Volume IV ISSUE #3 Spring 2012 Message from the Principal: Greetings! I hope you each had a wonderful Spring Break. It was great to spend time with friends and family and reenergize for the remainder of the school year. It is difficult to believe that we are so close to summer break - it doesn’t seem like that long ago that we were beginning the school year and our continued work to reach proficiency for all students. This has already been a fantastic year for Frederick Law Olmsted Academy North (FLOAN). Our teachers and students have worked very hard. Attitudes are at an all-time high. We have had more students than ever accepted to their high school of choice for next year. Our progress was noted on the state's school-wide Leadership Assessment Audit that retained school leadership and our SBDM Council. The results that came in from our Comprehensive School surveys administered for the district indicate a remarkable transformation in our four years as an all-boys school. Results indicate that there is a restored faith in the work of our school by staff, parents, and students. Furthermore, the results show that our school has made significant progress in areas of safety, student expectations, staff attitudes, and overall culture. With that said, much work remains. We must continue to improve the academic performance of our students through heightened rigor within the classroom. We must ensure that all students are college/career ready. Finally, we must make sure that we continue to develop staff to educate students for the 21st century by developing and nurturing the professional culture of our school. In the days ahead, I encourage you to read with your child and have them respond and tell you what the article or reading passage is about. Practice with them on basic math questions. Encourage them to write more and do so in complete sentences. Talk with them about school and ask them what they are learning or doing. Check student agendas as teachers are to give weekly progress reports to them to share with you. These things will help our work. In closing, I am confident that the best days for FLOAN lie ahead. It is my pleasure to serve as your principal. I will give my all to ensure our school's wonderful potential becomes a reality. Bill Perkins Principal

Message from the Principal:

Greetings!

ORGANIZING FOR LIFE IN 6TH GRADE

During the week of March 12th, the sixth-grade students were working on a CARE unit on home and school organization. So many of our boys are unaware of how their lack of organization keeps them from successfully pursuing their goals. During the week, the classes discussed how to clean and organize their rooms, closets, and study areas at home. The boys also had conversations and shared how to keep their desks, binders, and lockers neat and organized. Short video clips gave them tips on time management as it relates to getting and staying organized. Please support us in our efforts by modeling good organizational skills at home and by following up with your child on what they are doing to stay organized at both home and school. These are life skills that will enable your son to be more successful in school and in the future work force. THE COUNSELORS’ COVE

Coming Soon: State-wide Testing in May

It’s that time of year when we start preparing to take the state-wide test. Several years ago, it was CATS, then it became the KCCT, and now we have a new test. Beginning this school year, the state of Kentucky will begin administering our new state accountability test. The new test is the Kentucky Performance Rating for Educational Progress, also known as K-PREP. Senate Bill 1 established a consecutive five-day testing window during the last 14 instructional days of each school district's calendar.

FLOAN (along with all other middle schools in JCPS) will take the K-PREP May 14th-18th. Make-up dates for students who missed testing days will be May 21st, 23rd, 24th, and 25th (school is not in session May 22nd). It is very important that every student is present and ready to test every day of the testing session. Here are some tips for a successful week of testing:

Be on-time and present at school every day of the testing

session. Get a good night’s sleep each night. Eat a good breakfast. Come to school with a positive attitude and with a mind to

work! Leave no blanks! Answer every question to the best of your

ability. If you have any questions about your child taking the K-PREP May 14th-

18th, please contact Ms. Hardin, our Building Assessment Coordinator (BAC), at 485-8331, or by email at [email protected].

8TH GRADE NEWS

Many of the 8th grade students have received their acceptance letters to high school. At this time, I am pleased to announce that we have had students accepted at Butler, Central, Doss, Eastern, Fairdale, Fern Creek, Iroquois, Jeffersontown, Male, Manual, Moore, Pleasure Ridge Park, Seneca, Shawnee, Southern, Valley, Wagner, Western, and St. Xavier. We are so incredibly proud of our students. Thank you parents for helping your child complete the application and packets in a timely manner.

Some students did not get accepted into their first or second choice schools. If this is true for your student, you may request a student transfer. The Student Transfer forms will be delivered to schools on May 7th. You or your son can pick up the application at FLOAN, complete it, have the form notarized, and drop the completed notarized form to Room 106 at the LAM building on Bishops Lane.

You may also complete the form online: 1) Go to JCPS webpage, www.jefferson.k12.ky.us. 2) Then choose PARENTS tab. 3) Look for title, Applying to a School, and choose Student

Transfer. 4) Click on the prompt for parents, indicate that you wish to apply, but do

not use Parent Portal Username. After May 7th, the revised application will appear and you can complete it online. Either choice is fine. If you need help or assistance, please feel free to call Mrs. Lockard at 485-8331.

The 8th grade students read the book, The Hunger Games, and this past

week attended the movie. The students’ behavior was exemplary and the movie was enjoyed by all. Viewing the movie is an excellent way for our students to compare the book and the movie, thus practicing the tested skill of comparing and contrasting. Our students demonstrated their comprehension skills with exceptional written responses.

On March 30th, we celebrated and recognized 8th grade student’s academic achievements. Seven students earned A Honor Roll and twenty-four earned A/B Honor Roll. Every student who received a Proficient or Distinguished on a content area assessment for the year received a dress down pass – some receiving over five a piece. Way to go, boys!

Also, on March 30th the 9th grade counselors from Doss and Iroquois made a visit to FLOAN to help incoming freshmen create their schedules and to review school expectations.

All 8th grade students took the 21st Century Test during the last two weeks. KPREP testing will be given during the week of May 14-18th, with make-up testing the following week. Please make sure that your child is in attendance during the week of KPREP testing. Students have also completed their ILP (Individual Learning Plan), which is a tool that helps prepare students for high school, provides information on college, careers, and goal-setting.

Mayor Greg Fischer has declared a Make a Difference Day for the week of April 16th. Our students will be writing letters to military personnel and local service providers helping the tornado victims in West Liberty, Ky. More information on this project will follow after Spring Break.

During Spring Break, enjoy your time with your son, enjoy his conversation, and let them talk. You are the most influential person in your child’s life and they love spending time with you. REINFORCING / REWARDING STUDENTS

Why should I reinforce a child for something he should be doing anyway?

If the student is not doing what should be done, how can you going to get

the student started? Obviously, if the individual is already performing successfully and is finding natural satisfactions, no further rewards are necessary. If not, rewards may be helpful. It seems strange that adults sometimes expect a student to work under conditions that the adult would not tolerate. For many students, doing well now for payment in the distant future (e.g. praise from parents on a report card, getting into college, mastering multiplication, etc.) is too far away to be motivating. Developing an ability to delay gratification takes maturity and a positive learning history.

I shouldn’t have to bribe the student to get him to do what

should be done!

a) Webster’s Dictionary defines “bribe” as accepting remuneration (a reward or payment) for doing something illegal.

b) Would you continue teaching or working at your job if you stopped getting your pay? What if you were only paid every three years?

c) Do you appreciate receiving positive comments, recognition, a “thank-you,” etc.?

d) Rewards should be viewed as temporary. As the student starts obtaining natural self-satisfaction, other rewards can be gradually removed as they become unnecessary.

“Won’t the other students in the class become upset and behave

negatively if some students are receiving special reinforcers?” (This is the most common concern expressed by teachers at all grade levels.) Because each group is different, there is no single answer or solution to

this question. More often than not, once a special reinforcement program has been designed for a single individual, the whole group improves.

Based Decision Making Council is composed of the following members: Bill Perkins (Principal/Chairperson), Shonda Gilbert (Teacher), Alexandra Greenspan (Teacher), Matthew Howell (Teacher), Dawn Robinson (Parent), and Connie Simmons (Parent).

In the past 3 months the Council has been working hard to address recommendations by our KDE Leadership Assessment Audit that includes but is not limited to:

- Rewriting FLOAN’s School Policies to ensure they are in line with the KDE Leadership Assessment Audit recommendations.

- Approving a 2012-2013 Schedule Structure and Budget that will provide more exploratory related arts options for students (as per recommendations) and provide students with appropriate interventions and enrichment within federal, state, and district budget/curriculum guidelines.

- Reviewing the progress of and working with SBDM Committees to further implement KDE Leadership Assessment Audit Recommendations.

- Reviewing and discussing Student Achievement Scores/Benchmarks in an effort to implement the best teaching strategies for improving student achievement and scores.

As we have in the past, the SBDM Council has an open-door policy for anyone who wants to attend and speak at Council meetings. Please see the following link for information on meeting dates and times, previous meeting minutes, and other important SBDM Council information: http://www.jefferson.k12.ky.us/Schools/Middle/OlmstedNorth/SBDM.html

ATHLETICS

FLOAN SOCCER

Coming off a 2nd place finish in the district finals last season, the FLOAN soccer team has started strong again this year. With 13 new players, the team is still adjusting to having players in new positions and filling new roles. At this point in the season, we are focusing on learning to play better as a unified team. In addition to the challenges associated with having so many new players, the team is also adjusting to playing in a more competitive division in the district.

The biggest difference we have seen this year is the greatly-increased level of support from the school community. We have had numerous FLOAN staff members step up and help the team by providing equipment and meals for the players. In addition to increased monetary support, we have also noticed a huge increase in support at our games. The number of students and staff who come out to cheer on the team has grown exponentially since last season. This boost in support has been invaluable to the soccer team and they really appreciate the support. In addition to students and staff, we have also had several alumni players attend games. It has been really beneficial for the team to see how well these former players are doing, as six players from last year’s team made high school varsity teams this year.

The soccer team would like to thank everyone for their continued support. BASEBALL

The 2012 FLOAN baseball team is off to a good start. We’ve outscored our opponents 41-7 in our first 4 games, beating Lassiter, Myers, Carrithers and Newburg. Our coaching staff consists of coach Eric Mora and assistant coaches Brandon Dietz and Michael Voelker.

The FLOAN baseball team has also received significant support from the parents of 7th grader Drue Yates. Mr. Yates is an assistant coach and also our resident mechanical expert. He has donated crucial equipment, he’s at every practice and he is there to supervise players when assistant coaches cannot attend practice. Mr. Yates is a proud parent and without his help, our program would be much more difficult to run. We need more just like him! We are also thankful to other parents who have come out to support our team.

Last week was a long and tough week for us. We played two very late games during the week, finishing up at 11pm on Tuesday and Thursday. Unfortunately, we are sometimes at the mercy of our league when it comes to start times, but our boys have shown amazing resiliency and mental toughness

Page 7: Message from the Principalschools.jefferson.kyschools.us/Middle/OlmstedNorth/... · Leadership Assessment Audit that retained school leadership and our SBDM Council. The results that

not only on the ballfield, but the next day at school. Our team GPA (3.3) has never been higher, and our players are showing tremendous academic potential as well. I am very proud to say that as head coach of the baseball program for the 4th year in a row, I have never had the pleasure of coaching a better group of players. This group is very special. They work very hard, they respect their coaches, their teachers and most importantly, each other. This is the true quality of a championship baseball club.

Our 8th grade leaders have done a tremendous job of modeling good work habits and sportsmanship, particularly Michael Quiles. Michael was one of only two sixth-graders that played baseball for FLOAN in the 2009-10 season. He is tremendously talented but struggled with leadership until now. He has taken direction over the years and really grew into his role as a leader. Another key player is 8th grader Byron Domeck, who is the other player who has been part of the program since the 2009-10 season. 8th graders Jose Fuentes, Harol Matos, David Boston, Jared Forman, Lanelle Walker and Sean Greer are solid performers as well. 7th Grader Drue Yates is a model student and teammate who takes care of business on the field but more importantly in the classroom, with a 4.0 GPA. Sean Greer, David Boston and Michael Quiles are also solid academic staples at FLOAN, carrying high GPA’s and setting behavior standards for their peers. We are proud to say that we have produced several players to go on to play at the high school level in the last 4 years. Several players are key members of their teams at Iroquois, Doss, Fairdale, and Butler. This is what it is all about!

Finally, if anyone is looking to support our program please talk to Coach Mora or one of the assistant coaches. We are always looking for fans, and we are selling FLOAN gear to raise money for equipment. Baseballs are expensive and they get wear out quickly. With new bat regulations also, we only have one truly “legal” bat. We would just like to see more parent and fan support, as we are consistently lower in attendance with fan support at every game than our opponent. We have a chance at a championship this season and we need everyone’s help.

Our next game is a big one. We play Noe at 6pm at Beechmont on Monday April 2nd. We are also competing in the first Middle School State Baseball Tournament. We will play on May 12 in Jeffersonville vs. Murray. Baseball Schedules are online at the JCPS league website at www.leaguelineup.com/jcms and they are also in the office. Official FLOAN Baseball hats are for sale for $20, T-Shirts are $15, and Hoodies are $30. Gear is limited, so get is now! All proceeds go to FLOAN baseball for practice field maintenance fees and team equipment. Let’s take fan support to the next level and win that 1st FLOAN Athletic Championship in 2012! Go Colts!

Also the cafeteria would like to note that starting May 1, we will no longer be allowing breakfast and lunch charging so that we may collect on all uncollected charges before the end of the school year. THE BAND NEWS STATION

Every year in the state of Kentucky, middle and high school bands across all school districts perform at the Kentucky Music Educators Association (KMEA) Assessment Performance.

Three judges score all groups based upon the National Music Standards and use rubrics to evaluate all performances. The judges selected are from the Commonwealth of Kentucky and are highly-esteemed educators from the middle school, high school, and collegiate level. This year, the band scored distinguished from all three judges, thus averaging our score to be the highest score possible—Distinguished. This was a first in the history of FLOAN.

When returning to school, students were asked to write a reflective piece which described how they felt after receiving Distinguished. 8th Grade percussionist Cory Pierce stated, “I felt amazing. Everyday I gave my music my all.” Another percussionist wrote, “I just believed in myself and my band and I played my part to the best of my abilities.”

Director of Bands, Joe Stivers, was extremely proud of his students for earning Distinguished.

“Most of what I teach (band) has little to do with music. It has to do with students getting things right and doing their best everyday,” said Stivers. “When our kids are held to high expectations and we (teachers) work at building positive relationships with our kids, our students become unstoppable!”

Mr. Stivers also believes that a big reason for the success of the group is their team work and their commitment to each other.

Page 9: Message from the Principalschools.jefferson.kyschools.us/Middle/OlmstedNorth/... · Leadership Assessment Audit that retained school leadership and our SBDM Council. The results that

“This group of 8th graders got to the top primarily because of how much they care for one another. At times, I feel more like a coach then I do a teacher. When they challenge and push one another towards excellence, as a teacher, it is a win everyday.”

The band anticipates another great upcoming year and is projected to be at 150 students next school year. Students interested in band for 2012/2013 need to contact Mr. Stivers. WEBPAGE INFORMATION

FLOAN Student Council has been very busy this year! Our representatives have been working hard to embody the voice of all students. Their work has included social events, fundraising, incentive planning, community service, and serving as ambassadors. Specifically, the young men have hosted a dance with Olmsted South, competed in a fundraiser, created school-wide incentives, helped Southwest Greenway with a park project, and most recently, have been planning Field Day. In addition to our student council work, Principal’s Advisory Council has also been extremely involved with school activities. Our Principal’s Advisory Council meets once a month with Mr. Perkins to review celebrations, concerns, and ideas. They have also been responsible for hosting the many guests that have visited our building over the last few months, including FLOAN parents for our CHAMPS luncheon.

As the year comes to an end, it is a great time to reflect on the wonderful group that we had to work with this year. They are a devoted, spirited, and bright group of young men that we have had the privilege of collaborating with. We would like to thank all of the members of the FLOAN student council and principal’s advisory: Xzavier Stetser, Jason Nguyen, Wesley Meyer, Zach Driskell, Emanuel Rodriguez, Darrius Harris, Langston Wright, Phillip Dean, Edgar Gonzalez, Zuriegh Carter, Stephen Arnold, Antonio Thomas, Darrell Reynolds, Isaiah Ayala, Jocrisse Irakunda, Shane Vaughn, Recardo Travis, Kenneth Albyati, Dillard Commons, Kendrick Porter, Noah Zee, Demetrice Harper, Trevor Woodard, Jerelle Burton, Mohammed Abdulbaqi, Henry Barrera, Ethan Shelton, Thai Nguyen, Robert Boyd, William Diaz, Jesus Fernandez, Michael Desroches, Drue Yates, Najee Newcomb, Calvin Pham, John Newton, Sean Broadway, and Cody Crowley. NEWS FROM THE DEPARTMENTS SOCIAL STUDIES

Our department would like to share the success of our Social Studies Night

that took place on February 23, 2012. The games we played really engaged the students as well as the parents. Some parents were warned about trying to play the games after the cut-off time. Special thanks to Mr. Ackerly, Mr. Burton, Ms. Eckler, Ms. Harris, Mr. Heberlein, Mr. Price, Mrs. Teaford and Mrs. Thomas.

The games included all grade levels but the winners of our writing contest were from seventh grade, Jonathan Pleau and eighth grade Roman Hunt.

SCIENCE

6th Grade:

Our 6th grade students just finished studying about rocks and how they are formed. They will now begin their studies on Earth and Space. This is a very exciting module and our young men will enjoy participating in the activities. Students will be taking their Science Proficiency Assessment in the next few days. Those students that earn a Distinguished or Proficient will earn a Dress-Down Pass. 7th Grade:

Our 7th grade students are presently studying Forces and Motion. They

have been determining speed, distance, and time. They will be completing this module by studying forces and how they affect motion of an object. Our 7th grade students have been taking weekly assessments every Wednesday to review for the upcoming KPREP test. The students review past material learned and get an

opportunity to learn any material they may have missed. The 7th grade students will be taking the Science KPREP this year. It is extremely important that they listen in class and complete all assignments. Last year our 7th grade students had the highest gains in the whole district. I know our 7th graders can do the same thing!

8th Grade:

Our 8th grade students are working on Light Investigations. Eighth grade science is the first actual year of high school science. The material they learn this year will be tested on their high school KPREP Science test. Therefore, it is very important that they complete all activities this year. We are very proud of all of our 8th grade students and their efforts on their Science Assessments. Students will be receiving dress-down passes for each Proficient and Distinguished score they have earned in Science.

Engineering Class:

Our Engineering students were recently featured on WLKY’s School Cribs.

We are very proud of our students and what they have learned this year. Many of our students will be attending high schools that will allow them to further expand on their engineering knowledge. In the next few weeks, the engineering students will begin building boats for the J-Town Boat Regatta. This will be the 3rd year our students will represent Olmsted. The students are looking forward to building the boats and competing against other Middle Schools.

SCHOOL-WIDE READING PROGRAM

“And may the odds be ever in your favor…” This quote from the Suzanne Collins’ book, The Hunger Games, is also a

line our boys heard during their field trip to watch the movie last week. This reoccurring line in the movie is also a reoccurring theme for FLOAN’s School-wide Read-aloud (SW-RA) program. With its focus on literature that engages students and reinforces vocabulary, reading standards, and higher-order thinking skills, SW-RA also makes sure that the odds of being a strong reader are ever in their favor.

Our eighth-graders overwhelmingly enjoyed watching the movie and returned to school to discuss and write about it in connection to our 8th grade curriculum, exploring questions which required them to compare and contrast the written drama and its filmed version, analyzing the effects of techniques unique to the medium.

Our seventh graders recently completed a realistic-fiction story entitled Touching Spirit Bear, and have started reading a fiction story that has also been made into a movie, The Lightning Thief. The boys seem to thoroughly enjoy its action-packed style and mythology themes.

Sixth graders recently completed a historical fiction called Woods Runner. Set in the Revolutionary War era, the boys learned about American history, as

Page 13: Message from the Principalschools.jefferson.kyschools.us/Middle/OlmstedNorth/... · Leadership Assessment Audit that retained school leadership and our SBDM Council. The results that

well as reinforcing reading strategies. A follow-up contest facilitated by one of our 6th grade teachers, will award students in each classroom for their quality projects. Their current book, entitled Swindle, is a fun, fictional book with many high-level vocabulary words.

Our SW-RA program is just one of the ways FLOAN implements quality programs for all students. MATH

Have you ever heard a kid say, “There are so many great things in this catalog. If I had $50 to spend, what would I buy?”

Mail-order catalogs and advertising supplements can be a temptation, a convenience, and an annoyance. They can also be an opportunity for lots of math! In this activity, children pretend they have a certain amount of money to spend. They use a catalog or an advertising supplement to make a “wish list” of items they can buy for their spending limit.

This activity practices: Addition, subtraction, and estimation with dollars and cents and budgeting. This activity requires: Mail-order catalogs or advertising supplements. Pencil and paper. This activity time limit: 15 minutes to an hour (Short trips, while you’re making dinner or on rainy days).

1. Provide a catalog or advertising supplement for your student to look

through and suggest making a wish list. 2. Set a reasonable spending limit. Your student can record items and

prices, or use stick-on notes to mark pages that have items of interest. 3. Start with one item. Subtract the cost of that item from the spending

limit. How much is left to spend? For a greater challenge, start with two items and find out how much they cost together.

Are you past the spending limit yet? If so, exchange at least one item for a cheaper one. If not, choose another item.

If some of the calculations are too challenging, talk through how you would do them yourself. Next time, choose a lower spending limit.

4. Discuss everyone’s choices Listen to your children tell how they made their choices. If they don’t

mention any calculations, encourage them to tell you about this, too. If you notice errors in calculating, encourage your children to explain their thinking further.

5. Keep it FUN!

CLUBS AND ACTIVITIES Intramurals

Intramural Basketball has had a steady amount of members, averaging

more than 35 students per week. The Olmsted Basketball League will hold a double-elimination tournament April 16th through April 18th. Police officers from Louisville Metro Police Department will coaches the teams in an effort to establish a partnership with the Police Athletic League (PAL).
