National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, 761008 1 of 19 N I S T e – N E W S Message from the Director Last year I had made a promise to myself. A promise to fulfill the plethora of requests from alumni, students, parents and well wishers of NIST and especially the people of Berhampur and South Orissa. It was time, they said, NIST added a MBA course to its list of offerings. We are immensely happy that the AICTE has approved a MBA course at NIST from this academic session 2006-07 with batch strength of 60 students. This course will bridge the gap between graduating engineers and other graduates and the requirements of the Industry. As is usually our practice our Business School will compete with the best right from day one. Our core focus of specialization will be on IT and Systems. We are excited about the first batch joining us soon. It is a matter of pride that the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), Government of India, has approved our Institute to admit students through the AIEEE examination. About 4.5 lacs students from all over the country appear in this prestigious examination and the toppers are selected in all NIT’s and Deemed Universities. NIST is privileged to admit brilliant, top ranked students from the AIEEE rank holders. This will make our campus truly a multi-cultural, multi-ethnic, multi-state and above all a place where nothing else but MERIT ONLY COUNTS. This year the Institute will provide more scholarships both on the basis of economic criteria and through teaching assistantships. I urge all students to apply for the same. In addition, all BPUT Examination toppers of each and every semester with SGPA of 9.0 and above will be given Awards with due recognition. I welcome all the student residents of our first on-campus Hostel 1 for Boys. This 600 seated hostel alongwith other existing hostels make NIST a fully residential Institute which is a dream come true. July 15, 2006 Sangram Mudali Message from the Editor Last summer, I read the book India 2020 – a vision for the new millennium written by our Honorable President Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam along with Mr YS Rajan. In the chapter on “Materials and Future” they have mentioned the views of Indian scientists that “in our nation the golden triangle of R&D, i.e., lab-academia-industry has not yet emerged”. This is nothing but the truth. Most of our faculty members are habituated to teach the same syllabus year after year. They do not have proper coordination with R& D labs, as a result of which new research findings are not being incorporated in the curriculum in time. Students are not getting new themes or not learning new technologies. Similarly most of the industries follow the same traditional process year after year during manufacturing. Many new ideas are coming out from R&D labs to develop the manufacturing process which will save both time and money. But, due to the lack of coordination with R&D labs, the advanced manufacturing process is not being adopted and industries are not producing quality products. Hence most of the Indian manufacturers are losing the market which is bringing huge loss to the country. The proper coordination among academia-R&D labs-industry is very important for the overall growth of the country which is rightly mentioned by the authors. July 15 2006 Partha S Mallick

N I S T e – N E W SFrom the Placement Director

Our Placement season for the batch of 2007 started with Infosys Technologies visiting our campus onMarch 21st. Infosys Technologies selected 71 students from our campus and were very happy with the

performance of NIST students. They have rated our Institute as Grade AInstitute in their list. More than 35% of the students who have appearedgot selected in the Infosys Campus Recruitment. The second company tovisit our campus was Wipro Technologies and they selected 33 studentsfollowed by Satyam Computers (43). All the top IT companies nowrecognize NIST as a top Institute in their list and cannot afford to miss ourcampus. We have come a long way indeed since the year 1999, with thefirst company that visited our campus being Satyam Computer ServicesLtd.

The most wonderful Campus Recruitment was by Birlasoft, a “sleepless wonder” in the history ofNIST. As the Campus Recruitment went on throughout the night, with lights glowing in our greencampus, dinner being served at 12 P.M., results being announced at dawn, keeping all the faculty, placement counselors and staff awake, I was overwhelmed by BirlaSoft team’s faith in NIST and thespirit of all NISTians. Not to speak of the responsibility of a Placement Director, I could not afford totake a few naps. When the Campus Recruitment ended at 6 AM in the morning Dr. Ajit Panda was nottoo happy as he was getting ready for the day’s Campus Recruitment at Bhubaneswar.

The other companies that have recruited from NIST are HCL Technologies, Atos Origin, Syntel, L&TInfotech, MindTree, I-Gate, I-Flex, Tech Mahindra, HPGDCI, Integra Microsystems, etc., with totalplacements touching 235 and expecting to place more than 350 students before they graduate in May2007. The placement target for the next year is 100%. Work Hard and enjoy. Best Wishes.

Summer Training – 2006 at NIST Abhro Mukherjee We all wait eagerly for the summer vacation to come. This is the only time when we canbreathe easy and invest our time to explore, relax and do something more creative awayfrom the daily routine of the college. In NIST we believe in similar thoughts. We alwayslike to think something new and creative away from the mundane rat race of onlyexcelling in examinations. We like to see beyond those static equations which lie deadbeneath the hidden books and manuals. Yes! We like to convert our strong theoreticalknowledge into useful practical ones. With this thought in mind, NIST ran the summercourses – 2006.

In addition to many students of NIST, several students and faculty members from othercolleges like Kalinga Institute of Industrial Technology, Bhubaneswar, College ofEngineering, Bhubaneswar, Jagannath Institute of Technology and Management,Parlakemundi, ICAR, Rayagada, Gandhi Institute of Engineering and Technology,Gunupur, Roland Institute of Technology, Berhampur.

The EDA team was led by Dr. Ajit Kumar Panda and ably supported by Mr M. Suresh,Mr G V Kiran Kumar, Mr RK Dash, Mr Animesh Mohanty, Mr Indranil Hatai andothers. The JALP, Oracle and CCNA courses were conducted by a team led by Dr. RaviP. Reddy and consisting of Mr Shom P. Das, Mr Sidhartha BN, Mr PK Jena, Mr R KShial, Mr B S Patnaik, Ms Rasmita Ku Jena, Mr B Srikrishna, Mr Raju Pal, Mr IndranilMukhopadhyay and other members of the NTCS team. The Advanced IndustrialAutomation course was conducted by Mr BS Patnaik, Mr Satyabrata Dash, Ms SuchilipiNepak, Mr Nihar Ranjan Sahu and myself. There were many people from industries andstudents who attended the Advanced Industrial Automation Technology program.

This year we launched for the first time in entire eastern India a one-month summercourse program in Matlab and Simulink at NIST Center of Excellence, Bhubaneswar. The course was led by Dr Partha S Mallick with other faculty members Mr TrilochanPanigrahi and Mr OP Suresh.

Each and every module was made with utmost care keeping in mind the current trends inthe field of Industrial Automation. The best summer course was organized by NIST teamthis year.

The code is downloadable at Rs 200- 300 a year on most handsets from micro’swebsite, lets the owner track the exact location of his /her phone and the number of thenew SIM {subscriber identity module} card inserted.

This new e-sniffer, Lost Mobile Tracking Solution (LMTS), is awaiting a patent. It wascreated with an investment of Rs 50 lakh, of which half has already been recovered in thefour months of its launch in India.

It would be safe to say that thousands of phones are stolen and lost in India everyday, leftbehind in the backs of cabs, washroom, restaurants and shops. In 2005, 20,000 cases ofstolen mobiles (worth Rs 300 crore) were reported with the police. About eight croremobile handsets were retailed in India in the same year.

Student’s CornerSlow and Steady WINS the race Rahul Kumar, Final Year

Like Eugene Sandow in the 1900s, Milo was the strongest man of his times in ancientGreece. Sandow became the world’s strongest man by playing with a wet towel. Milo gotthere by hefting around calf leather. The story shows how setting up of small but steadilygrowing goals helps you achieve progressively bigger target in any terms. When Milowas young, his family had a small farm on which lived a small male calf. Milo’s fatherplaced the calf in the boy’s care and exhorted him to ensure that it grew into bull healthyand strong. One day, Milo’s father asked him, “How big is your bull today, Milo?” Miloran outside; picked up the calf and carried him inside to show his father. Each daythereafter, Milo’s father would ask, “How big is your bull today, Milo?” and each dayMilo would run outside, pick up his charge and carry him into the house. This went onfor a number of years. As the bull grew, so did Milo’s strength.

One day, the father went to compete in the games at great Olympic Stadium. Knowinghis son’s incredible strength would astound the crowd, Milo’s father asked his son thefamiliar question, “How big is your bull today, Milo?” Milo ran the short distance to theirfarm, picked up the now full-grown bull and carried him into the great stadium, placinghim by his father’s side. The crowd, seeing Milo carry a full-grown bull on his shoulders, erupted in applause. Word of his feat spread across the land and a legend was born.Milo’s story illustrates the principle of progressive overload. We need to progressivelyincrease the degree to which we challenge ourselves in order to make continual gains.

Experts say this becomes possible only because of our body’s great adaptability – itadjusts, as necessary, to the amount of challenge that you set yourself against. Milobecame progressively stronger because he lifted a progressively heavier weight each day.Had he simply lifted the same-sized bull everyday, he would not have got any strongerbecause there would have been no need for him to get stronger. Likewise, had he tried tolift a fully grown bull on the very first day, he’d have got a ruptured disc, hernia orsomething and his story would’ve ended. If he won the race it’s only because he wasslow and steady.

Book ReviewWho moved my cheese?

Debabrata NandaChange! People say is all about courtingtrouble because it is a commuter ofuncertainty. And this uncertainty is neverappreciated, be it the stock markets or abesieged life. But then change is the onlything constant that we do see around. It’seternal. In a world that is constantlychanging, how can we ever ignore it? Thebest way may be, is to hug it with a warmsmile. This is the theme of one of the bestselling books of our time which portraysthe affect of change on four individuals. Inthis parable, Spencer Johnson revealsprofound truths. It is an amusing andenlightening story of adapting to change inour life. CHEESE is a metaphor for desiresof our life. It could be our attitude, a lovingrelationship, a possession, business or ourjob.

The two mice, Sniff and Scurry, and thetwo “Little people” Hem and Haw, lookeveryday around in the maze for theirspecial cheese. They depended on thecheese for their living. But one fine daythey find the cheese vanished from its

usual place. Panic strikes as the two littlepeople are unaware as to how to deal withthis sudden change. How would they live?Who moved their cheese?

The story is all about the aftermath of thecheese going away from their lives. Whenfear and apprehension of an uncertainfuture strikes the two little people, theytake up the challenge to look beyond theirnormal route to search for cheese in themaze, which is a labyrinthine of darkalleys and blind corners. Trusting theirinstinct and experience they travel throughthe scary maze to find new cheese.

The book teaches us many little truths.Perhaps the most important of all is thatthere is always new cheese around but ourfear inhibits our action. It is in overcomingthe irrational fear that we can truly lookbeyond the horizon. Change is constantand we have to anticipate the change andmove along it. This possibly is theoptimized way to enjoy the change. Thequote by A.J.Cronin possibly sums up thebook in an elegant way…

“Life is no straight and easycorridor along

which we travel free andunhampered,

but a maze of passages, through which we must seek our

way, lost and confused, now and again

checked in a blind alley.

But always, if we have faith,God will open a door for us,

Not perhaps one that we ourselveswould ever have thought of, but one that will ultimately Prove good for us.”

Engineers and Entrepreneurs Sanjeet Dash, Member, Team NISTe_NewsEntrepreneurship means investing money, resources and talent in such a way so as to earnprofit. Investment can be of many types. For example, investing in share market, realestate, etc. But with the growing and changing technical world, technology basedinvestment is getting preference among the rest.

Now it’s a fact that most of these entrepreneurs have either no knowledge or have a veryfeeble idea about the field on which they are investing. But it is their interest and hardwork that helps them to get the lucrative profits. They are employing technical people orengineering graduates like us and utilizing our talents to increase their profits. So why towaste our talent in such a way? Why can't we be employers, instead of getting employed?

The mentality of most of the engineers of this region is to get a job and get some salary, get married and get so-called settled. Is this what we are supposed to do after getting fouryears of technical education? So why not utilise our talent in a more creative way, in amore proper way to start something different. We too can be entrepreneurs and start aventure of our own. Just it requires a small step, confidence and hard work and see whatdifference it can make. Many great people who earn money through entrepreneurship arenot only getting name and fame but have also created a lot of jobs for others

Entrepreneurship - this is what true engineers are made for. So the slogan for engineersshould be “be employers not employees, because you deserve it”.

KALEIDOSCOPE Rakesh Parida, Member, Team NISTe_NewsOften the time to get alarmed in the Indian households is either when youreceive the electricity bill or when you find a politician on the television! Both of these bad omens mean that the times to come may not be easy. The sighting of a politician on the tube is not rare. It usually signifies thebirth of yet another controversy. Often these controversies wreck havocin the common man’s day to day affairs. The things which grabbed the

tube the most lately are the increase in petroleum prices and the quota debate. 50 bucks aliter for petrol!! Even the good lord would prefer to walk out his distances. The latter ofthe controversies was even more maddening. The festivities of yet another year of UPAled administration had hardly ended when Mr. Arjun Singh dropped this bombshell. Withelaborate quota system being planned for the central education institutions and withquotas being planned for employment in the private sector enterprises, Arjun has surelystirred up the pot! However, with everyone jumping on the bandwagon of Arjun bashing,Kaleidoscope decided to give the man a second chance. It decided to find the real manbehind all the controversies. Thus began the analysis of the man which culminated onKaleidoscope laying its most lucky hands on Arjun’s personal diary. So, let us enlightenourselves about the man behind all the hue and cry.7:30 A.M.Not often do people find a letter from the Prime Minister first thing they wake up in themorning. That usually signifies one of the two possibilities. It may mean that I haveperformed exemplarily well in the Human Resources Ministry and have been promoted toa ministry which is more meaningful in political terms. Or it may mean that I havemanaged to conjure up some crisis which would require him to send me a dispatch first

thing in the morning. Whichever it may be, it means publicity! According to Arjun’sdictionary, publicity equals more votes. So the letter was never going to hurt me.However, the letter can wait. What the heck! If I can wait 2 more years for the PM’schair, the Manmohan can surely wait 2 days for my attention. I decide to check out thenews. I switch on the television. I scan the news channels, pinch myself and yes, it reallyis me. Now, face on the television first thing in the morning, by Arjun’s dictionary itwould mean 10% extra votes in the forthcoming assembly elections. Gosh, I even look 10years younger on the tube. Always love to see people chanting one’s name even thoughits in disdain. What’s that they are calling themselves? Youth for equality? What equalityare we talking about? I get once in a lifetime opportunity of becoming the PM ( Congresswinning the elections can most appropriately likened to India winning a test series onforeign soil, so I hope you get the point!). I get passed over and Sonia gets the nod. Soniapasses it over and who’s getting it? Its Manmohan! I don’t see no equality here. Anywayswhat are these kids protesting against anyways? OBC quotas being implemented incentral educational institutions, is it? Is there anything to protest against really? The SCsand OBCs constitute about 70% of the population. (Arjun’s Dictionary: Population =Vote Bank) What do these silly students know about vote bank politics? Are they awareof how difficult it really is to retain one’s constituency leave alone run for PrimeMinistership? The only thing they are worried about is their future. What about myfuture? I got about 10 meager years to live. 10 small years to become the prime minister.Did anyone tell these people that India was the land of equal opportunities?

I was only too glad that the news piece covering me was sandwiched between one’scovering Amitabh Bacchan landing up in the Income Tax net and Rajnikant beingworshipped somewhere down south. Now that gives me coverage in all territories I guess.(Add 10% more to the vote bank!) The last thing my morning required was my secretarycalling me up and enlightening me of a crisis at the HRD ministry. Apparently myproposal of implementing the quota system on Air India and Indian Airlines ran intorough weather. It was planned that of all the passengers on the aircraft, 20% should beSCs, 20% OBC’s, 20% Women, 20% MPs & MLAs, 10% Handicapped, 5% Defense &finally 5% for the NRIs. (One of these days these thankless students are going to begrateful for all the mathematics I have put into the system!) So, after all this elaborateplanning, I ask my secretary about his dilemma? He tells me that after all the quotaallocations there isn’t any room for the pilot himself! The answer is simple if you ask me.I ask my ever knowledgeable bureaucrat, if he knew how much contribution does a singlepilot give to the entire vote bank? (I really feel so elated when I ask rhetorical questionsto these self-absorbed bureaucrats!) Eventually this latest endeavor would add about 6%to the vote bank. If someone sums it up, it’s a 26% gain today. At the same rate I wouldbe able to topple that oxford graduate Manmohan in no time. Sometimes I am evensurprise myself over the wit I display. If only I belonged to a Scheduled Caste, gettinginto an IIM would have been so easy!

Our Journey to Saurkundi Pass Mihir Hota(Faculty, NIST)Faculty members and students of NIST started for Mountaineering 2006 on May 28, 2006. Thisyear their journey was towards Saurkundi, a small lake surrounded by snow peaked hill tops

situated at 13000ft on one of the mountainranges of the Himalayas. To go to that spotone has to go to Baveli which is 7kms awayfrom Kulu situated in Himachal Pradesh. Theplace is surrounded by tall pine & apple treesin between which flows the Beas river and ifyou look up then one can observe the beautifulsnow clad peaks of the Himalayas. The placeis one can say the nature’s gift to the humanrace.

Our trekking expedition was organized incollaboration with YHAI (Youth HostelAssociation of India). The NIST teamcomprised of the following members: Dr.

Arun K Padhi(Faculty), Mr. Mihir Hota(Faculty), Mr. Vinay Kumar Das(SAC Coordinator), Mr.Suresh Patnaik(AO), Miss Basanti Patra(YOGA Instructor), Richa Sharma(Student), RakeshPatnaik(Student), Mahesh (Student), Linkon(Student), Ansuman(Student), AchinSharma(Student).

All the arrangements were done by our SAC coordinator Mr. Vinay Kumar Das. We reachedBaveli on May 31st and were allotted immediately different tents. There were separate tents forboys and girls. On 1st June we were trained by the experts how to acclimatize to the hillycondition. For that we all had to wake up early in the morning. At 6A.M. we all had to do joggingfor 1km and then had to do exercise for about one hour. Then after the breakfast we went for amini trekking lead by the co-director of YHAI, Mr. Chauhan, who himself is a good climber. Thewhole idea of mini trekking was to acclimatize the participants about the hilly tracts and the roadsahead during the real trekking. All the participants of NIST came out successfully in that test. Then after the lunch all our participants successfully completed the rock climbing and rapling. Bythat time everybody was completely tired and needed rest. It was already 5PM in the evening.

With the encouragement from the Director of YHAI we started our journey towards Saurkundi on2nd June, 2006. We were taken by a bus for about 15 kms from our Baveli Camp from where wehad to start our trekking. Our first guide was Mr. Chet Ram whose common word was “Thikk”.Our group consisted of engineers from IIT Madras and Kharagpur. Few of them were studentsfrom Gujarat Engineering College. Everyday we had to trek for about 10 kms in 6 to 7 hours. Wehad to move through the tall pine trees and the apple trees. The date was 06.06.06. On this day wehad all conquered Saurkundi. The hill was full of snow and ice. All our group members playedwith snow and we did sliding which was a unique experience. We stayed for about one hour at

the top.

Trekking gives us the training of perseverance, hard work, team work, cooperation, fellowfeeling and not to be defeated at any oddsamong us which is required at every stage oflife. Trekking gives us a chance to know theflora and fauna of the hills, its importance tothe society. The hills are saying to enjoy itsbeauty but simultaneously it asks us topreserve its surroundings. It also tests one’sfitness level.

Lastly I give my hearty thanks to NIST and Mr. Vinay Kumar Das.

Suryakant: I am Suryakant Routray from the department of Electronics &Instrumentation of 2005 passout batch. I am presently working at InfosysTechnologies Ltd. under SETLABS department.

Preeta: What was your experience like studying at NIST?Suryakant: It was a great time during the B.E at NIST. It was a pleasant experience to study inan atmosphere where the entire organisation worked like a family. Definitely where I am standing today, the college has a big role in shaping it.

Preeta: Could you please share one of the most memorable incidents at NIST?Suryakant: A pre-placement session that I took when I was in 4th year for my juniors still is inmy memory. Panda sir told me to take a class and guide the students and share my experience tothem. I was surprised to get such a huge response from the students and then I took a full fledgedtwo days class for them imparting most of my knowledge I had.

Preeta: Which of the faculties left a lasting impression on your mind and why?Suryakant: Well to be honest most of the faculties that I came across during my stay at NIST hasput some inputs into me. But I like very much the systematic way Suresh Sir takes up the courseand puts them into the inner core of the students brain.

Preeta: In your opinion does NIST groom its students properly for facing futurechallenges? Suryakant: Yes, what I feel the extra curriculum like learning different software languages, learning Japanese really puts Nistians somewhat a step ahead of others in this competitive market.

Preeta: Could you please throw some light on your company and its activities? Suryakant: I work in the department of SETLABS, Infosys. Infosys, as need not to bementioned, is the fastest growing software company in the market. The company is penetratinginto more foreign countries expanding its business into various new sectors.

Preeta: How has your experience been till now working there?Suryakant: I feel privileged to be a part of such an organisation which believes in values andtrue intellectuals. It is a great experience working with people as a team.

Preeta: Please share some advice for your juniors.Suryakant: Well, what I can say to them is to know the importance of time. As I was too one ofthem so I know each of their mind setup. In this world the platform we are standing is movingbackward, you keep on running, you will be standing on the same place. You stop once you willgo far behind. Such is the competition today. As a final word BEST OF LUCK to all of them fortheir future career.
