Report of the Outreach Committee – Funding MeetingThe St. James Social Outreach Committee met at noon on July 13, 2014, for the purpose of making funding decisions regarding the 24 applications received for the granting year. Present were Shirley Young (chair), Phillip Wright, Gerry Sulzer, Charlie Frey, Alan Miller, Chris Frink, Kerry Capron, Elizabeth Whitley, Katherine Martin, Bahin Leonard, and Kaki Heilegenthal. Copper Alvarez was absent but had reviewed several of the applications.

The Outreach Committee decided to focus the parish’s funding on the areas of greatest need — food, medical services, shelter and education — for the people of greatest need, delivered by the most effective means. In addition, they evaluated each individual proposal for effectiveness. The Cub Scout Pack at St. James was slightly outside these parameters but the committee believed support of their endeavors, including growing a generation of charitable givers, was also important.

In Baton Rouge area programs, Cancer Services was awarded $3,330 for financial assistance to low-income patients. The Capital Area Alliance for the Homeless art program received $2,000 for art supplies and resource materials, and the legal program received $5,000 toward program expenses for their legal and housing departments.

The Cinderella Project received $2,500 toward scholarships and program meals. The Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank was awarded $5,000 for its salvageable food transportation program. The Gardere Community Christian School was awareded $5,817 for a sound system. Habitat for Humanity was awarded $3,000 toward specific home components.

Hospice of Baton Rouge will receive $3,000 toward a sleeper chair/recliner. The Interfaith Federation of Greater Baton Rouge was awarded $4,000 for food and counselors in its Kids Café. Kids Orchestra will receive $4,200 for tuition scholarships. The O’Brien House was awarded $5,000 to help support family strengthening counselors.

The St. James Cub Scout Pack 5 was awarded $1,000 for promotional activities and award banquets. The St. James Food Pantry will receive $5,000 for holiday turkey checks. The We Care program will receive $6,000 to supplement donated funds for food bags, and the Parish Discretionary Fund will receive $2,454 to be disbursed as needs arise.

In diocesan giving, All Souls’ in New Orleans was awarded $4,320 to support its music and homework tutoring program; and, the Chapel of the Transfiguration at Angola was awarded $2,600 for two banquets.

Funding for the Outreach grants comes from your pledges through a regular general budget allocation, designated donations made through the Commemorative Gift Fund as memorials, acknowledgments or tributes, and dedication of one-third of the otherwise undesignated offerings given on Easter Sunday.

September at the CSF:• People of faith have been making

pilgrimages for countless centuries. Members of our community will recount their recent experiences, with a focus of why the particular sites they visited have been important to Christianity. Mtr. Mary Ann Garrett will begin the series on Sunday, September 7 and 21, talking about her trip to the Holy Land.

• The Rev. Canon Shannon Manning will discuss What It Means to Be An Episcopalian on Sunday, September 14.

• Stephen Minister Allen Paterson of St. James will discuss this program of providing Christian caregiving to people in our church families who are in need of hope and healing, on Sunday, September 28. This interdenominational ministry trains lay people in skills that will enable them to offer a healing presence to people in pain due to a variety of events, such as death, divorce, serious illness, and others.

All sessions are Sunday mornings at 10:00 a.m. in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center. Coffee and cookies are available in the atrium. Come on over!

The Columbarium at St. JamesThe St. James Columbarium is located adjacent to the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles exterior wall within the quiet meditation garden (in between Bishops Hall and the Parish Hall). It provides 251 recessed compartments (niches) for the placement of earthly remains after cremation. Two internments are possible for each niche. Each niche is enclosed with a protective granite face plate engraved with the appropriate name and the dates of birth and death.

The columbarium is solely for use by those who worship at St. James as parishioners, or former parishioners, and their immediate families.

The $1,100 fee per niche is a one-time charge. There will be no additional charge for the polished brass inurnment urns with name identification plate, or the memorialized granite face plate(s). A portion of the purchase price will be reserved for future care and maintenance of the columbarium.

A certificate of purchase will be issued granting the exclusive right to use the niche. Rights to a niche may not be sold or otherwise transferred, but may be returned to the parish. Trinity Institute: Save the Date!Creating Common Good: January 22-24, 2015

Economic inequality in the United States is a pervasive, overwhelming issue. Our society is increasingly made up of have and have-nots, and this consistently widening gap represents a condition decried by the prophets, forcefully addressed by Jesus, and singled out by a number of contemporary voices in economics and public policy as a serious but correctable obstacle to human thriving.

Many of us worry that we are complicit in a system that perpetuates economic inequality, and we feel uncomfortable and tense because this complicity goes against our deeply held Christian values about social justice. Many avoid the topic because taking a stand against economic inequality is difficult, and we don’t know what we can do – as individuals and as the Church – to effect change in a broken system.

The Trinity Institute program, provided by the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation in live simulcast, will include the Most Rev. As directed in its enabling resolution C095 approved by the 77th General Convention in 2012, the Task Force to Reimagine the Episcopal Church (TREC) will convene a churchwide meeting on October 2 at 6:30 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is “to receive responses to the proposed recommendations to be brought forward to the 78th General Convention.”

The meeting will be webcast live from Washington National Cathedral and will be viewed at St. James Episcopal Church in the CSF Atrium, on the third floor of the Ministries Center. The meeting is open to the entire church, and there is no fee to attend in person at the National Cathedral, or to watch the live webcast.

The planned format will be short concise presentations followed by substantive question and comment periods. Questions, concerns and comments will be taken from the live audience in addition to email and twitter. Questions can be emailed to reimaginetec@gmail.com or put on Twitter @ReimagineTEC.

TREC plans to draw from the comments, concerns and questions raised during this event to influence and fine-tune proposals currently under consideration during its final meeting immediately following the churchwide gathering on October 3 and 4.

TREC’s final report to General Convention is due by November 30 for the 78th General Convention in Salt Lake City, Utah in July 2015.

There has been significant financial underwriting from Trinity Church Wall Street and generous provision of space and technical support by Washington National Cathedral and the Diocese of Washington critical to making this event possible.

Get Busy Reading: The Bad Girls Book Club Resumes September 22!You have plenty of time to read “The Invention of Wings” by Sue Monk Kidd.

This historical novel is about the relationship between a slave, Handful, and the daughter of slave owners, Sarah Grimké, in antebellum Charleston.

While this is strictly a novel, Sarah Grimké was an actual early abolitionist and feminist whose upbringing in a slaveholding Southern family made her voice particularly controversial. Handful’s mamma, who tells her life story with needle and thread, is based on quilter Harriet Powers, an African American born into slavery in 1837.

Baton Rouge Enneagram Seminar is September 27-28Sandra Smith, M.Div. who led the highly-acclaimed Enneagram workshop for the Center for Spiritual Formation here last fall, will be presenting a workshop in the Baton Rouge area this September, hosted by Education for Living Seminars.

This is an introductory workshop and it is not necessary to have any previous experience with the Enneagram, or know your type. You will learn about the Enneagram; attentional patterns and world views of the nine types; the gifts and challenges of each personality type; and, strategies for loosening automatic patterns of behavior.

Graduates of EfM - Join Us!If you have graduated from the four year program of Education for Ministry offered by The University School of the South at Sewanee, you are invited to join us on the third Thursday of the month from noon until 1:30 p.m. as we gather at various locations through the year for a time of spiritual feeding.

The four year program is rich with spiritual and intellectual food. Periodic gathering of graduates for a little “renewal and refreshments” can be rewarding.

Because this gathering is during the lunch hour, you are invited to bring a bag lunch. You do not have to attend every meeting. Come when you can. All we ask is that you respond to the monthly email meeting reminder, so the host(ess) and group do know whether to expect you!

The usual format is that one of the group volunteers to present a brief lesson followed by a hearty group discussion. Any format and topic will do — whatever is on your heart at the time.

The most important thing is that we get to use our theological reflection skills,

our lifetime experiences, our knowledge of the Bible and tradition to hold a rich discussion about the chosen subject. This is a tradition we have followed for four

years in EfM. We don’t want it to vanish.

The Parlor Flowers GuildManette Sammons is keeping open her invitation now to any who might be interested in joining the Parlor Flowers Guild but missed connecting with her at the Ministries Fair.

If you enjoy flower arranging, this could be a ministry you would enjoy. Depending on how many join this group, you will be asked to create a fresh arrangement of flowers for the Parish Hall Parlor on a schedule of about once every six to 10 weeks. Fellow members have been good to swap around if there are date conflicts.

A Congregational Health & Wellness Ministry — what’s it all about?St. James has just launched a Congregational Health & Wellness Ministry and many wonder “What’s it all about?” The National Episcopal Health Ministries has a vision that every Episcopal congregation become a vibrant, caring place for health and wholeness. It is their mission to promote health ministry in our churches assisting its members to reclaim the Gospel imperative of health and wholeness.

Health problems exist among our membership. We can experience better health after those risks have been identified and addressed. The first step in determining what type of educational offerings, health fairs, etc., can be of value to our members, and the Baton Rouge Deanery as whole, is to survey the membership of St. James and the surrounding Episcopal churches.

Launched in the August 18 issue of the eMessenger, you can visit and participate in the online health questionnaire that will be an integral part of establishing a congregational wellness ministry.

This survey is 100% anonymous. The survey does not ask for your name nor is your email going to be revealed as a tie to a particular survey that is received. Please be completely honest about your health concerns and the issues that relate to your health. This information will be the key to how the ministry can create the best programs possible to help our parish and area Episcopalians.

Nationwide, Episcopal parishes, with a median age of 57, experience the reality of health issues and care giving that often accompany the aging process and impact both individuals and their younger family members.
