Welcome & Announcements

Mission Statement “At Messiah Lutheran Church, we seek to answer God’s call to love”

Confession and Forgiveness Blessed be the holy Trinity, + one God, who forgives all our sin, whose mercy endures forever. Amen.

Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: cleanse the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us.

Prayer of the Day Lord God, we have not borne the fruit you have desired of us, and yet you show us mercy. Plant the seeds of grace within us, that our lives might show forth your glory, for the sake of Jesus, Amen.

Kyrie p. 138

Psalm: Psalm 80:7-19 (read responsively) Restore us, O God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved. You brought a vine out of Egypt; you drove out the nations and planted it. You cleared the ground for it; it took deep root and filled the land. The mountains were covered with its shade, the mighty cedars with its branches; it sent out its branches to the sea, and its shoots to the River. Why then have you broken down its walls, so that all who pass along the way pluck its fruit? The boar from the forest ravages it, and all that move in the field feed on it. Turn again, O God of hosts; look down from heaven, and see; have regard for this vine, the stock that your right hand planted. They have burned it with fire, they have cut it down; may they perish at the rebuke of your countenance. But let your hand be upon the one at your right hand, the one whom you made strong for yourself. Then we will never turn back from you; give us life, and we will call on your name. Restore us, O Lord God of hosts; let your face shine, that we may be saved.

Reading: Isaiah 5:1-7; 11:1-5 Let me sing for my beloved my love-song concerning his vineyard: My be-loved had a vineyard on a very fertile hill. He dug it and cleared it of stones, and planted it with choice vines; he built a watchtower in the midst of it, and hewed out a wine vat in it; he expected it to yield grapes, but it yielded wild grapes. And now, inhabitants of Jerusalem and people of Judah, judge be-tween me and my vineyard. What more was there to do for my vineyard that I have not done in it? When I expected it to yield grapes, why did it yield wild grapes? And now I will tell you what I will do to my vineyard. I will remove its hedge, and it shall be devoured; I will break down its wall, and it shall be trampled down. I will make it a waste; it shall not be pruned or hoed, and it

Greeting The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

Processional Hymn #634 “All Hail the Power of Jesus’ Name!” vs 1-4

Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

God, who is rich in mercy, loved us even when we were dead in sin, and made us alive together with Christ. By grace you have been saved. In the name of + Jesus Christ, your sins are forgiven. Almighty God strengthen you with power through the Holy Spirit, that Christ may live in your hearts through faith. Amen.

Hymn of Praise “Glory to God” p. 139

shall be overgrown with briers and thorns; I will also command the clouds that they rain no rain upon it. For the vineyard of the Lord of hosts is the house of Israel, and the people of Judah are his pleasant planting; he expected justice, but saw bloodshed; righteousness, but heard a cry!A shoot shall come out from the stump of Jesse, and a branch shall grow out of his roots. The spirit of the Lord shall rest on him, the spirit of wisdom and understanding, the spirit of counsel and might, the spirit of knowledge and the fear of the Lord. His delight shall be in the fear of the Lord. He shall not judge by what his eyes see, or decide by what his ears hear; but with righteousness he shall judge the poor, and decide with equity for the meek of the earth; he shall strike the earth with the rod of his mouth, and with the breath of his lips he shall kill the wicked. Righteousness shall be the belt around his waist, and faithfulness the belt around his loins.Word of God, Word of Life. Thanks be to God.

Apostles’ Creed I believe in God, the Father almighty, creator of heaven and earth.I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried; he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers Treasuring your promise to hear us when we call, we pray for the church, those in need, and all of your creation. A brief silence.

We give thanks that you are righteous and forgiving in dealing with us, O Lord. Give us this same spirit when we encounter those who have wronged, injured, or disappointed us. Heal our divisions and make us kind and ten-derhearted with one another. Merciful God, Hear our prayer.

You have created all things good and expect good returns from your efforts. And yet we have laid waste to this beautiful earth we were meant to protect and use wisely. Return us to our origins: faithful stewards of your blessings, and responsible caregivers for the planet and its inhabitants. Merciful God, Hear our prayer.

The harvest is plentiful, but not all share equally in its benefits, great shep-herd. Empower those who strive for a more just distribution of resources around the globe, that their efforts might result in a truer representation of your vision for a peaceful world. Merciful God, Hear our prayer.

There can be no healing without confession, which opens the way for what is broken to be made whole again. Heal this aching world and forgive the multiple ways we inflict pain upon one another, which hurts us as much as it does our targets. Uphold the weak and suffering, especially Patricia Harris, Gail Forsberg, Nancy Peterson, Thanh, Karen Johnson, Kristina Asta, Herb Grenke, Pat Frenn, Pat Lelvis, Marilyn Voce, Jim Elsenbroek, Nancy & family, Oscar, Vanessa, Laura, Fátima, Flor, Cruz, Alison Cory, Pam, Leah Rodda, Rose Collins, Kathy, Lois, John, Kendal, Sandy, Don Dreisbach, Gary, Sierra, Charlene Avery, Nai, Cam & his family, Liz Kro. Merciful God, Hear our prayer.

Bless those who work in hospitals, care centers, and individually to aid in your ministry of healing. Merciful God, Hear our prayer.

Open your arms to all in need, those for whom we pray today and all those whose trials we do not know. For we trust that you are merciful and will hear us, according to the compassion of Jesus our savior, Amen.

Sharing of the Peace

Gospel: Mark 12:1-3Glory to you, O Lord.

Then he began to speak to them in parables. “A man planted a vineyard, put a fence around it, dug a pit for the wine press, and built a watchtower; then he leased it to tenants and went to another country. 2When the season came, he sent a slave to the tenants to collect from them his share of the produce of the vineyard. 3But they seized him, and beat him, and sent him away empty-handed.P: The Gospel of the Lord. C: Praise to you, O Christ!

Welcome

Messiah Lutheran Church seeks to be a welcoming community for all people. This includes people of every race, ability, sexual orientation and identity, ethnic background, economic grouping, religious affiliation, and political persuasion. We do this simply because God created all people in God’s own image and Christ Jesus came so all people might have abundant and eternal life. We may not always be as welcoming as we should be, but this is our intention—all are welcome!

The Means of Grace As Lutherans, we believe that God comes to us in love through the means of grace: the preaching of the Word and the gift of two Sacraments--Baptism and Communion. Christ Jesus is the host at the Holy Communion table, welcoming all people to be fed. If you haven't been baptized, we also invite you to consider baptism. The pastors would be delighted to speak with you about this.
