successfully starting – all remaining in post.
Outcome:
• CEO – Ice Cream: headhunted from Nestle Ice Cream in Brazil, was previously their Sales & Marketing Director.
• CEO – Biscuits: headhunted from a top Greek conglomerate with previous experience with Kraft and Nestle in Greece in the biscuits category.
• CEO – Foodservice: headhunted from a top UK food business with previous experience at P&G running their ‘away from home’ div ision.
• CEO – KSA: headhunted from top KSA family conglomerate with previous experience at Coca Cola and Pepsico.
Case study: Multiple sales roles – Kenya & South Africa (Lucozade Suntory)
Situation: Following the acquisition of the Lucozade and Ribena brands by the Japanese based Suntory Group from GSK, Suntory’s Dutch office approached Michael Page to
assist them with the launch of their first offices in both Johannesburg and Nairobi. Suntory was established in Japan in 1899 as a brewing and distilling company
group. They have since expanded into other fields including soft drinks and are one of the world’s largest players in the beverages sector. Suntory’s South African
office had just been set up (two people from GSK transferred across following the acquisition) and they needed four senior sales staff to be based in Johannesburg. In
Kenya, Suntory had also just registered a company and they wanted Michael Page to recruit their first four hires for the business which were also sales roles.
The key selection criteria included: • Degree qualified candidates, preferably with marketing or commerce degrees
• Proven sales experience in the FMCG sector, preferably in beverages
• Mature, professional and trustworthy candidates, capable of setting up an office
• Strong understanding of distribution channels in either South Africa or Kenya
• Able to prioritise and work under pressure
Solution: Suntory came to Michael Page with eight roles in total and the approach taken for this complex project was to focus separately on the South African and Kenyan
roles. We worked on a mix of retained and contingent (success only) agreements, with the two most senior roles (Commercial Director South Africa and Commercial
Director Kenya) being retained and the three mid level roles reporting into each of these positions (Sales and Key Account Managers) being contingent.
• For the roles based in South Africa, we relied on our very strong South African candidate database as well as our existing networks for
recommendations and referrals
• For the roles based in Kenya, we relied on our networks in Kenya for recommendations and referrals, social media and a targeted online advertising campaign.
• For the two Commercial Director roles we also engaged our in-house research team to map the market and identify relevant candidates performing a similar role
within competitor companies and pro-actively headhunting them.
Outcome:
• We submitted a minimum of three relevant candidates for each position.
• All South African candidates were met with face to face and interviewed extensively to ensure they met with Suntory’s requirements as well as their company
culture. All candidates based in Kenya also underwent a comprehensive interview process with Michael Page via Skype.
• We then conducted a professional shortlist presentation to Suntory and following their interview process, all eight positions were successfully filled.
Case study: CFO – Guinea (BHP Billiton)
Situation: The Guinea iron ore deposits are amongst the very last ones of this quality known in the world. Société des Mines de Fer de Guinée (SMFG), a BHP-Billiton and Newmont consortium, is focused on developing the deposits around Mount Nimba, which is expected to be a Tier 1 mining operation and is estimated to go into production within the next decade. The site of Mount Nimba is located near the border of Guinea and Liberia and employees work on a FIFO (Fly In Fly Out) status rotating between six weeks on site and three weeks at home. BHP-Billiton was in the process of selling its stake in the project and approached Michael Page to assist them in hiring a Finance and Compliance Manager for this purpose. In addition to the remote site issue, an additional complication was finding someone with the right qualifications who would be happy to work on a one-year contract position.
The key selection criteria included: • Strong academic background in Finance (Chartered Accountant)
• Previous experience in French-speaking Africa with exposure to French-inspired local legislation
• Experience in multiple reporting lines with various shareholders and governmental representatives
• Proven track record in developing in-country employees through planned training, support and coaching
• Experience in the resources industry within emerging markets and in the delivery of major CAPEX projects
• Fluency in both English and French
Solution: BHP engaged Michael Page on an exclusive retained search. The approach used was designed to target relevant professionals from the mining industry who were familiar with a harsh working environment and FIFO status. It included:
• A web campaign focused on highly specialised job boards (www.infomine.com , www.jobs4mining.com) as well as the ability to reach candidates in countries
with a strong mining culture (namely Canada, South-Africa and Australia) through our colleagues and Michael Page websites in those countries
• A detailed search of our African database comprising of over 10,000 candidates with a background in mineral resources
• Networking and connecting with key contacts in the industry to identify relevant professionals available on short-notice in the market
Outcome: • A short-list of six senior candidates was presented to BHP-Billiton. Two candidates were based in Canada, one in Australia and three in France
• Five of these candidates were selected for first round interviews
• Of these, three were progressed to final round interviews which were held in London.
• The successful candidate was offered the position only two months after the search was launched. This was considered a very fast recruitment process in the
African context and also given the nature of the role.
• The selected candidate had 13 years’ experience in the mining industry including 10 years in French-speaking Africa. He had previously worked in Guinea
and had worked on FIFO status during various stages of his career.
Case study: Managing Director – Morocco (PERI)
Situation: Founded in 1969, PERI is one of the leading providers of formwork and scaffolding systems in the world. Headquartered in Germany, the company has more than 50
international subsidiaries and over 100 stock yards around the world. The company has over 6,700 employees and their revenues in 2013 revenues were 1,099 million
Euros.
Peri approached Michael Page to assist them in recruiting their Managing Director of Morocco for a large development project. Reporting to the Regional Managing
Director based in Germany, the position was a business critical role for the group as it involved one of their most profitable projects. The main goal for the Managing
Director was to develop a new organization within the Moroccan subsidiary and to develop Moroccan business.
The key selection criteria included: • Strong academic background
• Minimum 10 years’ experience as Business Unit Director or Managing Director,
with a proven track record onto the Moroccan Market.
• Excellent negotiation skills
• Fluency in French, English and German
Solution: PERI engaged Michael Page on an exclusive, retained search. The approach used was designed to target relevant professionals with experience in the Moroccan market
and/or emerging markets and included:
• A detailed search of the Michael Page Africa and mining databases to map the market and identify relevant candidates performing a similar role
• An advertisement was posted on our African website to attract similar profiles with African experience
• Active networking campaign amongst senior industry professionals.
Outcome: • A shortlist of 6 highly relevant senior candidates was presented to Peri
• 4 candidates went through a comprehensive interview process and the candidate selected was a trilingual Business Unit Director with 10 years’
experience in the heavy and mechanical industry in both Morocco and Germany.
• He possessed a strong track record in business development and improving company performance.
Case study: Multiple roles across different disciplines – South Africa (Shell)
Situation: Shell is a global group of energy and petrochemicals companies with around 92,000 employees in more than 70 countries and territories around the world. Shell
approached Michael Page to assist with the recruitment of a number of roles across a variety of their business divisions. Michael Page has 10 specialist recruitment
divisions - each with their own team of specialist recruiters. Michael Page appointed one central account manager to the Shell account to coordinate our ability to
efficiently and effectively recruit for a large, complex business such as Shell across multiple specialist disciplines.
Solution: Michael Page appointed an account manager to Shell. The account manager was responsible for understanding the different requirements of the various business
divisions of Shell and what individual hiring managers were looking for. As the central point of contact, the Michael Page account manager was in charge of translating
what Shell hiring managers wanted and conveying this to the appropriate Michael Page specialist recruiter to execute. Having one central contact meant that Shell hiring
managers only needed to deal with the one Michael Page recruitment contact. This kept things simple and efficient for Shell. The approach taken for each recruitment
assignment was dependent on the seniority of the role as well as the skills required, and involved methods such as:
• Engaging our in-house research team to perform market mapping and strategic headhunting of relevant individuals within the energy / petrochemicals sector
• Active networking campaign amongst senior professionals in the relevant discipline.
• A targeted online advertising campaign. This enabled us to reach a large audience through key online sourcing portals (www.michaelpageafrica.com, LinkedIn,
Google, Pnet, Career Junction, Careers24, Executive Placements, bestjobs.co.za, justthejob.co.za and jobs.co.za)
• Search of our global Michael Page candidate databases
Outcome: Since signing the Preferred Supplier Agreement with Shell we have worked with them on roles across HR, IT, Sales, Marketing, Engineering and Finance.
Positions filled include:
• Project Engineer
• Field Business Development Manager
• Health, Safety, Security & Environment (HSSE) Manager
• Terminal Operations Manager
• Group Reporting Manager
