Fruit Tree Information

Planting InstructionsPrior to planting, if soil is very sandy or very heavy, add compost to improve water retention and drainage.

Planting:Th e roots should be fresh and plump - trim away any bruised or damaged roots. If the roots look dried out, soak overnight in a bucket of water.

Dig a hole large enough to accommodate roots easily without cramping, bending or cutting them to fi t. Form a cone of soil in bottom of hole.

Set the tree root on mound. Adjust the tree’s depth so that the old soil line (a darkened line at the base of the trunk) will be at the surface level of soil sur-rounding the planting hole.

Refi ll the hole about ¾ full with soil and fi rm it around roots with fi ngers. Th en thoroughly soak with water. If settling occurs, readjust tree depth by grasp-ing at the base and rocking it back and forth while gently pulling up. Once readjusted, add remaining soil and water it.

Form a ridge around the hole to create a basin to direct water to roots. If planted in hot area of direct sunlight, paint trunk of tree with white latex or white-wash to protect it from sunburn (especially important for small fruit trees).

In the future – don’t overwater tree. Check moisture in soil well beneath the surface and only water when necessary.

NOTE: For best performance, prune back all branches by 1/3. this promotes good root production to best support the tree.
