In the Spotlight While most of the Butterfly Project Workshops take place during the school year, this summer Workshops will be presented to Freedom School middle school groups from Christ Lutheran Church and Ranson Middle School, the LJCC Camp Mindy Teen Camp and Camp Coleman (a Reform Jewish summer camp in Cleveland, Georgia – bringing their teens for the 3rd consecutive summer!). In addition, Camp Judea, a Zionist camp in Hendersonville, NC, has installed in its sanctuary their ceramic butterflies from last year’s participation. Volunteer Bill Schwartz donated 5,000 bookmarks for the Butterfly Project to provide to Workshop participants. Printed on the bookmarks are words spoken by Martin Niemoller, an ardent nationalist and prominent Protestant pastor who emerged as an outspoken public foe of Adolf Hitler and spent the last seven years of Nazi rule in concentration camps: “First, they came for the Socialists and I did not speak out because I was not a Socialist; then they came for the Trade Unionists and I did not speak out because I was not a Trade Unionist; then they came for the Jews and I did not speak out because I was not a Jew; then they came for me and there was no one leſt to speak for me.” Due to the generosity and sponsorship of Irving Bienstock, the 5th grade students from Temple Israel’s adopted school, Huntingtowne Farms Elementary School, will be attending Workshops again this coming school year. ank you Irving, for all you do for the Butterfly Project! * We Appreciate Our Volunteers! ur passionate and committed volunteers truly are critical to the Workshops’ success. ese men and women serve in a variety of roles, each important in helping to produce a lasting impact on the students who attend. As volunteer Lori Semel comments, “Volunteering at the Workshops is a great opportunity for me to have an impact on children regarding some very relevant issues – discrimination, prejudice, bullying – all on a level that they can use in their daily lives.” Appreciation Breakfast October 3, 2013 - 9:30am Weinberg Senior Center Please join us as we celebrate our wonderful Workshop volunteers: Wilma Asrael • Judy August • Shellie Barer Irving Bienstock • Roberta Bograd • Cathy Bogus Barry Brodsky • Suzy Catenazzo • Suly Chenkin Elaine Chernotsky • Aleen Epstein • Nancy Glass Michelle Goodman • David Graham • Jane Graham Linda Isser • Lynn Jacobson • Joan Kirschner Mindy Kirshbaum • Elizabeth Lawrence • Alison Lerner Kim Levy • Robert Lewis • Judy Marco • Sheila Margolis Sheryl Mirman • Paula Musler • Jill Newman • Elise Orenstein • Susan Rabinovich • Bill Schwartz • Lori Semel Roz Snyder • Hagit Stav • Nancy Tarbis • Barbara Ziegler To RSVP for the breakfast, or for volunteer information, please contact Julie Rizzo at 704.944.6730 or [email protected] Committee Members Wilma Asrael Judy August (Co-chair) Cathy Bogus Suly Chenkin Mindy Kirshbaum Alison Lerner Malka Me-Zahav Jill Newman (Co-chair) Sharon Taubman Barbara Ziegler Levine JCC Staff Anna Gunsher, Division Director, Family Life Services Julie Rizzo, Director of Development & Social Action Dana Kapustin, Butterfly Project Coordinator Gwen Orland, Fine Arts Coordinator For more information or to make a donation, please visit our website: www.charlottejcc.org (click Social Action tab; scroll down to Butterfly Project) e Butterfly Project would like to thank the following donors for their generosity: “How wonderful it is that no one need wait a single moment to start to improve the world.” Anne Frank Help Out. During the 2012-13 school year, the number of participants in the Butterfly Project Workshops more than doubled, having presented the Workshop to over 3,200 participants from more than 20 different schools and other organizations in the greater Charlotte area. As of the date of this newsletter, almost 1,200 participants are already scheduled to attend a Workshop during the 2013-14 school year (see below). rough a successful marketing campaign – and more importantly, by enthusiastic word of mouth – the interest in this project continues to grow. Anticipating the growth and tremendous need for additional volunteers, the Butterfly Project Committee successfully secured a Community Impact Fund grant from the Jewish Federation of Greater Charlotte to develop and present a series of training workshops for new volunteer recruits. Our January 2013 Volunteer Training Workshop was attended by 62 people. Since that time, we’ve added another 10 volunteers to our list and have had several in-depth “mini” training sessions focusing on each of the components of the Workshop. Always needing and welcoming new volunteers, we will be offering these training sessions regularly in the future. We are also in the process of completing a short film, funded by the same Federation Community Impact Fund grant, which will help our dedicated Charlotte survivors, Irving Bienstock and Suly Chenkin, present their fascinating stories to workshop participants. Looking forward, we plan to install our newly completed butterflies to the next wing of the Children’s Holocaust Memorial Sculpture in the Margaret & Lou Schwartz Butterfly Garden during the spring of 2014! We are drawing up plans to create a permanent donor sign, add inspirational quotes and make other improvements to the garden area at that time. We have established an endowment fund with the Foundation for the Charlotte Jewish Community to support the project and are committed to growing that endowment in order to help sustain the Workshops over time. We will begin the fundraising for the garden and endowment enhancements shortly and ask you, our wonderful past supporters, to consider a significant giſt to enable these improvements. With your past help, we have been able to accomplish so much in these short three years, and look forward to exceeding your expectations in the future.
