METRO ALGIERS LINE 1, EXTENSION "B", HAI EL BADR-EL HARRACH

Facts Project DescriptionThe new contract includes the construction of a 2.53 km one-tube, 2-rail tunnel (2.05 kmNATM and 0.48 km in open cut construction) including inner shell of reinforced concrete,four underground stations (Bachdjarah 1, Bachdjarah 2, El Harrach Gare, El HarrachCentre), partially in open-cut, partially under top cover, two bridges (one bridge crossingover a motorway, and one pedestrian bridge over an existing railway line) and severalventilation structures. The new line extends the existing metro line from Hai el Badr in thecentre of Algiers to El Harrach Centre in the eastern part of the city. The construction worksare planned to last 44 months and will cover a length of four kilometers. For the tunnellingworks, the NATM (New Austrian Tunnelling Method) is used. Since the city of Algiersfeatures varying geological conditions, this flexible method was preferred to using a tunnelboring machine (TBM). Another reason for choosing this construction method is thecomparatively short length of the sections between the stations. The four metro stationsare built in open cut and partially under top cover. the underground works for the stationscomprise diaphragm walls, bored piles and micro bored piles as well as their anchorings.
