INTRODUCTION

OPENING SONG: Nothing But Your Blood – [SLIDES 2-5]

LEADER: Tonight we are going to be participating in a Passover Seder. The word seder is of Hebrew origin and means the order of service. The Passover is a commemoration of God's redemption of the Jewish people from slavery in Egypt more than 3,000 years ago. God delivered Israel from the bondage of slavery in Egypt and He commanded the Jewish people to observe this holiday.

Passover

o One of 7 annual feasts

o 3 Spring, 1 Summer, 3 Fall

o From Exodus 12:1-13 [SLIDE 6a]

Originally

o Egypt—book of Exodus—“Passover”

o Looking back—to Egypt

o Memorial to physical redemption

o “Slavery in Egypt, to freedom in the promised land”

[slide 6b] Exodus 13:8-10 says, “8 You shall tell your son on that day, ‘It is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And it shall be to you as a sign on your hand and as a memorial between your eyes, that the law of the LORD may be in your mouth. For with a strong hand the LORD has brought you out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this statute at its appointed time from year to year.”.

The Passover is not to be celebrated in vain, but in giving thanks to God for his deliverance of his people from bondage. It doesn’t stop there, however, as Egypt is a model of the world and its corrupt system which enslaves us to sin. As we observe, we recognize the greater Passover in the prophetic picture of the future deliverance of the foretold Messiah – Jesus!

It is through Jesus, that we too can participate in this festival. While they looked forward to the cross prophetically, we look backward to it in remembrance. If we believe that he was indeed the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world, we, too, will be passed over from death and released from the bondage of sin as they were passed over in their bondage to Egypt.

Jesus’ Fulfillment of Passover [slide 7]

o 1 Corinthians 5:6-8 “Christ our Passover”

o Jesus Celebrated it as The Last Supper

Instituted “The Lord’s Supper” or “Communion”

Jesus is the fulfillment of it2

Page 3: MessianicSeder - calvaryeverett.com€¦  · Web viewMay the Holy Spirit reveal these truths in a personal manner through this festival and by his Holy Word. ... (John 1:29) and

o They looked forward, but Now we celebrate Looking back—to the cross

o Memorial to spiritual redemption

o “Freedom from slavery to sin to freedom in the victorious, spirit-filled Christian life”

Therefore, I ask that you seriously ponder each of the scriptures and prayers that we will be reading this evening and that you may truly observe and recognize the story of our redemption by our God, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Jacob who condescended to cloak himself in the humanity of Jesus of Nazareth. I also encourage you to sincerely seek God on your own as the Holy Spirit reveals the truth sin in your life and the salvation purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ. May the Holy Spirit reveal these truths in a personal manner through this festival and by his Holy Word.

“Let us now begin the Christ Our Passover Seder Festival”

[slide 8] ALL SAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has kept us in life and has preserved us, and has enabled us to reach this season so that we might celebrate this festival in commemoration of our Messiah, Jesus the Christ. Amen

[Leader says a Prayer of thanks]

The Feast begins with an explanation of the Unleavened Bread…

[slide 9] READER 1: "Celebrate the Feast of Unleavened Bread, because it was on this very day that I brought your divisions out of Egypt. Celebrate this day as a lasting ordinance for the generations to come." (Exodus 12:17)

[slide 10] READER 2: And he took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." (Luke 22:19)

Unleavened Bread

o READ Exodus 12:14-28 [Numbers 28:17-25] [SLIDES 11a]

Begins with the Passover Meal

7 days of no “leaven”

Why?

Leaven rep. Sinfulness—1 Cor 5:6-8 “…Christ our Passover Lamb…”

Week of contemplation of sin—2 Cor 13:5 “…examine yourself…”

o Nullification

3

Search the house - [SLIDES 11b]

Bring all the leaven! Through it away!

[everyone looks for leaven]

[trash it and begin Passover]

Reminder : Spend the week contemplating your sinfulness!

The Lighting of the Candles [slide 12]

LEADER: This festival is a family event that is designed to be observed in the home. Therefore, in order to accommodate this corporate arrangement, you will need to choose a “Father” and a “Mother” for each table. They will have certain responsibilities throughout the Seder.

Light is a symbol of God's presence. Lighting candles during holidays often reminds us that JESUS is our light. It is also written in Genesis that the offspring of a woman would crush the serpent's head. "And I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and hers; he will crush your head, and you will strike his heel." (Genesis 3:15) It is through a woman that our salvation would come, our hope, our light. It is by the seed of a woman that Jesus was born. Therefore, a woman will begin with the lighting of the festival lights.

[“Mother” lights the candle]

[slide 13] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by your WORD, and has ALLOWED us to kindle the Festival lights. Amen.

The First Cup—sanctification [KADESH] [slide 14]

LEADER: The Seder plate has many items that we will use to experience the Passover using our senses. This helps to make us physically aware of the REALITY of our God and his great love for us. He loved us so much that he would send his son, JESUS, to purchase us with his blood. It is a great privilege to celebrate this festival together as believers in Jesus as Messiah whether Jew or Gentile.

LEADER: During the Passover Seder we will drink four glasses of juice: The Cup of Sanctification, the Cup of Praise, The Cup of Redemption and the Cup of Acceptance. We will say the traditional prayer before drinking each cup. I would also like to point out that there are two meanings to each cup. There is the original meaning connected with the first Passover and then there is manner in which Jesus fulfilled it. The four cups follow the model of the four “I will” promises of God found in Exodus 6:6-7:

[slide 15] ALL READ:

"6 I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians. I will free you from being slaves to them, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and with mighty acts of judgment.

4

Page 5: MessianicSeder - calvaryeverett.com€¦  · Web viewMay the Holy Spirit reveal these truths in a personal manner through this festival and by his Holy Word. ... (John 1:29) and

7 I will take you as my own people, and I will be your God. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God, who brought you out from under the yoke of the Egyptians." (Exodus 6:6-7)

[slide 16a-d]

SANCTIFICATION: I WILL BRING YOU OUT…Original - We are to be clean of yeast.Fulfillment - We are to be clean of sin -- Jesus is the only way to be cleansed of our sins.

JUDGMENT OF THE PLAGUES: I WILL FREE YOU FROM SLAVERY…Original - Remembrance of the Plagues in EgyptFulfillment - Remembrance of our trials and tribulations - develops perseverance, humility and maturity in our walk with the Lord

REDEMPTION: I WILL REDEEM YOU…Original - Symbolizes the blood of the Passover lamb who saved the Israelites from deathFulfillment - Jesus is our Passover Lamb who's blood saved us from death. This cup is the cup used in communion or The Lord's Supper.

ACCEPTANCE AND PRAISE: I WILL TAKE YOU TO BE MY PEOPLE… I WILL BE YOUR GOD…Original - Give thanks to God for guiding the Israelites out of EgyptFulfillment – We drink, recognizing the atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross for our sins in the PAST and receiving the eternal life that is promised through Christ Jesus our Lord [ROMANS 6:23]. We drink, asking for the Holy Spirit’s help in gaining victory over sin in the PRESENT. We drink, proclaiming the Lord’s death until he comes to deliver us from the very presence of sin in the FUTURE!

[slide 17] READER 3: [26] If we deliberately keep on sinning after we have received the knowledge of the truth, no sacrifice for sins is left, [27] but only a fearful expectation of judgment and of raging fire that will consume the enemies of God. [28] Anyone who rejected the law of Moses died without mercy on the testimony of two or three witnesses. [29] How much more severely do you think a man deserves to be punished who has trampled the Son of God under foot, who has treated as an unholy thing the blood of the covenant that sanctified him, and who has insulted the Spirit of grace? (Hebrews 10:26-29)

[slide 18] READER 4: [14] When the hour came, Jesus and his apostles reclined at the table. [15] And he said to them, "I have eagerly desired to eat this Passover with you before I suffer. [16] For I tell you, I will not eat it again until it finds fulfillment in the kingdom of God." [17] After taking the cup, he gave thanks and said, "Take this and divide it among you. [18] For I tell you I will not drink again of the fruit of the vine until the kingdom of God comes." (Luke 22:14-18)

The First Cup… Sanctification

LEADER: Sanctification is the first step to our salvation. God is holy and we cannot enter His presence with sin. He established the sacrificial system for ritual purification of our sin. Jesus, however, is the ultimate sacrifice, bringing FULL ATONEMENT, so we can be in God's presence without wrath for eternity!. May we all be sanctified through the blood of the Lamb, Jesus.

[slide 19] READER 5: “And that is what some of you were. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and the by the Spirit of our God.” (1 Corinthians 6:11)

LEADER : Let us lift the first cup, the Cup of Sanctification, and bless the Lord for His abundant giving.

[slide 20] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who created the fruit of the vine.

[Drink the first cup of juice]

Washing of the Hands [URECHATZ] [slide 21]

[slide 22] READER 1: (Psalm 26:6) “I wash my hands in innocence and go around your altar, O LORD.”

[slide 23] READER 2: (Psalm 24:1-6)

[1] The earth is the LORD's, and everything in it,       the world, and all who live in it;[2] for he founded it upon the seas       and established it upon the waters.[3] Who may ascend the hill of the LORD?       Who may stand in his holy place?[4] He who has clean hands and a pure heart,       who does not lift up his soul to an idol       or swear by what is false.[5] He will receive blessing from the LORD       and vindication from God his Savior.[6] Such is the generation of those who seek him,       who seek your face, O God of Jacob.

SONG: Give us Clean Hands [Slides 24-25]

We bow our hearts, We bend our knees, O Spirit come make us humbleWe turn our eyes, from evil things, O Lord we cast down our idols slide 24

So give us clean hands, give us pure heartsLet us not lift our souls to another

Oh give us clean hands, give us pure heartsLet us not lift our souls to another

Oh God let us be a generation that seeksWho seeks Your face, Oh God of Jacob slide 25

LEADER: Let us wash our hands. As we wash, let us renew our commitment to God to have "clean hands and a pure heart".

[Dip hands into water and then dry and pass it on; then use sanitizer if necessary]6

Page 7: MessianicSeder - calvaryeverett.com€¦  · Web viewMay the Holy Spirit reveal these truths in a personal manner through this festival and by his Holy Word. ... (John 1:29) and

[slide 26] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who has sanctified us by your commandments, and has washed us clean through Jesus Christ.

The Parsley [KARPAS] [slide 27]

[slide 28] READER 4: [23b] The Israelites groaned in their slavery and cried out, and their cry for help because of their slavery went up to God. [24] God heard their groaning and he remembered his covenant with Abraham, with Isaac and with Jacob. [25] So God looked on the Israelites and was concerned about them. (Exodus 2:23b-25)

LEADER: We will take the parsley and we will dip it into the salt water. We do this to symbolize the tears and pain of the Israelites in Egypt which is also a picture of the pain of slavery to sin.

LEADER: The parsley and salt water also reminds us of the hyssop which was used to mark the doors with the lamb’s blood and of the salty vinegar which was offered to Jesus on the cross with a hyssop branch.

After the following prayer, take the parsley and dip it into the salt water and remember that even though we have painful circumstances in our lives, we will however put our faith in Him who is able to sustain us through our tribulations and who will one day redeem us from them completely!

[slide 29] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who creates the fruit of the earth.

[Dip the parsley in the salt water twice, then eat it]

The Afikoman [YACHATZ] [slide 30]

[slide 31] READER 5: So the people took their dough before the yeast was added, and carried it on their shoulders in kneading troughs wrapped in clothing. (Exodus 12:34)

[slide 32] READER 1: [6b] Don't you know that a little yeast works through the whole batch of dough? [7] Get rid of the old yeast that you may be a new batch without yeast--as you really are. For Christ, our Passover lamb, has been sacrificed. [8] Therefore let us keep the Festival, not with the old yeast, the yeast of malice and wickedness, but with bread without yeast, the bread of sincerity and truth. (1 Corinthians 5:6b-8)

LEADER: (Lifting the three matzah pouch) We traditionally put three Matzahs on our Seder plate into a pouch called The Unity. The Unity is a symbol of the unique unity of the Godhead manifested in three persons: The Father, The Son, and the Holy Spirit.

[Remove and rip the middle matzah] The table “fathers” and I will now take out the middle piece, the Bread of Affliction. We now rip the middle piece. We will eat one half and the other half is called the a-fi-ko-man, [ah-fee-KOH-men] It will be the prize later. [Wrap the afikoman in a cloth, explaining to the “Fathers” to follow suit ]

I will hide the afikoman and later the children can try to find it to return it for a reward on Resurrection Sunday morning. Each of you may take a piece of the afikoman and hide it for the children to find on that glorious day. This represents Jesus’ death, burial and resurrection from the dead!

7

[slide 33] ALL SAY: In haste they went out of Egypt.

The Telling [MAGGID] [slide 34 ]

LEADER: Now we move into The Telling or the Haggadah. This is where we tell the story of the original Passover in Egypt. As we read in Exodus 13:8-11 previously, God commanded the Israelites to TELL this story to the posterity as a lasting ordinance.

In doing so, we are teaching our children valuable aspects of God and his dealings with his people. Consider the following verses:

[slide 35] READER 2: [4] Hear, O Israel: The LORD our God, the LORD is one. [5] Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength. [6] These commandments that I give you today are to be upon your hearts. [7] Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. [8] Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. [9] Write them on the doorframes of your houses and on your gates. (Deuteronomy 6:4-9)

[slide 36] READER 3: [20] In the future, when your son asks you, "What is the meaning of the stipulations, decrees and laws the LORD our God has commanded you?" [21] tell him: "We were slaves of Pharaoh in Egypt, but the LORD brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand. [22] Before our eyes the LORD sent miraculous signs and wonders--great and terrible--upon Egypt and Pharaoh and his whole household. [23] But he brought us out from there to bring us in and give us the land that he promised on oath to our forefathers. [24] The LORD commanded us to obey all these decrees and to fear the LORD our God, so that we might always prosper and be kept alive, as is the case today." (Deuteronomy 6:20-24)

[slide 37] READER 4: [26] And when your children ask you, "What does this ceremony mean to you?" [27] then tell them, "It is the Passover sacrifice to the LORD, who passed over the houses of the Israelites in Egypt and spared our homes when he struck down the Egyptians." (Exodus 12:26-27)

LEADER: WE will now ask a child among us to rise and ask us some questions about this festival so that we might teach them what it is we’re doing and why.

YOUNG CHILD: (Rising to ask the questions) [slide 38]

“How different this night is from all other nights!” o On all other nights we eat regular bread or unleavened bread. On this night we eat only

unleavened bread…o On all other nights we eat all kinds of vegetables; on this night we eat only bitter herbs…o On all other nights we do not dip our vegetables even once; on this night we dip them twice…

[This refers to dipping the parsely twice in salt water before eating it]o Why is tonight so different?

LEADER: Tonight is different from all other nights because tonight we will remember what God has done for his people and what He is GOING TO DO for His people through our Messiah Jesus the Christ!

[slide 39] ALL PRAY: Blessed is the Almighty God who has given the Word of God to His people.

8

WE WILL NOW TELL [haggadah] THE STORY OF THE PASSOVER: [slide 40a-d]

READER: The Israelites were already in the land of Egypt. They became fertile and multiplied and increased very greatly, so that the land was filled with them. A new king arose over Egypt, who did not know Joseph, and imposed great labor and hardship on the Israelites. But the more the Israelites were oppressed, the more they increased and spread out. The king then ordered that all newborn baby boys be killed. The Pharaoh charged all his people, saying "every boy that is born you shall throw into the Nile, but let every girl live."

A Levite woman conceived and bore a son and hid him for three months. After that time, she prepared a wicker basket and laid the child in the basket and placed it among the reeds by the bank of the Nile. The daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe in the Nile and saw the basket among the reeds and had her slave girl fetch the basket. The Pharaoh's daughter took pity on the child and made him her own son. She named him Moses, explaining, "I drew him out of water."

Moses grew and had learned of his heritage. After witnessing an Egyptian beating an Israelite, he struck down the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. When Pharaoh learned of the matter, he sought to kill Moses, but Moses fled from Pharaoh. He arrived in the land of Midian, where he married his wife, Zipporah.

A long time had gone by and the king of Egypt died. The Israelites were groaning under bondage and cried out to God. God heard their cries. God appeared to Moses in a burning bush telling him that he would use Moses to lead His people out of Egypt into a land "flowing with milk and honey." So Moses returned to Egypt and took the rod of God with him.

Moses and his brother Aaron went to the Pharaoh to ask for the release of their people, but the Pharaoh's heart was hardened against the Israelites and would not release them from the bondage of slavery. Each time the Pharaoh refused to let the Israelites go, the land of Egypt came under a great plague. With the tenth and most awful plague, the heart of Pharaoh would be pierced

.

[slide 41] ALL READ: "On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn--both men and animals--and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord. (Exodus 12:12)

[slide 42] READER 5: And the blood on the houses where you are staying shall be a sign for you: when I see the blood, I will pass over you, so that no plague will destroy you when I strike the land of Egypt. (Exodus 12:13 NJPS)

[slide 43] READER 1: [14] This day shall be to you one of remembrance: you shall celebrate it as a festival to the Lord throughout the ages; you shall celebrate it as an institution for all time. [15] Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; on the very first day you shall remove leaven from your houses, for whoever eats leavened bread from the first day to the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. [16] You shall celebrate a sacred occasion on the first day, and a sacred occasion on the seventh day;  no work at all shall be done on them; only what every person is to eat, that alone may be prepared for you. [17] You shall observe the Feast of Unleavened Bread, for on this very day I brought your ranks out of the land of Egypt; you shall observe this day throughout the ages as an institution for all time. (Exodus 12:14-17 NJPS)

9

Page 10: MessianicSeder - calvaryeverett.com€¦  · Web viewMay the Holy Spirit reveal these truths in a personal manner through this festival and by his Holy Word. ... (John 1:29) and

LEADER: Let us take our cups a second time. A full cup is a sign of joy and on this night we are filled with joy in remembrance of God's mighty deliverance. We must also remember the great sacrifice at which redemption was purchased. Lives were sacrificed to bring the Israelites out of the bondage of Egypt. As we recite each plague, let us dip our little finger into the cup, and place one mark on our plate, reducing the fullness of our cup of joy this night. [HEADS OF TABLES]

[slide 44] ALL SAY:

Blood! Frogs! Gnats! Flies! Disease to

Livestock! Boils! Hail! Locusts! Darkness! Death of the

Firstborn!

INSTRUCTIONS:(Don't say this)

With the announcement of each plague, dip a finger into the juice and place a mark around the plate’s edge.

Do not drink the second cup yet!

ONE LAST DROP: This last drop is to remind us of the great price it cost Jesus--His very life--to save us from our sins and bring us the joy of salvation.

LEADER: Rabbi Gamaliel, grandson of Rabbi Hillel and teacher of Paul, the Apostle, taught that in recounting the Passover story one must explain three things: The Passover Lamb, Unleavened Bread, and the Bitter Herbs.

LEADER: BITTER HERBS (Lifting the Bitter Herb): [slide 45a]

Why do we eat bitter herbs? We eat bitter herbs because of the hardship that the Israelites had to bear. As it is written: They made their lives bitter with hard labor in brick and mortar and with all kinds of work in the fields; in all their hard labor the Egyptians used them ruthlessly. (Exodus 1:14)

More importantly, we see the bitterness of bondage to sin here. Just as the Israelites were enslaved in Egypt, we were enslaved to sin in the world. These bitter herbs remind us of that awful bitterness before salvation .

LEADER: MATZAH (Lifting the other half of the Middle Matzah): [slide 45b]

Why do we eat this unleavened bread? The dough did not have time to rise before God revealed Himself to them and redeem them. As it is written: With the dough they had brought from Egypt, they baked cakes of unleavened bread. The dough was without yeast because they had been driven out of Egypt and did not have time to prepare food for themselves. (Exodus 12:39)

10

Page 11: MessianicSeder - calvaryeverett.com€¦  · Web viewMay the Holy Spirit reveal these truths in a personal manner through this festival and by his Holy Word. ... (John 1:29) and

The most important symbol, however, is that leaven represents sin (remember 1 Cor 5:6-8). Jesus claimed at the Last Supper that His body was represented here. “He who knew no sin…” (2 Cor 5:21) and he was therefore the only human who has ever been qualified to offer his body as a sacrifice for sin, because he was sinless.

LEADER: “God made Him who had no sin to become the sin offering for us, that in Him we might become the righteousness of God,.” 2 Corinthians 5:21.

LEADER: PASSOVER LAMB: [slide 46a]

It is God that we honor in remembering that He passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians. Had he not, we would have no way of salvation, for salvation is of the Jews!

(Lifting the shank bone of a lamb) The shank bone reminds us of the lamb whose blood marked the doors of the Israelites. We read in Exodus that the lamb was to be without defect, brought into the household and cared for. It was then at twilight, the fourteenth day of the month, that the Israelites were to slaughter the lamb and put the blood on the sides and tops of the doorframes. God gave His people instructions that only through obedience would they be spared from the angel of death.

Isaiah told of the coming Messiah, that He would be led like a lamb to the slaughter. Jesus the Lamb: When Jesus began his ministry, John the Baptist said: “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world,” (John 1:29) and later it says “Worthy is the Lamb, who was slain, to receive power and wealth and wisdom and strength and honor and glory and praise!" (Revelation 5:12)

He fulfilled all the requirements for the Passover lamb: he was a male without spot or blemish, he was completely innocent and sinless; his bones were not broken, he was taken outside the city and slaughtered to pay the penalty for sin as His blood was shed on the cross (sides and top of door make a cross! [CLICK46b] ) We know that Jesus was our final blood atonement so that we would be freed from the bondage of sin and we would be passed over from death to life, from darkness to his marvelous light.

Because Jesus was sacrificed as the Passover Lamb, there is no need for the lamb to be slaughtered and eaten during the Passover Meal. God allowed the temple to be destroyed in 70 ad and there is no place to offer a true sacrifice, anyway!

[slide 47] READER 2: The Israelites were saved by God and not an angel or any other messenger. For it is written: "On that same night I will pass through Egypt and strike down every firstborn--both men and animals--and I will bring judgment on all the gods of Egypt. I am the Lord!" (Exodus 12:12)

LEADER: And now we bless our second cup of juice, the Cup of Plagues. For this is the second of the four promises, “I will free you from slavery…”

[slide 48] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who created the fruit of the vine.

[Drink the second cup of juice]

Blessing of the Matzah [MOTZI] [slide 51]

LEADER: We will now bless the matzah as a food.

[slide 52] ALL PRAY: (Leader and “Fathers” holding all the matzah on the seder plate) Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

[slide 57] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, Who has sanctified us with His commandments, and has allowed us to eat the Bitter Herbs.

(At this point, everyone eat a portion of the TOP matzah with bitter herbs in it, dipped in the choroset. DO NOT take a drink yet!!!)

LEADER: The bitterness is awful to the taste, but it is a distinct reminder of the bitterness of slavery in Egypt as well as the bondage to sin in our lives.

It is dipped into the Choroset symbolizing our hope that we have of redemption in the midst of bondage because the Lord promised deliverance. For the Israelites it would be through Moses and the exodus but for all believers it would be through the Messiah and the cross.

More Bitter Herbs [KORECH] [slide 58]

[slide 59] ALL READ: “And they shall eat the flesh in that night, roast with fire, and unleavened bread; and with bitter herbs they shall eat it. (Exodus 12:8)

(Everyone eat the bottom matzah with bitter herbs and choroset. NO DRINKING YET!!!)

LEADER: Let us now remember the grace, mercy and love that God has for each of us, for He sent Jesus, our Messiah, to be our Passover Lamb. We too, like the Israelites released from the bondage of slavery, can be saved from the bondage of sin.

[Eat the broken half-Matzah with bitter herbs and charoset. NO DRINK YET!!!]

The Passover Dinner [SHULCHAN ORECH] [slide 60]

The Shulchan Orech is not read -- these are directions

We’re going to break to eat the Passover Supper. NOW YOU CAN DRINK!

Leader says a prayer.

Everyone returns to the Passover Seder after dinner/dessert.

But first… Dance Time – Juanita Kolbeck

The Afikoman [TZAFUN] [slide 61]

LEADER: This is usually the time when the Afikoman would be consumed. That middle piece of the Unity that was taken out and hidden temporarily. It is about the Afikoman that Jesus said "This is my body given for you; do this in remembrance of me." (Luke 22:19) The Passover cannot be completed without the afikoman, nor can our redemption be complete without Jesus, the Bread of Life, our Messiah, who gave his life for us! It isn’t complete until we celebrate his resurrection! After you eat it, you will have Partaken of the Trinity

[slide 62] ALL PRAY: Blessed are You, O Lord our God, King of the Universe, who brings forth bread from the earth.

LEADER: What is the significance of the Afikoman? Well, first of all it is the only Greek word in the entire Passover Celebration. The Jewish people do not fully understand it because they don’t believe Jesus was and is the Messiah. Consider the following passage:

LEADER: [52:13] See, my servant will act wisely; he will be raised and lifted up and highly exalted. [14] Just as there were many who were appalled at him-- his appearance was so disfigured beyond that of any man and his form marred beyond human likeness-- [15] so will he sprinkle many nations, and kings will shut their mouths because of him. For what they were not told, they will see, and what they have not heard, they will understand. [53:1] Who has believed our message and to whom has the arm of the LORD been revealed? [2] He grew up before him like a tender shoot, and like a root out of dry ground. He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him, nothing in his appearance that we should desire him. [3] He was despised and rejected by men, a man of sorrows, and familiar with suffering. Like one from whom men hide their faces he was despised, and we esteemed him not. [4] Surely he took up our infirmities and carried our sorrows, yet we considered him stricken by God, smitten by him, and afflicted. [5] But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was upon him, and by his wounds we are healed. [6] We all, like sheep, have gone astray, each of us has turned to his own way; and the LORD has laid on him the iniquity of us all. [7] He was oppressed and afflicted, yet he did not open his mouth; he was led like a lamb to the slaughter, and as a sheep before her shearers is silent, so he did not open his mouth. [8] By oppression and judgment he was taken away. And who can speak of his descendants? For he was cut off from the land of the living; for the transgression of my people he was stricken. (Isaiah 52:13-53:8)

Afikoman means “He came” and clearly represents Jesus whose body was ripped and torn for our salvation; he was killed for us and placed in a tomb from which he arose 3 days later.

Time permitting: see also Zechariah 12:10 / Daniel 9:26 / Psalm 16:10 & 22:16

NOTE: When Jesus was crucified, he was killed on the 14th of the month of Nisan of the Hebrew calendar. That was precisely on Passover as thousands of lambs were being slaughtered not too far away. The calendar of that year allowed for a precise three day break between Passover and Firstfruits. Jesus resurrected three days later in fulfillment of this third spring feast. That day is always celebrated on the day after the Sabbath after Passover. Thus it is always on a Sunday. Therefore I have chosen to complete the symbolism of the Afikoman by hiding it and not partaking of it until Sunday morning as we celebrate the resurrection. Because Passover is fixed and Firstfruits changes to be on Sunday, this is not always the three days as it was with Jesus.

However, I invite you to start a new tradition with your family. Observe the Passover with your family. In addition to or instead of hiding Easter eggs, hide the Afikoman for the kids to find and receive a prize on Sunday morning before church. Then teach them valuable lessons about the love and mercy of God in redeeming us sinful humanity!

3rd and 4th Cups [BARECH] [slide 63]

[slide 64] READER 3: [12] How can I repay the LORD for all his goodness to me? [13] I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD. [14] I will fulfill my vows to the LORD in the presence of all his people. (Psalm 116:12-14)

LEADER: Let us take our cups for the third time this evening. (Lifting the cup) This is the Cup of Redemption, symbolizing the blood of the Passover Lamb who fulfills the third of the four promises of God which is “I will redeem you with an outstretched arm…” It was the third cup "after supper", which Jesus identified as being fulfilled in himself -- "This cup is the new covenant in my blood, which is poured out for you." (Luke 22:20)

[slide 65] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who created the fruit of the vine.

[Drink the third cup of juice]

LEADER: (Lifting the extra cup for Elijah) The theme of the first part of the festival before the meal / dessert was focused upon the redemption of the Israelites from Egypt. We now move to a focus that is more about the Messianic redemption.

You may have noticed that I have a place setting that has not been touched throughout the meal. This is the traditional place for Elijah. The prophets Malachi and Isaiah both foretold that Elijah would come to prepare the way of the Messiah. Therefore, we have a setting for him indicating our readiness to receive the Prophet Elijah, herald of the Messiah. We will now open the door as well symbolizing our eagerness for the prophet because of our great desire for the Messiah to return.

(Have a child open the door.)

[slide 66] ALL READ: "See, I will send you the prophet Elijah before that great and dreadful day of the LORD comes." (Malachi 4:5)

LEADER: Elijah was taken up into heaven by a great whirlwind. We wait for him today to announce the second coming of our Messiah, Son of David.

[slide 67] READER 4: Before the birth of John the Baptizer, an angel of the Lord said, "And he will go on before the Lord, in the spirit and power of Elijah, to turn the hearts of the fathers to their children and the disobedient to the wisdom of the righteous--to make ready a people prepared for the Lord." (Luke 1:17)

[slide 68] READER 5: Later, Jesus spoke of John, "And if you are willing to accept it, he is the Elijah who was to come." (Matthew 11:14)

15

[slide 69] READER 1: It was this same John who saw Jesus and declared, "Look, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!" (John 1:29)

LEADER: Just as John the Baptist prepared the way the first time, Elijah will come and prepare the way the second time (Revelation 11—two witnesses).

Let us take our fourth cup, the Cup of Acceptance and give thanks to God!

[slide 70] ALL PRAY: Blessed are you, O Lord our God, Ruler of the Universe, who created the fruit of the vine.

[DO NOT Drink the fourth cup of juice yet]

The HALLEL [slide 71]

LEADER: (Text is from Psalm 118)

Ps 118:1-29

Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good;his love endures forever. 2 Let Israel say: "His love endures forever." 3 Let the house of Aaron say: "His love endures forever." 4 Let those who fear the LORD say: "His love endures forever." 5 In my anguish I cried to the LORD, and he answered by setting me free. 6 The LORD is with me; I will not be afraid .What can man do to me? 7 The LORD is with me; he is my helper. I will look in triumph on my enemies. 8 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in man. 9 It is better to take refuge in the LORD than to trust in princes. 10 All the nations surrounded me, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 11 They surrounded me on every side, but in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 12 They swarmed around me like bees, but they died out as quickly as burning thorns; in the name of the LORD I cut them off. 13 I was pushed back and about to fall, but the LORD helped me. 14 The LORD is my strength and my song; he has become my salvation. 15 Shouts of joy and victory resound in the tents of the righteous: "The LORD's right hand has done mighty things! 16 The LORD's right hand is lifted high; the LORD's right hand has done mighty things!" 17 I will not die but live, and will proclaim what the LORD has done. 18 The LORD has chastened me severely, but he has not given me over to death. 19 Open for me the gates of righteousness; I will enter and give thanks to the LORD. 20 This is the gate of the LORD through which the righteous may enter. 21 I will give you thanks, for you answered me; you have become my salvation. 22 The stone the builders rejected has become the capstone; 23 the LORD has done this, and it is marvelous in our eyes. 24 This is the day the LORD has made; let us rejoice and be glad in it. 25 O LORD, save us; O LORD, grant us success.

With boughs in hand, join in the festal procession up to the horns of the altar. 28 You are my God, and I will give you thanks; you are my God, and I will exalt you. 29 Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures forever. Next Year in Jerusalem [NIRTZAH] [slide 80]

LEADER: [31] "The time is coming," declares the LORD, "when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and with the house of Judah. [32] It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers when I took them by the hand to lead them out of Egypt, because they broke my covenant, though I was a husband to them, " declares the LORD. [33] "This is the covenant I will make with the house of Israel after that time," declares the LORD. "I will put my law in their minds and write it on their hearts. I will be their God, and they will be my people. [34] No longer will a man teach his neighbor, or a man his brother, saying, 'Know the

LORD,' because they will all know me, from the least of them to the greatest," declares the LORD. "For I will forgive their wickedness and will remember their sins no more." (Jeremiah 31:31-34)

LEADER: [12] Therefore, since we have such a hope, we are very bold. [13] We are not like Moses, who would put a veil over his face to keep the Israelites from gazing at it while the radiance was fading away. [14] But their minds were made dull, for to this day the same veil remains when the old covenant is read. It has not been removed, because only in Christ is it taken away. [15] Even to this day when Moses is read, a veil covers their hearts. [16] But whenever anyone turns to the Lord, the veil is taken away. [17] Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is, there is freedom. [18] And we, who with unveiled faces all reflect the Lord's glory, are being transformed into his likeness with ever-increasing glory, which comes from the Lord, who is the Spirit. (2 Corinthians 3:12-18)

LEADER: We have almost finished with our Passover Seder. Before drinking this last cup, understand its meaning. It is the cup of acceptance. It fulfills the fourth of the four promises of God where he said “I will take you to be my people…” and “…I will be your God…” If you drink it, you are not only commemorating an event that happened some 3,000 years ago, but you will be recognizing how Jesus is the messiah which that event foreshadowed and that he is the One who fulfills all of its elements… You will be acknowledging Jesus as Lord and Savior of your life. This is no small thing.

The Bible says that “all have sinned” and that “the wages of sin is death…” But that isn’t all. It also says that “the gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord.” If you confess with your mouth that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved. It is that simple.

Jesus is indeed the Lamb of God who died so that we might be passed over by the judgment and wrath of God Almighty. Even more so, he ATONES for our sins taking the wrath completely upon himself and imputing upon YOU all of his righteousness.

All the prophecies pertaining to the first coming of the Messiah have already been fulfilled by Jesus. If you were to go back and read the prophecies, you would clearly see that it would be impossible for anyone else to fulfill these prophecies. So we can look into and study the prophets and study Jesus's ministry and see the true fulfillment of God's word. We can also trust wholeheartedly that HE WILL RETURN and his recompense will be with him… judgment to those who are found without him and GRACE for those who are found to have him.

We drink, therefore, recognizing the atoning sacrifice of Christ on the cross for our sins in the PAST and receiving the eternal life that is promised through Christ Jesus our Lord [ROMANS 6:23].

We drink, therefore, asking for the Holy Spirit’s help in gaining victory over sin in the PRESENT that we might be sanctified and transformed into his image.

We drink, therefore, proclaiming the Lord’s death until he comes to deliver us from the very presence of sin in the FUTURE!

[If you agree, then DRINK ON!]
