Dartington Village Hall
The village hall will be closed until 6th December for installation of a new heating system. This has been made possible thanks to the generosity of County Councillor Trevor Pennington and Ward Councillor Michael Hicks. We have also been lucky to receive an ‘Awards For All’ grant from the National Lottery.
This is just the beginning of an extensive renovation project. We are pursuing funding for disabled toilets and access, rewiring and a new roof with insulation and solar panels.
Other plans include new curtains ,sanded woodwork and LOADS OF FUN EVENTS...Starting with January 8th 2011, we are having a Hall warming party. There will be a bar, entertainment and good food. We would like to hold a grand raffle to be drawn on the night.
We want to make the hall a warm and welcoming venue for a variety of social activities in the village.I’ve heard stories of past events:fancy dress parties, cinema nights and comedy shows, and it would be great if we could recreate those ‘good old days’ with some new ideas too.
Offers of raffle prizes or donations towards the refurbishment will be gratefully received as would any help with jobs in hand.

Dear Reader,
My name is Joyce Wynne. I am Church Warden at St. Marys Church, Dartington. I would like to reassure you that, although we do not have a resident Vicar, the life of the Church continues. The Revd, Julian Ould and the Revd, Jane Lankaster will continue to officiate at Baptisms, Weddings and Funerals. A weekly Newsletter can be found in the Church giving details of Services at Dartington and Brooking.
Over the Christmas period there will be a Carol Service on the 16th December at 6.30pm, followed by mince pies and mulled wine. On Christmas Eve there will be a Christingle Service at 3pm and on Christmas Day there will be a Family Eucharist at 11.15am. Unfortunately, we are unable to hold Midnight Mass this year. If you know of anyone who is housebound and might like a visit or Home Communion, please telephone me at 865048.
May I take this opportunity of wishing you a very happy and peaceful Christmas. Joyce.
The new presentation of The Messenger has been well received and many favourable comments made.
Pam Gorman’s article (Around Dartington) was also praised. I am also pleased to report that our application to South Hams District Council Sustainable Community Locality Fund was granted and we received £500 toward the cost of production and distribution of The Messenger. Many thanks to Councillor Hicks for all his help. Even a small publication like The Messenger is quite expensive to produce. So thank you very much to everyone involved.
The DPD process is still continuing along its rocky path. The introduction of alternative sites just prior to the Inspector’s arrival to the South Hams was not well received by parishioners.
Councillor Whitaker and I attended the enquiry at Follaton House on the 5th November. It was pointed out at the meeting the Inspector’s function was to examine the soundness of the DPD document presented by the Planners. If the document was sound then the question of alternative sites was not an option. If however the DPD document was found to be unsound then alternative sites may be considered.
We will probably not know the results until the New Year, possibly February 2011.

The Dartington Hall Trust is delighted to announce a partnership with Midas Homes to take forward the vision for the Abundant Life project, a £25m development which, if approved for planning by South Hams District Council, would become a flagship community for older people based at the Foxhole site on the Dartington Hall estate.
The Abundant Life project is a response to a clear social need within the local community. Within a few years more than 24% of Devon’s population will be over the age of 65, and already there are more people over the age of 65 than under 16. In a society that has increasingly viewed older people as a drain on resources, this demographic change challenges us to think and act differently – creating real opportunities for older people to have a fulfilling life and also to make a valuable contribution to their communities. And it will not be an isolated community – it will include many facilities and opportunities for local people, as well as providing refurbished space for small businesses.
The Abundant Life project would allow for Foxhole, the former site of the Dartington School, to be regenerated and will bring an important listed building back into more integrated use.
Celia Atherton, Director of Social Justice at Dartington and leader for this project, said: “We are delighted to be working with Midas Homes on realising the Abundant Life community at Dartington. We have a shared vision of achieving this new model for community living for older people, with the intention of influencing a cultural shift in the way we think and engage with older age.
“In keeping with our founders, the Elmhirsts’, philosophy that ‘an abundant life is a happy life’, our plan is to develop a community where creativity, personal development and the opportunity to be contributing members of society runs alongside support for life and is affordable for all. The project is a long one and securing a partner that has the same vision as us is just one encouraging milestone in what will be a lengthy process.”Bill Cawse, Managing Director of Midas Homes, commented: “We are excited to be working with Dartington on this innovative project. Like Dartington, we are committed to working with the communities in which we operate and together we will embark on significant levels of community consultation over the coming months.”
Celia Atherton added: “Being able to deliver this vision of a better older age needs the very best of specialist design. We have appointed PRP Architects, the leading designers of living spaces for older people in the UK, to work with us to deliver the scheme in line with our commitment to sustainability (in build and operations) and sympathy with the existing unique buildings and landscape to create an atmosphere that welcomes visitors and residents alike - all enabling residents to maintain and enhance their independence and community spirit.”
From the start of this project, over two years ago, community engagement has been central – and has contributed many excellent ideas and skills. As the project continues to progress, more opportunities will be provided to see plans and to contribute to the design of the private and public spaces. A series of design workshops with potential residents and the local community will take place over the next few months, helping to shape the apartments, community facilities and business spaces on offer so that the Abundant Life project makes a real and positive contribution to the well-being of the local community.

New model for older age living on the Dartington estate takes a step forward

The Dartington Hall Trust is embarking on a comprehensive review of the use of the 750 acres of farmland on its core estate, in order to better align future usage with its innovative charitable purposes.
Currently almost 750-acres of the estate’s heartland is used for dairy farming under a longstanding tenancy agreement that ends in autumn 2014 with the farmer’s retirement. After this date, the Trust plans to use the land in new ways that will contribute to Dartington’s core purpose as a place of experiment, education and enterprise in the arts, social justice and sustainability.
John Channon, Conservation and Woodlands Manager at Dartington, is leading the review. He explained, “The purpose of the Land Use Review is to provide a new vision and strategy for the use of the land on the Dartington Hall estate. Once complete, the strategy will provide a plan to help ensure a seamless link between the current agricultural practices on the Estate and the proposed land use for the future, which includes the woodland and conservation areas.
“The change will provide opportunities to use Dartington’s land to explore possible solutions to today’s pressing problems, such as the impact of projected shifts in climate, population and the availability of fuel.”
The review applies to land and buildings within the area banded by the river Dart from Staverton Bridge down to the weir at Totnes and then alongside the A385 and the A384.

Dartington Community Website has been set up as a result of the feedback received from local residents via a survey conducted by the Community Action Plan group. The group discovered that there were lots of exciting things going on in the village, but not many people were aware of these things. The website is here to publicise local events and bring people together who may want to get involved with or start their own groups or clubs.
Some parts of the website are still under construction, but do take some time to have a look at the work in progress. We would love to hear from anyone who has anything to add – its success depends on local people contributing their ideas and knowledge to enable it to be up to date and relevant.

Autumn has begun to turn to winter with changeable weather and shortening days. Whatever the weather, our children continue to enjoy being outdoors and as well as using our school grounds we have had a range of residential trips, visits and walks in our surrounding area. Inspiration from active learning and experiences has a positive impact on learning and one of our teams in school is currently researching the links between outside learning and writing.
For much of our approaches to children’s learning we draw on the model of early years education. We particularly like the recognition that the child is a learner across the whole day, and not just in chunks of lessons within a timetable. Being with your peers at play, eating together at mealtimes, arriving and walking home, all provide opportunities for spiritual, social and emotional learning which underpin our life skills and personal development.In line with our school values, as shared in our last article, we are keen to be explicit about developing these skills within our school community and much of our work this term is focused on empathy and compassion.
Our older pupils, those in Years Five and Six, have begun working towards achieving a new Citizenship award which they have helped us create. Beginning with their Bronze, they are showing a huge amount of empathy and compassion, organising activities for younger children, being reading buddies, creating items to share in our Acts of Worship, helping others at lunch time and planning inclusion events with children at Bidwell Brook.
We are sharing together when we see empathy and compassion working really well and are calling these our ‘wow’ moments. When things go wrong, or we have things that are difficult to deal with, we are recognising these as ‘Ow’ moments. Seeing our young citizens setting such excellent examples to other pupils has created lots of ‘Wow’ moments in school already!
Currently in school we have been collecting for our Christmas Operation Shoebox Appeal, filling shoeboxes with gifts for Christmas to be given to children who have so little. For Children In Need our School Council plan events to help us have fun together, but also to be aware of the real focus for the day. As we draw nearer to Christmas our Forest Families are planning gifts they would like to give to the world based on their Christian values. Our children have much to reflect on and be grateful for.
As part of the Dartington Community Forum Group the school was very interested in responses to the locality questionnaire that was undertaken recently. From this it has emerged that there is interest in learning courses that might be run in the school for the community to access. We would love to be able to offer these and are looking to match courses and times to local need. At the moment we are planning to offer an ICT course in the spring term that might include an introduction to basic skills, such as using the Internet, emails, internet security, child safety online, copying and pasting etc. If you are interested in finding out more about this or have any suggestions or questions, please do let us know via the school office ([email protected] or 01803 862357)
Around us there have been darkening clouds around spending reviews and the far reaching effect that financial restraint is going to have on us all. There is no doubt that cuts are already evident across a wide range of services and there is a great deal of uncertainty about what the future holds. It is difficult to make decisions without information, but certainly as far as schools are concerned, we are already looking towards our budget for the coming year and considering how we might maintain our high standards of rich and varied provision in a creative and innovative way.
Whatever the future may hold for all of us, everyone at Dartington would like to wish you all a warm and festive Christmas.
