Kyrene de los Cerritos – Leadership Academy
August 7, 2020
Message from the Principal
Welcome back to the 2020-2021 school year. With one more week to go we are working hard to put
the finishing touches on the start to a wonderful school year. This year may not start off the way we
would have planned but our teachers and staff are excited to work with our students and families
again. As we finalize the last details please continue to look for communications in email, on our
website and Facebook page to receive the most up to date information.
The beginning of a school year is always a time of renewal and provides us with a new beginning. New
school supplies, happy smiling faces in our classrooms and the promise of potential and growth are
what invigorate us and remind us of our important work as educators. The process of education might
be different this year, but our passion and motivation has not changed. We can’t wait to engage with
our students to build positive relationships and inspire learning no matter where it happens this year.
"I love this quote! I think it is perfect for
the start of a new school year. Welcome
back Roadrunners."
Mrs. Gingell

Meet the Teacher Night
Join us online for Meet the Teacher on Thursday, August 13! Aside from being online, this event
might function a little differently than Meet the Teacher events you've attended in the past. This
virtual event is designed to give you an opportunity to meet your child's teacher, learn important back
to school information, school procedures and PTO information.
Teachers will be available for 20 minutes to meet your children via a Zoom meeting. We ask that you
attend the session designated by your student's last name. This will ensure that the virtual meeting is a
smaller environment for maximum opportunities for teachers and families to connect.
On Thursday, August 13 you will receive an email in the afternoon from your child's teacher. This
welcome email will include a link to our Virtual Meet the Teacher Website. You may visit the virtual
site at any time, but the zoom links for the live meetings with the teacher will not be available until
the assigned time.
We encourage families to spend some time on the Meet the Teacher website which will include
A welcome message from Administration
Grade level welcome videos, newsletters, and handouts
School procedures and handout
Health office information and Covid Safety
PTO welcome and handouts
Important school and district links
Student password Setup/Reset
As we start the new school year, it will be necessary for all students to set up a new password and
three security questions for their Kyrene network account. Follow the instructions that are attached as
soon as possible so that your children are ready for the school year. IMPORTANT: When you are
initially prompted to enter a password, please note that your temporary password has been set as
Student1. If you need assistance, contact the student help desk via this website.
Let's Celebrate! Cerritos Exterior Improvement Projects
This summer, Cerritos had some amazing projects completed to spruce up our courtyard and
sidewalks. We now have a much needed playground for our preschoolers. The courtyard is full of
brand new trees, large boulders that are decorative and functional as seating areas, new grass, and
lovely aesthetic touches. In the front of the building we have a new sidewalk leading to the preschool
gate, a new shade ramada and bench, and beautiful brick pavers. Thank you Kyrene for your work and
support on this huge project.
Health Services is here to help!
If your child has a health condition, please notify the Health Office at your child's school. In some
cases, the Health Services Team may ask parents to complete a School Health Care Plan to ensure
your child's safety at school. Hearing and vision screenings are given to selected groups of students
per Arizona mandate under the guidelines of the Arizona Department of Health Hearing
Conservation Program and the Arizona Department of Education.

7 Habits of Online Learning
At Cerritos, students learn and practice the 7 Habits of Highly Effective Kids. These 7 habits online
learning tips below will help families prepare for a successful school year.
Be Proactive®: Set up your child’s work environment
Pick a quiet location, comfortable seating, and good lighting
Consider ergonomics and pick a space that is free of distraction
Make a list of logins and passwords the teacher gives you and post on a wall in the workspace
Familiarize your child with the mute/unmute button
Enable the bookmark bar in chrome and add sites that your child will have to access regularly
Put First Things First®: Prioritize school and learning
Set timers throughout the day
Make a daily schedule
Put phones and other electronics out of the school workspace.
Begin with the End in Mind®: Have tools ready to support virtual learning
Before virtual learning begins check technology requirements and that the camera and
microphone are working properly
Practice logging into the online classroom
Determine if your child needs any other technology tools such as a mouse, monitor, or
headphones to support their learning
Maintain a planner to keep track of school activities and homework
Set daily and weekly goals
Think Win-Win®: Create a troubleshooting plan
Plan for obstacles and develop realistic solutions
Use school resources and read through program guides and watch tutorials
Seek help when needed
Be flexible and be willing to adjust your schedules
Seek First to Understand and then be Understood®: Master communication skills
The goal of online communications is the same as the goal in face-to-face communications: to
bond; to share information; to be heard, and to be understood.
Ask clarifying questions
Synergize®: Be an active leader during online learning
Be an active participant in class
Message with teacher
Reach out to classmates
Sharpen the Saw®: Take time away from the screen
Take brain breaks during the day
After a long day of online learning get outdoors, take a walk, rest eyes, and explore hobbies.
Avoid moving right into more screen time on devices
