Bosky Khanna BENGALURU: An ongoing study by a team of re- searchers from the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) has indicated that Bengaluru will soon face a huge water crisis. The study that is like- ly to be out soon says that if no immediate steps are tak- en, the city will go dry. Prof T V Ramachandra from the Centre of Energy and Wetlands Research Group at the IISc said that despite floods in July 2016, the city is set to experience water crisis be- cause of improper planning and ineffective implementa- tion of the existing policies. The Cauvery water dispute with the neighbouring Tamil Nadu will also have a bearing on the city’s water needs be- cause of increasing dependence on piped water. This apart, the study points out that wastage due to leakages and indiscrim- inate use by people is also adding to the growing problem. Prof Ramachandra said that Bengaluru annually re- ceives 750- 800 mm rainfall while the city lakes can hold only 35 tmcft. “At least 98% water bodies in the city are en- croached upon,’’ he said. Of the 35 tmcft water stored in the city lakes, 90% is sewage- fed water, the study points. The Bangalore Water Sup- ply and Sewerage Board (BWSSB) supplies 1400 mld everyday from Cauvery river. There are 9.15 lakh connec- tions in the city. Their estimate shows that 1.4 lakh consumers should instal rain water har- vesting systems, but only 62,000 have it. BWSSB is yet to reach out to 110 villages in the CMC and TMC areas. The study also pointed out that Bengaluru generates 15 tmcft sewage water daily. Of the water used by Bengalureans, 70% is wasted and joins sewage lines and the rest is lost by vari- ous means like evaporation, leakage and others, the ongoing study by the team revealed. The study also touches upon the water quality of most of lakes, revealing that they are highly polluted. Over 79% of city lakes fall under Class E cat- egory (for irrigation, industrial cooling, controlled waste dis- posal) and 29% lakes fall under Class D and E (can be used for wildlife and fisheries). The re- search team also showed that there has been an 88% loss in green cover in the city, a 79% loss in water bodies, a 925% in- crease in concrete land from 1970 to 2006 and over 75% of city land has paved surfaces. “Unless water is used judi- ciously, rain water harvesting strictly implemented, inter- connectivity of lakes and drains restored, there will be severe water crisis, especially in the backdrop of less rainfall in the Cauvery basin. There is also a need to treat and recycle sewage water,” Prof Ra- machandra explained. DH News Service Bengaluru staring at a severe water crisis, warns IISc study City has lost 79% water bodies. Supraja Prasad, is a disci-ple of Prof M R Krishna-murthy of Kalakshithi

School and has completed herRanga Pravesha and has alsoperformed at a few avenues.

She is a graduate in engi-neering and has completed“Vidwath”in dance. Suprajausually performs with her sis-ter Bhoomija. She performedsolo, as a tribute to her Guru,at the Bharatiya Vidya Bhavanlast week.

The necessary discipline oftechnique to take up the air inall seriousness was evidentfrom the invocatory item Alar-ipu (set to Sankeerna jathi) it-self. The keerthana of Dr MBalamuralikrishna which wastuned in the raga Vishwambariwas on Lord Nataraja. Thedevotee prays, “Bho ShambhoShankara! Please bless me andprotect me always.”

The Anandabhairavi varna“Sakhiye”of Tanjore quartetwas the mainstay of therecital. Unfolding a firm foot-ing in the basics, she per-formed with a relaxed atti-tude. The profundity expectedin the varna (Virahoth Khan-ditha Nayaki) was not fully ex-hibited but it was pleasing.

Both the Pada (Urake - De-vagandhari) and Asta padi(Yahi Madhava, Aarabhi) pro-vided her ample opportunityto prove her Abhinaya skill. The concluding thillana(Natabhairavi, Veena Krishna-

macharya) had several dancepostures with evocative footwork. She tried to depict “Vat-salya Bhava”in the Kannadadevaranama “Krishna Nee Be-gane Baro”dramatising theplayfulness and prank of Bal-akrishna. Supraja has a goodstage presence and performswith ease. But she has to grad-uate in the effective use of herfacial expression.

Another feature of thisdance recital was the emer-gence of Gagana as a Nattuva-nar. While Srivathsa’s vocalwas complimentary to thedance, Gurumurthy on mri-danga, Pradeeshachar on vio-lin, supported well.

Proofofgoodtraining

The Sharada Sam-skruthika Sangha,Basaveshwaranagara,

had organised three musicconcerts in connection withthe Ganesha Utsava.

Divya Padmanabhan whogave a vocal recital here, isnow a disciple of R N Tyagara-

jan of “Rudrapattana Broth-ers”fame. She is an MTechgraduate from IIT, Chennai, and pursuing PhD at the Indi-an Institute of Science, Ben-galuru. In one of the composi-tions (RamanathamBhajeham) Muthuswamy Dik-shitar says -“I offer my obeisance to LordRamanatha who was wor-shipped by Lord Ramachan-dra. He confers the desiredboons on his devotees. He hasthe glory of possessing “KotiTirtha.”Tanks of holy watersin His temple precinct.... Heresides in the hill Gand-hamaadana, situated at thecentre of “Setu.”

This Keerthana was chosenby Divya Padmanabhan as themain item of her concert. As aprelude, she sang raga Ka-mavardhini and elaboratedwith nerval (Kumara Gu-ruguha) and swaraprasthara.Though alapana was brief, theswaraprasthara was draggedlittle. Earlier, she also sang an-other fine composition of Dik-shitar “Sri Balasubramanya,”which was also delineatedwith raga (Bilahari), nerval(Kanakavalli Deva) and swara, highlighting the musicalstature. “Kanaka Shaila Vi-harini” - is a favourite of con-noisseurs and “Idi NyayamaSri Ramchandra”was a quick-ie. As a prelude to the de-varanama “Narayana NinnaNamada,”she also sang a slo-ka (Kasturi Tilakam) neatly.

Divya is deeply interested inmusic and her “Paattanthara”is also good. With some morehigher training and stage ex-perience, she can climb theladder of success. She was ac-companied by Shankararajanand G S Nagaraj on violin andmridanga, respectively.- Mysore V Subramanya
