Met PGA Holiday Schedule
On behalf of all our staff, we would like to take this opportunity to thank all
of the membership and wish you and your families a wonderful holiday, very
happy Christmas and a healthy and successful New Year in 2017.
As is our custom, the Met PGA Office will be closed from Friday, Dec. 23rd until Tuesday, Jan. 3rd. However, during that time all of the staff will be checking voicemail and emails regularly and obviously can and will respond to any important business.

a handwritten note, an email or even a tweet acknowledges your appreciation for all they do for our professionals
and our Section. We are fortunate to have such a great group of Partners and Sponsors but we have to let them know
that their involvement does not go unnoticed.
PGA Annual Meeting Recap
The 100th PGA Annual Meeting was held at the Grand Hyatt here in New York City. Being an election year, there
was a focus on the candidacy for PGA Secretary with Russ Libby, Rick Murphy, and Jim Richerson putting the final
touches on their respective campaigns. Also included in the first day’s sessions were updates on PGA Junior League
Golf, the Past President’s forum, and a delegate town hall discussion. The keynote speaker was Jack Nicklaus, who
offered great thoughts on the future of golf, his friend Arnold Palmer, and his affinity for PGA professionals. On
Friday November 11th, the formal session of the meeting proceeded with the officer’s reports, new business and
open forum before the election of Jim Richerson from the Wisconsin PGA as our new Secretary. Jim was sworn into
office alongside Treasurer Suzy Whaley and President Paul Levy. Also sworn in was the new Board of Directors
including Tom Henderson representing District 2. Tom replaces Dan Pasternak of New Jersey who was a wonderful
Board member and a great friend to the Met PGA. In addition to the business conducted, the meeting included a
night of honoring the 2016 Special Awards recipients and another evening recognizing the service of outgoing PGA
President Derek Sprague.

The Spirit of Giving Exemplified in Foundation Fundraisers
We are still receiving donations from the many professionals who supported our 2016 Met PGA Foundation Fund-
Raisers but did want to acknowledge those who stepped forward once again. It is heartwarming to realize how many
professionals and their members appreciate our efforts on behalf of the more than 1,300 kids who participate on our
120 event Junior Tour along with our continuing commitment and financial support of the First Tee of Metropolitan
New York and our rapidly growing PGA HOPE military veteran program. All of this was done in addition to our
continued support of Folds of Honor and Patriot Golf Day to the tune of about $250,000.00. Before the end of the
month we will be posting our leading contributors for both the Met PGA Foundation and Patriot Golf Day on the
web site to acknowledge their efforts and support of these two important initiatives.
Winter Education Series Starts Up on January 12th
Our 7th year of the Met PGA Winter Education Series will get under way on January 12th with a program featuring
4D Motion. The second event will be about preparing college bound golfers on January 19th. We will be posting the
schedule of programs in our January Newsletter as the Committee is just finalizing some venues and dates at this
time. The schedule will include programs on Thursdays (Jan 12th, 19th, Feb. 9th, 16th, Mar. 2nd, 9th, and 16th) The
emphasis will be on teaching topics and these programs will also provide our professionals with an opportunity to
visit a variety of indoor facilities, including several new venues. If you are going to be in the New York area
throughout the winter, we know you will enjoy and benefit from these programs.
PGA Show Week – The Major of Golf Business, Jan. 22 – 27
The week begins on January 22nd-23rd with the Teaching & Coaching Summit, followed by PGA Show Demo Day
at Orange County National GC on January 24th and the Merchandise Show and Education Conference on January
25th-27th. The 2017 PGA Merchandise Show will be another great opportunity to connect with your fellow PGA
Professionals and experience a full line-up of leading brands, new products, education sessions & special events.

Condolences
Our sympathies to Met PGA member Dan Tzivanis and his family on the passing of Dan’s brother Jim "Tizzy"
Tzivanis, 60, of Endicott, NY. Tizzy was a four-year standout on the varsity golf team at Union-Endicott High
School, winning the NYS team championship in 1973. He was a lifelong member at En-Joie Golf Club, and played
competitively for three decades.
We also extend our deepest condolences to the Nolletti family on the loss of Marty Nolletti, Jr. A graduate of
Mamaroneck High School, Marty was a standout player in the area with a number of wins on his resume.
Tournament News
The finals of the Web.Com Tour Qualifying, will be Dec. 8th – 11th at Orange County National GC in Winter
Garden, FL. Deepdale’s Ben Polland is in the field along with former Met PGA Junior Tour Star Cameron Wilson of
Rowayton, CT. Also in the field are former MGA Player of the Year and Met PGA Junior Tour champion, David
Pastore, and Marc Turnesa, son of retiring Rockville Links pro Mike Turnesa Jr.
The PGA Tournament Series Presented by GolfAdvisor will again add $10,000.00 in sponsor dollars to each event
of the upcoming PGA Tournament Series. All the events are at the PGA Golf Club on the following dates – Nov.
28-29 (Wanamaker), Dec. 1-2 (Dye); Dec. 5-6 (Ryder), Dec. 8-9 (Wanamaker), Dec. 12-13 (Dye) and Dec. 15-16
(Ryder). Enter on PGA.org or by calling 1-800-474-2776. The Met PGA enjoyed a number of high finishes in the
first event at the Wanamaker Course. Piping Rock assistant Nick Beddow finished in a tie for second earning
$2,550. GlenArbor’s Rob Labritz was T6, while Ben Polland (Deepdale), Kyle Higgins (Inwood) were T14, and
Rob Corcoran (Poxabogue) T20 also cashed checks.

Furey and Rizzo Achieve Quarter Century Status
Congratulations to Larry Furey, Director of Golf at New Paltz Golf Course, and Rich
Rizzo, Head Professional at Pleasantville GC, on their recent election into the PGA’s
Quarter Century Club, having just completed 25 years of active service and membership in
the PGA of America.
2016 PGA Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship Recipients
Named
The PGA of America's Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship Program has awarded scholarships to 128 students
totaling $295,00 for the 2016-17 school year. Founded in 1986, the PGA Financial Assistance Fund Scholarship
Program has awarded more than $6 million to 3,064 students. Run by the PGA's Membership Services department,
the program encourages and promotes the attainment of higher education for the children and grandchildren of PGA
members. Funding for these scholarships is make possible through voluntary contributions to the PGA Financial
Assistance Fund (a tax-deductible 501c3 fund) from PGA members and other donors. The Metropolitan Section is
proud to report that three of our members’ children were awarded scholarships. The $5,000 John Cox Scholarship
went to Kendal Conway, daughter of Jimmi Conway and the $2,000 PGA Scholarships went to Jeremy Nielsen, son
of Rick Nielsen, Jr., and Matthew Shifflett, son of Tim Shifflett.

Employment Update
Congratulations to John Guyton on his recent appointment to succeed Mike Turnesa as the new head professional at
Rockville Links. Most recently an assistant to Jamie Kilmer at Wheatley Hills, John’s expansive experience in
teaching, playing and operations will make him a tremendous asset at his new post. All the best to John, Mike and
Rockville Links as they transition.
We are pleased to announce that Jack Davis, assistant to Jack Druga at Shinnecock Hills, has been chosen as the
next head professional at Essex Country Club in Manchester by the Sea, MA. Jack came Shinnecock in 2009 as an
intern from Penn State University and worked his way to First Assistant in 2015. As a member the Golf Staff, he
headed Junior Golf, Men's Tournaments and Women's Golf and became a very popular coach and teacher. He
recently became engaged to Amanda and they are planning a Fall 2017 wedding. Congratulations Jack and best of
luck in New England!
Pleasantville Country Club recently informed us that Rich Rizzo will not be returning. They are now accepting
resumes for the position of Head Golf Professional. Pleasantville Country Club (“PCC”) is private club designed by
A. W. Tillinghast in 1926. It is a 9 hole, double-tee course with renovated men’s and ladies locker rooms, restaurant
and bar, pool and fitness center. PCC is also part of a 72 condominium community that borders certain golf
holes. The course measures 4,289 yards with the front tees measuring 2,116 yards and the back tees measuring
2,173 yards. Par is 64 for men and 67 for women and the slope is 123 for men and 112 for women. The layout
includes 5 par 4’s and 4 par 3’s. The superintendent is Edward Kaufmann. PCC currently has 165 active golf
members, including 10 juniors. The homeowners account for approximately 35-40 additional golfers. Please
