The Race Continues - May Offers Four Lincoln Pro-Am Sites

Our Lincoln Pro-Ams are an important part of our tournament schedule and the early season response to these events has been excellent. Not only do these events provide professionals with an opportunity to play on a number of terrific area courses, but it is also a great networking tool for assistants and all our professionals. The Pro-Ams also provide Lincoln with the exposure they seek in addition to their major

sponsorship of our events (Met PGA, Women’s Met Open plus our Pro-Presidents and Pro-Ams). We are excited to have four great sites on the schedule for May and hope our professionals from throughout the Section will take advantage of these opportunities. The schedule includes Knollwood CC on May 8th, Hollow Brook CC on May 12th, Bonnie Briar CC on May 15th and Sands Point Golf Club on May 22nd. Check out the “Race for the Lease” standings on the web site and please remind your golfers to take advantage of the Lincoln Test Drive opportunities. Winning combined gross and net winners will be competing for a berth in the season ending Mohegan Sun Tournament of Champions on Oct. 7th.

Met PGA Returns to Pinehurst on Nov. 2nd – 5th - Pro-Am is Expected to Be A Sell-Out Thanks to 2014 US Open Championships

We are getting ready to accept entries for the 2014 Met PGA Pro-Am at Pinehurst. We are thrilled to be making a return to this classic destination that has recently undergone some terrific renovations in anticipation of the 2014 US Open and US Women’s Open. The lure of a great track and playing at this year’s US Open venue assures us of a quick sell-out. Please check with Jeff Voorheis if you have questions about the registration process and the entry form and information are on the web site. Our Nov. 2-5 Pro-Am includes tournament rounds on #2, #4 and #8. Entry forms faxed to the section must be accompanied with credit cards. At minimum, a $1000 deposit per amateur will be charged upon receipt of entry form.

Head Professional Update – Met PGA Club Association Mailing is Coming Soon In early May we will be sending out an important mailing for our Head Professionals. This will be a renewal or member-ship application form for our Met PGA Club Association. This $300.00 fee funded by our area clubs and courses contrib-utes to many of the key activities we take great pride in. The Club Association funds help support our Educational pro-grams, our Employment & Club Relations initiatives, our many Communications vehicles as well as our growth of the game priorities. Each year we have been fortunate to have between 120 and 150 clubs and courses join our Met PGA Club Association. Our thanks to our head professionals who promote the Met PGA Club Association with their GM, Presi-dent and/or facility leaders.

Head Professional Contributions Top $8,000.00

Our sincere thanks to all the head professionals who added a contribution to the Assistants Fund when paying their 2014 Met PGA Tournament Dues. We are over $8,000.00 at this time, a record in contributions. These additional funds allow the Assistants Tour to pay out purses to 40% of the field as opposed to 33%, increasing the opportunities for our assistants and apprentices to earn a check.

Unfortunately many of today’s members are not aware of what a special professional and person, Michael “Mickey” Homa was. Mentor Monday at The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club on May 19th - A Special Event for Head Professionals and Assistants

The season for the Assistants Tour and related activities is off to a fast start. Following the opening meeting at Cherry Valley and with a nearly completed schedule of Assistant Tour events already posted, the 2014 season looks to be a special one. In addition to the full field for the Assistant-Assistant Match Play Championship (a year-long event with 64 teams and now a small waiting list), and the over-subscribed Spring Major at Stanwich the Assistants Tour will gear up for the 2nd edition of Mentor Monday on May 19th. Last year was the inaugural version and the combination of education, networking, fraternalism and competition made this an instant winner. This year’s event will be Monday, May 19th at The Saint Andrew’s Golf Club. A panel discussion with Jamie Kilmer, Greg Bisconti, Cory Muller and Mike Summa will headline the morning program. Lunch and a shotgun follow the educational presentations. Our goal is to get as many of the less-tenured assistants, apprentices and PGM PGA University graduates to team with fellow assistants and at least one head professional in each pairing. This creates an entire day of some mentoring and networking for everyone involved. It is also not too early to be thinking about end of the season assistant honors and opportunities either. The Taylor Made Assistant of the Year Award is based on service and performance. All candidates for the Gene Borek Squire Cup Team will be considered along with any other applicant who supports the Met PGA programs and activities (education, tournament and growth of the game), and are involved with fund-raising or community initiatives (such as Junior Golf, Patriot Golf Day, etc.). The Board also seeks representatives of the ideals of our Section in promoting the importance of playing and teaching the game. Assistants will also once again be competing for the Gil McNally Most Improved Assistant Player Award (based on performance in 2013 and 2014). The award is sponsored by The Treiber Group in recognition of Gil McNally, long time head professional at Garden City Golf Club and a role model for assistants and head professionals to emulate. Scarsdale’s Pete Catanzaro won the trophy and the $2,500.00 prize last year based on his improvement on the scoring average from the 2012 to 2013 seasons. The Assistants have continued their policy to try and combat slow play in their Tour events. In all Assistants Tour shotgun events, players will have 35 minutes from the time the 3rd group’s scorecard is returned to complete play and report to the scoring area. The first offense will provide for a warning and posting of the violators on the web site. Penalties will be assessed for future infractions including ultimately the penalty of disqualification. The policy adopted by the Met PGA Board of Directors to assist with players struggling to be competitive has also been continued. It is felt that the Assistants Tour is meant to not only offer tournament opportunities, but also to help player’s develop with their own games. Unfortunately, there is a concern that some players are just using this as a playing opportunity. Starting with the opening Assistants Tour event, if a player returns a score of 90 or higher more than once, his employer will be contacted by the Tournament Committee. They will discuss what actions the player is taking to improve his or her game. If that player returns a 3rd score during the season of 90 or higher, he or she will be asked to suspend their play on the Assistants Tour until they have demonstrated their improvement and comfort to regain playing privileges. Apprentices preparing for their next Level checkpoint are reminded that the William A. Mitchell Scholarship Fund supports those with financial needs in completing the next requirements in their apprenticeship for PGA Membership. The Mitchell Scholarship Fund application will be posted in July this year with recipients announced at The Mitch Pro-Am at Innis Arden on Sept. 23rd.

PGA of America Offers Complimentary Online Education The complimentary online PGA Education that was announced in the April issue of Membership Matters, has now been soft-launched on PGALinks. These courses can be found within both the Education and MSR links: http://apps.pgalinks.com/professionals/apps/education/video_education/index.cfm?ems_event=140 There are eleven (11) online video seminars worth 1 or 2 MSR credits in the PGA REQUIRED category upon successful comple-tion (70%) of the assessment at the end of each seminar session. Each online seminar may only be taken once and there is just one assessment retake opportunity allowed. The topics include but are not limited to: Player Development, PerformanceTrak, CPP2.0, Connecting with Her, Staff Sales & Service Training, Knowing Your Customer and more. These online courses are being offered in order to supplement the in-person opportunities available through Section meetings, Section education and Player Development/Golf 2.0 programming. In addition, the PGA is hopeful that this helps to remove some of the burden that occurs in the final year of an MSR cycle. As of March 31, 2014, only 26.5% of PGA Members had fully met the MSR requirement, compared with 29.1% at the same time in the previous cycle.

Play Golf America Day Scheduled for Memorial Day Weekend May 24th Event to Celebrate Veterans, Families and 100th Anniversary of the Red Course at Eisenhower Park

For several years we have enjoyed a visit in late April or early May to Eisenhower Park for our Play Golf America Day. For 2014, however, we are making this a very special event. On Saturday, May 24th our Play Golf America program with free range balls, free lessons, a multitude of demo opportunities and a clinic by Dennis Walters will be a salute to our heroic Veterans, an invitation for families to enjoy the golf experience and be part of a celebration of the Eisenhower Park Red Course’s 100th Anni-versary. We have reached out to local veteran groups to invite them and their families to participate at this 10 am – 1 pm event. Dennis Walters will provide golf’s most inspirational hour with his special Show at 11:00 am. We are asking for profes-sionals who can help out with our free lessons between 10 am and 1 pm to please contact the Met PGA Office to volunteer. We know this is a busy holiday weekend, but we feel that celebrating it with our Veterans will be rewarding for everyone in-volved. See flyer attached for more info.
