Thinking About Faith

Ed Henderson, retired professor and Chair of the Dept. of Philosophy and Religious Studies at LSU, will present portions of the “faith conversation” he held with his granddaughter when she was in treatment at St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis in 2010 and 2011. The faith conversation is part of a forthcoming book, Suffering Into Faith, which will be published later this year by Wipf and Stock. The book incorporates the faith exchange along with segments of his granddaughter Maggie’s journal, which she kept throughout her year of treatment. Ed continues these sessions, started earler in the year, on Sunday, April 6, and Sunday, May 4 at 10:00 a.m. in the CSF Atrium on the third floor of the Ministries Center.

What is Meditative Yoga?

Margaret Culbertson, who leads the Meditative Yoga sessions held on the second and fourth Mondays from 11:00-12:30 p.m. in the CSF Atrium, will present a background and introduction to this ancient practice. In our western culture, people think of yoga primarily as a physical practice, as exercise. While it does provide many wonderful physical benefits, including increased flexibility and stress reduction, yoga actually is for the mind. The ancient yogis used pranayama (breathing) and asanas (poses) as a means of quieting their minds in preparation for meditation. The

purpose of yoga is to know God, so come and learn some of the philosophy of yoga and how to be still and know God.

ECW Chapter MeetingsThe St. Joan of Arc Chapter of the Episcopal Church Women will meet at noon on Wednesday, April 2, 2013 at the home of Bunny Hines. Judy Foil will present the lesson on St. Joan of Arc. R.s.v.p. to Nina Broyles Fleshman at [email protected] or 225-769-9150.

Page 7 The Messenger April 2014

As Our Lenten Journey continues, please consider …Compline: Sundays at 7:00 p.m.

May the Lord Almighty grant us a peaceful night and a perfect end.

From the ancient monastic practice of ending the day

in prayer and praise of God, this serene service features a small group of singers leading prayers and chants that may be joined as you desire.

All are welcome to come experience one of the softly beautiful Anglican gems of worship. Come clothed in comfort, make yourself comfortable, and use the beautiful sounds and stillness to deepen your journey through Lent.

Compline will be sung on Sunday, April 6 and Sunday, April 11 at 7:00 p.m.

Easter Egg HuntLindsay Lamont Turner is helping out the Easter bunny, collecting treat-filled plastic Easter eggs for this year’s Egg Hunt on Easter Sunday, April 20 at about 10:15 a.m. (after the

nine o’clock service with flowering of the cross).

If you think you might have a child or grandchild participate, please think about donating to the bunny’s basket — the more eggs we have, the more for your little bunny to hunt!

Here are the details:

Eggs: Any color plastic eggs

Stuffing: small trinkets (stickers, bouncy balls, erasers, etc.), or individually wrapped candy

A collection box is in the Parish Hall parlor, and will be there through Palm Sunday, April 13.

If you have any questions, would like to help stuff eggs, or before or at the hunt, please contact Lindsay Turner at 225-964-5652 or [email protected].

Altar of Repose follows Maundy Thursday ServiceThe St. James Center for Spiritual Formation will again prepare the Altar of Repose in the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles for opening after the Maundy Thursday Service, at approximately 8:00 p.m. The garden setting will remain open until the first service on Good Friday, at 7:30 a.m., when the reserve sacrament, which has been held in respose in the Chapel, is processed into the church.

You are invited to come and sit in the garden, which is symbolical of waiting and praying with Christ in the Garden of Gethsemane. You may sign up for a time on the sign-up sheet on-line at www.tinyurl.com/AltarOfRepose, or in the foyers of the Parish Hall and the Ministries Center, or you may just appear whenever you feel called to do so during that evening. There may be many with you, or you may be alone. Security officers will be on duty throughout the night and until the reserved sacrament is processed to the church on Good Friday morning. As Christ asked of his disciples, “Can you not sit with me an hour?”

One may ask, “What exactly are Maundy Thursday and The Altar of Repose?”

The term Maundy comes from the Latin mandatum, meaning commandment. “I give you a new commandment, that you love one another. Just as I have loved you, you also should love one another. By this everyone will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another,” Jesus said to his disciples after washing their feet (John 13:34).

This service contains several parts. The washing of feet may be the special liturgy of the evening. This is also the time of the solemn commemoration of the institution of the Lord’s Supper. In our practice, the altar is stripped before the final blessing. In the stripping of the altar, all appointments (the candlesticks, missal stand, books, etc.) are removed from the sanctuary, the linen on the altar is removed, and the altar left bare.

The sanctuary lamp is extinguished, and the reserved sacrament is processed to the altar of the Chapel of the Twelve Apostles, much as Jesus and his disciples departed for the Garden of Gethsemane on the night he was betrayed.

Volunteer to create the garden

Perhaps your Lenten journey and entrance to the Paschal Triduum lead you to assist in creation of the garden atmosphere in the Chapel. Using the form on the back cover, you may make a donation for plants used in the garden, which are afterward transplated to the grounds around St. James, as a memorial or thank offering. Or, you may be called to assist in the practical matters — helping clear space, placing plants, creating a beautiful environment. Please contact Nancy Jo Poirrier at [email protected], who would be delighted to receive additional assistance in this endeavor, a gift to one’s individual appreciation of the period, as well as all who visit.

The

We proclaim Christ crucified and risen, and invite you to join with us in ministry together in his name.

Increased costs to meet new postal regulations and fees have forced us to terminate automatic mailing of The MESSENGER to parish households. Readers are encouraged to use the online version to enjoy color photographs and graphics, easy links to contact information, maps, additional information and reference materials, and more. If you know of someone who cannot receive the electronic version, nor is able to pick up a paper copy available in the narthex, foyers and vestibules, please share their name with us so other arrangements can be made — or better yet: pick one up and bring it to them on a visit, yourself!
