SHORT COURSE 1: Sampling for Process Control andMill Reconciliation by Francis PitardSaturday 13 – Sunday 14 July 20138.30 am – 5.00 pm, Pan Pacific PerthThis short course is for metallurgists, metallurgicalmanagers, plant design engineers, process engineers, academics and laboratory supervisors. It will focus onsampling problems in the mill and how to overcomethem, including the reasons for disagreement betweenmine and mill estimates and sampling for metallurgicalbalance and process control.AusIMM member A$2420 | Non-member A$2640

SHORT COURSE 2: Heap Leaching: Uranium, Copper,Gold and Nickel by Graeme MillerSaturday 13 – Sunday 14 July 20138.30 am – 5.00 pm, Pan Pacific PerthThe course is designed for engineers and otherprofessionals working or interested in heap leaching ofuranium, copper, nickel and other species including gold. The course is designed to provide fundamentalunderstanding of the physical and chemical ratedetermining processes that underpin these operations. The effects of ore and leach variables impacting onconstruction and management decisions will bedeveloped. This includes consideration of the ore andheap geotechnical characterisation and theconsequences on the design and operating decisions.AusIMM member A$2200 | Non-member A$2420

SHORT COURSE 3: Energy Efficient Comminutionpresented by JKTechThursday 18 July 20138.30 am – 5.00 pm, Pan Pacific PerthThis course will provide attendees with an overview ofestablished strategies for improving comminutionenergy efficiency, including ‘quick wins’ and longer-termprograms. New research directions and strategies arealso reviewed. Delegates will then be provided with amethodology for identifying opportunities for reducingenergy consumption within their own operations.Individual action-plans can be developed and discussed, allowing delegates to leave with a clear strategy forimproving energy efficiency in their own comminutioncircuits. The workshop is suitable for companyexecutives, industry professionals, site managers,site-based specialists, operators/technicians and anyonewith an interest in reducing unnecessary energyconsumption in the minerals industry.AusIMM member A$1100 | Non-member A$1320

Developing a ‘New and Innovative’ Process FlowSheet – Traps for all Players of all Ages John Canterford FAusIMM(CP), Principal, ProcessTechnologies Australia

John spent nearly 20 years at CSIRO ending up as Managerof the Hydrometallurgy Section before joining Minproc (nowAMEC) in 1987 as General Manager of their TechnologyDivision, responsible for evaluation of processingtechnologies and provision of input into a wide range ofstudies and projects. John established Process Technologies

Australia in 1999, undertaking a range of development activities for both domestic andinternational engineering and resource companies.

Is an 80th percentile Design Point Logical? Dean David FAusIMM, Technical Director, Process Mining &Metals, AMEC

Dean has 30 years’ experience in mineral processingresearch, operations, management and consulting. Hisexpertise covers most aspects of mineral processingtechnology. He was the Manager, Process at AMEC for twoyears, Process Consultant at AMEC for six years and is nowTechnical Director of Process for AMEC, Mining and Metals.

Dean’s expertise includes comminution, classification, geometallurgy, iron oreconcentration circuits (magnetite and magnetite plus hematite), scrubbing and lateritebeneficiation, mine to mill optimisation, dense media separation, mineral sandsprocessing, flotation, plant modelling (especially the use of JKSimMet), detailed processreview, ore characterisation interpretation, sampling, plant surveys, testing programdesign and management of technical teams.

Geometallurgy: What do you Really Need to Knowfrom Exploration through to ProductionKathy Ehrig, Principal Geometallurgist, BHP Billiton

Kathy graduated with a BSc in Geology from the CaliforniaState University-Fresno in 1984 and conductedgeophysical surveys in the search of geothermal energyresources for the US Navy in the mid-1970s to early 1980s.She completed a PhD in Geology from the University ofCalifornia- Berkeley in 1991. Kathy worked and lived atOlympic Dam from 1992-2006 and held various roles as

research geologist, senior research geologist, and chief research geologist.

Kathy then joined BHP Billiton in 2005 when WMC was acquired by BHP Billiton andmoved to Adelaide in 2006 as Principal Geometallurgist to lead a team of eightgeologists, mineralogists and metallurgists who developed and implemented themassive geometallurgy program which is used to support the future expansion ofOlympic Dam.

The Importance of Sampling in the MineralIndustryRalph J Holmes FAusIMM(CP), Stream Leader, Carbon SteelCSIRO Minerals Down Under National Research Flagship

Over the last 30 years Ralph has been involved largely inmineral processing research and is currently StreamLeader, Carbon Steel, of the CSIRO Minerals Down UnderNational Research Flagship. He is recognised throughoutAustralia and overseas as an expert of ferrous andnon-ferrous mineral processing and sampling mineral

commodities. Ralph received a Clunies Ross National Science and Technology Award in1998 and an inaugural Standards Award from Standards Australia in 1993 for hisoutstanding contributions to the development of mineral sampling standards. Ralph alsoreceived the inaugural Australasian Institute of Mining & Metallurgy (AusIMM) MineralIndustry Operating Technique Award in 1987 for developing Ironscan for the on-streamanalysis of iron ore.

Project DeliveryGreg Lane FAusIMM, Technical Officer, Ausenco

Greg is Chief Technical Officer with Ausenco, aninternational mining and infrastructure services business.Greg has worked in consulting, study and project deliveryroles for Ausenco for nine years and with other engineeringbusinesses for a further ten years. He has worked as aprocess engineer, commissioning manager, studymanager and consultant on many large and smallprojects, both junior and major mining companies. His

interests are both technical and relationship focussed, combining technical solutions withdelivery strategies that set projects up for success.
