Message from the Administrator
Sunday May 12th is Mother’s Day and it’s normally a time when we see a large number of families in to celebrate this special day with loved ones. We’ll be having a celebration on the day before, and you’ll find details within the newsletter if you’re planning on attending. And let’s hope that spring will have finally arrived by then! Here are some quotes on Mothers: "The love of a mother is the veil of a softer light between the heart and the heavenly Father.” ― Samuel Taylor Coleridge
“Mama was my greatest teacher, a teacher of compassion, love and fearlessness. If love is sweet as a flower, then my mother is that sweet flower of love." ―Stevie Wonder
"There is nothing in the world of art like the songs mother used to sing." ― Billy Sunday
A mother understands what a child does not say. ―Jewish proverb At time of writing this newsletter, our 8th annual Easter Egg Hunt will not have occurred; however, I would like to thank Darryl Drain of Drain Poultry for once again helping us with the purchase of our chocolate Easter eggs, as we will put out close to 27,000 again. As well, our Residents’ Council has helped with the purchase of the 4 bicycles that were given out to our prize winners in each age category. This is a wonderful intergenerational program that brings the youth of our community into contact with our elders and has benefits on many levels. I would like to offer a big thank you to everyone who helped out to make this fun event a success.
Our Volunteer Appreciation was held on April 11th last month and we had a wonderful time with some amazing and very giving people. Congratulations to Shirley Kehoe for winning the Ontario Long-Term Care Association Circle of Excellence Award and to Jonnie Lovell who won the Helen McCartney Memorial Award. Thank you each and every volunteer for the time and effort that you give to our residents. As Linda Huddleston displayed so aptly, our home would look very different without you. Dandelion Folklore
"He loves me, he loves me-not."
Folklore has an interesting spin on determining whether
or not you are loved. Instead of picking the petals off a
daisy, try blowing the seeds off a dandelion globe. It's
said that if you can blow all the seeds off with one
blow, then you are loved with a passionate love. If
some seeds remain, then your lover has reservations
about the relationship. Source: "Unusual Vegetables, Something
New for this Year's Garden," Rodale Press Emmaus, PA.
Telling Time with a Dandelion, aka "Clock
Flower" or "Tell-Time"
Legend has it that the number of breaths it takes to blow off all the seeds of a dandelion globe that
has gone to seed, is the hour number. Time, anyone? Source: Online Etymology Dictionary & Com-
mon Dandelion - The Lion's Tooth If blowing seeds is not your idea of telling time, consider this:
"The dandelion is called the rustic oracle; its flowers always open about 5 A.M. and shut at 8 P.M.,
serving the shepherd for a clock." Source: Folkard (448. 309), from "The Child and Childhood in Folk-Thought," by
Alexander F. Chamberlain
Dandelion Barometers (it's true!)
"The dandelion is an excellent barometer, one of the commonest and most reliable. It is when
the blooms have seeded and are in the fluffy, feathery condition that its weather prophet facili-
ties come to the fore. In fine weather the ball extends to the full, but when rain approaches, it
shuts like an umbrella. If the weather is inclined to be showery it keeps shut all the time, only
opening when the danger from the wet is past." Source: "Camping For Boys," by H.W. Gibson
