2 METHODOLOGY Main objectives of LAD2 are:

- To introduce tourist services based on GPS and EGNOS in Morocco,

- To make future users sensitive to new opportunities from the new E.Tourism services,

- To demonstrate the added value from EGNOS in such application.

E-Tourism services proposed in LAD2 are dedicated to:

- Local Tourism organization (It becomes a real differentiator),

- Tour operator (to improve security, conviviality and autonomy of tourists),

- Local tourism office : for renting to individual tourists,

- Telecom Operators : added values (with regular or punctual subscription..).

E.Tourism services have been developed taking into account main following needs:

- To improve comfort and interest from tourist point of view,

- To improve security of tourists,

- To optimise tourist site visit,

- To improve organization and increase benefit from tourist operator point of view.

The LAD2 demonstration is based on local experimentation in Marrakech, during several days: 2 days for private experimentation and EGNOS data assessment (29th and 30th of October 2008) and one day for public experimentation (4th of December 2008).

Enhancing the developed services, based on the feedbacks gathered from the users directly involved in the demonstrations. These feedbacks were evaluated to improve services in terms of new function and also in terms of friendliness, adaptation to the new technology, benefits and costs.

Next figure shows the EGNOS service performance in the area recorded in one day on the 24th of October 2008 during the EGNOS data acquisition campaign. The average availability is higher than 87% over Marrakech.

4.3.3 Data collection EGNOS data collection has been organized on tourist sites in Marrakech (Morocco) during several days on typical paths. Data are collected on a dedicated laptop.

EGNOS corrections are acquired in real time using a dedicated terminal connected to an onboard laptop. So EGNOS corrections processing have been performed on board, in real time for all sites in Marrakech.

4.3.4 Data analysis Acquired EGNOS location and corrections data are post-processed in order to:

- Display graphically results,

- Analyze thinly data (in particular the protection level values),

- Compare versus GPS only,

In order to answer all these points, specific tools have been developed or customized for this EGNOS post-processing phase.

Results are numerical and graphical:

- Checking of data file (data completed): EGNOS and GPS only data,

- Graphical representation for visual comparison and preliminary analysis,

- Extraction, graphical representation and statistical processing of the protection level values, of connection lost…

5 MAIN RESULTS

5.1 TOURIST SERVICES AND ALARM MANAGEMENT

Two scenarios have been played as described previously.

Results will be presented according to these 2 scenarios.

5.2 EGNOS ASSISTED TECHNOLOGY

EGNOS data have been collected on these sites in specific conditions in order to analyze EGNOS added value in the application context.

Since only terrestrial transport services are considered, only HPL (Horizontal values) are analyzed. Indeed, they have the major impact on terrestrial positions.

In order, to materialize added values of HPL, they are presented throughout this chapter acquired on the demonstration site in various contexts.

The acquisition campaign has taken place in 1 step of 3 days (another one is planned for the final review in December).

Data presented in this paragraph has been acquired during these 3 days.

5.2.1 EGNOS acquisition campaign in Marrakech: site presentation

Two main visit tours have been chosen for analysis:

- A short tour based on pedestrian transport mode (the red track on the next figure),

- A long tour in a horse-drawn carriage (the green track on the next figure).

For emergency services :

§ EGNOS or GPS data used in urban area (like in Marrakech where streets are narrow and buildings have several floors) provides, in particular conditions, some performances lower than performances expected for an emergency service. These environment conditions provide multi-paths and lost of connection.

§ Acquisition campaign shows that the HPL could be higher than 25 meters.

5.2.3 EGNOS acquisition campaign in Marrakech: EGNOS versus GPS EGNOS and GPS navigation data have been acquired in urban environment in Marrakech.

Figure 12 EGNOS (green) and GPS (Blue) navigation data in Marrakech.

This data have been acquired from a horse-drawn carriage currently used in Marrakech by tourists.

Following example aims at presenting the principles of results obtained during EGNOS acquisition campaign:

- Rough assessment of the gap with the real track,

- Comparison of the average distance between GPS and EGNOS.

Results from this table present significant differences between urban and semi-urban environment with respectively : 11,4 % and 6,2 % of connection lost.

When comparing with previous results from paragraph 5.2.4, one notes that percent of connection lost (21%) was higher in the previous case. A combination of conditions can explain these results :

- Speed in horse drawn carriage is higher than with pedestrian transport,

- Multi-paths have less impact on navigation performances when the speed is higher (cancellation of multi-path with high speed versus gathering of multi-path in case of static position),

- During acquisition from the horse drawn carriage, antenna position would be more suitable.

5.3 PROMOTION CAMPAIGN

5.3.1 Principles and objectives Since, METIS/LAD2 aims at developing and promoting dedicated application to tourist services in Marrakech using EGNOS corrections, the realization has to be naturally presented to all communities interested by this application. Several approaches have to live together according to audience:

- For a part of community, convince the usefulness of this application by presenting demonstration, concrete services (nominal case for tourist services, Urgency service…),

- For other one, to demonstrate the added value of EGNOS and availability in the area, by presenting results from EGNOS acquisition campaign,

- For other one, explain how to reach an operational status even if a demonstration version has been deployed by suggesting to coordinate actions between different communities,

- For other one (like tourist agent), demonstrate the possibility to extend system to specific applications, to other town and to a larger set of POI.

In these objectives, various supports of presentation have been prepared and updated throughout the METIS LAD2 project. These support are under various forms: slides, web site page, article, photos, demonstration recording…

Using these supports, various actions are carried on to promote e.tourism services developed in the framework of METIS/LAD2:

- Contributions to METIS newsletter including description of the application, progress advanced,

- Presentation of a paper in an event in Istanbul (Turkey) in January 2009 with an article presenting most of the METIS/LAD2 results,

- Organisation of a dedicated demonstration event in Marrakech on the 4th of December 2008.

5.3.2 Demonstration event in Marrakech

A specific dissemination event has been organized by CADTECH to present LAD2. It was held on the 4th of December 2008 in Marrakech.

Page 38: METIS - Telespaziogalileo.cs.telespazio.it/metis/public/METIS Demonstrations/Local... · Reference: Version: Page: METIS_4120_D-20_LAD2 VF 6 of 43 REPORT ON DEMONSTRATION DEFINITION

METIS

This dissemination event included:

- A general presentation of EGNOS and project (LAD2 in METIS),

- A demonstration on site of the e.tourism terminal. Demonstration allowed using 3 terminals near tourist sites in Marrakech according to 2 scenarios (emergency services and tourist application).

This event was successful with various participants from different organization like the CRT (Centre Régional du Tourisme from Marrakech), Tikida Hotel group, high technologic distributor company, local administration….

Demonstration of emergency services : The back office screen for emergency service, has been put at disposal in the conference room:

- An alarm has been realised from terminal,

- Checking on the back office screen, the alarm information is given on the map,

- The alarm is validated from the back office screen.

Sensitization of EGNOS impacts on such application performances has also been introduced.

Then, some participants went on tourist sites to test application in real life.

Demonstration of the tourist application: - Initialization of the mobile phones (start the

application, time to fix display, and application parameters definition), selection of the route and starting point : “Choose route” (some itineraries are predefined and can be chosen in a list), See Step 1, under below,

- 3 mobile phones (HTC) have been available and used by the participants,

- They check the map of Marrakech (digitalized by CATDECH for this application) and the location on the map after the first fix, see Step 2,

Page 39: METIS - Telespaziogalileo.cs.telespazio.it/metis/public/METIS Demonstrations/Local... · Reference: Version: Page: METIS_4120_D-20_LAD2 VF 6 of 43 REPORT ON DEMONSTRATION DEFINITION

- We went to the place Jamaa El Fna (see step 3). When arriving near the place, information related to the place was displayed on the mobile phone. It’s really a very interesting function: to locate tourist, to inform him on the site proximity and to provide pertinent information related to the site. Then we moved by foot, from the Place Jamaa Fna to the Koutoubia Mosque, information related to the Mosque was displayed. Then, we went by car to the Menara garden, different information related to the interest sites were given on the mobile phone.

Step 1

Step 2 Step3

Experience return from participants: All participants were very interesting by the services offered by e.tourism. Many discussions and questions have been really constructive to complete our experience return on the subject:

- They really appreciated the fact that this services could be integrate on mobile phone.

- They were very sensible of the availability of application mostly for the emergency application. We show them results and benefits using EGNOS or A-GPS in term of availability, service quality and high level of confident.

- Moroccan government foresees to have more than 10 millions of tourists per year in 2010. Lot of investments are oriented to tourist development (infrastructure like roads, airports…, technology, education…). e.tourism services could find a place in these developments.

- 7 categories of tourists travelling in Morocco have been identified. Amongst them, there is a category (30%) that travel alone in the country without any guide or tour operator. This services are really adapted to this tourist category.

- More and more tourists from Japan, Russia come to visit Marrakech. There is not any guide who speak these languages. Such tool would be a real added value with the dedicated languages.

- Agents from hotel group see in this application, a real added value for hotel, restaurant…in term of advertisements and communications, if these hotels are added in the data base of the e.tourism application.

5.4 RECOMMENDATIONS

Related to navigation performances and EGNOS

EGNOS improves emergency service performances mainly in term of availability and accuracy : they are two important differentiators for emergency application.

In urban environment, some lost connections have been put in evidence. Theses facts have to be taken into account in the application development : for example by including some corrective algorithms particularly in case of pedestrian transport mode where multi-paths have more impact on navigation performances.

A-GPS guarantees a shorter time to fix and a better availability and continuity in services.

Related to services

Emergency services (connected with tourist application) is essential in the e.tourism offer.

In the application development at operational level, one has to take into account the necessary possible extension of application to other Morocco tourist sites.

These services may have positive impacts on tourist development in Morocco by optimizing tourist visits and improve the travel comfort.

Related to business models

Several business models can be considered :

- Smartphone rental to particular tourists directly in Moroccan sites,

- By payable downloading on their own Smartphones GPS/GPRS from the web,

- Service sale to tour operators or hotel groups. Equipped Smartphones can be lent or rent to tourists directly by their local travel agent,

- ….

A combination of these different business models could be analyzed to optimize:

- The number of tourists who can benefit of these services (to contribute efficiently to tourism development),

- The profit (to interest final service operators to develop the business).

6 CONCLUSIONS & LESSONS LEARNT

A dedicated System prototype has been tested through a local area: in Marrakech. Such a system improves tourist comfort and security.

EGNOS added value (compared to GPS only) has been mainly put in evidence in term of accuracy aspects and safety area for Emergency services.

Various users and/or customers have provided their constructive feedbacks and feeling: the combination of these 2 services (Tourist and Emergency) using EGNOS provides real opportunities.

Various subject related to opportunity of application, business models, interest have been discussed:

- Increase of tourists in Morocco, tourist categories,

- Several business models can be foreseen,

- Participant required cooperation for next steps, for example CRT members invite CADTECH to present the application at the tourism exhibition in Marrakech in January 2009 on the CRT stand,

This tourist guide system is now available to be put in operation in Marrakech and other Moroccan sites. Main technological aspects have been solved. Next steps would be rather turned to organization (national operator, equipment installation network, and tourist agency), improvement of map digitalization and tourist information availability.
